Whispers.

For the Mister

Hananel Mavity is a songbird with a velvet voice box, and an original songwriter with a longtime dream. By day, she serves as Artistic Director for the Red Hills Players theatre troupe, and as Youth Education Manager at Thomasville Center for the Arts.

For years, she has toted her guitar to venues all over the Red Hills region and beyond, singing folk and popular song covers, but all the while writing songs of her own in hopes of launching a career as a singersongwriter. The recording of her debut album ‘Maiden Voyage’ on Gatorbone Records was successfully funded by public donations through a Kickstarter campaign in November. The response was swift and overwhelming, the record dropped in December and Hananel couldn’t be happier. TT: When did you first start to think you’d like to sing professionally? HM: Probably when I heard the original London cast recording of Les Miserables on my mom’s personal cassette player…or Walkman? I also got very excited about singing when I heard some old, bootleg recordings we had of my parents’ friends singing and playing songs they had written when I was a baby. I was about 4 or 5 when I knew I wanted to sing…and teach, for that matter. TT: How would you describe your sound? HM: When I was 15 a girl said, “It’s like Bob Dylan and Jewel had a baby and it’s you!” about my music. Granted, that was 10 years ago when Jewel was in, but I’d say that not a lot has changed.

TT: How fast did you reach your financial goal, and how did you feel about the response? HM: I reached my Kickstarter goal 3 days early…27 days after it began. I was totally overwhelmed by the success of the campaign. I really didn’t know that so many people were interested in my original music. I’ve sung and performed all my life, but publishing my own words has been unknown terrain. I’m definitely encouraged to explore my songwriting further after the success of the campaign and the support from the label. TT: How do you feel about Thomasville as a kind of cradle for aspiring artists? HM: It’s all here. Thomasville has grown into a place where I invite my artist friends to come and stay a while. I want my generation to get to know Thomasville for what it is now, and what it has to offer artists, professionals and anyone who wants to be a part of a community. I’m proud to be in Thomasville. TT: How do you feel you’ve evolved as an artist since you first picked up an instrument? HM: I’ve learned to practice but still let the muse do its thing—and the fact that I love collaborating with other musicians. I know that my music lives more vibrantly

when virtuosic instrumentalists are contributing their gifts to the work. I feel like the instigator, then the real magic happens. TT: Where can we pick up a copy of ‘Maiden Voyage?’ HM: The album will be available soon on iTunes and cdbaby. Email playhananel@gmail. com to buy the album online or check with Thomasville Center for the Arts. TT: What’s next for you? HM: I’d like to share Maiden Voyage with anyone who wants to hear it before I cut my next record, and continue to pour myself into the theatre and arts community here in town. The Center for the Arts and Red Hills Players keep me busy and happy. Hananel has played Mockingbird Café and the Hop Yard in Tallahassee, the Monticello Opera House, various venues in Panama City and at Roberts Hall. Her next official appearance is at the Will McClean Festival in central Florida in March, followed by the Florida Folk Festival and Southern Music Rising in May.

My number one favorite forbidden treat in town is these circular pieces of heaven. I am not supposed to indulge in gluten, but sometimes I just can’t help myself. These cookies are THAT good. Get a couple for your honey and a couple for yourself, but don’t forget the glass of milk to wash them down.

Beignets {Liam’s}

Giving your loved one donuts might not be the sexiest present, but I guarantee if you bring your Valentine a box of original glazed donuts you’ll get some sugar. I have always been partial to the original glazed or the holes, but they have quite a variety. Get there early, and you’ll get the pick of the case.

Before I discovered my gluten sensitivity, I would go to Saturday brunch at Liam’s and eat these until I was downright stuffed. These puffs of dough pair perfectly with the Rude Awakening coffee drink…or with more beignets. Luckily, you can only get them at brunch on Saturday. You may not be able to get them on Valentine’s Day, but you can always hit Liam’s on the morning after.

Dear Thomasville,

Dear City Planners,

I want you to know that I love you. I know there have been times when I have forsaken your name, when I really wanted a five-minute trip to Target or a 10-minute walk to work. It’s not your fault that I can’t have these things. You more than make up for these deficits with your pure charm.

