Health Checklist

This is the time of year to reflect on the year previous and think about what you might like to do differently. While New Year’s resolutions may be good for some, I don’t find them particularly effective or motivating. I’m better with goals and deadlines, and my best strategy is to name three goals and follow up. A visual reminder - like a check-off chart - is big for me. My chart this year includes finishing my novel, maintaining fitness goals and growing the Townie. I make weekly goals and color in the blocks and can see at a glance what I need to crack the whip on. A new year is a perfect time to press the reset button - on habits, goals and even relationships. And always follow the adage: Don’t complain, make change. Did you slide into lazy eating habits last year? Reset with a new cookbook or a new ingredient. Haven’t been walking the dogs as you should? Find a friend to join you or just find a favorite Thomasville vista that you visit each day. {One of mine is a hidden section of wooded creek off Myrtle.} Are you having conflict with a friend? Resolve to be the bigger person and figure out how to press Reset - no blame, just solutions. Be sure to take at least thirty minutes to look at where you’ve been and think strategically about where you’d like to be - in six months, a year, and five years. These goals can and should change, but it’s very hard to arrive at a chosen spot without a map. Don’t blindly stumble along - reset and revive!

{MAKE YOUR RESOLUTION INCLUDE BETTER HEALTH HABITS} DENTAL CHECKUP Dental Health is more important than you realize. A visit to the dentist can help you detect early mouth problems like cavities,

, A strong, positive self-image is the best possible preparation for success. —Dr. Joyce Brothers I think Dr. Brothers offers great advice. We all love feeling strong and successful, beautiful and young. It is human nature…“do your best!” If only it were as easy as instant grits! Do you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and say, “I look pretty good for 40 something!”, or do you try to not even glance in the mirror? Are you hard on yourself, discrediting your worth based on that new little laugh line? “Waste of time and energy!” as my mother would say. We all have a secret self-image of ourselves. Mine is of a young, slender, athletic woman. The truth is, I am not so young anymore, not exactly trim and somewhat athletic. How can I possibly have such a good self image when it is not the truth? It is because I keep striving for happiness. I tell myself everything is going to be “just fine.” Scarlett would approve. So what if I am not the slim Jackie Kennedy look-alike? I can darn sure ride horses and fox hunt like she could. I can put an outfit together that looks classic and elegant, like she could, but for thousands less. I can whip up a mess of sweet potato biscuits, and I can rock some glitter shadow. I don’t think Jackie cooked, and she probably thought glitter looked cheap. So, what is the secret to having a good self-image? I believe it is keeping yourself busy and doing things that make you feel good inside. What does that mean to most people? Going shopping, or going for a walk? Going shopping will drain your pocketbook, but a walk through the country will fill up your soul. Choose the things that enrich your life...like making a sad friend a cake or volunteering at the pet shelter. Avoid the things that make you feel empty, like competitive friendships, crabby family members or cleaning the silver. Be grateful! I am grateful for my family, who is FIRMLY planted in the Lone Star state. Those boots aren’t made for walkin’. I love them for their character, tenacity and spirit. I have a photo of my pioneer great-grandfather hanging in my living room to remind me of his hard work and his strong will, which I suspect was passed directly down to me. I am also so grateful for this Thomasville life. Grateful for my incredible friends, young and old, who offer a smile at the grocery or a laugh at Sweet Grass on a Thursday night. I treasure my relationships, and I work at them. Have you forgotten an old friend this past year? Pick up the phone. Send some flowers, even if they are blue carnations. I am grateful for my health...I can walk, I have my eyesight and I can still swing a leg up on my big red horse...with the help of a step stool, of course. Put on your shoes and stroll down your street, dust off your bike and feel the wind on your face. I am grateful for my home and the menagerie of animals that resides here. My cozy cottage is located a tiny block away from my best friend of 20 years, and a short stroll away from a catfish dinner. I call my neighbors “friends,” and they call me over for Prosecco.

