ABOUT THE PROGRAM

CRY CRY CRY

Acclaimed singer-songwriters Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell and Dar Williams have reunited their celebrated folk-pop collaboration, Cry Cry Cry. The band made their debut in 1998 with a self-titled release followed by a nationwide tour the following year that included a soldout show at The Town Hall in New York. A mainstay on radio during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Cry Cry Cry returns to perform live at The Town Hall on Thursday, March 29 at 8pm, the trio’s first performance at the historic venue since their 1999 debut.

Twenty Years after their Debut as a Trio, Folk Singers Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell and Dar Williams Reunite for a Special Live Performance

On the release of the album, crafted to draw attention to lesser-known but equally deserving singersongwriters, The Washington Post raved, “Cry Cry Cry illustrates the advantages of taking the best works of contemporary folk musicians and fleshing them out with lovely, threepart harmonies.” And the Los Angeles Times wrote: “What makes Cry Cry Cry so compelling is the personal spin placed on the covered material.”

For the March 29th reunion show, Cry Cry Cry will perform selections from their eponymous debut, favorites from each of their individual discographies, and some choice new-to-the-band tunes. The members of Cry Cry Cry are enthusiastic about returning to the stage together. Shindell credits the Hudson River Clearwater Festival for pulling the group back to performing. “They floated the idea of a reunion and we thought, if not now, then when?” Kaplansky, Shindell and Williams are considered three of the finest singersongwriters of their generation. Each have flourishing successful solo careers and each have spoken about their belief in the power of songs -- and the power of singing in harmony. The timing seems particularly appropriate now to revisit the original project’s challenge. “We certainly did not expect to be reuniting at this unique moment in time, when people are coming together giving voice, partly through music, to what matters and to our collective values,” Kaplansky stated. Williams added, “When you have a musical bond, it’s like siblings. You are always returning to that unspoken language and understanding. I love Richard’s and Lucy’s voices more than ever.” In her review of the original Town Hall concert for The New York Times, Ann Powers lauded the artists’ ability to “transform life’s chaos into tales that can be absorbed and lessons than can be passed on.” Two decades on, there can only be more tales, and more lessons to be learned. T O U R THE HISTO R IC TO W N HA L L Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
