Hidden when Sought tudents are the main stakeholders of any educational institution including Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST). They are also the prime pride to whom the university’s excellence is graded. Students are not just simply students by name, they are not just stakeholders, but they are pride of the university they are part of.

Student participation is indeed a big problem in this university. Take for instance the University Intramurals that happened last semester, only the events at night are being watched and participated by the students. The Search for Mr. and Miss MUST in Limketkai Atrium could be the only one which attracted most students. Even the sports activities, considered as the focus of Intramurals, are being deserted. Another example is also the last MUST Days which was also regarded as a major event for the fourth founding anniversary of the university. Again, only activities during night time are being participated by the students. The MUST Next Top Model, Band Fest and MUST Got Talent are supported for by students and spectators. It has always been a challenge to every set of Supreme Student Council (SSC) to encourage student participation in every event, majors and minors alike. Before the University Election, candidates had their Miting de Avance and as usual, included in their platform is to attract student participation in the university’s events. This statement listed in their manifesto is but a cliche. The past sets of SSC officers were unsuccessful in encouraging even three-fourths of student population. Is it about the activities being conducted? Is it around the scheme of the organizers? These could be somehow half of the entire answer. The remaining could be because of the kind of students residing here in MUST: so passive and indifferent. In the university election last year, only few voted but when results came out, many complained and worse, many criticized the winning candidates. The question is, did all complainants vote? Perhaps, even 50% of the population failed to do so. It is not actually an obligation of the SSC or any student body to plead for 100% student participation, but it is their work to give interactive activities being the set of students given the task in organizing. It is also not a requirement for students to participate in the activities, but rather it is their responsibility to take part and contribute to a successful event. Reiteration: students are not just simply students by name, they are not just stakeholders, but they are pride of the university they are part of. So when sought, let them stand, not hide in behind. Let it be clear to all people called “students.” T h eTrailblazer

Showbitzocracy in Philippine Polls Irene Joy B. Dayo

P

oliticians are now bidas in TV! Anyone may argue with this statement but for me, it’s a straight fact. Often than not, you could watch politicians and aspirants alike smile at you while you are excitedly awaiting your fave television program. Maybe, campaigns through media could be considered as “proven and tested,” the reason why various folks call it effective. Well, all I want to say is don’t let the blind folds cover your eyes, for 2013 Elections is fast approaching. Popularity is the key to opportunity. That is the trend in the Philippine political arena right now. True enough, being popular is another point for one to be remembered during polls’ day. Media is the root of such sought-after popularity. Media are communication technologies which act as means of communication, like television, radio, print and internet. Such things could reach thousands of audiences; hence, election campaigns are indeed flooding in media. Now, who could be the ones affected of such trend? If I may cite a few, included in my list are the political aspirants and the press. The press is considered as the fourth estate of the nation. Fourth estate is a term that positions the press as a fourth branch of government and is important to a functioning democracy. Being more effective through media, the press could be at times pointed as biased, though required to exercise neutrality, especially in pre-election coverages. Feeding people information about political candidates could be the grounds on this, for some of them see news and documentaries as avenues to endorse or undermine the candidates. In addition, there is this so-called “showbitzocracy.” According to Dr. Flovangel Rosario Braid of Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, the upcoming elections in the Philippines are referred to as “showbitzocracy.” There is show business in politics where candidates seek popularity through media. Projects implemented and personal recognitions are then showcased. The “popularity” trend would also affect political aspirants for they will find out how dirty politics is. In politics, there is no sense of respect and honor. In relation to this, let me say that candidates of Mindanao University of Science and Technology’s election for next Supreme Student Council may end up with the same scenario. Parties judge other parties and throw stones at one another, as witnessed in the Miting de Avance last February 20. Perhaps, that could be it; to lift up oneself and pull down the other side (not to mention that candidates are currently on the same administration or side). Maybe, to be more popular and to win points over the other. And where they could have learned it? There. Philippine politics is maybe just about popularity. Is there a chance to improve it? Perchance, there is. Go beyond what you see, look deeper to the candidates’ platforms and deepest to their actions.

