It's A Spring Thing
By Stewart Lytle, Reporter ––––––––––––––––– ROWLEY – Because the kids shouldn't have all the fun, the fourth grade parents at Pine Grove School are hosting a night out for the adults, called It’s a Spring Thing. They have booked Nicholson Hall in Newburyport on May 12 for a party that will include wine and beer, light food, dancing and, most importantly, the chance to bid on a wide array of items from sports memorabilia to fishing trips to jewelry. "It’s not just for the fourth grade parents or even just the Pine Grove Community. This is a great night out for everyone and it’s for a great cause," said Michele Ouellette, one of the co-chairs of the event along with Kerry Perley and Susan Mailhoit. Tickets are only $20 and all the proceeds go to underwrite a five-day trip for fifth graders next October to the Ferry Beach Ecology School (FBES) in Saco, ME. The trip is “wonderful,” said fifth grade teacher Elizabeth Eddy. At the Ecology School, located on the coast just south of Portland, the students stay in dorms for the week and learn about many different ecosystems, the plants and animals that live there, and the adaptations they have in order for them to thrive in that environment,” Eddy said. “Some of the ecosystems they visit are the beach, dunes, forest, tide pools and salt marsh. It is essential to our curriculum because it aligns to the state standards, and the students gain access to hands-on learning that is not possible in the classroom,” she wrote in an email. But the trip is not cheap. The total cost for the 85 students to attend for the five days is $35,000 or about $450 per student. That is about $150 less than FBES lists on its web site. So that every student can attend, the parents start raising money this year. In the past, the parents and students joined together to cook up a spaghetti dinner

that also included some of the fun planned for this event. But last year, the parents decided to split off the silent auction and dancing, letting the students serve their spaghetti dinner in March. “It worked out wonderfully. They did really well last year,” said Kerry Perley, co-chair and donor of some auction items. “We are trying to build on their momentum.” Eddy wrote, “The students fundraise throughout their 4th grade year, and usually drop the price from $450 to $200 per student. However, because we feel this experience is so important for the students, we do not allow any of Continued on page 3

By Stewart Lytle, Reporter ––––––––––––––––– HAVERHILL – Angie Stokes' friends, particularly those who gather with her many mornings for coffee and sticky buns at Leah Mae's Tea House, are not overly excited that their friend will soon be having her head shaved. “Some of my friends are sad that my hair is going soon,” Stokes said. Sharon Tripp, who owns Leah Mae's, agreed, “She's got great hair.” Stokes is getting her head shaved in an effort to raise money for the One Mission Kid's Cancer BuzzOff. “I am buzzing off my hair in an event to raise money for children and their families fighting pediatric cancer,” she wrote in an email. One Mission is a childhood cancer foundation dedicated to enhancing the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families. It says that it “provides help, hope, care and support to kids and their families touched by cancer.” On June 9 she and some of the students at the Hill View Montessori Charter Public School will sit for the ultimate hair cut. A few days earlier, on June 3, other Hill View students will attend an event at Gillette Stadium where hundreds of people, young and old, will sit for a buzz cut in exchange for donations to fight cancer in children. That event is sold out. All proceeds from Stokes' efforts and many others will benefit Children's Hospital Boston and the vital Continued on page 3

How to Submit Letters to the Editor
Marc Maravalli, B.S., R.Ph. Publisher/Editor, The Town Common
Letters to the Editor provide a useful way of communicating concerns, issues, or suggestions to all members of the community. The Town Common encourages all citizens to submit letters concerning issues of interest and concern to the local community. Letters selected for publication may be edited for length and clarity. Some letters may serve as a catalyst for other articles or coverage, and community leaders and agencies will be offered an opportunity to respond to letters concerning their areas of responsibility. All letters must be signed and include a daytime telephone number. Letters may be submitted to: The Editor c/o The Town Common 77 Wethersfield St. Rowley, MA 01 6 or via e-mail to: editor@thetowncommon.com.