Your attempts to woo me have not gone unnoticed. You read my every thought. You anticipated the one thing I wanted more than anything else and my heart is a’flutter with giddiness. You constructed a turn lane to my heart...actually you constructed a right turn lane from Jackson Street, north on to Pinetree Blvd., in front of Big Lots.

Despite my many routes around town, my favorite includes the roads and neighborhoods surrounding MacIntyre Park. I love trudging up your incline on Glenwood, past the park where I can hear the clink of a frisbee hitting metal, until I reach the middle school which signals me to cross the street and head down Washington, then Montrose. You see, I love the Tudor house that faces Montrose, so I take every opportunity to walk past it. Sometimes, I will circle that block three times just to admire it. {Side Note: if you own this house, do not freak out. I am mostly harmless.} In fact, all of the houses in this neighborhood have beautiful manicured lawns. I love admiring them before I have to return home to my own untended, wooly yard. I even love it when my journey takes me past the middle school towards the cemetery. I love the comfort I get from Laurel Hill Cemetery. Honestly, there’s not much I don’t like. I love Moonspin on Crawford and Firefly on Broad. I love coffee from Grassroots and cheese from SGD. I love the drive-through at Henderson’s and the pickles at Fallin’s. I love the Post Office and courthouse. And, darn it, I even love Rose’s on Dawson and Chandler’s on Jackson. I cannot get enough of you, and I hope I never do. There’s one thing you’ll always get from me, Thomasville, and that’s nothing but love. {Until I really want to wander aimlessly around Target, but trust me, the moment will pass.} With Love, Denise

Love

Of all of the things about you that I love, my ability to walk and explore you is my favorite. I can easily get to your beautiful brick-lined streets with a brisk 20-minute walk. There I can grab a coffee, lunch or dinner. I’m not even dripping with sweat, if it’s not too hot outside. I don’t even have to worry about getting run over here. I have lived in many places that didn’t have nearly as many sidewalks as you. For that, I pledge my undying love.

Dear Thomasville, I want to nom daily through all your layers of culinary goodness. Thank you for your southern charm, your brick streets and that hand-lettered sign in front of the Big Oak.

Letters

Dearest Thomasville, You’re a big squishy hunk of my heart. As I rode home from an event a few months ago, it was chilly and the stars were out. Every house we passed shone warm with light from the inside. My friends houses. The streets I know by name. I can find my way in the dark, because this is home. My little routines, my favorite streets to ride my bike, the back door entrances that I sneak into downtown. Everything is where you left it, mostly, and there is great comfort in that. Yet, there is always the excitement of change. I don’t know how you do that, T-Vegas, but please don’t ever stop. And our readers, you faithful lot. You’ve seen us from our tender one-page form, all the way to broadsheet. Here you’ve been, loving this Thomasville life right along with us. You are what makes this venture fun, sweet and worth every printed word. It won’t be often in life that we’ll get to share something so consuming and identifying as the love of this town. We love it and it loves us back. We make it and it makes us back. Thank you, readers and Townies. Thank you for making Thomasville the kind of place where a quirky little newspaper {one big, bi-monthly love letter, really} can make a name for itself and showcase so many wonderful people, experiences and events. Everybody’s somebody in Thomasville and there are plenty of roses to go around.

With Much Love!

Love + hugs + lightning bugs,

I am now and forever yours...sigh... Your Can’t-keep-a-secret admirer, Alissa Shore

Dear Thomasville, You have brought nothing short of miracles to my life since I moved here. You have given me a great education. You have brought many good people into my life, and you have given me great employment opportunities. Thank you for the blueberry muffins at Grassroots that get me through the next work shift. And, thank you for all the people whom I have met over the years through my employment. Their kindness has really helped my quality of life. Love, Jon

Just a Love Note to One Small Town, I didn’t have anything when I arrived in Thomasville. The Salvation Army helped me pay for my medicines. The Rite Aid on Broad Street reduced the costs to help make it possible. The Salvation Army gave me credit in their store to clothe myself. Sister Douglas at the Rescue Mission Soup Kitchen fed me hot food during the week with enough calories to sustain me. On the weekend the Episcopal Church downtown took over my food needs. Goodwill helped me with job training and placement via their job fair at the library. In time, welfare provided food stamps. Southwest Georgia Primary Care saw to my body when I was ailing. Georgia Pines provided the mental health care I required. The public library fed and challenged my mind and provided me with internet access. And there is more. To be sure, there is more. A homeless shelter for men is yet needed, and, someday soon, I hope and pray there will be one in Thomasville again. For, when we fall, we fall fast, and we fall far, the way of return is slow and arduous. You must want to come back, you must care enough to come back in order to do so. And, if you do, then there will be love enough found in Thomasville to see you through. - Anonymous

Ten Thomasville Dates One of Thomasville’s finest single bachelors brings you the top 10 Thomasville dates—just in time for lovebird season.

