A L e tt e r f r o m t h e p r e s id e n t s
To our loyal Broadway by the Year® Subscribers: Welcome back to the third installment of Broadway by the Year® for 2019. Quite often we are asked, why doesn’t Town Hall host a Broadway musical? After all, with 1501 seats, we would rank between the Winter Garden and the Neil Simon in terms of capacity. To answer your question, we would suggest that you look at our back curtain which hides a concrete wall. Examine the doors on stage right and stage left that open to very small entryways with no wings. Finally, check out sloped ceiling. You can see there is no place to land a helicopter, change scenery, or bring in a giant ape. Town Hall was built for public speaking, so that everyone could listen to and converse with a person or two. Early on, our founders understood that the acoustics, designed for the human voice, worked equally well for music. And so Town Hall can only be used for concerts and public speaking. How great that with Scott at the helm tonight, we will get both. We would also like to acknowledge Bank of America whose generous support makes Broadway by the Year® possible. They truly believe the arts matter and are one of the leading corporate supporters of arts in the world, partnering with more than 2,000 nonprofit arts institutions annually. Their arts program is just one part of their commitment to grow responsibly while bringing value to economies, society, and the communities they serve. Thank you, Bank of America, for being a good neighbor to Town Hall – we are grateful for your continued support. And thanks once again to the Edythe Kenner Foundation, who have supported Broadway by the Year® since its inception nineteen years ago. So, sit back, as we travel back to 1965 and 1978; two very good years for Broadway and for Town Hall. On behalf of the Trustees of Town Hall, thank you for joining us tonight.

A B O U T T HE P RO G RA M The critically acclaimed series has blossomed from an idea to what Show Business Weekly deems, “...an invaluable and entertaining jewel in the cabaret crown of New York.” Ticket sales have soared and stellar reviews have included The New York Times, which calls it, “Witty, breezily paced... informative ... valuable... the right perspective of lighthearted nostalgia...” Author/Critic Scott Siegel created the series for Town Hall, which he writes, directs, and hosts. Siegel takes audiences of all ages on a musical tour of the Great White Way, offering an entertaining verbal account of Broadway’s history. Each evening this season celebrates the songs from Broadway shows from two different years, divided only by an intermission. The songs are performed by a cast of handpicked Broadway and nightclub stars.
SCOTT SIEGEL Scott Siegel has created more than 300 major concerts that have been performed all over the world. He has written/produced/directed concerts for Michael Feinstein, created scores of nightclub acts that have played at major clubs around the globe, but is, perhaps, best known as the creator/writer/director/host of Town Hall’s signature series, Broadway by the Year®, which is currently celebrating its 19th critically acclaimed season. For more information about all of Scott’s shows, please visit Scott’s website at SiegelPresents.com

TOUR THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