alking about our school Identification Card, well this is a topic one would not miss. Be it during our enrolment period or even until the end of the semester, it still is a hot topic. Well, I for one believe that it is equivalent to a woman’s “monthly period”, so to say, that it is never-ending as it somehow follows the same cycle every year. However, I am ridiculed with the fact that even if we have already received our IDs, it seems as if it still is not there, that there is no laminated rectangular-shaped card hanging on a sling not worn or just simply hidden? Problems regarding the delayed release of our school ID, the poor quality, and even on the tiresome process of claiming it are no longer new to us. Honestly, I could not remember how many articles that talked about our school ID, the printing press, and the personnel involved have already been published on the student publication’s magazines. I am not pressing my point about these evident facts for it will be like running around the bush; I would like to stress on what happens right after we received our IDs. If we truly are students of this institution, then I believe we already are aware that some students really do not wear their school IDs when inside the university premises. Twenty steps or so after entering the school gate, we will notice that some students take off their IDs or in the boys’ case; they hide it underneath their school uniforms while pinning their sling on the buttons, especially on Wednesday where we flaunt our dashing clothes, while the girls think about their “I-can’t-wear-make-up, I’ll-wear-make-up” and the boys on their “I-won’t-put-gel, I’ll-put-gel” daily routine, we are so busy trying to look perfect, when in fact we already forget the most important requirement, our school ID. I am not acting clean on this, for I too am not safe. I just want to make it clear that we should always instill into our minds and in our hearts that we need to walk the talk. We keep on complaining when in fact, after the institution provides us with our needs, we take it for granted. I am not pressing on this issue only, I mean look at the buildings and the facilities that are provided for us, what do we do in return? Make additional “back doors” on our buildings, for it is not just about the money? Our IDs distinguish and make us the MUSTean we are now. Now, think about this; are you ashamed of your ID picture that is why you hide it underneath your uniform? Or are you just not proud to be an MUSTean?

ticipated by 17 winning schools and a total of 30 participants from Regions X and XII and ARMM. The Chemistry Olympiad ran for two phases, the moving exam and

the oral exam. The moving exam, which consists of the common laboratory experiments and apparatuses took place at the 2nd floor of the Science Complex. On the other hand, the oral exam was conducted at the Audio-Visual Room of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Building, 4th floor. Each region had its individual winners, and an inter-regional champion was selected. Among the competing schools, for Region XII oral exam, Mindanao State University – Marawi Secondary Laboratory School won the first place. Philippine Science High School (PSHS) grabbed the first place for Region X oral exam and the laboratory exam. PSHS also won as the inter-region champion.

ave you noticed visible physical changes around the school aside from the transfer of the gate that welcomes students to a pebbly rough road? If you do, a good MUSTean you must be. If not, you are the other way. 2013 is a good year for Mindanao University and Science and Technology (MUST) with the obvious noisy pounding on the walls and drilling on the ground and the noticeable upgrade of facilities that shows development of the university.

Gymnasium Three years have gone yet students were unable to access the gym. It was lying stale with remnants of ashes and trails of soot on the walls of the building. At present, the construction of the gym is at its near completion; lights have been installed, the conventional stage has been replaced by a movable one, from the typical flooring now improvably substituted with synthetic flooring, equipped with the latest and best audio system, and installed fibreglass-tempered basketball board. The gym is said to open March of this year.

Engineering Complex The 6-storey and 8-storey combined buildings begun its construction last February 6, 2013 during the MUST Days. It will soon rise in the right wing of the university and is expected to be finished within the one-year time frame. In an interview with the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) Dean, Dr. Ambrosio Cultura said that inside both buildings will be classrooms, laboratories for the different courses under CEA, Engineering library and an Audio Visual Room (AVR) that has a capacity of catering 600 people. He also added that there will be additional equipment and facilities to be provided

after the construction. When the budget was tackled, Dr. Cultura said that Php 10M went to the mere design with the total of Php 218M, including the air-conditioners, generators, yet excluding the facilities. The complex covers the old hallway, old gate, building 20, Department of Science and Technology building, open-court and the Alumni Building. The head of the design department is Architect Rey Galua, a professor in MUST who is also in-charge of the reconstruction of the Gym.