Letters to the Editor Be Informed in Ipswich
To the Editor, Ipswich Town Meeting, coming MAY 8,2012 Are you an informed citizen? It is your TAX money being voted on. Are you informed, that important information is now on line. Go to Town website and down load and read (study) just like you do with your home or business budget, if you’re an accountant or number cruncher get INFORMED and ask questions. What’s on line? The warrant. The synopsis. Most important the 2013 Budget for Town. The 2013 School budget. Monthly Town and School expenditures. Hopefully a pie chart to easily read and see how much of your... • tax dollars and % are going for school expenses • tax dollars and % are going for town expenses; • tax dollars and % are going for debt service When you are INFORMED you may be able to understand that when you vote. YOU will be increasing your TAXES. The synopsis will show this ,bring a calculator and figure how much it will effect you. Before you go, educate your self about OPEC. This is health insurance that is unfunded because among other things ,raises were given instead of putting money aside for insurance Like if you took a raise instead of paying your insurance bill. Now it appears you, the TAX payer will be paying again for something that should have been paid out of previous TAXES.... Yet the Town continues to use your property like an atm .Property values are down but TAXES up....WHY? Town Meeting is your time to speak up and be counted. In this age of instant communication and technology, Financial information should be readily availably Be prepared and informed for Town Meeting “BEFORE” you go, not while your in your seat and not understand what’s happening don’t be intimidated be GET INFORMED Above all, insist in OPENNESS AND TRANSPARENCY. If for some reason you can’t get the links financial info e-mail me at FIRSTOPTSERV@COMCAST.NET Respectfully, Phil Goguen, Kingfisher Rd, Ipswich, Ma.

Cummings for the Kids - Triton School Committee A Parent’s Most Important Vote on Election Day
Good Day, Please allow me to introduce myself to those parents and residents of Newbury, Salisbury, & Rowley who do not already know me I am; Dick Cummings a 19 year resident of Rowley my wife Patti and I have six children the youngest of whom are Schuyler (11 years) and Cameron (8 years) both are enrolled at Pine Grove School Rowley, Triton School system. I was graduated from Columbia University 1975 B.A. and Founded, Arbor Consulting, a Business Process Management Consulting Company (BPM) in 1998. My experience in local public service is: Rowley Selectman (6 yrs second term expiring); Triton Schools Budget Advisory Board member; Rowley Historic Commission member (7 yrs ongoing); Rowley Community Preservation Commission member (6 yrs ongoing); Bradstreet Land Use Committee member (3 yrs completed); Essex National Heritage Commission (Scenic Byway Committee Federal Grant 2y rs completed); and the Eastern Essex Veterans Association Representative (4 yrs ongoing). My prime motivation in seeking the 2012 Election as the Rowley representative to the Triton Regional School District Committee is that I have two children (Sky, eleven years & Cam, eight years) in the Triton school system and will have at least one child (Cam) in the Triton schools for the next decade. Therefore I want to be part of a solution that will make parents feel at ease and provide to them a sense of “peace of mind” knowing that their children enrolled in a Triton School, be it an elementary, middle or high school, will have “a vested parent” as a Triton School Committee member ready to contribute and ensure that our children receive the best educational experience we can provide, resulting in a brighter future for them in the years to come. Additionally, my service on the Triton school budget advisory board and my being part of the annual town of Rowley budget process that includes the Triton Regional District School budget makes me uniquely qualified regarding the fiscal understanding and responsibility of a Triton School Committee member. My initial goal(s) serving on the school committee is to: Honor & uphold my sworn oath to the Triton School Committee Charter and all that it stands for; Communicate and be visible, accessible, accountable, and committed to all the children, parents, and residents within the Triton Schools and the district; Become an informational resource & conduit to the parent’s, the residents, and the municipal governing bodies of Newbury, Rowley, & Salisbury relating to any and all school initiatives My Committee member goals include but are not limited to professional achievement and success through rigorous self-education and committee meeting experience to work in synergy with other school committee members using any and all resources available to me (public or private) regarding the business processes and educational initiatives of the Triton Regional School District Residents in Rowley already have come to know that my commitment to the aforementioned goals is already inherent in my DNA and many of these goals have become self-appointed responsibilities