Have Fun Getting to Know Your Police By Stewart Lytle, Reporter –––––––––––––––––
NEWBURYPORT — If you love watching Law and Order and CSI or even The Mentalist television shows, you may want to apply to participate in the upcoming Citizens Police Academy this spring. If you have never ridden in a police cruiser, learned how fingerprints are taken and matched or toured a jail, you may want to join a couple of dozen fellow citizens for this free 10week course. If you don't know a single police oďŹƒcer, you might want to take advantage of this opportunity to meet and get to know many of Newburyport's Finest. And have some fun doing it. City Marshal Thomas Howard, who has been conducting citizen police academies since 1996, said, “I OďŹƒcer John Gavin beside a police cruiser .

It will be over by Memorial Day. “You get to try a lot of different things. You get to meet a lot of police oďŹƒcers. You get to learn a lot about your community police force,â€? Howard said. Participants also learn that real police work is different from what they see on TV. Crimes are rarely solved in 38 minutes. Susanne Meyer, who participated in the police academy last year, agrees. can be found through the country. Howard said he conducts the Newburyport academy as another way to gain input from the residents. “The academy has offered us insights into the community. We learn as much from those who participate as they learn from us,” he said. Meyer wrote that the courses were “very informative, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.” Applicants must be 21 years or older, or as young as 18 if accompanied by an adult. Applicants have to be upstanding citizens, Howard said. In the past, a few people have been turned away after background checks disqualified them. To apply for the citizens academy, visit the police department's web site or stop by the police headquarters at 4 Green Street. For more information, call the police department at 978462-4411.
Salisbury Elementary's Program Reduces Summer Learning Loss programs coordinator for the Triton Regional School District. “I felt great. I wished I had had that opportunity.” The class discussion was part of a six-week summer program created in part to determine if schools can reduce summer learning loss. And it appears that going to school for part of the summer does exactly that. For the last two summers, test results show that the 175 children who attended the six-week summer program had 18 percent less learning loss than those who took the entire summer off, Collins said. The tests showed that 90 percent of kindergarten students had no summer learning loss, while 91 percent of the first graders, 95 percent of the second graders and 85 percent of the third graders also had no summer learning lost, she said. All students at Salisbury Elementary were tested at the end of the school year and again at the beginning of the new year. The students in the summer program were also tested at the end of the six-week program. If those test scores hold up, Collins said, “Districts will have to begin rethinking their school year.” The program is not remedial. It stimulates in the children “a lifetime love of learning,” Collins said. And she believes the students have a lot of fun learning. When one girl broke her leg and had to be in a cast, she insisted on coming to the program, her father carrying her into the class. “She wouldn't stay home,” the father told the teacher. Triton is waiting to hear from the federal 21st Century Schools Program if Salisbury will again this year receive a grant for the six-week program for students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. Only four school districts in the state were awarded the highly competitive grants. The grant for Triton to run the program was $125,000 to $130,000 a year, Collins said. In addition,
the school district also supported the program with supplies and administrative help. And the administration allocated funding to pay overtime for the maintenance crews to get the school building cleaned and repaired after the program is over. The Salisbury program, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., is not like regular school. There are no desks. The students, who include special needs students, work collaboratively together at large tables. They walk around more. And there is a lot of field work. The students work on educational projects outside the classroom. The program's 30 teachers and college interns have expanded the Science Technology Engineering and Math curriculum to include Art, which Collins said allows the program now to be called STEAM. The
students each summer put on a Junior Broadway play, she said. This summer she is planning a project for the students with the Gulf of Maine Institute to learn about a breed of turtle whose habitat is being endangered. The older students, in the fourth and fifth grades, may build houses along the Ghost Trail for the turtles to live in so all the students can monitor the turtles' progress. “It helps kids at a young age realize they can make a difference in the life of a turtle,” Collins said. The program has attracted an “excellent staff” of current and retired teachers. They are supplemented by college students, who provide a positive role model for the students. “We are as successful as we are because of the staff,” Collins said. “We pay them well. But we expect a lot from them.”

a great experience that I want to encourage others to take advantage of this opportunity the next time it is offered.” The objective, she wrote, is not to train citizens to be cops. But rather, “The Citizen Police Academy allows a firsthand look and provides some insight into the officers behind the badges. I was very impressed by their professionalism, their sensitivity, their use of discretion and their sincere dedication to the job of protecting the residents of Newburyport.” On Thursday nights, academy students will learn about how police deal with topics like domestic violence, identity theft and driving while intoxicated. They will watch as firemen, emergency medical personnel and police respond to a mock motor vehicle crash, including the use of the Jaws of Life
equipment. Two of the most popular nights are a tour of the Middleton jail and a four-hour ride-along with police officers answering calls. The stress-free courses also include an overview of self defense, a chance to see how radar is used in traffic control, how the K-9 units work and a tour of the police station. The concept of the Citizen Police Academy began in the United Kingdom in 1977 in the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in city of Exeter. When the police night school allowed citizens to learn about police operations, the program was soon swamped with applicants wanting to know about their police force. In the U.S., the Orlando, FL, Police Department adopted the concept of the police night school and created the first Citizen Police Academy in 1985. Today citizen police academies

