SHAE TAYLOR

Monday marked the opening of The Ville’s newest addition - Yoburst Frozen Yogurt! The Townie crew {Mr. Townie, writers Jon + Rebekah, and me} had a preopening taste of the goodness, so here’s the scoop.

more interested in the treat part than the healthy part, they’ve got that covered, too. Reese’s Pieces {a personal fave}, cookie dough, mini Nutter Butters - you name it, they’ve got it.

Owners Kevin and Courtney have always loved froyo, and Courtney thought it would be great to bring it to Thomasville, but Kevin wasn’t so sure.

Plus, because they’re local and not a franchise, they don’t work for Corporate - they work for themselves and their customers. “If you have a favorite flavor, let us know!” says Courtney. They are working on getting Taro, which is very popular, and they are interested to know what their customers would like to see. And don’t forget to grab a frequent buyer card while you’re there!

“Two years later, Kevin said we should open a yogurt shop,” says Courtney. She was surprised at the turnaround, but with both of them on the same page, they jumped in with both feet. They traveled all over Georgia, Alabama and Florida trying different shops and analyzing their interior spaces. After much research and with the support of their families, they committed to the space they now occupy on East Pinetree, behind Big Lots and across from Burger King. They’re big on the healthful aspects of yogurt, so they have lowfat, no fat and no added sugar flavors, as well as an array of fresh fruit toppings. Of course, if you’re

Sprout! What I Love This Week

The Saturday Morning Market may be no more - but there are still local veggies to be had. Enter Will Wise, a locally beloved yoga instructor, massage therapist and Townie chum. He’s been an organic farmer for years, but now we can all enjoy his bounty. He has a hip little veggie cart and will be set up at the Toscoga parking lot on Saturdays from 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM. Currently, he has veggie and herb plants as well as fresh brown eggs, but as soon as his produce is ready, he’ll have everything from squash to tomatoes to eggplants. He even has naturally pest inhibiting plants for sale!

Calling All Princesses

Boone Felts is Bringing Integrity Back

South Georgia Ballet Presents Sleeping Beauty Complete with a handsome Prince, a beautiful Princess and a magical kiss, “Sleeping Beauty” is a breathtakingly lavish ballet which South Georgia Ballet company dancers, along with students from The South Georgia Ballet Conservatory {formerly known as South Georgia Performing Arts} will perform on May 31 and June 1 at the Cairo High School Auditorium. The performance celebrates the organization’s 15th anniversary season and is directed by Alison Bundrick, Artistic Director. “Encore” will also be performed and is a presentation of favorite tap and jazz dances from previous performances. “Sleeping Beauty” is a ballet written by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and was first performed in 1890 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Princess Aurora is played by Megan Law, a graduating senior at Brookwood School. Krista Robinson, graduating senior at Cairo High School, portrays the Canary Gift Fairy and Diamond. Both Miss Law and Miss Robinson have been dancing with Ms. Bundrick at South Georgia Ballet since its inception in 1998. Also featured are Maria Dunbar, a sophomore at Thomasville’s Scholar’s Academy as the evil Carbosse and Rachel Willis, a junior at The Scholar’s Academy as The Lilac Fairy. South Georgia Ballet’s rendition of “Sleeping Beauty” features beautiful dancers, dazzling costumes and stunning backdrops. Your little princesses will not be disappointed! Performances will be held at the Cairo High School Auditorium on Friday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday June 1, at 7:00 p.m. A modified performance which includes SGBC’s youngest dancers will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m. For tickets or more information, please visit www.southgeorgiaballet.org or call 229-228-9420. Tickets range from $8-$15 and may also be purchased at the SGB office located in the Thomasville Center for the Arts, Room 307 or by mailing a reservation and payment to South Georgia Ballet, P.O. While working at Moonspin, I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of people. One customer who always impressed me was Boone Felts. Boone worked at Moonspin before my time, closer to their beginning. He was well respected by the staff, but soon moved on to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. He returned to Thomasville a year later when his father experienced a few medical hiccups. Since then, BWB Auto Sales on North Blvd. has grown into an incredibly successful used car dealership. BWB was opened 8 years ago by Boone’s father, and Boone has been managing operations since his return to Thomasville. Boone has also opened up a mechanic shop, Boone’s Auto Repair, on Madison, that has the most affordable oil changes in town {$22.00!}. At BWB, they have earned the reputation of the most honest and helpful used car dealership in town. Their goal is to help you have your vehicle paid off within 2 years, and their average payment is about $250/month. If you make your payments on time and cannot afford mechanic repair on your vehicle if something happens later down the road, they will fix your car and will work out payment arrangements.

