Does Rowley Need Another Flea Market? By Stewart Lytle, Reporter –––––––––––––––––

ROWLEY – One of the most popular sites on the North Shore is the flea market at Todd Farm on Rte 1A. Hordes of bargain hunters and history buffs spend Sundays in good weather picking over objects of interest, haggling over price and eventually exchanging ready cash. Which raises the question: is there room for another flea market, or possibly more antique shops in a town that already has several? On Wednesday night, the town’s Planning Board will meet on whether to allow more flea markets and antique stores in a 65-acre area along both sides of the scenic byway around Todd Farm. The proposal is to create a new overlay district on the 65 acres, owned by about a dozen different The popular Todd Farm Flea Market

Todd Farm can keep opening its gates to vendors and customers no matter what the planning board does. The proposal is from a neighbor – Nate Comley, a member of a prominent Rowley family which own property across Rte. 1A. Comley told the planning board he wants to find a way for his land to earn more money and needs less town restrictions to accomplish that. The proposal has met with stiff opposition from Continued on page 3

teacher unions, happy. Arguing that charter schools siphon off funding and students from traditional public schools, the opponents have vowed to fight what appears to be a growing desire to expand the number of charter schools in the state. Andy Willemsen, director of the River Valley Charter School in Newburyport, does not claim to know why all charter schools are having more success educating students than traditional schools. He has only been involved with River Valley, which he helped found, and Hill View Montessori Public Charter School in Haverhill, where he taught math for several years. But he thinks that most high quality schools, whether they are charter schools or not, focus on teaching students skills, helping them to learn to think, rather than just teaching content so they can pass a test. “If schools are just performing to the test, we have missed the point, Willemsen said. He believes a child learns when allowed to get a math problem wrong. It is like in business, where you are encouraged to fail forward, he said. But in a test-centric environment like most schools, a wrong answer counts against them, he said. Willemsen and Jeanne Schultz, the executive director of Hill View,

believe that their schools are focused on educating the whole child. Being the only two charter public schools in the state that teach in the style advocated by Dr. Maria Montessori, River Valley and Hill View provide a more holistic approach to a child’s learning. “We are committed to high standards, aspirations, Schultz, who was director of River Valley before moving to Hill View two years ago. “There is a huge social, emotional component to our teaching. Willemsen described it succinctly: “We tell our students to be curious, creative and move, reflecting Montessori’s belief that physical movement is critical to learning. Their schools are also smaller. River Valley is capped at 288 students, who are chosen by a lottery. Hill View has just over 300 students, also chosen by lottery. With only 64 students in the 7th and 8th grades at River Valley, Willemsen said, “There are a lot of advantages. They need each other. Also if a student spends nine years at River Valley from kindergarten through eighth grade, at least 20 adults will know that child. “There are fewer cracks for a child to fall through, he said. Every student is getting very individualized instruction. “We are tutoring each child, he said. Schultz and Willemsen said it is also important that many charter schools are

It’s just after midnight in a New England tall pine forest on a cool fall evening. A deer mouse scurries with confidence from bush to bush in the dim light of the crescent moon. He is totally oblivious to the tiny cat faced Saw Whet Owl that is tracking his every move from the top of a thirty foot pine tree. The mouse nervously stops between bushes to nibble on a seed that he scrounged from the forest floor. This will be his last meal. The fist sized owl silently glides down with his specially developed wing feathers and thrusts his sharp talons forward. It is over without a sound.

Life Long Memories!

CHILD ENRICHMENT ENRICHMENT TOPIC OF THE WEEK:

Developing Musical Aptitude in Young Children

Studies show that when young children are exposed to music early in life, it deepens their capacities for such activities later in life, regardless of whether people go on to further training. Musical aptitude parallels to language development in that way. If the pathways (neurofiber) are carved early on, it makes it much easier to become musically literate or to pick up an instrument later in Written By: life. Babies who are sung to and bounced or Marika Whitaker patted rhythmically are more likely to feel that beat embodied and have music “inside” them when they go to externalize that sound on an instrument years later. That’s why music “education” is MOST important in the first 6 years of a person’s life. Really, the best thing you can do to develop your children’s musical appreciation is to sing them to sleep! Marika Whitaker teaches art and music at North Shore Montessori School in Rowley, MA.