Your Pet’s Tooth Health: Problems & Solutions Part 1 of 2 Muddy Creek Animal Care Center By: Dr. Blake Liebert February is “National Pet Dental Health Month, and I would like to make you aware of some of the problems associated with poor oral health, and let you know some of the things that can be done to improve, and prevent, poor animal oral health. Dental disease is the most common disease found in dogs and cats. The American Veterinary Dental Society estimates that 85% of cats and dogs will develop clinical dental disease by 4 years of age. The disease process develops when bacterial plaque and tartar compromise the oral tissues leading to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and ultimately tooth loss.
If these bacteria gain access to bloodstream they may have more far reaching effects on organ systems including the lungs, liver, kidneys, and heart. All pets are susceptible to dental disease. Some simple signs to determine if your pet is developing dental disease include halitosis, visible tartar, swollen, receding, or bleeding gums, changing eating habits, or visibly loose or fractured teeth. If any of these signs are observed your pet may have dental disease that requires medical attention. Dr. Blake Liebert is Chief of Staff at Muddy Creek Animal Care Center in Rowley, MA. Muddy Creek is a full service animal care facility providing veterinary services, boarding,
grooming, daycare, and training. If you have any questions about the practice please feel free to call for further information. If you have any questions relating to this article, or future topics you would like discussed, please email them to clientcare@muddycreekanimalcare. com. All previously written columns can also be viewed at www.muddycreekanimalcare.com. * Part 2 can be read in the February 13th Edition of The Town Common.

Your Personal Life Saver
BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD
You’ve heard it before – three in four adults over 35 have some form of gum disease. And a preponderance of new clinical research reveals that gum disease poses a far greater threat to health than just losing a tooth. Periodontal disease may actually increase your risk for a variety of health concerns including heart attacks, low birth weight babies, diabetes and stroke. Dr. Isadore Rosenfield, Health Editor of PARADE magazine – “People with chronically infected gums have twice as much heart disease as the rest of us. We have an imperative to treat gum disease – to save not only teeth but also patients.” Dr. Steven Offenbacher, director of the Center for Oral and Systemic Disease at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – “In many ways, periodontal disease is like high blood pressure – it’s painless and only becomes evident when it’s quite severe.” All gum disease begins with the accumulation of plaque, a sticky deposit of bacteria, mucus and food particles that build up along the gum line and between the teeth. Plaque can cause gingivitis – inflammation of the gums. Plaque must be removed daily to
prevent buildup. Brushing and flossing, coupled with a minimum of twice-yearly professional cleanings, will combat gingivitis in most people. There is a strong genetic component to periodontal disease. One of the questions I always ask my patients is whether or not they know their familial history with regards to gum disease. If a patient says, “Well, my parents both had dentures”, then there is a strong possibility that patient has the gene for gum disease. There are only two main reasons that people lose teeth – gum disease and decay – and the prior is far more likely. If gingivitis is not treated, or is treated too late, the result can become periodontitis. This occurs when plaque invades beneath the gum, turning into a hard substance called tartar or calculus. Calculus can only be removed during a professional cleaning. At the stage, skilled care is essential to stave off tooth loss. In more advanced cases, a procedure called scaling and root planing is performed to remove hidden plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Do you have gum disease? Warning signs may not be evident to you but may include red, swollen, tender, bleeding or receding gums; loose teeth; persistent bad breath; changes in tooth position; and the development of pockets between gums and teeth. It used to be that your dentist could only diagnose periodontal disease from x-rays that showed loss of bone
around teeth. Today, gum disease and periodontal disease can be successfully treated BEFORE teeth get loose from bone loss. Your hygienist and dentist can measure the pockets and bleeding points around your teeth and institute non-surgical treatment before you suffer the irreversible bone destruction of periodontal disease. So remember – the hygienists of the 21st century don’t just clean teeth – THEY SAVE LIVES! Dr. St. Clair maintains a private dental practice in Rowley and Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered family dentistry. If there are certain topics you would like to see written about or questions you have please email them to him at jpstclair@dentalhealthforlife.com. February 6 - 12, 2013 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might feel bolder as each new success falls into place. But caution is still advised through the end of the week. Until then, a step-by-step approach is best. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That cooperation you request could come at too high a price. Since few can beat the Bovine at being clever and resourceful, why not see what you can do on your own? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor a quieter time spent getting closer to the people who are especially important to you. There's always much more to learn and appreciate about each other. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The concerned Crab will act to resolve workplace misunderstandings before they get out of hand and cause more-serious problems. Co-workers rally to support your efforts. LEO (July 23 to August 22) What the Big Cat might see as a disturbing act of disloyalty might just be a failure of communication on both sides. Take time for mediation rather than confrontation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be more patient with those who seem unwilling to accept your version of what's right. The fact is, there's a lot more to learn on all sides of this issue. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It should be easier to assess the facts you'll need to make an important decision. But don't commit if you still have doubts. There could be more you need to know. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your excitement level remains high as you continue working on that new project. Expect some setbacks. But on the whole, all will move pretty much on schedule. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It might be wise to be more prudent with expenses right now. But your financial situation should soon clear up, and you could be back shopping, happily as ever. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might prefer sticking with your current schedule. But some newly emerging information could persuade you to consider a change. Keep an open mind. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might want to reject a suggested change. But it could be wise to go with the flow, at least for a while. You can always return to your first plan if you like. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You're bolstered by both the practical and poetic sides of your nature as you maneuver through some unsettled emotional situations. Things ease up by week's end. BORN THIS WEEK: People reach out to your generosity and wisdom, and consider you a trusted and treasured friend.
