10/27 - DT Trick or Treat!

Bring your goblins, ghouls, witches and wizards from 3-5 PM for trick or treating! Shops are opening their doors and dishing up treats for your little costumed cuties.

SPEND A HALF DAY IN THE VILLE...

{A new series! Look for a themed itinerary in each issue.}

Artsy/Eclectic Start at Wiregrass Gallery on North Broad Street for loads of local art and crafts - the shop is always tended by a resident artist and the offerings and price range are vast.

Susan T. is nearly as quirky as I am, and one of the most stylish people I know! She’s a transplant from NC, but a Townie through and through!

decor, bags, baskets, etc. Round the corner onto Jackson St. for lunch at Liam’s, they’ve got a broad midday menu with standard lunch prices - I usually have the Mediterranean Plate in the summer and the artisan mac-n-cheese in the winter. Order wine and pretend you’re in France!

Yum!

2 - Deserted island, one book: The Thomasville Townie! Not a book, but who wants to be on a deserted island when there’s so much going on here? 3 - Blue Cheese or Ranch?

Head south on Broad and visit the Bookshelf, making

sure to see the gallery upstairs - they have a seasonal

exhibit from mostly local artists; past exhibits include blown glass, collage, photography. Continue south down to Forever Retro for a spectacular collection of vintage and mid-century goods - go-go boots, oil paintings, furniture and period costume jewelry.

Amazon? I want to explore the Amazon and then relax on the Nile

5 - Hydrangeas or roses? Hydrangeas every time

WE SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES! WHAT’S A DOWNTOWNIE?

A Townie who loves downtown, of course.

October is a Downtownie kind of month. First Friday has fun for all, but don’t stay up too late, you’ll want to be first on the scene for the sidewalk sale on Saturday, October 6th. Come get all the Downtown deals and steals while they last! The fun continues October 13th for the Fall Fest off Broad down behind Relics at Building 209. Come join other Downtownies for face painting, apples, square dancing and lots of Fall Fun!

FROM THE BOOKSHELF & GALLERY Gretchen Rubin is back... after her NYT bestseller The Happiness Project with another look at happiness and how to find it. Rubin reminds herself (and readers) to read the manual, kiss her husband more, go on Wednesday adventures with her daughter. She writes about protecting her children’s free time, embracing good smells, trying acupuncture. In doing so, her life—she claims—becomes happier. Critics might argue Rubin has said it all in her previous book, but Happier at Home remains fresh. Sure, the concept’s a little redundant, but who doesn’t need a refresher course on being—and staying—happy? COME AND SIT A SPELL AT 126 SOUTH BROAD STREET.

Brews News in The Ville If you enjoy craft beer, you should be aware that there’s a Thomasville Beer Club - on Facebook and in real life. Graciously hosted the first Tuesday of every month by Liam’s, the club members bring a bottle to share and usually have a monthly theme. This month’s meeting focused on pumpkin and Octoberfest beers. Beers are sampled and rated, and sometimes home brews make an appearance. All are welcome, whether you love craft beer or are merely curious. There’s also an Advanced Beer Club meeting if you’d like to dig a little deeper! In other beer news, Liam’s and Sweet Grass are both bringing the awesome. Liam’s has announced a 5-course Dogfish Dinner for January 15th! Dogfish Head will be here for the event, and tickets are $125, including an expertly paired meal and a hand-picked selection of Dogfish Head beers not normally available - this is a must-go event for beer nerds. There’s a good chance the tickets will sell out, so go ahead and reserve your spot - I think I should get one ticket as a Merry Christmas to Mister Townie! SGD has scheduled more of their popular beer and cheese pairing classes, and they’ve just announced an entire weekend of events with Bell’s Brewery! Saturday, Nov. 10th will be an all day Bell’s 'Tap Takeover featuring seasonal + special release beers stuff we don’t normally see in SoGa. Specialty Brewer Zeke Bogan will be on site, so chat him up and ask those burning beer-related questions! On Sunday evening the Cheese Shop will host a 4-course Farm To Table Brewer’s Dinner - as with all SGD events, these tickets are going to fly! We are amazingly lucky to have Liam’s and SGD catering to beer enthusiasts, just further proof that The Ville is no ordinary place… and that our local business owners are dedicated to the interests of their customers.

Brooks County Skillet Festival Just down the road, Quitman, GA, boasts fine homes, a quaint downtown and… the Skillet Festival! This is the second year of the annual event, and if last year is any indication, it's well worth the drive. The one-day festival packs a punch with a craft and food fair, Cast Iron Chef competition, a Mutt Show for your prize pup, a Skillet Toss and the Skillet Stomp - featuring live music from the famed Kinchafoonee Cowboys. Celebrity guest and cookbook author Gena Knox will be conducting a cooking demonstration and signing books. Plus, you can get my favorite pickles in the world from Phickles Pickles! The Skillet Fest claims to be “part farmers market, part antique show, part craft fair, and all fun” and I'm inclined to believe them! October 20th on the courthouse square in downtown Quitman.

Full Report Shotgun Supper Club

Sco

For those of you who sadly weren’t able to make it to the first shotgun supper club, here’s the low down! The SSC will feature a seasonal menu and surprise venue each time - this one was held out at Willow Oak under a rustic tin roof shed. Nan of Firefly styled a loooong farm table with red bandana napkins and an assortment of candles. The menu was curated and prepared by Carol W., starting with oysters expertly shucked and served with a kicky sauce. Each guest brought their own choice of wines for the evening and the bottles were tagged as people arrived. There was time to mingle and chat with friends and meet new ones - the best part about gatherings like these! I met some new Townies, and finally met a pen-pal Townie face to face - Kristin M.! The rain moved in and played us a symphony on the tin roof right before we sat down to a pear and blue cheese salad featuring SGD’s Asher Blue. Then came the biggest ribeye I’ve EVER seen, from White Oak Pastures. It had the most mouthwatering smokey aroma and was served with a delicately flavored blend of local vegetables. Thank goodness, and Nan, for doggie boxes! There was even herbed butter for the bread, and some of it *may* have come home in my doggie box… By the end of the nite we were stuffed full of local fare and cheery with good conversation. I looked from my end of the table down the long line of candlelit faces and thought to myself how much I LOVE THIS THOMASVILLE LIFE. Thanks to Nan + Carol for dreaming up the SSC, and a huge thanks to Astro Pest Control for sending me to investigate the first installment! The Club will meet each season, so keep an eye out for the next announcement, and Like Firefly on FB to stay in the know.
