A L e t t e r f r o m t h e p r es i d e n t s

Welcome to The Town Hall. “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from, you are welcome here….” So said the League of Political Education when they opened Town Hall as a monument to women’s suffrage in 1921. The Hall was built to hold the League’s Town Meetings, those boisterous evenings they hosted to discuss all sides of important issues. They knew that opening minds through life-long learning was required not just with new voters, but for all voters. So everyone was welcomed. It was a young violinist from Spain, Juan Manen, who first brought music to the hall. Later that year, Richard Strauss came from Germany to play piano for a series of recitals. The acoustics McKim, Mead & White had designed for conversation worked equally well for music. Our inclusionary policy welcoming all is the same for music. From day one, Town Hall has welcomed visitors and performers from every walk of life from every corner of the world. And so this weekend we welcome to Town Hall two legendary global icons to the Town Hall stage. Baaba Maal is back in New York after a long absence. An international music ambassador, his music is celebrated throughout the world. Baaba is joined by the Town Hall Ensemble, under the direction of Steven Bernstein. The Ensemble features some of New York’s most renowned musicians who bring with them a broad spectrum of styles and voices, something The Town Hall has embraced for nearly a century. Anoushka Shankar is a singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes. Her dynamic and spiritual musicality has garnered several prestigious accolades including six Grammy® Award nominations. We are proud to say that Town Hall has a long history with Anoushka and her family. Her father, Ravi, first performed at Town Hall in 1956. So while this weekend is special, it is not out of the ordinary for Town Hall. From everyone at Town Hall - thank you for coming. Please enjoy the shows.

While American audiences have heard him recently — his voice soaring in the Academy Award-winning soundtrack of Black Panther by Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson — this will be Maal’s first performance in New York City in 8 years. For the event, he will be accompanied by the Town Hall Ensemble directed by trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader Steven Bernstein, augmented by members of Maal’s own band on African percussion and bass. “I am very excited to be performing with the Town Hall Ensemble,” said Maal, discussing the one-of-a-kind program. “I love the energy that comes with a large band such as this. The mix of different instruments and styles of playing gives me a lot of freedom to experiment. I won’t say anything else now because it’s going to be a surprise!” For Bernstein, whose ductility as a writer and player has led to collaborations with artists as disparate as Phish’s vocalist and guitarist Trey Anastasio, trombonist Roswell Rudd and The Band’s late drummer Levon Helm, collaborating with Maal “is an incredible opportunity.” He muses about translating the sound of the traditional kora, the delicate 21-string lute from West Africa, to horns; having a Brazilian percussionist as part of the ensemble, “giving a different flavor to the music,” or expanding on Maal’s horn section sound (“It has a lot of salsa feeling, ” notes Bernstein.) “I’ve been listening African music since I was in late high school,” he said.” This is going to be really exciting and it opens something brand new for me.” @TownHallNYC @TownHallNYC || 33

