An electrifying performer with one of the most distinctive and expressive voices in popular music, strong, textured, sensual but also suggesting a touching vulnerability, Buika appears at The Town Hall as part of Winter Jazzfest on January 12, 2018. In this concert, the opening show of her Tiger Eye World Tour 2018, she will premiere her new EP, titled Para Mi (For Me), featuring a sound she defines as “a mix of flamenco, Afrobeat, reggae, and R&B.” It has earned Buika her first GRAMMY nomination in the Best World Music Album category. She has already won a Latin GRAMMY for El Ultimo Trago, in 2010; and was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY as producer for her work on Vivir Sin Miedo, (To Live Without Fear, 2015) for which she wrote nine of the 10 songs. For her Town Hall performance, Buika will be accompanied by Santiago Cañada, trombone; Ahmed ‘King’ Barroso, guitar; Josue ‘Ronkio’ Bass; Alexis ‘Pututi’ Arce, drums and Ramón “Porriña” Suárez; percussion, as well as a pianist to be announced. Opening for Buika will be NYC-based Chilean singer, guitarist and songwriter Camila Meza and the Nectar Orchestra. The passionate, flamenco underpinnings of “Dios de la Nada,” her striking version of Italian composer Enza Pagliara’s taranta “Pizzica de Torchiarolo,” or her soulful lament in the “Para Mi” underscore Buika’s ever-expanding range and global reach. Born Maria Concepción Balboa Buika of Equatorial Guinean parents immigrants in the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca, she burst onto the American scene in 2007 and has since won high praise from The New York Times, The Miami Herald, and The Wall Street Journal, as well as NPR, which included her in its gallery of “50 Great Voices” and featured her in a Tiny Desk Concert. Along the way she earned comparisons to singers such as Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas, and Cesaria Evora. Buika has been based in Miami since 2011 and is currently working on songs in English and Spanish for a new release later in 2018. As for those who want to define her by one particular music style, one great performance or one hit song, her response has been emphatic: “Give me everything,” she once said. “Give me copla, give me jazz, give me flamenco, give me bolero, give me the blues. At the end, each one of them will prove small because, at the end, every style carry its own limits - and I’m a free [musical] note and don’t have limits. Those styles are wonderful, but they are just worlds in a vast, vast universe.” Opening for Buika will be Camila Meza and The Nectar Orchestra. WBGO’S Simon Rentner calls her “one of the best-kept secrets in New York City... poised to step into a broader spotlight.” Born in Santiago, Chile, the singer/songwriter and guitarist blends modern jazz with Latin and Brazilian folk and pop. Her debut CD Traces was released in 2016.

Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
