“Dr. John remains a formidable performer, and force of nature and invention ... a voice pitted with life and trouble but also loaded with the weathered assurance that there is still no place like his home.” - David Fricke, Rolling Stone
DR. JOHN
Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack, better known as the legendary Dr. John is a six-time Grammy Award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Known throughout the world as the embodiment of New Orleans’ musical legacy, Dr. John is a true icon in American culture. His colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex, Frankie Ford and Allen Toussaint. Dr. John headed west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing keyboards on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St. During that time he launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John the Nite Tripper. A legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-Gris, which introduced to the world his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots. In addition to his six Grammy wins, he has received six other Grammy nominations over the years. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and Blues Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2013 Dr. John was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tulane University alongside His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

“percussive in his attack, ostentatious with his technique… the picture of stubborn mischief — and, not coincidentally, of New Orleans pianism... billowing whole-tone glissandi; furrowed, Monkish hiccups; boppish two-handed octaves; flare-ups of funk and Chopin.” - The New York Times
HENRY BUTLER A ten-time Pinetop Perkins (formerly W. C. Handy) Best Blues Instrumentalist Award nominee, the music of pianist and singer Henry Butler, a Brooklyn resident since 2009, is a thick, spicy gumbo made of blues, jazz, Caribbean rhythms, classical music, pop and R&B. Blinded by glaucoma at birth, Butler has been playing the piano since he was six years old. By the age of twelve he was not only performing regularly but arranging and composing for New Orleans combos while attending elementary school by day. An exceptional technique and an “encyclopedic New Orleans flair” (The New York Times) allows Butler to move with ease from ragtime and gospel to swaggering second line rhythms. He is considered the premier exponent of the great New Orleans jazz and blues piano tradition. Butler’s most recent recording, 2014’s Vipers Drag, with trumpeter and arranger Steven Bernstein and The Hot 9, featured revamped classics by Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton. Reviewing the CD, Jazz Times proclaimed that Butler “personifies the Bayou tradition, past and present.”

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more. THE TOWN HALL FOUNDATION The Town Hall’s mission is to provide affordable world-class entertainment by new and established artists to a diverse audience; to inspire the youth of our community to appreciate and participate in the arts at The Town Hall and in schools through our Educational Outreach Program; and to preserve and enhance The Town Hall as a historic landmark venue for the enjoyment and cultural enrichment of generations to come.