P ro gra m Ensemble, n o t es featuring some of the best musicians in New York City comprises The Town Hall Nels Cline, guitar; Lakecia Benjamin, sax; Marika Hughes, cello; Marc Cary, piano and keyboards; JT Lewis, drums; Bria Skonberg, trumpet; Ricardo Rodriguez, bass; Scott Robinson, sax; Marcus Rojas, tuba; Mauro Refosco, percussion; Sara Jacovino, violin; Christina Courtin, violin. The Town Hall Ensemble was created by Bernstein and artistic director M.A. Papper in 2017 to perform a series of concerts revisiting the sound and spirit of landmark moments in the venue’s history, setting the stage for Town Hall’s 100th anniversary in 2021. Built by a group of suffragists (The League for Political Education) fighting for women’s right to vote, the Town Hall opened on January 12, 1921 as a meeting space to debate the important issues of the day. Since then, many artists-activists have taken to its stage. Baaba Maal, who throughout his career has often embodied the notion of artistic excellence in service of social change, stands as a continuation of the Hall´s special mission. “From very early on he became such a warrior for social justice,” said Bernstein. “It’s so fitting we are doing this concert with him.” In the early 2000s, Maal was appointed as a youth emissary for the United Nations Development Program (2003), and global ambassador for Oxfam, focusing especially on women’s and children’s rights in Africa. He has stated that he intends “to be the voice for the people in Africa’s rural communities. I want to offer them a chance to be part of the future development of Africa.” His latest project, based in his native Senegal but with a broad African goal, is NAAN-K, an organization that focuses on farming, fishing, and raising livestock, framed in 21st century technology. Maal´s most recent album was The Traveller (2016), which was accompanied by a short film with the same title. The film focused on his annual Blues du Fleuve festival, which takes place in the northern Senegal region of Fouta. “I don’t regard myself as a politician,” Maal told The Guardian about his role as an artist. “But in our society, we use songs to express what the people are feeling. Musicians are closer to society in Africa - we use our voice to say what the people expect from their leaders.” Musically, Maal is a curious and adventurous cosmopolitan seemingly always open to genre-blurring collaborations. His music has been a continuously evolving mix of traditional Senegalese music, various strains of Western music and technology. His band, Daande Lenol (“The Voice of the People”) included Western as well as African instruments. The horn arrangements would hint at soul, R&B or the vigor and spice of the great Latin dance bands. He has collaborated with music makers as disparate as Brian Eno, Howie B., members of New York’s Brazilian Girls, The Very Best, Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, and the British band Mumford and Sons. “I’m a nomad,” he told London’s New Statesman. “I like to write music with people from all backgrounds, Celtic, Brazilian, urban, electronic ... Me, I come from a traditional background, but I’m not afraid to go like a nomad into things like that. Traveling all over the world…talking to people, it’s really interesting to see how people are living, how they are thinking. Even the five minutes you spend with someone – just to say hello, to ask where they come from, it’s really inspiring. It opens your eyes and mind.” 4 | @TownHallNYC

The Town Hall Ensemble (THE) celebrates the diversity and ingenuity of New York City, this evening marking its third live performance. In its inaugural concert in October 2017, The Town Hall Ensemble paid tribute to Coretta Scott King’s Freedom Concerts, which she debuted at The Town Hall in 1964. In May 2018, the Ensemble celebrated Bob Dylan’s first major concert of New York City in 1963. Under the direction of trumpeter Steven Bernstein the Ensemble features New York musicians from a broad spectrum of styles. The group embodies the many voices of New York City, as The Town hall has done for nearly a century.

STEVEN BERNSTEIN | MUSICAL DIRECTOR An impactful presence on the New York scene over the past 30 years, trumpeter, composer, arranger and bandleader Steven Bernstein has immersed himself in such a wide array of music with his bands Sexmob (his primary vehicle for exploring the slide trumpet, a rare instrument that he picked up in a Woodstock guitar shop back in 1977), Millennial Territory Orchestra, Diaspora Soul, Universal Melody Brass Band, Spanish Fly, Blue Campfire and the Butler-Bernstein Hot 9 that he defies easy categorization. A former member of the Lounge Lizards and Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band, Bernstein has also composed works for film, theater and dance in addition to doing arrangements for a diverse list of artists ranging from Lou Reed to Lee “Scratch” Perry, Allen Toussaint, Marianne Faithfull, Linda Ronstadt, Rufus Wainwright, Darlene Love, Mario Pavone, Bill Frisell, John Lurie and the Kansas City All-Stars. His lengthy list of sideman credits includes recent recordings by Laurie Anderson ( Heart of a Dog), Roswell Rudd ( Trombone for Lovers), Mostly Other People Do The Killing ( Loafer’s Hollow), Antony and the Johnsons ( Turning) and Nels Cline ( Lovers). He also continues to perform with Ray Anderson’s Pocket Brass Band, Omaha Diner and the Kamikaze Ground Crew. @TownHallNYC | 5

TOUR THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
