A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTS

Dear Friends, On behalf of everyone at Town Hall, it is our pleasure to welcome you to our 2018 Gala, our annual celebration where we say “thank you” to you, our friends and supporters. We speak for everyone at Town Hall – from our Trustees, Advisory Councils, staff, teaching artists and performers when we say, “thank you for joining us tonight, thank you for your support, and thank you for being part of the Town Hall family.” It is your continued support that inspires us, reinforces our belief in the work and keeps us doing our best year after year. We hope you will take the time to read our Annual Report on our activities; we know you will share the pride we have in the range of programs, in the work we are doing in the New York City Public Schools and in the myriad of ways we are reaching out to the community. We are excited to welcome three old friends of Town Hall as recipients of our Friends of the Arts Awards for 2018. These outstanding individuals, each with a long history of involvement with Town Hall, reflect the nature of what it means to be true artists, true visionaries and true givers. We are delighted that they will join our past awardees and their pictures will forever grace the halls of our cherished institution. Congratulations to Laurie, Bob and Charlie and to our entire Town Hall family.

OUR HONOREES Laurie Anderson One of America’s most renowned and daring creative pioneers, Laurie Anderson is as diverse as she is prolific. Laurie has cast herself in roles as varied as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist, and instrumentalist. In the early ‘70s, Laurie burst onto the New York avant-garde/music/art/performance scene and quickly acquired a fervent following in the underground arts community. Her recording career took off in 1981, when her song “O Superman” rose to #2 on the British pop music charts, leading to a seven-album deal with Warner Brothers. A deluxe box set of her Warner Brothers output, Talk Normal, was released in the fall of 2000 on Rhino/Warner Archives. The following year, she released her first record for Nonesuch Records, “Life on a String.” A year later, Live in New York, recorded at Town Hall, was released. Laurie has toured the United States and abroad numerous times with shows that range from simple spoken word performances to highly elaborate multimedia events like United States I-V (1983), Empty Places (1990), The Nerve Bible (1995), and Songs and Stories for Moby Dick (1999-2000). Her visual work has been presented in major museums in the United States and Europe. As a composer, Laurie contributed music to films by Wim Wenders and Jonathan Demme; dance pieces by Bill T. Jones, Trisha Brown, and Molissa Fenley; a score for Robert LePage’s theater production, Far Side of the Moon; and pieces for National Public Radio, the BBC, and Seville’s Expo ‘92. Laurie is recognized worldwide as a groundbreaking leader in the use of technology in the arts. In the late ’90s, as a collaborator with Interval Research Corporation—a laboratory founded by Paul 4

Allen and David Liddle—she created the Talking Stick, a six-foot-long MIDI controller that she used in the Moby Dick tour. In 2002, she was appointed the first-ever artist-in-residence at NASA, a stint that yielded her 2004 solo piece, The End of the Moon. In 2007 she received the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize and in 2011, the Pratt Institute’s Honorary Legend Award. Her Habeas Corpus exhibition at the Park Avenue Armory in 2016 garnered Yoko Ono’s annual Courage Award for the Arts. Laurie’s film and visual projects include numerous videos, the high definition film Hidden Inside Mountains, a series of audiovisual installations, Heart of a Dog and Chalkroom, a virtual reality collaboration with Hsin-Chien Huang which received Best VR Experience at the Venice Film Festival 2017. Laurie has performed at The Town Hall over four decades.

Robert Hurwitz FOR 32 YEARS, Robert Hurwitz was president of Nonesuch Records, arguably one of the most diverse and influential record labels in the world. In 1984, when Bob took over Nonesuch, it was primarily a classical music label and home of the Explorer series. During his tenure, Bob proceeded to vastly expand the company’s catalogue by adding jazz, rock, folk, bluegrass, musical theater, and modern world music.

Charles Hull Originally from Vienna, Austria, Charles Hull was stationed in England serving in the U.S. Air Force when he accompanied a fellow officer to an audition of Stalag 17 that resulted with scoring his first role in a theatrical production. In 1960, Hull moved to New York and was featured in many TV commercials and off-Broadway productions prior to founding TheaterWorksUSA, with the late Jay Harnick and Bob Adams, in 1961. Under his 39-year tenure, TheaterWorksUSA grew to become America’s largest and foremost Equity theatre for children and family audiences. Its mission is to create imaginative and sophisticated shows that are both entertaining and thoughtprovoking and to ensure that those shows are accessible to audiences across America. The company has reached over 100 million people in 49 states and Canada, and now performs for over two million young people annually, selecting shows from its ever-growing repertoire of 133 plays and musicals. TheaterWorksUSA has a distinguished history of not only providing young audiences with their first taste of the performing arts, but also giving young actors, writers, directors and designers an early opportunity to work in their field.