New Labs Good news for the students of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), as new equipment for the opening of laboratories in the fourth floor of the Science Complex have arrived. Five laboratories are about to be unveiled such as the Advance Physics, Food Preparation, Biology, Material Science and Multimedia laboratories. All four except for the Multimedia laboratory are found in the said building which will occupy rooms 405 – 407. The excluding lab is found at the fourth floor of the Learning Resource Center (LRC).

E-lib

If you wondered why the Electronic library (Elib) went missing-inaction (MIA) a month ago, it was because the administration replaced all computers with new sets that feature an 18.5 wide screen monitor, an iCore3 processor, mouse and keyboard – all from Dell Incorporation. They officially opened the library last February 2, 2013. The technological refurbish started during last year’s semestral break and it took them another month to pull out all ‘ancient’ computer units. Currently, 77 Dell computers are approximately used out of the total, 100. The remaining 33 are

still inside the boxes because the e-Lib staff have to wait for newly purchased tables. Although the connection is the same, running on 2.2 megabytes (MB), it will be a big help for students in doing their researches and browses.

Multimedia Laboratory Those students who have Multimedia classes will surely be happy to hear this because there is a laboratory intended for the subject. The laboratory is located at the LRC AVR with 31 computers, including one unit for the teacher. It is a 4-in-1 language program since it allows students to record their voices following a teacher-designed prompt (audio), a Movie Maker for editing videos and for enabling the teacher to broadcast what he/she is watching to appear in the students’ computer screens (video), a chat room for students to interact with their teacher (text) and the teachers’ privilege to choose from different options in selecting the type of exam the students will take. The lab will open this June since the area is not yet fully air-conditioned. The administration invested on the construction of modern infrastructures with avant-garde designs which will not only add to the positive appeal of the campus, but also to utilize the area so as to primarily provide more rooms for students. They also made laboratories that will help students in furthering their knowledge through application. *** So MUSTeans, hold your horses. Do not rush on mashing chairs, doodling on the walls and desks and throwing garbages unethically, among others. As advised by the school authorities, act morally and obey rules. Take care of the things here in the university. We are all educated and well-mannered, right?

927. The Misamis Oriental Trade School (MOTS) was established here in Cagayan de Oro City. It was still operating at elementary level that time. Little did anyone know at that time what the future holds for this little institution. Then came 1952, and MOTS was converted into Mindanao School of Arts and Trades (MSAT), which offered two-year trade technical education. 26 years later, it transformed into Don Mariano Marcos Memorial Polytechnic State College (DMMMPSC). But it did not stop there, because DMMMPSC was renamed Mindanao Polytechnic State College (MPSC) in 1991, with college programs greatly focused on science and technology. And finally, in 2009, Republic Act No. 9519 signed by thenPresident Gloria Arroyo converted MPSC into a university.

2013. Four years later, where are we now?

Indeed, it is inspiring to see how much this institution has flourished. New buildings dot the campus, and new constructions are on the way. The establishment of the Learning Resource Center (LRC), followed by the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Building, and the Science Complex (SciCom) are just some of the proof that we are indeed rocketing to greater heights as a university. But wait, there’s more! Fire may have claimed it, but our fallen gymnasium is making its comeback, better than ever. Also, sacrificing some of our old structures is inevitable, but look on the bright side; we’ll get an 8-storey Engineering & Architecture Complex in return! Plus, more advanced structures are coming to town, like the University Dormitory and the new Student Center. Moreover, when it comes to academic matters, we can’t deny that MUST does excel. In fact, this school has been accredited to Level IV by the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities of the Philippines (AACCUP). AACCUP has also accredited various school

ABOUT THE ARGUMENT Being an MUSTean, we cannot deny the glorious achievements that this university has attained. Although, one might say that this institution still falls short of what we really expect. So which is which? Jeffry Quiñanola’s “We MUST Be Proud!” discusses the perks of being an MUSTean, and the reasons why we must be proud of it. On the other hand, junella Therese C. Espejon’s “Surpised? Oh My...” argues that the so-called glorious achievements cannot hide the “rotten apples that spoil the bunch“. Out of the two cases, which one do you agree with? Read and ponder. Ponder and understand. understand and choose. Just don’t forget to choose wisely.

programs of the university. Another proof of quality education that the school offers is the high-passing rate of board exam takers. We cannot deny that MUST produces large numbers of board passers.