When asking Boone about some of the challenges he faces, he made a statement that helped me realize that life is not always easy for business owners. “I am not entitled to a paycheck every week just because I own a business. The good and bad thing about running a business is the decisions I have to make that can profit me, or hurt me.” One thing that really impressed me was that, typically, they sell their vehicles under the Kelley Blue Book value. They really do their best to give you the best deal in town! When I asked Boone about his favorite thing about Thomasville, he told me: “People really treat you well in Thomasville. People treat each other like family, and everyone’s parents are like your parents”. His family values can truly be witnessed at BWB, and until this interview I did not have much trust in car salesmen! Boone has gone from topping pizzas to running his own successful businesses. If you are looking for an honest car salesman, need to rent a U-Haul or need an oil change, give Boone Felts at a call at BWB Auto Sales at (229) 226-0404, or visit him at 608 North Blvd. - Jon T.

Scoop: Sweet Grass Dairy’s New Venture From the Horse’s... err Cow’s... Mouth

Road Trip

They have a good lunch and nite bites menu at the current Cheese Shop, but they wanted to take it a step further. Before starting the dairy, co-owner Jeremy Little was on track to attend culinary school and he and wife Jessica are still passionate about food. If you’ve attended one of their perpetually sold out tasting events, you know just how passionate. They have a love of local ingredients and a taste for far-flung gourmet offerings; they blend the two in a way that gives their dishes both roots and wings. I asked if the restaurant would be fine dining - “It will definitely be family-friendly,” says Jeremy, “but we’ll always offer high quality seasonal foods. As parents of four boys, we completely understand the importance of a restaurant that can take care of kids while also remembering not to short change Mom and Dad.” They want to approach the menu in a way that makes it possible for families to dine out but that allows parents to have something more elevated. “It’s important to us that no matter if you’re coming in after a hard day of work or if you’re out for a nice dinner date - we want to make your experience memorable.” {I heard from an unnamed source who’s seen the menu that it’s looking great.} The Grassroots location will undergo a full renovation and become home to full service dining along with bar space in the front for the wine + cheese set. {So, take heart! Your weekly wine meetup isn’t going to be homeless.} “It’s so flattering that people love our current space

so much,” says Jessica. “That feel was developed by our friend and great designer, Jackie Ellis Johnson {of OSO Artworks}. So, since the beginning of this project we’ve been working with her to make sure that all of those same elements that people enjoy make their way into the restaurant.” Tastings will happen after hours at the current location, which will be transformed into a bottle and cheese shop in the front while housing their substantial mail-order business in the back. They’re hoping to offer more tastings at various price points, as well as trunk shows, of a sort, for Southern gourmet food items. They are anticipating a Fall opening for the restaurant and are hoping to have minimal downtime for the current location. To keep up with their progress and to get the first crack at tasting and cheese classes, be sure to sign up for their newsletter at http://sweetgrassdairy. com/contact. SGD is our little hometown cheese shop and I often forget how big-time they are in the food world. They recently received The Specialty Food Association’s esteemed Outstanding Retailer Of The Year award. This is a national award, and past winners include Zingermans, The Fresh Market, Pastoral Artisan Cheese and Central Market. Reminds me just how lucky we are to be able to stroll in and order cheese whenever we like. I’ll have a Green Hill, please! - Bunny B.

TCA + SCAD = An Artistic Experience

SCAD is bringing that extra creative “edge” to our town,

a place where the edgy, innovative, intense and passionate live.