Among the many composers, musicians, songwriters, and performers he has signed, produced, or worked with are: John Adams, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Kronos Quartet, Caetano Veloso, Astor Piazzolla, Stephen Sondheim, Adam Guettel, Mandy Patinkin, Audra McDonald, Brad Mehldau, Chris Thile, Pat Metheny, Josh Redman, Bill Frisell, Dawn Upshaw, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Jeremy Denk, Richard Goode, Gidon Kremer, Randy Newman, The Magnetic Fields, k.d. lang, The Punch Brothers, Natalie Merchant, and Lake Street Dive. As well as this year’s co-honoree, Laurie Anderson. Now, as Chairman Emeritus of Nonesuch Records, Bob remains closely involved with many of the artists he brought to the company, serving as an Executive Producer for a dozen projects a year. Bob is the Aaron Copland Chair at the New School College of Performing Arts, where he’s taught for the past 12 years and for the last two years he’s taught as a Visiting Professor at UCLA.

Hull’s most notable achievements for TheaterWorksUSA include initiating a subscription series in a prestigious off-Broadway theater and developing a field trip program, initially at Town Hall, and then spreading across the country, reaching millions of kids every year. Hull was also President of the Producers League of Theatre for Young Audiences, President of Producers Association of Children’s Theatre (PACT), and was awarded the Medal of Honor from the Actor’s Fund. 5

2017 18 REPORT WE ARE THRILLED to report that Town Hall’s 97th Presenting Season showcased the talents of artists from around the world. From great Flamenco and Fado artists to renowned writers and musicians, we filled the hall with world-class entertainment and a variety of new and established performers. As always, we were pleased to be able to present a roster of artists who reflect the diversity of New York CIty and provide educational programming in the arts to thousands of public schoolchildren. We also were able to pilot a new education program on Rikers Island, reaching young men, ages 18-21. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our loyal trustees, members, and friends as well as corporate, government, and foundation supporters whose confidence in our work reinforces our belief that we are making an impact on the cultural landscape of New York City and its residents.

Familia Habichuela: Legendary Dynasties

8

The 2017-18 season offered 19 diverse artistic presentations through musical concerts and literary events. In September, we presented the David Bromberg Birthday Concert with special guest Bettye LaVette. In October, we presented John Green: Turtles All the Way Down. Green is the bestselling author of books such as “The Fault in Our Stars.” Joined by his brother Hank Green for this multi-media event, John discussed his latest book and the two brothers performed live music.

We also debuted The Town Hall Ensemble, our all-star collective that celebrates the cultural and musical history of NYC. In “City Suite,” they celebrated the 100th anniversary of the vote for women in New York. Led by Steven Bernstein, the program featured an exciting collection of some of NYC’s greatest musicians and composers. They also celebrated the legacy of Bob Dylan at The Town Hall in “Tomorrow is a Long Time,” a reimagining of his breakout concert at Town on April 12, 1963. With special guests such as Steve Buscemi, Bill Murray, Lisa Fischer, and Laurie Anderson, the Ensemble paid tribute to Dylan and this legendary concert, with new renditions of both timeless and rare Dylan songs. In December, performance artist Taylor Mac made his Town Hall debut in Taylor Mac’s 24 Decade History: Holiday Sauce. The performance included a band of 8 musicians, dynamic special guests, who reframed classic holiday tunes to celebrate diversity. In January, we presented Flamenco and Afrobeat performer Buika,

featuring Camila Meza and the Nectar Orchestra. February included All the Things I Lost in the Flood with Laurie Anderson. The multimedia performances that evening included readings, music, visuals, and electronics based on Anderson’s new book of the same title.

In March, we presented Andrew Lloyd Webber UNMASKED, with special guest host Glenn Close. Andrew Lloyd Webber introduced and discussed his new memoir in this exclusive literary event. We next presented The Chieftains. Since 1962, The Chieftains have been highly recognized for reinventing traditional Irish music on a contemporary and International scale. The Town Hall has proudly presented The Chieftains biennially since the 1980’s. We also presented Familia Habichuela: Legendary Dynasties, featuring Pepe Habichuela and Josemi Carmona; with special guests Arturo & Adam O’Farrill. This performance celebrated 60 years of flamenco guitar rooted in tradition and innovation. Finally, acclaimed singer-songwriters Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell and Dar Williams reunited their celebrated folk-pop collaboration, Cry Cry Cry. April began with Carlos do Carmo - with special guest Celeste Rodrigues. It was a historic night for fado music when Portugal’s do Carmo performed for the first time in NYC. This program showcased his career of more than 50 years as the leading male voice of fado. The month of May brought Django A GoGo 2018 to Town Hall. Acclaimed guitarist, Stephane Wrembel, presented a celebration of the music and spirit of Django Reinhardt. We also presented A Flawless Night: Long Live The Queen! paying tribute to Flawless Mother Sabrina through special 50th Anniversary screening of the film, The Queen, a documentary about the famed drag contest held at Town Hall. Performers and friends then performed a musical tribute. We continued with the 19th season of our subscription series Broadway by the Year® where Scott Siegel and performers took audiences on a musical tour of Broadway. Performers included Emily Skinner, Carolee Carmello, and more and took place on Feb 26, Mar 26, May 21, & June 18. This culminated with Broadway Rising Stars, which introduced audiences to the next generation of Broadway talent. Participants included recent graduates from the country’s top performing arts schools. 9