So, you see? Why complain?

Why complain about flooding, when that problem has already been resolved? Why complain about the new gate, without thinking of the rewards of this sacrifice? Why complain about facilities and equipment, when most of the time, the students are the reason for their decrepit states? Why complain about the Intramurals and MUST Days, when in the first place, the ones who complain don’t even bother to involve themselves? Why complain, when there is a lot to gain? A lot of people have witnessed the humble beginnings of this place, and though it has encountered random difficulties and issues, it still is standing tall. Why don’t we just turn those negatives into positives? It’s what we have always done. Mindanao University of Science and Technology. This is our school, our second home, our alma mater. And I am very proud to say that I am an MUSTean.

hree years ago, the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Building was built. In 2011, the five-storey Science Complex (SciCom) was established. Last year, the Gymnasium was renovated. And now, the Engineering Complex is on its way. But the real question is, are we really surging up? Through the years, Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) has been considered as one of those developing universities. We had the plans, we were given the budget… then our plans and dreams came true. The new buildings were not just considered as soon-to-rise for they have already risen. When people outside the MUST community were asked about the university, they would always look up to us for they knew we have been improving a lot, more than what they expected. Our buildings are not just tall, but wide too. The materials used were up-to-date and the contractors were even great. All the plans for our university’s progress were made carefully for the goal was not just about building new and wide buildings, but promoting quality education, technology and a friendlier environment, I must say. Amazing infrastructures, yes. Quality education is very much proven. Technology

is very naked in the eye. But the environment? I doubt. We have the best employees in terms of service and loyalty and there is no way corruption can take place for we are advocates of transparency, no question about that. Corruption and other things are the commonly considered hidden agendas of every institution. But in MUST, it is very much different. The hidden things here are the very obvious ones, but the community is simply oblivious about it. I know, people out there have noticed these, but were just too busy to get involve. Until when are we going to keep our mouths shut? Until we see goats and cows around our campus? Until trashes will be more visible than grasses? Until the tiles will all be broken? Or until we wake up from this reality of having snakes and other animals living inside our school when in fact we are not offering any agricultural courses, as I remember. The action must be done now, not later. Let’s accept it, our place was never a better one. Aside from the foul smell coming from the creek and the land mines produced by the cats, it is the people inside who care less. We may have the most modernized buildings but behind those masks that cover the real face of MUST is the exact opposite. We were never counted as part of the modern world and that’s the truth. We stayed traditional and that includes not caring about the environment, whether it’s polluted, clean or simply frustrating in the eyes. We may have these big reasons to be admired by many but let us not forget that it’s the little things that will count, and sometimes, it is capable ruining things we have been working on for too long. Being progressive and successful will not make us wealthy, because our real treasure lies within us- our place. We have enough. We need to care more. We must. Let’s be involved in seeking for what we deserve. Forget those times when all we do is hide, cover our shortcomings with our success and pretend that we are fine, because we are not. If nobody acts, why can’t we start the change? Stop hiding, end this now. Let us be the seekers of the surprises, not the surprise itself.

Scarborough Shoal Dispute The issue sparked on April 8, 2012 when Gregorio del Pilar ship (Philippines) was sent to probe on the Chinese vessels docked on Bajo de Masinloc or commonly known as Scarborough Shoal and later found sea living organisms like corals, sharks and giant clams that were believed to be illegally collected. Tensions are still building up until this very day. Though news about the clash is not visibly aired today, the stand-off between two countries are still irreconcilable.

#No To Cybercrime Law Whatever social networking platform you may go, Cybercrime was infamous. Everyone, even those who seem not to care, were infuriated as they went black on their profile pictures, cover photos and display pictures as a sign of protest. We remember that Senator Tito Sotto, who has shown full support of the proposition, was flocked with mean gripes. However, the law does not cater on pure oppression of freedom of expression (which most believe it is) but also includes cyber squatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data and online libel.