that I take seriously as a Rowley elected selectman. The benefit of achieving these goals has been to help demystify, educate, and remove any apprehension(s) Rowley residents and businesses may have or had had when questioning any decision making processes or initiatives involved in Rowley’s municipal government. The most important single factor in individual success is COMMITMENT. Commitment ignites action. To commit is to pledge yourself to a certain purpose or line of conduct. It also means practicing your beliefs consistently. There are, therefore, two fundamental conditions for commitment. The first is having a sound set of beliefs. There is an old saying that goes, "Stand for something or you'll fall for anything." The second is faithful adherence to those beliefs with your behavior. Voters should realize that our secret ballot system is a voting method in which a voter's choices in an election or a referendum are anonymous. The key aim is to ensure the voter records a sincere choice by forestalling attempts to influence the voter by intimidation or bribery. The system is one means of achieving the goal of political privacy. Cummings for the Kids campaign is a major stakeholder with two children enrolled in the Triton Schools and is committed by word and behavior to work diligently and responsibly to ensure that the children of the Triton Schools have the best educational experience that the district is capable of providing. Sincerely, Dick Cummings, Rowley MA

As of last week, she had raised $230, or 92 percent of her goal. painful treatments and lengthy hospital stays while their families cope with unimaginable stress, anxiety, and financial strain,” she wrote. Cancer has struck several people close to her. Both her parents and an aunt died from cancer. One of her best childhood friends contracted cancer as a child, but has survived because of good medical treatment like that provided by Children's Hospital. When she heard through her daughter, Maggie, who attends Hill View, about the fundraising effort, she
said, “I'll shave my head. Why not? Hair grows back.” She is also getting her hair buzzed off because, as Tripp said, “She is the most giving person I know.” For more information or to make a donations to the cause, visit www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/ angelastokes/kidscancerbuzz-off. “Your generous support will assist One Mission in funding vital programs and services that bring help, hope, care and support to pediatric cancer patients and their families,” she wrote.

The Town Common VERY INTERESTING STORY: “I began my career in RV Service at the age of 58. For years I had enjoyed camping and from time to time would work on friends RV’s. In my younger years I worked in industry as an Electronics Technician so I already had a good background for troubleshooting many RV problems. I love the work I now do and enjoy being around the people that love camping.” 2x3 Bob Cook Sr. ABOUT BOB COOK Sr.: Bob is a graduate of the Northampton Community College RV Training Program. He then went on to receive his certification as an RVIA/RVDA Master Certified Technician. Between 1975 and 1998 Bob was a fulltime firefighter and worked up through the ranks to the position of Salisbury Chief. Bob is still very active in the community. A little known fact There are less than 2,500 RV 2x2 technicians in the U.S. who have their master’s certification AND BOB IS ONE OF THEM. When you call Bob Cook, you work with a solid, reliable technician who’s gone above and beyond to master his trade. Bob can be reached at 978-609-5571 and his new store is open near the Black Bear Campground across from the Dunkin Donuts off Rt. 286, exit 60 from I-95. Available For Emergency Service - 7 Days A Week - At No Additional Charge. If you would like to be featured, call Greg at The Town Common 978-948-8696

If your property has been correctly priced for the market, the following tips will help take you to the closing table more quickly and for a higher selling price: 1. Floors - If your carpets are stained, matted and old looking, buyers picture their own bare feet or their small children in contact with such flooring and it is disturbing. If possible, remove any/all carpeting that cannot be made clean and clean looking especially if there is hardwood underneath the carpeting. Buyers love hardwood floors which are easier to keep clean. 2. Make Space - Clear the halls, rooms, closets, porches, decks to make the space that buyers find so desirable. The collections of knick knacks, dolls, trains, teacups, ball caps on the walls, pictures on the piano, magnets and “to do” lists on the refrigerator are among the precious items in our homes. The key is to turn the home we live in into the uncluttered and spacious “house” we sell. 3. Freshen - Using walls to measure growing children over the years is a tradition with many families. Children’s rooms are often painted and decorated to reflect their personal favorite characters or themes. Sometimes it’s hard to paint over the memories, but buyers do not necessarily share the same taste in décor.