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The TOWN HALL SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM provided 28 high school students the opportunity to explore arts-related industries as a career path. Interns were between the ages of 16 and 18 and represented all five boroughs of New York City. The program took place at six performing arts organizations including: The Town Hall, Alvin Ailey Camp, LUX/Future Proof, Jay Michaels Arts and Entertainment, CityKids Foundation, and Theater for the New City. The Town Hall sought to provide an opportunity that was mutually beneficial to both the participating students and our partnering arts organizations, and matched each intern with an organization that aligned with the student’s interests and specific skill-sets. The program

furnished teens with practical and creative skills, which gave them an enriching experience that boosted their self-confidence and eagerness to succeed. Interns also attended two-hour weekly seminars led by arts professionals, and were given weekly journal prompts and recommended readings by a Town Hall mentor. Over the course of the summer, students showed both emotional and intellectual growth. We are privileged to have worked with these students at a pivotal time in their lives, and are proud to have provided necessary tools for professional and personal success. We believe this program is a valuable stepping stone for young professionals who are determined to achieve and to maximize their potential.

EDUCATION OUTREACH During the 2017-18 school year, Town Hall continued our robust arts in education outreach program (EOP), which placed 31 teaching artists in residency at 21 schools throughout New York City. Skilled in the disciplines of dance, theatre, music, and visual arts, teaching artists led students at each school in classroom workshops that culminated in performances that were attended by their teachers, peers, and families. This past year, Town Hall brought a Verbatim Theatre program to seniors (age 60+) at Project Find’s Woodstock Senior Center led by Town Hall Director of Education Emma Klauber and Teaching Artist Zoe Watkins. Workshops were designed to include drama exercises, storytelling, group sharing, and individual reflection. A final video was created and presented before an audience with each participant reenacting a peer’s personal history rather than their own. Each participating senior left the program with a better understanding of theatre and its role in creative expression and conversation.

“Feel Me: Find Out Who We Are”: Working with incarcerated youth In June 2018, Town Hall launched a pilot theatre program for incarcerated youth, ages 18-21, who are detained on Rikers Island. Two professional teaching artists worked with 10 young male detainees inside the detention center for 10 hours over a weeks to create theatrical pieces from each participant’s own personal experiences. These young men participated in creative activities such as playwriting, acting, movement & improvisation.

18

Youth collaborated to create a book of poetry entitled, “FEEL ME: Find Out Who We Are.” In their culminating presentation, the men expressed what they learned by sharing these pieces with an audience of their peers. Through this program, these men were able to make their voices heard and reveal their feelings about their life experiences.

WE PROUDLY SALUTE LAURIE ANDERSON CHARLES HULL ROBERT HURWITZ

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION Stefon Harris shared his insights on the notable jazz artists of the Harlem Renaissance

In our 21st year of partnership with Con Edison and with the generous assistance from the Ford Foundation, The Town Hall presented vibraphone virtuoso and jazz historian Stefon Harris on our stage as our featured Black History Month performer. Almost 4,000 New York City public school children attended four performances and learned about jazz’s cultural significance and the importance of creative expression through an art form. Prior to the performances, classroom teachers were provided study guides curated by The Town Hall staff to give the students an idea about what to expect from the presentation. For many of the children, this was their first time attending a live concert and visiting a historic landmark in the heart of New York City, as well as their first exposure to improvised music. The study guide detailed the instruments in the quartet, including the lesser-known signature piece, the vibraphone. Stefon gave a very informative lecture on the scientific workings of the vibraphone and how the sound is shaped within the instrument, as well as a discussion of how jazz improvisers communicate with each other through musical phrasing. The audience of youngsters was incredibly engaged. Also outlined in the study guides were the biographies of Stefon and his bandmates (James Francies, Jonathan Barber and Ben Williams), along with the notable jazz artists of the Harlem Renaissance. These artists included Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker, all of whom gave memorable performances at or had ties to The Town Hall.

A little Milanese, a little Venetian and a lot of fish and pasta. Try the swordfish carpaccio, antipasto spread or luscious pastas. Part of the reason for the pretheatre crowd is a reasonable pretheatre prix-fixe.