Pacquiao’s Defeat and Donaire’s Redemption

As many said, “the mighty has fallen”.

2012 was not a fruitful year for Pacquiao as he was defeated twice by Timothy Bradley (USA) and Juan Manual Marquez (Mexico) respectively. With a 115-113, 113-115, 115-113 split decision, the WBO Welterweight Championship was awarded to Bradley. Also, with a knockout (KO) which shocked everyone especially the Filipino supporters of Pacquiao, Pacman was beaten by Marquez. Pacman’s career record moved to 54-52 while Marquez’s to 55-61. Nonetheless, Pacquiao accepted two of his defeats wholeheartedly with humbleness. In December, Nonito Donaire (Philippines) stopped his opponent, Jorge Arce (Mexico) at the third round with a KO at

a 2:59 remaining time. Donaire felt that there was a pressure of needing to perform for the Filipino fans after Pacquaio’s loss from Marques. The Filipino boxer ended the fight with a clean right on the Mexican’s chin.

Corona and His Crown Just like his ally, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA), Renato Corona, the 23rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, also faced trial for 43 riveting days because of his issues and was found guilty of the Article II of the Articles of Impeachment. The trial was led by Senate President and presiding Senator Judge Officer Juan Ponce Enrile and was witnessed by the 24 senators who also became senator-judges. Later, he was found to have betrayed the public trust when Corona partially and subservience in cases involving the Arroyos, failed to disclose his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALNs), failed to meet the standards of the Supreme Court and three more others. With 20 for convict and 3 for acquit, Corona lost his crown and was impeached on May 29, 2012.

Deaths of Remarkable People The deaths of the King of Comedy, Dolphy and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary, Jesse Robredo devastated the whole country. Rodolfo Vera Quizon, Sr. or commonly known in the entertainment industry as Dolphy died on July 10, 2012 at the age of 83 due to multiple organ failure, secondary complications caused by pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute renal failure. Robredo and three other men were first gone missing near the sea of the Masbate City. V-Day is for Global Revolution

Alyssa C. Clenuar

ebruary 14, 2013, the world commemF orates the 15th anniversary of the One Billion Rising movement where

“Enough! The violence ends now!”

men and women are invited to strike, dance and rise – the movement’s theme. It is a global call participated by different women’s groups and individuals who demand to end the violence of one in three women who gets beaten up, raped and other abusive acts. Through the global dance, a collection of strength in numbers of the participants and in solidarity across countries, the revolution prevailed. CDO’s participation The local Gabriela Party (GP), a known group which is famous for pursuing feminism-involved movements held the event at the Magsaysay Park where approximately 500 men and women participated. Some of the groups who supported are Marie Stopes, Alagad Mindanao and Tubaga. Students from different universities helped attain a successful event. Wore in pink shirts, women danced to the One Billion Rising song. Women of different ages were also present; oldies, kids, teenagers, adults and even men also came out and showed their full support of the event. Ingrid Agudo, who is running for the City Council, partook in the affair. In an interview, Rhoda Bulosan, GP Regional Coordinator of Region 10 said, “we believe that no one can help them not even the law kung dili ang ilang mga kaugalingon ug ang ilang kahibalo sa ilang mga katungod…we have showed the whole city and the whole nation and whole world that through dancing, the revolution of women to end violence was leveled up.” T h e One Billion Rising is a build-up activity for March 8’s International Women’s Day. Men’s Involvement Though the event was largely composed of women, men were also present during the event showing their support for a vow to fight violence. City-known Juan Sia and Ian Mark Nacaya, representing the City Council, were also present in the affair. Through resolution no. 11305 – 2013, it supports the event not only for this year but also for the year thereafter. It was signed by Arturo S. de San Miguel, City Council Secretary and Ian Mark Nacaya, City Councilor and Presiding Officer. *** Few continued to dance until the program wrapped-up. Some were having fun, some were seriously shouting their advocacy, a lady continued thanking everyone who attended, others had a picture-taking, others asked some media men to have them recorded in a video. The momentarily event may have ended but, the revolution continues all over the world saying “Enough! The violence ends now!”

