A L E T T ER F R O M T H E PRES I DE N T S
Welcome to Town Hall We are delighted you have joined us for Taylor Mac’s Holiday Sauce. We are excited to host Taylor Mac’s return to the Hall and are looking forward to a fun and amazing show. You might not know that The Town Hall was envisioned as a meeting house for all New Yorkers. A public forum for the free discussion of political and civic matters, where all sides would have equal privileges and where any law-abiding person could voice their opinion on the affairs of the day. When they opened the hall, the quickly realized that the acoustics they had designed for the human voice were perfect for music as well. This legacy lives on today. In 2021, Town Hall will celebrate our Centennial Anniversary. As a fitting tribute to our founders, our part in electrifying the cultural fabric of New York, and our future; The Town Hall Foundation is embarking on a campaign to envision the 21st Century Town Hall. We are taking this opportunity to gather a group of civic minded leaders and individuals to propel the Hall into its second century. If you are interested in helping us envision the 21st Century give us a call at (212) 997–1003. Your involvement will help make possible the continuation of Town Hall’s rich tradition of bringing the widest range of voices and performers from all over the world to audiences in New York and beyond.
With great appreciation,
Tom Wirtshafter Marvin Leffler President President Emeritus

T O UR T H E H I S T O R I C T O W N H A L L Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
