A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTS On behalf of everyone at Town Hall, we welcome you to Broadway Rising Stars. This is another great night for us, as it represents the end of The Town Hall Presents season and the beginning of great artistic careers. For many of tonight’s talented performers, this represents their professional debut. We congratulate each and every one of them, and wish them great success in the future. In many ways, tonight’s Broadway Rising Stars’ debuts are in the tradition of all things Town Hall. The League of Political Education, a women’s suffragist organization, built the hall to host their “Town Meetings” to help New Yorkers become informed citizens. However, it became immediately clear that the perfect acoustics not only enhanced the human voice, but music as well. So for the past 97 Years, The Town Hall has been famous for its “debuts” and “breakout” concerts for dozens of legendary performers. This list includes Marian Anderson, Isaac Stern, Alice Tully, Bob Dylan, Glenn Gould, Nina Simone, and Leonard Cohen, as well as the first bebop concert featuring Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and the first cabaret concert featuring Mabel Mercer and Bobby Short. This season included the debut of the Town Hall Ensemble, a group of phenomenal musicians led by the brilliant Steven Bernstein. The Ensemble performed two outstanding concerts evoking Town Hall’s past and envisioning its future. The first, City Suite, harkened back to the 1958 concert of Paul Robeson with its messages of freedom, hope and equality. Performances included Lisa Fischer singing Coretta Scott King’s songs from her Freedom Concerts, which debuted at Town Hall, and Eric Mingus singing “Freedom,” written and debuted by his father, Charlie Mingus on the Town Hall Stage in 1964. The second Ensemble concert reimagined the 1963 Town Hall concert of Bob Dylan. It was Dylan’s first major concert and included songs of protest, hardship and freedom and became the soundtrack of an entire generation. Guests who performed with the Ensemble included Bill Murray singing “Don’t Think Twice” and Laurie Anderson performing “Talkin New York.” We congratulate The Town Hall Ensemble, it’s creator, M.A. Papper, and we look forward to many great nights with them. We are thrilled for tonight’s concert and thank all of the mothers and fathers, families, teachers and tutors who have worked so hard to help their stars get here. And we thank Scott and Barbara Siegel, John Fischer, Rick Hinkson, Favra Alvin, Holly Cruz, Joe Burke, Nili Bassman and everyone who has worked hard over the past many months to make it possible for each of our Broadway Rising Stars to shine. Thank you for coming, we know you are all in for a special treat,

B rittneyann Accetta (AMDA) A native of the East Coast, Brittneyann found her niche in the industry at the early age of 2, when she booked her first commercial for Toys R Us. At 4, she scored a supporting role in the feature film “Dragon Tales; Let’s start a Band.” At 7, she had been in 6 Sesame Street Episodes. By 17, she had sung the National Anthem at venues such as The American Airline Arena, Greensboro Colosseum, Madison Square Garden, The Barclays Center, Citifield, and the Red Bulls Arena. And now at 19, she feels as though tonight is her biggest accomplishment yet.

Makyra Alexander (Marymount) Makyra, who recently graduated from Marymount Manhattan college, is thrilled to be a part of Broadway Rising Stars this season. At MMC, she received her BA in Theatre performance with a musical theatre minor. She would like to dedicate her performance to her family and friends who have always supported her.

Giliana “Gigi” Encarnacion (AMDA) Born and raised in the Dominican Republic. My mother had a dream, a passion to perform. She would always sing wherever we went. That is probably what drove me to music. I played violin at age 4 and continued until about age 10. One day the school choir caught my attention and I decided to join. Our director assigned me a solo. The day of the Christmas concert at a local mall in Syracuse, NY, was my debut to the world and the first time my mom saw me perform. I don’t think I would have ever pursued musical theater as a career if it wasn’t for the endless love and support I get from my family. Especially my brother Diego, who would stay up late with me to watch Disney movies, and broadway shows on Netflix. I dedicate this performance to him, and all of my family. Giliana Victoria Encarnacion

T O U R T HE HI S T O R I C T O W N HALL Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