As you walk through the doors, hearing that familiar metallic squeak from the hinges, the accustomed creaks up the steps, are you flooded with childhood nostalgia? I am. Every time. The Center of the Arts has come a long, fruitful way from the days when it was East Side School. One thing that has not changed; the Center has always been a place of education, growth and community betterment. If you are like so many Thomasville natives, including myself, you grew up taking theater classes, art classes, dance classes, or some form of the beaux-arts at Thomasville’s Center for the Arts, formerly named The Thomasville Cultural Center. A center for the arts is exactly what they have provided and continue to provide to the one-of-a-kind community of Thomasville, GA. Recently, the Center has been on a mission to enhance the creative culture and worth of Thomasville and to get us on the map for being one of those cool/creative/artsy communities, but, of course, in our own little Thomasville way. Darlene Mathis heads the Adult Programming at the Center and she has many things up her sleeve - the

most notable of which is the SCAD Summer Intensive Workshops. “If we want Thomasville to be a creative town we need to be rubbing elbows with the creative,” she says. Bringing SCAD students and instructors to Thomasville is such a wonderfully bold push for the Center, and I think they mean business. Here’s the dish: SCAD is bringing that extra creative “edge” to our town, a place where the edgy, innovative, intense and passionate live. Do I have your attention? For 3 days this summer, you will have the remarkable opportunity to really dig deep into your creative side. Guided by a crew of amazing SCAD instructors, you will be taught printmaking, photography or writing. Individually, you will be developing an urban self-portrait of Thomasville, meaning you will learn to capture your distinct views of our town, not just the landmarks or the businesses. What makes Thomasville so fascinating to locals and visitors alike? What makes Thomasville, well, Thomasville? Are you racking your brain yet? No matter where you are in your creative ventures, the Center and SCAD welcome

you to take this course starting Friday, June 14, through Sunday, June 16, at Studio 209. All digital cameras are acceptable and personal laptops or tablets will be needed. Can’t commit to the whole weekend? SCAD instructors will be teaching three 3-hour workshops: Storytelling in the Digital Age, Documentary Photography and Introduction to Printmaking during that same weekend. There are two ways to reserve a spot in these courses: go to the Thomasville Center for the Arts website and register or pick up the phone and call Darlene Mathis:229.226.0588 ext 106. Space is limited to 30 people, I encourage you to register a.s.a.p. for this opportunity to create and explore. See you there! - Sarah M.

Florida’s Forgotten Coast:

Enhake Quartet {Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano} Free, donation accepted Thomasville First United Methodist Church

If you’ve ever made the trek to Saint George Island or Apalachicola, you’ve likely passed through Eastpoint, a sleepy fishing town of about 2,500. If you’re headed elsewhere but plan to buy and cook your own local seafood, or you want a half-bushel of oysters for the boat or campsite, Lynn’s Quality Oysters in Eastpoint is where to stock your cooler. The smoked fish dip and crab cakes are local favorites, and Lynn’s offers fresh, locally caught grouper, live blue crabs, Apalachicola oysters, and shrimp. You may want to stock your cooler on the way home, too!

Eastpoint + Environs Amid swirling rumors and high hopes, I met with SGD’s Mat Willey for the official word on their new venture: a restaurant.

Dance Card.

If you plan to give your fishing or boating license a run for its money, and seek more reasonably priced lodgings than on the island or in Apalach, stay at the Sportsman’s Lodge on East Bay. These “Old Florida” accommodations offer spectacular views of the sunset and a public boat ramp next door provides easy access to the many nearby rivers - and some of Florida’s best fishing. Haul your boat or kayak north on scenic Highway 65 and put in at Bloody Bluff to explore Owl Creek, a swamp habitat of cypress-lined black water canals; the creek provides scenery that would be almost haunting if not for the little turtles you’ll see every so often, basking on fallen cypress trunks. The stillness of Owl Creek provides a perfect setting for tearing through its deep canals on a tube or wakeboard. The creek ends at the Apalachicola River, so if you’re feeling adventurous, forgo hauling your boat and take the lengthy trip upriver to where Owl Creek begins. —Jennifer W.

Landmarks is the community’s historic preservation organization, but what does the word “historic” mean? In the United States, it means a place or object more than 50 years old that has both integrity – retaining characteristics from a certain period in history - and significance – in details, craftsmanship or association with important people or events. Everything that is old isn’t historic and there are some things we may not consider old that are historic. We preserve historic places and objects because they are tangible evidence of the history of our community. These places matter.
