THE C H IEF TA I N S

Six-time Grammy Award winners, The Chieftains have been recognized as the torchbearers and contemporary interpreters of traditional Irish music. S ACHA L EN SE MB L E : SONG OF LAHORE

Sachal Ensemble is a group of master musicians from Lahore, Pakistan who have recently found international acclaim after decades of being forced underground by dictators and religious extremists. In 2004, with government restrictions against music easing, businessman Izzat Majeed founded the Sachal Studios Orchestra. Oscar-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy crafted a beautiful feature length film about the group’s reemergence, called Song of Lahore. The Sachal Ensemble perform the traditional sounds of their home in Pakistan, while melding and weaving them into a larger, wider tapestry. This concert celebrates the unearthed musical tradition of Lahore, and the exciting new songs and collaborations of these special musicians. $45 / $50 / $55 / $65

ROMANIAN GYPSY LEGENDS

FANFA R E C IOCĀRL I A W I T H S P E C I A L G U E S T E U GE N E H Ü TZ

Fanfare Ciocārlia, one of the world's greatest Gypsy brass bands, brings their relentless energy and ingenuity to Town Hall for an exclusive and first-time collaboration with Eugene Hütz, front man for the wild and wildly popular band Gogol Bordello. Fanfare Ciocārlia are a 24-legged brass beast whose eastern funk groove has torn up halls and festivals across the planet. Having learnt their craft at the feet of their fathers and grandfathers, Fanfare's members proudly approach every concert as a challenge to both entertain audiences and keep the true spirit of Gypsy music alive. Eugene Hütz was just a scrawny 13-year-old punk rocker when his family fled Kiev in 1986 to escape fallout from the Chernobyl meltdown. But his new destiny really took shape after he relocated to New York City and merged punk and Gypsy sounds into the renowned and raucous band, Gogol Bordello. Produced in Collaboration with New York Gypsy Festival and Live Sound $25 / $35 / $45 / $75 VIP

TO U R T H E TO W N H A L L

Founded by Suffragists in 1921 in response to the passing of the 19th amendment, The Town Hall was established to educate people on the important issues of the day. Renowned architects McKim, Mead and White designed Town Hall to be “acoustically perfect.” Consequently, the “People’s Hall” became the place for debuts of all types of music and, almost a century later, it remains one of New York City's premiere performance spaces for music, dance, comedy and film.

Among the artists, performers and thinkers who have made Town Hall their home are: Margaret Sanger, who was famously arrested on stage for speaking about birth control; Bob Dylan, who gave his breakout performance in ’63; and Marian Anderson, who performed her first NYC recital, almost 15 years before her Met debut. Town Hall is proud to have launched the careers of new artists, while continuing to maintain its role as a place for free discussion. On Memorial Day in 1935, Town Hall began live radio broadcasts of its original series, America’s Town Meeting of the Air. Designed to promote the free exchange of ideas, Town Meeting was a live conversation among four speakers on a predetermined topic. The program began broadcasting on a single station with approximately 500,000 listeners, but within three years, it was carried by 78 stations and boasted 2.5 million listeners. The program ran for more than 20 years. For this accomplishment, Town Hall was selected for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. We invite you to learn more about this special place, its founding, architecture, and its role in the history & culture of New York, as well as the part it has played in the march for freedom of speech and human rights. Free guided tours are available on select mornings and are appropriate for visitors of all ages. Visit