The Paleo Diet. Real Food. Real Good.

The Paleo Diet, also popularly referred to as the caveman diet, is based upon eating wholesome, contemporary foods from the food groups our hunter-gatherer ancestors would have thrived on during the Paleolithic era. Centered on commonly available modern foods, the “contemporary” Paleolithic diet consists mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, fungi, roots, and nuts, and EXCLUDES grains, legumes, dairy products, potatoes, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oils. Thomasville resident Olivia Adams started her adventures with the Paleo Diet about two months ago, and it has been a great experience and learning opportunity for her. Her business is smartly named LivPaleo. Since she was a child, Olivia has always enjoyed cooking, and when her older brother started doing CrossFit he introduced her to the world of the Paleo. Her goal is “to help people eat real food and have a healthy and happier life.” Her menus change weekly, some of her favorite creations include BBQ pork fried rice, paprika chicken with roasted broccoli and carrots, turkey quiche, spaghetti and meatballs, scotch eggs, fresh fish with roasted Brussels sprouts and much more.

The Townie is always up for trying new things, and so we decided to try out LivPaleo meals for ourselves this week. We signed up for five dinners. On Monday, Olivia notified me via e-mail that our meals were ready for pick-up at the UPS Store, and I went right over to pick them up. The meals were packaged in simple reusable containers with clear lids, and looked very appetizing. Each one was clearly marked with the name of the entreé, and which day it was to be eaten. Monday was Moroccan Meatballs with a cauliflower rice and sauteéd spinach. The portions were generous and tasted delicious. Tuesday was Grilled Balsamic Rosemary Chicken with roasted asparagus, and it had lots of flavor and was filling. Wednesday was Baked Tilapia with tomato and cucumber relish. The fish was wonderful, flaky and perfectly cooked. Thursday we will have Pad Thai, and Friday is a Sweet Potato Cottage Pie with venison. We will keep you posted, but I already suspect they are going to be fabulous! Olivia specializes in the Paleo Diet meals, but she can also create healthful non-Paleo meals by request. The weekly Paleo meal program consists of 9 meals, 4 lunches and 5 dinners. Cost is $110 and $100 for cross fit members. TO ORDER YOUR PALEO MEALS: livpaleo@gmail.com

And Dr. Vinson at Vinson Chiropractic helped me with neck and shoulder pain - no drugs, no needles, nothing scary! WHERE DID ALL THESE FRIENDS COME FROM? I’ll be fine and dandy...Lord it’s like a hard candy christmas... I'm barely getting through tomorrow, But still I wont let sorrow bring me way down... —Dolly Parton

Last year, just days before Christmas, I had a fall from my horse. Not a “dust-yourself-off-and-get-back-on” fall...more of a splat. Apparently a splat that was heard ‘round the world. By the time I was driven to the hospital by my special partnerin-crime April, people were showing up. When you have a broken limb, it can be a real downer. Talk of surgery and missed ski trips were swirling around me in my morphine haze. All I could really think about was my riding boots and how they were going to make it home. As if out of a bizarre dream, in walks one of my more colorful and enthusiastic friends, Paul. How in the heck did he already hear about this? He was Johnny On The Spot! It sure was nice to see the smiling face and hear the laugh of another friend. And they just kept coming! I stayed in the hospital for four days. The first day I was there, fifteen friends came to see me. It felt like a cocktail party. Well, at least for me it did...I was on the morphine drip. They brought well-wishes, flowers, pajamas and favorite foods. They smiled, laughed, and made me happy. When I left the hospital, the friends followed. With food, smiles, special coffees, and love. It sounds cliché, but you realize just how important forming and nurturing your friendships are when you face bad times. So in good times, don’t take your friends for granted. Be there for them, even if you “don’t have time.” Send a card when they “don’t want to talk about it.” At least they will know that you will be there, in good times and in bad.
