Wine Thirty Hits Delarber Downtown This Saturday. The Center for the Arts has been mixing wine + art for some time now with their popular Whet Your Palette series. But they took this intersection of creativity + fun to a new level with their latest project. They enlisted members of their Artist Collective to create work for two wines from Georgia’s Habersham winery, located in Nacoochee Village, just south of Helen. And you can join in the fun! I asked Darlene M., leader of the Artist Collective, how the project came about. “I must confess whenever someone gives me a small idea, or even sends an image through an email that inspires me, I am often guilty of creating an entire project around it.” The call for art received 55 entries with 35 artists participating. They were surprised at the level of participation, because the Collective is relatively new. Two winners have been selected to have his or her image placed on the Habersham Signet and Habersham Scarlett wine labels. These wine labels will be unveiled at the opening reception on April 20th from 5:30 – 7:30 at Delarber Downtown. All submitted artwork will be on display!
“There were 6 jurors who tagged their favorite pieces… all in the business of selling wine,” says Darlene. “Three of the jurors chose the same two winners out of 55 pieces. There was no doubt.” The work is also for sale, with all pieces being priced less than $500. After May 1, twenty-five of the pieces will move to Sweet Grass Dairy until July 15. Habersham Winery was founded in 1983 and is one of the state’s oldest and largest wineries. Habersham Wines have been awarded over 150 medals in national and international competitions. “They have been amazing to work with,” says Darlene. “And we really like the wine.”

Hello, Apollo-Retro! Robert Kelly and Patti Smith are not your ordinary shopkeepers.
Their passion for midcentury furniture and vinyl records is international —and perhaps intergalactic. Originally from London, Robert previously owned a record store in Kent, England. On a trip to the UK, Patti Smith met Robert at his vinyl record store and they have been working together ever since! Because Patti already had established roots in Dixie, Georgia, they both decided Thomasville would be a great location to open shop. Their store features two shops in one: Forever Retro, a mid-century store, and Apollo Records, the vinyl record store. They happily opened in November 2011. Their mission is to give Thomasville something it has never seen before. They are the only dedicated midcentury store for hundreds of miles around. Robert explained to me that the best record you’ll ever hear is the one you have yet to hear. Apollo Records features a variety of different types of artists, from early century jazz to very rare collectibles {like the Beatles!}.Robert also told me an incredible truth, something almost lost to my generation. He explained that “Time has proved vinyl is the best way to listen. The way it is recorded is exactly how it was done in the studio... no modifications.”
I imagine it is almost the same as seeing a band live! Forever Retro is the only mid-century store between here and Atlanta. Using Royal Tunbridge Wells, UK, as her home base, Patti began networking and buying for high end shops around London and Paris prior to relocating to Thomasville. Forever Retro carries world renowned designers such as: Adrian Pearsall, Milo Baughman, Heywood Wakefield, Selig and Charles and Ray Eames. They carry a huge variety of barware from many eras, as well as an assortment of household furniture. They maintain relationships with international buyers, as well as local customers. Patti’s dream of owning an internationally renowned business has become a huge success. Patti Smith and Robert Kelly are both humble and very helpful shop owners. If you have yet to stop by, they are located at 318 South Broad Street. See them Saturday, April 20th for Record Store Day, their biggest event of the year! — Jon

SGD’s Crazy-Good Crackers One of Sweet Grass Dairy’s cheesemakers, Ariel Little, had a hankerin’ for a hunk-o cheesy cracker… and these tasty tidbits were born! She used Black Swan, which is one of their seasonal cheeses. If it’s off-season for Swan, try their Tomme, or one of the cheddars they keep in stock.
INGREDIENTS: - 8 oz extra-sharp cheese, coarsely shredded - ½ stick unsalted butter, room temperature - 1 tsp kosher salt - 1 cup flour - 2 T water, iced
DIRECTIONS: Cream the cheese, butter, and salt in stand mixer until combined. Add the flour until it looks crumbly.
Then, slowly add the water until the dough forms a ball. It may take 15 seconds or so for the dough to make a ball after you add the water so be careful not to add much more. Pat the dough into a disk and refrigerate for 1 hour. Then, roll the dough to 1/8 of an inch. Preheat the oven to 375F. Cut the dough into 1” squares with a pastry wheel or pizza cutter. Poke a hole in the center with a chopstick and bake for 12 minutes.

It’s one of my all-time favorite stories, and I can’t wait to see how young people relate to work that might be considered old or outdated. There were no cell phones and no texting Mr. Darcy! P+P was written in 1813 and continues to make book lists for Most Loved stories. You’ll be on the edge of your seat wondering whether independent and sassy Elizabeth and the mysterious and dashing Mr. Darcy will make a match.
