The Town Hall Presents
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing Hank Green with guest John Green Presented In Partnership With Barnes & Noble Dutton is thrilled to publish the debut adult novel of Hank Green, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, and The Town Hall and Barnes & Noble are pleased to present an exciting multimedia evening with Hank Green, as he introduces and discusses his book. You may know Hank Green as one half of the enormously popular Vlogbrothers YouTube channel, which he started with his brother John Green (bestselling author of Turtles All the Way Down and The Fault in Our Stars). Or you may know Hank from his years of teaching people cool things about science via his online educational video platforms Crash Course and SciShow (over 1.6 billion total views). You might also know him as co-founder of VidCon, the world’s largest conference for the online video community, recently acquired by Viacom. The Washington Post named Hank “one of America’s most popular science teachers,” The Chicago Tribune calls him “equal parts comedian and humanitarian,” and Mashable dubbed him “the voice of Team Internet.” In-between interviewing President Barack Obama, helping raise awareness and funds for his fans’ favorite charities through the Project for Awesome, and rocking out on stage before thousands of fans, Hank has also been quietly working on an exceptional novel. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (Dutton, on sale September 25, 2018) is a sweeping, cinematic tale about a young woman who becomes an overnight celebrity before realizing she’s part of something bigger, and stranger, than anyone could have possibly imagined. 3 | @TownHallNYC

ABOUT THE PROGRAM April May is a recent art school graduate working long hours at a Manhattan-based startup. Coming home from work one day at three a.m., April stumbles across something extraordinary: a giant sculpture that looks like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor. Delighted, April and her friend Andy film a video with it, dubbing the sculpture “Carl.” The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world— from Beijing to Buenos Aires—and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight. A thoroughly original debut, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing grapples with big themes, including how the social internet is changing fame, rhetoric, and radicalization; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring from the same dehumanization that follows a life in the public eye. Says Hank, “It’s a story I’ve wanted to tell for a long time that was seeded by a lot of my personal experiences, but it’s April’s story, and it’s been a pleasure watching her live her absolutely remarkable life.” Joining Hank Green is his brother and special guest, bestselling author John Green (The Fault in Our Stars, Turtles All the Way Down.)
Barnes & Noble will hold its third Book Club Night to discuss An Absolutely Remarkable Thing on October 24 at 7pm. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition includes a reader’s guide and an essay from Hank. Sign up to attend the discussion at your local bookstore, or online at BN.COM/BNBOOKCLUB. Our Cafés will be sampling food and beverages during the event, and each store will give away one signed copy of the book. Hope to see you there!

T O U R T HE H I S T O R I C T O W N HA L L Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
