Welcome! And, may I add, congratulations. You are attending one of New York’s and America’s essential meeting houses, music venues and cultural institutions. I know that you will find the Town Hall Presents programming you are attending tonight to be timely and compelling. And each of our productions is an expression of our commitment to bring you significant, unique, eclectic and down right delightful events throughout the calendar year.
There is no place like The Town Hall. Founded “to promote good citizenship, social justice and general enlightenment through the education and expression of public opinion,” our hall’s world-class acoustics quickly became a calling card, and for over a century, playing The Town Hall stage continues to be a ‘must’ for musicians and singers from all genres and backgrounds.
Whether visiting our storied auditorium for the first time, or returning to experience yet another great night live on our stage, you can feel the vitality in the room. The Town Hall is truly contemporary; purpose-built to open its doors to art, ideas and especially to you.
Upon its dedication in 1921, The League for Political Education opened the building you are now sitting in with the watchwords:
“It does not matter who you are, what you are, or from where you come, you are welcome.”
As president of the non-profit organization that preserves our landmarked auditorium and produces the Town Hall Presents events like the one you are attending tonight, I thank you for coming to The Town Hall. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, and our incredible staff of professionals, I echo the sentiment of our founders and assure you that you are always welcome here.
Nevin Steinberg몽환 Dream like Fantasy
Expressing the harmony of the east and west, Dream like Fantasy is written for the 12-stringed Gayageum and cello and is the first piece ever written by the Duo.
An Unusual Cowboy
Imagining a cowboy heading eastward instead of west, this composition captures the wide range of expression of both western and eastern musical spectrums through the cello and gayageum, freely traversing between them.
Ut!
UT! (엇!) is a new CelloGayageum composition in 2022, which is based on the traditional Korean rhythm of utmori(hence the title). Utmori is a unique jangdan(rhythm) which consists of five or ten beats in a relatively fast tempo, and is not a commonly used jangdan compared to others. On top of cellist groovy bassline(which has a strong resemblance to the sound of an upright jazz bass), Gayageum’s skill and creative wit on her 12-string gayageum.
Sound of the Ocean
This composition, solely inspired by the sea, captures both the beauty and overwhelming power of the ocean simultaneously.
Afterlife
The cello and gayageum unfold a dialogue reminiscent of an imagined afterlife, expressing themes of death and eternity.
운하 Am Kanal
This piece portrays the canals of Ahuhrich, a city in Germany, tracing the journey of the cello and gayageum from their origins in Germany to their collaboration in Korea.
This composition captures the ambiance of the bustling streets of Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty. The interplay of cello and gayageum creates a percussive rhythm, evoking the sensation of a hurried journey through the cityscape.
ENCORE
In this piece an arrangement of the three of Korea’s representative folk songs, “Arirang,” “Jindo Arirang,” and “Miryang Arirang,” in the style of cello and gayageum.
ABOUT CELLOGAYAGEUM
CelloGayageum is an exceptional intercultural musical duo comprised of cellist Sol Daniel Kim and Gayageum player Dayoung Yoon. Drawing inspiration from the “Pavillon of Unification” in Berlin, a city with a tragic history of war, division, and reunification, they have seamlessly blended the musical cultures and instruments of the cello and Gayageum to create a harmonious symbiosis in both sound and style.
Formed in 2016, CelloGayageum has gained worldwide recognition and accolades. They were honored with the prestigious Soorim Culture Prize, and their debut album, South Wave, North Wind, was produced with the help of a grant from the Seoul Foundation of Arts and Culture. Moreover, they were named “Artist of the Year” by the Jeongdong Theater in Seoul, solidifying their place as one of the most exciting and innovative musical acts today.
CelloGayageum’s passion for traditional South Korean music is evident in their performances, which have captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. They have appeared on several popular Korean primetime TV shows, including KBS, JTBC, and MBN, and have toured extensively throughout Asia, Europe, and beyond. As cultural ambassadors, they are promoting the traditional music culture of South Korea and bridging cultural divides through the universal language of music.
In short, CelloGayageum is not just a musical duo, but a phenomenon. Their unique fusion of instruments and musical styles creates a sound that is both timeless and contemporary. By showcasing the beauty and richness of South Korean music to audiences around the world, they are redefining what it means to be a global musical act.

THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL
As of Jan 31, 2024
Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 100 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory won by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