and larger. 9. Wallpaper - Many buyers today do not like wallpaper. They like paint. For those who do like wallpaper, the taste in colors and design is so diverse that the chance of consumers liking your wallpaper is slim. If your wallpaper is worn or especially if it is drooping or detaching from a bathroom wall, you’ll make no mistake by getting rid of it and replacing it with a fresh coat of paint. The more you can do to make your property as appealing as possible to the most people (while you spend as little as possible yourself) is the goal. 10. Exterior/Yard - Consumers do drivebys. If they do not like what they see on the outside, they will not come to see the inside. Hedges should be neatly trimmed and nothing should be growing over the windows or over the walkways. Place a plant on the door step. Keep all toys and equipment stored away. Paint the hand rails, steps and front door. That area is the first “touch” impression the buyer experiences and it should not be rusted or worn. Have as stress free an experience as possible while your home is on the market. The process is not one that lends itself to fun-filled days. It takes a lot of hard work and personal sacrifice to do it right but as your most valuable asset, you get back what you give. Good Luck! neutrality when the object is to appeal to the largest numbers of consumers. Selling real estate is about drawing as many “numbers” as possible through the door as quickly as possible. Once they enter the home, it only takes one to buy the “house”. 4. Brighten/Lighten - If your property has a photographer’s dark room, it should be the only dark room in the house. White or light colors make a space appear larger and sunshine reflects more brightly off of such colors. Shades should be pulled up. Curtains should be drawn back. Lights should be on with medium to high wattage bulbs used during all showings. 5. Odors - Pets, smoke, many cooking aromas (like fish), and musty smells are all turn offs to buyers. The best first and last scent a buyer should smell when entering or leaving your property is “clean”. Strong candles and sprays leave buyers wondering what smell is being covered up. No animal litter boxes should be visible during showings. Many buyers have pet allergies and there should be no sign of pet hair around if possible. 6. Sensitive Hobbies - Mounted moose and bear heads may leave a lasting impression with some buyers who otherwise would have purchased your property. 7. Flowers - Special touches around walkways soften the front entrance to the home. Pretty bouquets on a table or counter soften the interior and with plenty of space and light leave a happy impression. 8. Kitchens and baths - These rooms should sparkle and smell clean. If you are not sure what to leave on top of counters in these rooms, the best decision is to remove everything. Clean lines are very
keep the title to your home; the lender does not become the title holder. You own and can remain in your home as long as you meet all the Reverse Mortgage requirements. Is any home eligible for a Reverse Mortgage? Generally, single-family, two-to-four-unit owner-occupied dwellings, townhouses, approved condominium units and some manufactured homes are eligible for a Reverse Mortgage. The home must meet FHA minimum property standards. If home repairs are required, in some cases they can be completed after closing funds from the Reverse Mortgage. Does a Reverse Mortgage affect my eligibility for Social Security or Medicare benefits? A Reverse Mortgage usually does not affect eligibility for Medicare or Social Security benefits. Some government benefits, such as Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), may be affected my a Reverse Mortgage. You should consult a qualified professional to determine if there would be any impact to your government benefits. Are there income or credit score requirements necessary to qualify? No. There are no credit score and generally no income income requirements. If you have any questions or would like to see how much you qualify for, please contact George Manemnaus (MLO 5270) at Multi-State Mortgage, Inc. Dental Water Lines – Part 1
B J. P S. C, DMD
This column and the one to follow discuss the issues involved with the water used in the dental office. Water that is used in the dental office is usually the same town water that people drink, use to cook and bathe in. However, in the dental office, the water sits around in plastic tubing and “things” can grow in plastic tubing. Wouldn’t you like to know that the water being squirt into your mouth is clean? I am bringing this up because it is an often overlooked part of the dental office and is important to consider. The information was obtained from the ADA website. What are biofilms? Biofilms are microscopic communities that consist primarily of naturally occurring water bacteria and fungi. They form thin layers on virtually all surfaces, including dental water delivery systems. These common microbes or germs accumulate inside things like
