INTERNSHIP CLASS TURNS INTO AN ESCAPE ROOM

KTS STUDENT ISAIAH AND MOTHER SELECTED BY THE DC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AS A '22 SMALL BUSINESS HONOREE IN THE CATEGORY YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR

The DC Chamber of Commerce recently announced their 2022 Small Business Award recipients, and KTS' own Isaiah Hamilton was recognized as a "Young Entrepreneur of the Year" for the company that he and his mother Tiffany founded, Victor Wear. As Co-Founder/President of Victor Wear, Isaiah collaborates with his mother on t-shirt slogans and designs. He is also assisting with event planning and logistics, speaking to the media, and increasing his role as the face/lead ambassador of the brand – all while attending high school and participating in extracurricular activities! Victor Wear, and Isaiah, embody Young Entrepreneur of the Year by creating employment opportunities for differently-abled people. TLC/KTS is so proud of Isaiah for his incredible accomplishments!

In the internship classes, Job Internship Coordinator Shelley McGinness always looks for creative ways for students to practice skills they will need for the workplace. So why not bring the popular Escape Room activity to the classroom? Students loved the idea and were able to identify that it would help them work on several important job skills, including teamwork, communication, cooperation, problem solving and flexibility. This Escape Room activity (from the Teachers Pay Teachers website) also helped them to practice their alphabetizing skills and pay attention to details as they read through the multi-step directions. All students were actively engaged and remembered the importance of assertive communication and allowing everyone to assist. Students were able to voice their individual strengths and how they could help with each task. Students who are often a little quieter in class stepped out of their comfort zones and emerged as leaders. The laughter, camaraderie and aha moments made this activity even more worthwhile! Students are looking forward to their next Escape Room challenge!

GROUP COUNSELING FOCUS: SELF CARE During group counseling sessions for the month of May, students have been focusing on self-care; what it is and how they can incorporate self-care into their daily routine. Social workers have highlighted the areas of nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness, but have also discussed many other areas to improve self-care. The series is wrapping up in early June with the students creating a visual with self-care activities of their choosing. This visual reminder is actually a set of laminated cards (placed on a key ring) with activities such as taking a mindful walk, having a healthy breakfast, phoning a friend, going outside, exercise, taking the dog on a walk, cleaning their room (you are welcome ), writing in a journal, drawing, laying in the sun, and others. Students will also add their own ideas. They will be going home the last week of school so they can use them over the summer break.

SCIENCE FAIR This year, the middle school students demonstrated their knowledge of the scientific process by researching a topic of their choice and completing a project. The students were allowed to choose their projects from a menu of options. These menus were different for each grade level because each grade focuses on a different area in science. 6th-grade students chose projects related to earth science. Meanwhile, the 7th-grade students chose projects that focused on life science. Finally, the 8th-grade students decided on projects connected to the area of physical science. After the students chose their projects, they spent several days researching their topics. Then, the students either completed a science experiment or designed tools such as a barometer to measure the weather or a car powered by balloons. The students used the information they gathered from their research and projects to design a poster board. The students displayed their poster boards at the science fair at the end of May. At the science fair, the students described all the steps they took to complete their projects. They also summarized the results of their experiments and discussed the research behind their topics.