A Sequel At Last! At Last!

ouldn’t get enough of a good movie? Waiting for the follow-up of a story with an ending that has left you hanging? After months or maybe even years of patiently waiting for a sequel, the movie makers have finally come up with answers to the question that has been brewing in a number of movie-goers’ minds: “what happens next?” 2013 is the year for the return of some of the most anticipated movie franchises shown on the silver screen.

The Wolverine After the death of Jean Grey and the discovery of the “cure” for genetic mutation which led to the loss of special abilities by quite a large number of mutants which transpired on the X-men movie sequel “The Last Stand,” most of the members of the X-men have disbanded leaving within Wolverine a sense of isolation. Wolverine travels to Japan were he clashes with a samurai warrior and encounters somebody from his obscure past. The movie is scheduled for release on the 24th of July.

Iron Man 3 Straight from the Avengers movie in which Iron Man teamed up with other marvel heroes namely Captain America, Thor, Incredible Hulk and Black Widow, Tony Starks is set for a new episode where he once again takes the lead role as hero. This time he faces a powerful and perhaps the most famous enemy of Iron Man in the comics, Mandarin. Also he finally finds the answer to the question that has haunted him: “Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?” The movie premieres on April 26 in the U.K. and May 3 on the U.S.A.

Paranormal Activity 5 Now this is a movie which has been getting mixed reactions from different audiences. Some say it scares the hell out of them. This may be due to the element of rawness which is projected by the CCTV-quality concept of the film. However, others find the movie plainly boring and more so lame. I guess there is no need to state the plot of the story; we all know what the movie is about. Paranormal 5 will be due for release on the month of October.

and furious featured Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) as a police officer by the name Luke Hobbs on a mission to bust a drug syndicate and on the process crossing paths with the main protagonist Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel). In the post credits of the movie, it was shown that Hobbs was going over a file concerning the hi-jack of a military convoy in Berlin. Along with the pictures was a photo of Dom’s girlfriend whom they have assumed to be dead. This scene suggests that in the upcoming movie, Fast and Furious 6, Luke Hobbs and Dom Toretto will have a round two of their face-off in the previous movie. For the ones eager to watch this film, it will be available in cinemas on the last week of April this year.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters The modern-day titan Percy Jackson has yet another adventure to take alongside his reliable set of friends. The demi-god embarks on a journey to look for the Golden Fleece and save Camp HalfBlood from dangerous monsters. This will surely be another fun-filled movie watching experience for the youngsters and the young-at-heart. The movie will be showing on the month of August.