Whether you are missing teeth or are unhappy with the ones you have, it may be time to explore your options.

It is common for a patient to ask what kind of toothpaste they should use. The concept of toothpaste and mouth washes is pretty old - almost as old as the Egyptian toothbrush. In fact, the earliest known toothpaste was created by the Egyptians. It was said to contain rock salt, mint, dried iris flowers and 20 grains of pepper, all crushed and mixed together to form a powder. It wasn’t until the 18th Century that the next recorded version of toothpaste showed up. That recipe was interesting as well. The 19th Century saw a lot of toothpaste innovations, although many of them would be repulsive compared to what we are used to today. Charcoal, for example, was popular. Most of the toothpastes of this time were powders that became a paste when introduced to saliva. A lot of these different toothpastes were designed to both clean teeth and give the user better breath. It wasn’t until the 1900s that toothpastes evolved into what we know now. Colgate, and many other toothpaste companies, worked to design toothpastes that

tasted better while cleaning the teeth and not causing gums to bleed. Many ingredients now show up in toothpastes, with fluoride being one of the most common. There are a wide variety of “herbal” toothpastes as well, which don’t contain any fluoride. The variety of toothpastes available is designed to fit the needs and wants of every type of person out there. This high level of choice is the modern age’s primary contribution to toothpastes. So, where does toothpaste go from here? Research continues to develop different ingredients that will benefit different problems. One of those ingredients I recently came across is green tea. The oral health benefits of green tea are getting increasing attention in scientific literature, and now the authors of a new study suggest that it should be added to dentifrices as an active ingredient for managing periodontal disease. The study authors, who are associated with various medical institutes in India, reported that it is a beneficial adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal (gum) therapy. “Green tea is known to possess anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities,” the authors wrote. “Antioxidants have a protective effect on periodontal tissues by reducing the oxidative stress in periodontal tissues.” The study compared the

effectiveness of great tea vs. triclosan. If you remember, triclosan, an antimicrobial in some toothpastes I wrote about a few months ago, is under scrutiny for its overall safety. It is also found in some hand soaps, skin cleansers and detergents and has been shown to help with gum inflammation. “On comparison with fluoride-triclosan dentifrice, green tea showed greater reduction of gingival inflammation and improved periodontal parameters,” the authors wrote. “This can be attributed to the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of green tea.” These results showed enhanced outcomes with the use of green tea dentifrice as an adjunct to routine professional periodontal care during the active and healing phases. Long-term clinical trials should be conducted to validate the results of this pilot study, the group added. The great thing about green tea is that it is a natural product. Something to watch. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be upset about having to deal with problems that are no fault of your own. But you can turn the annoyance into an asset by showing how quickly and how well you can resolve them. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. You might later be surprised to learn who will be expressing his or her gratitude. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you can tackle your assignment the way you prefer, it might be a good idea to at least ask for suggestions. Who knows? One or two might even turn out to be helpful. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make all the changes in your plans or proposals that you feel are necessary before -- repeat, before -- you submit them to your colleagues. You’ll come off looking more decisive that way. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might feel a mite intimidated in a new environment, be it a job, a classroom or meeting the future in-laws. But enter with a big smile, and everyone will see you as a real take-charge Cat. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This could be a romantic time for you if you can set aside your cynicism and let yourself believe that someone really cares. If you’re already in a relationship, expect your partner to be extra-loving.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to shed any doubts about your abilities. You’ve proved yourself in the past, so why not accept that you’ll do just as well, or better, in dealing with the new challenge ahead? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your suspicions might be on the mark, but unless you can prove what you assume, you need to exercise that Scorpion discretion and let events unfold without your assistance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful not to go over the top this week. Avoid overeating (especially of the wrong foods), or drinking too much, or working too hard. You can do it all, but in moderation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family matter is given to you to resolve because you have the gift for bringing quarrelsome kinfolk together. But while you’re playing Dr. Phil, don’t neglect your career obligations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone of importance shares your goals but disagrees with your plan to achieve them. Never mind. Defending your methods with logic and facts earns you admiration and respect. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Consider getting away, perhaps for the weekend, despite all the demands made on your time and energies. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle it all with your usual finesse. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of honesty that makes people believe and trust in you.
