A Letter fr om the presidents

Welcome to Broadway Rising Stars. We are delighted that all of you have joined us tonight, especially all of you who also subscribe to our Broadway By The YearÂŽ. This is the last Town Hall Presents show for our 2018/2019 season, what an amazing year we have had. When The League of Political Education opened Town Hall in 1921, they envisioned it as a meeting house for all New Yorkers. It was early on when they discovered the acoustics, designed to carry the human voice, worked equally well for musical performances. Town Hall became the venue where everyone wanted to have their debuts. Alice Tully has her own hall, but she had her debut here. Isaac Stern helped save Carnegie Hall, but he too had his debut here. We hope you will visit our Halls of History on the Mezzanine. You will get a glimpse of some of the luminaries who have graced our stage. But this show is not about reminiscing; it is for looking forward to seeing the trajectory of these amazing young performers. We congratulate them all, and wish them great success in their future careers, each one a Broadway Rising Star. On behalf of the Trustees of the Town Hall Foundation, thank you for joining us tonight.

About the Program The Town Hall proudly presents Broadway Rising Stars, a national showcase that introduces New York audiences to the next generation of up-andcoming talent. Chosen by a panel of discerning judges, the cast is selected from among the most outstanding new graduates from schools such as The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, Circle in the Square Theatre School, Marymount Manhattan College, The University of Miami, Webster College, Pace University, Wagner College, NYU’s Steinhardt and NYU Tisch New Studio on Broadway and other acclaimed institutions. The 2019 Rising Stars is spearheaded by Scott Siegel, creator/writer/director/host of Town Hall’s beloved Broadway by the Year® series. In the twelve previous years since Broadway Rising Stars first began, participants have scored top billing in Broadway shows as diverse as Wicked, Beautiful, Jekyll & Hyde, Hair, Les Miserables, The Color Purple, Charle and the Chocolate Factory, and Hamilton. This past season, one of our Rising Stars won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her performance in Oklahoma! Past Rising Stars have appeared on television in The Glee Project, Glee and A Christmas Carol. They have even starred in major motion pictures such as A Star is Born, and they have starred on the West End, including getting nominated for the prestigious Olivier Award. Our Rising Stars have also played in countless national tours both in the U.S. and abroad.

SCOTT SIEGEL Scott Siegel has created more than 400 major concerts that have been performed all over the world. He has written/produced/directed concerts for Michael Feinstein, created scores of nightclub acts that have played at major clubs around the globe, but is, perhaps, best known as the creator/writer/director/host of Town Hall’s signature series, Broadway by the Year®, which just concluded its 19th critically acclaimed season. TOUR THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