Despicable Me 2 Who could resist the extremely adorable yellow-colored Minions from the movie Despicable Me? Now, they are back to entertain us some more. As a promotional stint, they released a song featuring the voices of the minions way before the movie premiere. The song entitled Barbara-Ann has been a widespread ringtone on cell phones (which I believe you have already heard more likely than not) has gotten movie watchers anticipating what the movie has in store for them. Then a trailer was released which featured the Minions becoming curious of the strange noises that they have been hearing and then were later abducted by a mysterious energy. Watch out for this movie on July 3, 2013. and me a penny and I will show you the future. Seems impossible? No, it is not. They say that big things start with small ones. You will agree with this when one day you will witness 10,000 classrooms being built through a ten-peso coin being collected from individuals around the country. You might wonder what these things are all about. TEN (The Entire Nation) Moves! , is the focus here. This is a campaign managed by Ayala Foundation, Inc. (AFI). The main goal of this fundraising movement is to raise enough resources to build 10,000 classrooms for the public schools here in the Philippines. TEN Moves was publicly launched on October 14, 2011 at the Fountain Area of Ayala Triangle in Makati City and was introduced in the Intramural 2012 here in Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST). The objective of this program is to get two million people to give Php10.00 a day for 10 months. In calculation, it will be Php300.00 per month and Php3,000.00 for the entire ten months for each individual. As what the Department of Education (DepEd) says, there is a shortage of approximately 66,800 classrooms in the country from the previous school year 2011-2012. The budget of DepEd is not enough to provide all the classrooms in the country. This is the reason DepEd requested the private sector and the ordinary citizens to help in covering the remaining 10,000 classrooms because their budget will only allow 56,000 classrooms. “We are calling on all Filipinos to work with us in bridging resource gaps, especially the task of addressing the classroom shortage, which is a critical step in providing enhanced opportunities for millions of Filipino children”, Brother Armin Luistro FSC (Fratres Scholarum Christianarum), Education Secretary said. The Philippines is divided into three island groups of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. These will be the general locations of the classroom constructions. It means that public schools here in Mindanao will also be included to have new conducive learning classrooms. Now, what can your ten-peso coin do? Well, it will change the future of the new generation. It can shelter those kids in some poor areas of the country. It can build a brighter tomorrow for the Philippines. There are coin banks around the campus. Being a MUSTean, you too can be of help by giving a part of your allowances.Drop a coin now! ome call it end of the world; S others call it The Great Tribulation. The 12-21-12 created various speculations whether if it is going to happen or not. Now that this predicted date is over, still, this does not mean that we are safe to this ordeal. This might not happen today but someday it will come, into the time where we unexpected it the most. Now, the question is, are you prepared if this time comes? Signs or Just an Imagination ? Many different things which are happening today are just signs of the upcoming distress. The tragedies, false prophets, wars and self acclaimed gods are said to be indications of the tribulation. As the gospel reaches the world and technologies leading to the advancement for the mark of the beast were some proofs stated in the Bible that the end time is near. As the Bible tells in Luke 21:28, “But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. “ The war between Israel and Palestine is the most notable dismay nowadays. This reincarnated conflict will lead to universal chaos against Israel as stated in the Bible in Psalm 83:4, “They have said, Come, let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name Israel may be no more in remembrance.” Even the recent gadgets and latest technological innovations have something to do with it. The biochip which was a great advancement in the world of technologies will later be called as the mark of the beast or the 666. The most recent strange thing that happened was when a comet struck a certain city in Russia. Another strange phenomenon that certain parts of the world are experiencing today is the strange sounds that they hear. It was said that they hear various sounds like the rumbling of the earth, angels singing, sounds of trumpets and drums.

The Bible Speaks

The Bible is not silent that tribulation and the second coming of Christ will happen. Several verses clearly stated things out. According to the book of I Thessalonians chapter 4 verse 16, “For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.” In Revelation 1:7, it also states that, “Behold, cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall ail because of Him. Even so, Amen.” Repentance: Mind Doing So?

Ask forgiveness and you will be forgiven.

We are all given the choice to choose whether to believe this prophecy or not. But no matter what decisions we will make, the future is certain. Christ’s second coming may mean an end to many but this means an eternal life to some. As what we can read in I Thessalonians chapter 4 verse 17, “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” To those who choose to have Christ in their life and accept Him will be saved. But, to those who turned their backs, the Bible is not silent rather. Revelations 20:15 said “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

Now, if I ask you again, are you prepared?

ith a total of 18,053 elective posts for both national and local, will there be a rise of genuine leaders this May 13, 2013? Well, the country is again set for a historical marking as people make their stand towards the selection of its new sets of leaders. Now, here is the question: Is Juan de la Cruz ready for this? Juan de la Cruz will definitely have the widest choice of candidates among the aspiring leaders of this generation who are fit for the position. Among these aspirants are candidates of the following posts: senators, district representatives, party-list representatives, governors, vice-governors, members of sangguniang panlalawigan, city mayors, city vice-mayors, members of sangguniang panlungsod, municipal mayors, municipal vice-mayors, and members of sangguniang bayan. The senatorial candidates and party-list groupscampaigned firstto win the heart of every voter, as the campaign period kicked off last February 12, 2013. On the first day of the campaign period, a proclamation rally took place simultaneously on two different cities, Manila and Cebu, with two different parties, Liberal Party (LP) and United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), respectively. These opposing parties are considered to be the giants of the 2013 elections as they are led by President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III for LP, and the infamous three kings of the politics, Former President Joseph Estrada, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Vice-President Jejomar C. Binay Sr. for UNA. These two big groups in the arena of national politics have been a major source of buzz as rifts between them are slowly taking place. Big names and prominent clans in politics are present in this year’s senatorial race such as: Angara, Aquino, Binay, Cayetano, Cojuangco, Enrile, Ejercito, Gordon, Honasan, Legarda, Maceda, Magsaysay, Madrigal, Pimentel, Trillanes, Villar and Zubiri. On the other hand, familiar names are also in attendance of the said race like Akbayan party-list Representative Riza Hontiveros, Bayan Muna party-list Representative Teddy Casino, Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn, former Movie and Television Review and Classification