1. Lake Cherokee is not just great for families, but it’s great for couples. And if you and your partner own a dog, bring them along! Best of all, getting into Lake Cherokee is free! 2. The Taste of Thomasville Food Tour takes place on Fridays and Saturdays. It features many restaurants on the tour, and provides an opportunity for couples to mingle and network. And it might help to make friends who will later share the price of that cheese board and five bottles of wine at Sweet Grass dairy. Which leads to: 3. Sweet Grass Dairy offers an amazing atmosphere if you are looking to kill some time before dinner reservations or plan a post-movie appetizer stop. They keep only the most knowledgeable staff, which makes the pickiest wine drinkers or cheese consumers assured that their needs will be met! 4. The Big Oak is underrated, in my opinion. You can picnic in the green field behind it, or have your photo taken with the sky-cam across the street. The City of

Thomasville has a page dedicated to the tree, where you can download those pictures! 5. If you are looking for a perfect date night and the best pizza, Moonspin Pizza is the place to be. Rob can describe every wine and beer they carry, which is helpful when building a pizza and pairing the right beverage. Plus, they can accommodate most dietary needs, and even offer a gluten free crust. 6. Grassroots Coffee is the low-key destination. Hang out and enjoy a warm {or chilled} beverage with your special someone. Plus, they have wifi, so if your someone is virtual, it’s kinda like a real date. 7. Most of us have done this, though some of us will deny it—but, racing over to Taco Bell and eating 5 burritos before your show starts at Gateway Cinemas is a date night in itself. Gateway Cinemas is not only the movie theatre monopoly in town, but you can’t beat settling those tacos in your stomach while being entertained. And there is nothing better than good, old fashioned salty, buttery

popcorn! 8. Riding down the muddy country roads is a recent discovery of mine, and driving along the back roads on a cool evening is very relaxing. Listen to good music, snack on a little something, and then, you can make your way back into town and head over to your reservations at: 9. Liam’s. The ultimate date night! And Saturday Brunch is one of my favorite things about them. There is nothing better than waking up and ordering one of their hot and delicious baskets of beignets. Wake your honey up and take them to Saturday Brunch at Liams! 10. Though too cold this time of year, the Thomasville Rose Garden is my favorite thing about Thomasville. Taking your partner to the Rose Garden is very necessary and you should make the date when the rose buds begin to bloom!

Road Trip

The Stylish House Love Your House this Valentine’s Day!

Pensacola for Lovers

For a city of its size and population, Pensacola has avoided amassing a downtown full of high-rises and condominiums, especially considering its proximity to the water. What you have along Palafox Street, downtown’s main drag, are a series of mostly one-story shops, galleries, theaters and restaurants that give you the feeling of a small town, but with the commercial diversity of a major metropolis. The area is especially great for couples’ strolls, intimate dates and gift buying. On Palafox, up near Wright Street, is where the Palafox Market begins on a three-block strip of park. Local vendors sell home- and handmade wares, art, foods and more every Saturday. Stroll hand in hand through the park, find a unique piece of handmade jewelry, snack on homemade Cajun kettle corn samples, or just cut through on your way into downtown. Where the market ends, the plethora of eats, shops and entertainment begins. If you’ve had breakfast, work your way to lunch by shopping the many clothing and jewelry stores and art galleries as you head south. In front of the Vinyl Theater, just past where the market ends, is a public piano, one of many provided through a partnership between the University of West Florida and the City of Pensacola. Brush up on your playing skills before your trip and surprise your love with a street-side sonata. One of the best things about hitting Pensacola in the off-season is that, while it may be chilly, every time you walk by the piano during the day it will likely be yours for the playing. At night, you’ll see strangers hammering away euphoniously for gathered crowds. Between Garden and Romana streets lies Blue Morning Gallery, an artists’ co-op that features local affordable art pieces, including prints, paintings, jewelry and more. Say hi to Morris Eaddy, owner and contributing artist, and his wife. They’ll welcome you warmly and leave you to browsing. The walls of the gallery feature every subject from the area’s flora and fauna to colorful abstract oil paintings. Most of what’s on the walls is priced under

