A message for the New Year MY BROTHERS and Sisters in Christ, Our gracious and merciful God has allowed us to see the beginning of another year. Beyond everything else that He has done in our lives this is an important indication that our work on earth is not done. The book of Proverbs 16:3 states, “Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established.” Many of us use the new year to make resolutions about things that we would like to accomplish in the year ahead, many of us do not achieve those goals. It is understandable because of the allure of the comfortable and familiar. However, just like those who are newly converted, to accomplish the goals we set for ourselves, we should first ask God for His guidance then fully commit ourselves to the journey to get to where we would like to be. With God, the change you seek is not only within your reach but within your power. It is not enough to want a thing or experience without understanding that there will be effort needed to get it. In creating the earth God, Himself, rested on the seventh day after working to ensure that everything He produced had a purpose, was finely constructed and operated perfectly in tandem. I firmly believe that our country’s best days are not behind us but are ahead. These days will come to fruition with the collaboration of every Bahamian manning their stations. We have come this far by faith and doing the work to get here. In order to move forward more of the same is necessary from more of our

people who I know God has prepared for such a time as this. The Bible teaches us in John 10:10 that Jesus Christ came that we may have life and have it more abundantly. The life that you have been given is in your hands. It is up to you how you will live. Are you content to merely exist until God calls you home or are your resolved to live your life to the fullest? The decision is yours. Let this new year be the time that you decide that life is too precious to waste it. It is too fleeting to not at least attempt to live your dreams or life a time steeped in criminality and negatively. It is my hope that 2025 will be the year that you remember as a turning point in your life’s journey. I hope that it is the year that you endeavour to deepen your relationship with God and contribute to His work on earth. Faith and hope are all we need to propel us forward in whatever it is that we set our minds to do and God will give the increase. I am in great anticipation to hear all of the testimonies that will come from those who decide to do something. On behalf of myself, my family, the Bahamas Christian Council and the wider Bahamian Christian community I wish all Bahamian at home and abroad a very happy, prosperous and Christ flled year ahead. Please visit the church of your choice. May God bless you and may God bless the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Pope calls for commitment to protect life as he doubles down on abortion By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press POPE Francis ushered in the New Year with a renewed appeal for the faithful to reject abortion, calling for a “firm commitment” to protect and respect life from conception to natural death. Francis, 88, celebrated a New Year’s Day Mass in St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday that was dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. In his homily, he prayed that everyone learns to care for “every child born of a woman” and to protect “the precious gift of life: life in the womb, the lives of children, the lives of the suffering, the poor, the elderly, the lonely and the dying.” “I ask for a firm commitment to respect the dignity of human life from conception to natural death, so that each person may cherish his or her own life and all may look with hope to the future,” he said, using the terminology of the church’s opposition to abortion and euthanasia. In recent years, the Argentine Jesuit has been speaking out more emphatically about abortion than he did at the start of his pontificate. After two doctrinaire popes, Francis complained in the first months of his papacy in 2013 that the church had become obsessed by “small-minded rules” about hot-button issues such as abortion. Francis now regularly refers to procuring an abortion as “hiring a hitman to solve a problem”. He recently sparked outrage in Belgium when he criticised its abortion law as “homicidal” and announced he wanted to beatify Belgium’s late king who abdicated for a day rather than approve legislation legalizing the procedure. The Vatican recently announced that the beatification process is under way for King Baudouin, who died in 1993. The morning Mass marked the final big event of Francis’ busy Christmas schedule. For the pope, who suffers from recurrent respiratory problems, this year’s season was even more challenging with the start of the Vatican’s big Holy Year, a once-everyquarter-century celebration of the faith that is expected to bring 32 million pilgrims to Rome during 2025. Speaking to pilgrims who gathered in a sun-filled St Peter’s Square, Francis recalled the Jubilee’s central message of the need to forgive debts. He again called for world leaders from wealthy countries to eliminate or reduce the debts owed by poorer countries. Francis urged Christian leaders, in particular, “to provide a good example” by taking the lead to forgive debts.

A new year, and a new commitment By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Feature Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net WHILE making resolutions are becoming the cliche thing to do, many people cannot deny the newness a calendar year ushers in that inspire countless commitments and recommitments in certain areas of their lives. For example, a mother who’s been putting off a self-study course all year may find inspiration to do so knowing she has a full 365 days to pursue it and accomplish. And the Christian who has been trying to get through reading the entire Bible from the book of Genesis straight to Revelations, may use that same inspiration to refocus himself to this spiritual goal. Whatever the goal may be the new year tends to refocus people and get them on course. This is the case for several Bahamians who want to have a much more robust and vibrant Christian experience. And to see that happen they have made some spiritual commitments for the new year. Build a better friendship with God Tanya hopes to get out of the tradition of only fellowshipping with God on Sundays, and seek out a real authentic relationship with Christ. “The Christian experience is suppose to be one based on a relationship with Christ. Not something where we just follow traditional practices that lose its impact after a while,” she said. “God wants a friendship with us and this is the reason why I am striving everyday to ensure that I learn more about him and connect with him on daily basis,” she said. Tanya said she will he accomplish her goal by setting aside private time every day to pray, worship and simple listen to the voice of God. More God, less me While making resolutions is not something she does, Samita said she has submitted herself to the work of God in her life. This is something she hopes to not only carry on until the end of the year, but hopeful it becomes a permanent fix in her life. “I know that my prayer at the beginning of the year was to although it may sound cliché; but allow the image of God to permeate through me and to be cognizant to knowing his voice at all times,” said Samita. “More God, less me.”

Get into the word more Trevor understands that the only way to have a successful and fruitful Christian experience he must get into the word, read his bible more often so he can “become familiar with the character of Christ”. In doing this, he believes his transformation will take place. “The Bible is a mirror for the Christian. If we want to know how we are supposed to be living then it is in the word that we must look to. I can’t say that I want to be more like God without first knowing who God or what his character looks like. That really is important to me and I I making a point to learn more about God everyday.

Bear more fruit Being Christian without baring the fruit of the spirit - love, joy, peace, hope and forgiveness is an oxymoron. It also does not reflect the teachings of Christ that talk about knowing God’s people by the fruit in their life. “This year is all about that for me,” Dominic said. “I am not comfortable calling myself a follower of Christ if I am not baring fruit in my life. If I am always angry all the time, there is no peace in my life, I am sad, depressed and struggling then I am like everyone else. Jesus called us to a life that is set apart and different. The only way I know to live that set apart life is to stay closely connect to him,” he said.