showerheads, faucets and fountains, and in the thin tubes used to deliver water in dental treatment. Will biofilms harm me? Scientific reports have not linked illness to water passing through dental waterlines. In our environment, we are exposed to countless germs or bacteria. Yet, exposure to these common microbes does not mean that an individual will get an infection or a disease. However, when a person’s immune system is compromised because of age, smoking, heavy drinking, being a transplant or cancer patient or because of HIV infection, he or she may have more difficulty fighting off the invading germs. This is why the ADA encourages patients who may have weakened immune systems to inform their dentist at the beginning of any treatment. That way, the patient and dentist together can make the right treatment decisions. What has been done to prevent me from being exposed to someone else’s saliva during dental treatment? The ADA recommends that dentists follow the infection control guidelines of the ADA and CDC. These recommendations include the sterilization of dental instruments and the flushing of waterlines between patients. Additionally, the recommendations call for the installation and maintenance
Eat, Drink
of anti-retraction devices, where appropriate. All these measures should help prevent exposure to someone else’s saliva. What is the ADA goal for dental unit water? In 1995, the ADA set a goal for water quality. It called for equipment to be available by the year 2000 that can provide unfiltered water with no more than 200 CFU/ml (colony-forming units per milliliter). That's the same standard as for kidney dialysis machines, and it's a goal that manufacturers are working toward. The Food and Drug Administration has recently cleared a number of new products to improve water quality and time is needed to evaluate their effectiveness. The Association encourages manufacturers of new products to submit those products to the ADA Seal of Acceptance program for evaluation. I will continue next week with some more information. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Temper your typical Aries urge to charge into a situation and demand answers. Instead, let the Lamb's gentler self emerge to deal with a problem that requires delicacy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You are aware of what's going on, so continue to stand by your earlier decision, no matter how persuasive the counter-arguments might be. Money pressures soon will ease. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) By all means, have fun and enjoy your newly expanded social life. But don't forget that some people are depending on you to keep promises that are very important to them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You need to wait patiently for an answer to a workplace problem and not push for a decision. Remember: Time is on your side. A financial matter needs closer attention.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) You now have information that can influence that decision you planned to make. But the clever Cat will consult a trusted friend or family member before making a major move. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Good news: You're finding that more doors are opening for you to show what you can do, and you don't even have to knock very hard to get the attention you're seeking. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your gift for creating order out of chaos will help you deal with a sudden rush of responsibilities that would threaten someone less able to balance his or her priorities. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. Your energy levels are coming right back up to normal -- just in time to help you tackle some worthwhile challenges and make some important choices. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sage Sagittarian should demand a
May 2 - 8, 2012 full explanation of inconsistencies that might be cropping up in what had seemed to be a straightforward deal. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A conflict between obligations to family and to the job can create stressful problems. Best advice: Balance your dual priorities so that one doesn't outweigh the other. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don't guess, speculate or gossip about that so-called "mystery" situation at the workplace. Bide your time. An explanation will be forthcoming very soon. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Boredom might be creeping in and causing you to lose interest in a repeat project. Deal with it by flipping over your usual routine and finding a new way to do an old task. BORN THIS WEEK: You can warm the coldest heart with your lyrical voice and bright smile. You find yourself at home, wherever you are. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