$100. An original oil painting makes a special gift, because it’s one of a kind—your love might enjoy knowing they own something that can never be duplicated. Continue shopping your way down to Zaragoza Street and walk along the southern side of Plaza Ferdinand VII to the T.T. Wentworth, Jr., Florida State Museum. Take one of their historic 45-minute walking tours of Old Pensacola Village, where you’ll visit three 19th century houses of varying architectural styles and Old Christ Church, one of the oldest churches in Florida. The houses on the tour are fully decorated for their respective periods and feature folks in matching garb doing everything from cooking to churning butter to working in the herb gardens. If your significant other is a history buff, they’ll be impressed. Head back northward along the east side of Palafox and hit The Leisure Club, Pensacola’s “Best of” coffee house, featuring an eclectic, intimate interior, seriously delicious coffees, ice cream, wine and more. This time of year you might forgo the ice cream, but loosen your scarves and order a bottle of Malbec—they have a single brand available at the moment from Argentina that will warm you right up without burning you with sticker shock. If there’s one particular place which carries a consensus on where you must eat if you’re downtown, it’s at the Tin Cow, an out-of-this-world build-your-own burger joint that offers spiked milkshakes and over a hundred different canned beers—the owners claim there’s something inimitable about cracking a can. When I say the buildyour-own burger is out of this world, it’s because, should you choose, you can get a venison patty with dill Havarti, kimchi, and grape jelly. The topping offerings make combinations endless. You pick everything from your meat {Angus, Kobe, venison, bison, poultry or veggie}, to bread, to “Super Toppers” {which include a crab cake, country gravy and Spam}, to your final sauce topping. Order one of their famed spiked milkshakes with two straws, like the Pecan Pie, which features Crown Royal Maple, nutmeg, caramel syrup and brown sugar, with a

This Valentine’s Day let’s talk about loving our house! A dear friend once told me ‘you always have to fall a little bit in love with your best friend’. And, like your best friend, you have to fall in love with your house. Let’s face it, our house is our safe haven, our comfort zone. Or, if you are Edith Beale, ‘it’s the only place I truly feel like myself’. Whatever the case may be, let’s show our house some love this Valentine’s Day and then experience the warmth it brings to us and to our families and guests. A guest should always feel comfortable and relaxed when visiting your home. This should not only be reflected in the rooms of our home, but particularly in our guest powder room. Instead of bar soaps, try having an attractive soap dispenser on the wash counter. Even the smallest and most attractive of decorative bar soaps look messy and ‘used’ after their first exposure to water. A good looking dispenser not only looks clean and well kept but is refillable and cost effective. {Particularly when young people are involved.} Monogrammed paper towellettes add personalization to the space and can be put out in seconds for unexpected guests. Real, scented candles are always a hit. Or, try the battery powered flicker candles. They are safe, inexpensive and fun, and work well for parties. There is nothing worse than overhead lighting after a glass of wine at a cocktail or dinner party. Candlelight is so flattering. Remember, guests want to feel good about themselves and feel good about visiting your home.