Board (MTRCB) chairman and daughter of Fernando Poe Jr., Grace Poe and both Presidential Candidates of the previous election, JC de los Reyes of Ang Kapatiran and Eddie Villanueva of Bangon Pilipinas. With the long list of candidates in this year’s senatorial posts, it is a sure bet that Juan de la Cruz’ dilemma toward choosing the right leaders has just begun. The campaign period that is allotted for the House of Representatives and elective posts for regional, provincial, city and municipal is just about to begin on March 29, 2013. Even if the anticipated date is still approaching, candidates in the aforementioned positions are already making scenes that would publicize their names positively and their opponent’s names negatively. This has always been the scenario of every election in the country. But definitely, everything will end up on May 11, 2013 as it was dated by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) as the end of the campaign period. Juan dela Cruz should prepare not just his ears, but his mind and heart as well, for in the coming days he will be hearing sugar-coated words that are dipped in the sweetest lies as the days of campaign keep on rolling. It is up to de la Cruz if he is willing enough to sell his convictions in times like this. Promises that are enveloped in platforms of every candidate presented on rallies, interviews and different ads might be a ring-a-ling to the ears, but will it be enough to move him toward casting his precious vote in favor of a candidate? As the campaign period draws near, Juan de la Cruz’ wisest pick of leaders must dawn on the 13th of May. In this second automated election, he must decide whether he will favor progress or continue seeing his country in regression. The days are already numbered; a big decision should be made that will definitely change the Bayan ni Juan. But Juan de la Cruz, are you ready for this? Forever Remembered, Engr. Oclarit

On the dawn of November 29, 2012, everyone mourned of the sudden death of Engr. Elma Oclarit at Maria Reyna Xavier University Hospital due to a tragic incident. Engr. Oclarit spent 28 years of passionate service starting from the extension campus in Alubijid in the year 1984 and transferred to the main campus on 1986-2012. She served for more than a semester as the Chemistry Department chairperson and as a chemistry Society’s moderator for almost two years. Her dedication to education led to giving off 2 scholarships to 2 deserving chemistry students and had been an instrument to achieve 100% passing rate during the licensure exam of the chemistry graduates of batch 2012. Supportive, stylish, smiling, straightforward, defender and motherly were just some of the words used to describe her by the people that are close to her. “A woman with fashion. A woman with the heart.” Mrs. Myrna Ceniza shared. Her kindness, unselfish dedication, commitment, and contributions especially to Chemistry Department will forever be remembered.

Goodbye

ela

Ma’am Ang

She is Ma’am Angela Noot – petite, fashionable, humorous, practical and her intelligence in Communication, religion, politics, among others, are incomparable. I bow down to the breadth of knowledge she knows. I was moved by her kindness when she ordered me to join Sibya’s, an annual event organized by Xavier University, last February 2012. I was a contributor of the Trailblazer at that time but was not motivated to write because of the constant downs abundantly poured by life. She told me to make passion above everything I do. When the competition came, she supported me all the way, like what I expected, wanted and needed. I did not win but had no hard-feelings because even in the presence of all my problems at that time and criticisms from people of my piece, she continued to encourage me to write more, my esteem heightened and my perspective

in life drifted away from the dark. October 25, 2012, she died. She had kidney failure and nobody knew among her students that she had problems concerning her health. I cried, gasped of disbelief, everyone too. Nobody expected because nobody knew until afternoon on the same day, came and the news spread out. It is amazing that she touched numerous lives and established personal connections with them in so many ways. She was a happy person. She was a fighter. She was fickle-minded. She was the coolest and funniest teacher. She was all that and more that we liked. She was a family to me and losing her is like losing a family member. Ma’am Angela, you may not be around anymore but the traces of your teachings, values and influences will be continued and you will be remembered.