even if it is just for ambiance. Fresh flowers are always an attractive mantle decoration. Hanging a nice piece of art or an antique mirror above the shelf will set the mantelpiece off and dress it up. You don’t have to stop with the mantle itself, fill the firebox with pinecones, ferns, oversize candles or magnolia branches. When using naturals, be open to spraying them funky colors. It is not permanent and a splash of color is always a good thing in any home. Particularly in the often colorless winter. Finally, you can never go wrong with red roses. Nothing symbolizes Valentine’s Day more. While colorful, they can also act as a neutral in pre-existing winter florals. On the mantle, on the table, in a bud vase in the powder room. They work everywhere. When the heads droop, tie them together and hang them upside down to dry. Then use them in a dried arrangement or wreath, or use the petals in homemade potpourri with your favorite scent. So, give your house some love this Valentine’s Day with these simple and inexpensive ways to show your house how you feel. This will spill over to the loved ones that fill its walls, and make your house a home. - Davey B. J. David Bray, Jr., is a Project Manager and Designer with Landford Thompson Interiors. graham cracker crust and pecan garnish. The best part about this place: They make burgers and shakes until 2:00 in the morning, 365 days a year. As night creeps up after dinner, stop at Old Hickory Whiskey Bar, which features floor to ceiling whiskeys, samples and staff with a ton of know-how. If you aren’t a fan of whiskey but your significant other is, this is the place to go try a few out and find one that will allow you to enjoy whiskey together—just tell one of the bartenders your tastes. They’ve got everything from smoky Scotches to biting brown Bourbons and an eclectic list of seasonal cocktails. Try a Peppermint Handshake—Fernet Branca Menta, Bourbon-infused coffee liqueur, a raw egg and a generous dash of cinnamon. It’s the nog of the Gods. As the wee hours descend, you’ll hear live music coming from all corners of downtown. Seville Quarter is a favorite latenight destination of many: a gaggle of seven bars and restaurants in one historic complex on Government Street. If you’d like to keep to the main drag, hit Hopjack’s to end the evening with Otis Redding covers, killer pizza and a selection of over 100 beers on draft—try a Swamp Head Midnight Oil Stout. The place is plenty big, but not terribly rowdy and the bartenders will serve you samples until you’ve found your pint of choice. Most importantly, there is plenty of room for dancing. - Jennifer W.

As many of you know, I just moved to Thomasville. I guess that makes me the proverbial “new kid on the block”. For this LOVE issue of The Townie, I want to share my Thomasville story…my love story.

She lives in Tifton, and always makes a trip to GRC to get one of these when she’s here. Any time I need to get her something for a surprise, this is my top pick. I am pretty sure she would wrestle a bear for this coffee cake.

Growing up in neighboring Brooks County, we came to the “big city” of Thomasville from time to time. Mainly for really unpleasant things like dental appointments, getting tonsils removed or visiting someone in the hospital. Needless to say, my feelings for Thomasville were not exactly positive. But isn’t that the beginning of many a love story?

Burnt Sugar Carolina Gold Rice Pudding {Blue Coop}

We met and I did not like him AT ALL.

Since I am really not supposed to have my favorite sweet treat in all of Thomasville due to dietary issues, I will occasionally get these instead. They are divine! They don’t have the traditional crumble like chocolate chip or sugar cookies, but they are sinfully sweet. I like to wash mine down with a cup of black coffee to tame the toothache.

In the late 90’s, I married a Thomasville guy and started spending a lot more time with his family here. Despite living in Atlanta and northwest Florida, we were able to make some great friends in Thomasville and really began to enjoy our visits. It seemed the town was changing and every time we came around, there was some cool new business opening, or a can’t-miss event going on.

After having our first baby, we moved back to Brooks County and began “staycationing” in Thomasville. We found it to be the perfect spot for a weekend away. We could stay with the in-laws at their home in the historic district, and walk to any of the new, amazing restaurants in downtown. Any time friends came to visit, I would bring them to Thomasville. Because most of them thought of this area as cotton fields and tractor pulls, they were always shocked at our hidden gem brimming with arts and culture. Thomasville, in my eyes, had become a destination and...I had become pretty smitten.

Let’s fast forward to this past October. I was approached about heading up the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce, an organization which has been working to help local business succeed for nearly 100 years. Talk about DREAM JOB! Despite my deep ties to Brooks County, I quickly accepted.

Participants will make pages that incorporate painting, drawing, collage, writing, and so much more. No art or writing experience is necessary. Tickets $75 includes supplies. 229-226-0588, www.thomasvillearts.org.

Since then, it’s been an absolute whirlwind! I am now proud to say that my daughters and I are citizens of the Rose City and could not be happier. This is a community with a perfect combination of progressive vision and small town values; those two things blend here to create an unmatched quality of life for families like mine. I think my 6 year old stated it best when she said, “Mama, I don’t like our new home…I LOVE our new home.”
