By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net AN ATLANTA church has gone viral on social media after its Watch Night service came under scrunity for creating a “concert-like atmosphere” featuring secular music with “questionable” lyrics by popular rappers. During the late-night New Year’s Eve church service at the dReam Center Church in Atlanta, Bishop William Murphy decided to count down the clock until 2024 with a medley of hip-hop songs which included the 2009 hit single "Swag Surfin'" by the group Fast Life Yungstaz and “Walk It Out” by Unk. He also told his congregation: “You gotta walk it out; that's how we going out of here tonight. Look at your neighbour and say walk it out. They trying to act like they don’t know what you’re referring to. Look at them and tell them, walk it out.” In the video, the bishop and his congregants can seen doing the popular swag surfin dance as the music plays. After the footage went viral all over the internet, the dReam Center took to its Facebook page to post that more than 150 people said “yes” to Jesus during

PASTOR William Murray of the Dream Center Church in Atlanta. their controversial service on New Year’s Eve. The caption on the post read: “This is bigger than 30-second clips, followers, or clickbait. We’re still building something that matters.” According to its website, Bishop Murphy and his wife launched The dReam Center Church of Atlanta with the aim of transforming lives while going through the arduous process of growing as a ministry. He is the presiding Bishop of Worship at Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International

Ministries under cofounder Bishop Paul S Morton. Additionally, he is a musical composer (with albums such as “Demonstrate”, “God Chaser” and “All Day”. People on social media were split on Bishop Murphy’s decision to play songs with lyrics that included references drinking and getting high, and swear words. One person said: “The fact that I am seeing more people for this than people disagreeing shows

crowns and wearing them throughout the day. In many countries, it is tradition to eat a king cake on this day. While there are a variety of recipes to be found around the world, it is usually a flat pastry style cake. In most cases a fève (‘fava bean’) such as a

figurine, often said to represent the Christ Child, is hidden inside. After the cake is cut, whoever gets the fève wins a prize. And in some countries, small gifts are given on Epiphany; these are meant to be representative of the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh the Magi brought the Christ child. And a final tradition could be to hold a house blessing or chalking. Chalking the door is done most commonly on Epiphany Day itself. People usually take chalk that has previously been blessed by a priest and write an inscription of the new year separated by C+M+B. For instance, in 2024, the inscription is 20+C+M+B+24. C+M+B stands for the Latin words “Christus Mansionem Benedictat”, which means “May Christ bless this house.” The letters can also stand for the traditional names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. It is similar to the marks the Israelites made in the Old Testament during the Passover.

Pastor Murphy’s choices to liven up the Watch Night service. One person said: “So you rather have us in the club? That night 150 souls gave their life to the Lord. Ya’ll only see a short clip and passing judgement. Church can be fun.” Another noted: “God is an awesome God; multifaceted - saving children and adults alike and meeting them where they are. I love it. And would have ran to the stage and rocked with them.” Yet another poster said: “Saving souls is the mission and he did just that. Let’s focus on that

instead of the music. Half these people in the comments probably wasn’t in nobody’s church on NYE.” Another person said judging others for their actions is not Jesus’s way: “Before you throw that rock at others, make sure that no one is able to throw a rock at you. All he have to do is repent and it’s done. Y’all said Kirk Franklin was too radical. Stop judging folks from what you see and hear and hope God don’t judge you from what He knows. He who without sin, cast the first stone.”

By CARA HUNT Tribune Features Writer cbrennen@tribunemedia.net NOW that New Year’s Day has passed, many people have turned their attention away from the holidays and towards resolutions and plans for 2024. But for many Christians, particularly those of a Catholic or Anglican faith, there is still one more important event to be observed: Epiphany - the feast that commemorates the visit of the Magi (the Three Wise Men or Three Kings) to the baby Jesus on January 6. In the church’s calender, Christmas begins on December 24 and ends on Epiphany on January 6. The symbol of Epiphany is often a star, which is said to have led Wise Men to the Christ child. This weekend is a great way to bring this story to life for the kids, especially without the distraction of Santa and Christmas gifts and other holiday activities. You may want to begin with a nativity scene and have your wise men start in various rooms around your home before they make way to the manger on Saturday, or you and children can make and decorate stars to hang around your home. Similarly, perhaps the kids would enjoy making their own

Popular Atlanta church under fire for ‘swag surfin’ into the new year FROM PAGE C46 me more that everything the Bible speaks on is being more and more fulfilled. I am not a person to judge, but as a leader of Christ, and especially a leader of a congregation this big, you should be teaching the people that there should be a difference between this world and the church. When we come to God, we must

leave behind the old ways. Yes, we sin and fall short daily, but we cannot get comfortable in that. I myself am someone who loves William Murphy’s music so I am shocked to see this.” One comment quoted Romans 12:2 NIV, saying: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to

test and approve what God’s will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Another person said: “I don’t want to hear about 150 people being saved. What does that salvation entail if they were lured in or celebrated by a concert talking about walking it out, bringing backs low, doing it with no hands, stop dropping and rolling. And proceeds to sing ‘got Hypnotic in my body

and a bad girl beside me’... ya’ll know the rest of the song. Like, let’s be for real. Salvation is coming from the world, not bringing your sin in the building and holding on to it. We must become new creatures. Nobody ever had to sell God to me. I had enough entertainment in the world and wanted to be free of it.” However, many agreed with and approved of

THE LEGATO VOCAL ENSEMBLE

Toni Wilson joins up with Legato Vocal Ensemble for new holiday evergreen By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net TWO local musical acts have blended their voices for a new collaboration which they hope will encapsulate the purpose of Jesus’ coming. Antonia "Ms Toni" Wilson, a distinguished figure in the world of gospel and inspirational music, has joined forces with the Legato Vocal Ensemble for a new single called "If Jesus Was Born In Nassau Town." The song was released during the holiday season and was described as “a heart-warming celebration of the Christmas spirit, blending gospel, soul, and Bahamian culture to create a

unique and enchanting musical experience.” Toni is known as a songwriter, vocal arranger, pianist and singer. All of her efforts over the years have paved the way for this release. Having earned three degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Master of Arts in Music, she continues to impact the music community through coaching sessions and clinics with music teachers in schools across Broward and Miami-Dade in Florida, and collaborations with faith-based organisations. The Legato Vocal Ensemble was formed in 2002 under the mentorship of Melton Mustafa

Sr. It has been a key element in bringing Toni’s musical vision to life. The group’s distinct sound draws inspiration from various musical genres, creating a harmonious fusion of sound that captivates audiences. The collaboration between the two has produced a melodic single they hope will longevity well after the Christmas season. “If Jesus Was Born in Nassau Town," was written by Audrey Florence Dean-Wright to explore the unique cultural experience of Christmas in the Bahamas. Toni added her touch to the arrangement, creating an edge which she said makes the song universally enjoyable.

ANTONIA ‘MS TONI’ WILSON

“The accompanying vocal ensemble and musical arrangement by Vaughn ‘V Keys’ Henry enhance the song's magic, making it a must-listen this holiday season,”she said. The new year has just started and Toni already has some big plans up her sleeve. She is looking forward to an upcoming collaboration with Dr Jerome Symonette that pays tribute to E Clement Bethel. She will also have a double CD featuring a cappella tracks and fully orchestrated works of originals as well as well-known songs. Further, there are plans for a community concert and a gala concert. “If Jesus Was Born In Nassau Town” is available for download

on over 35 media platforms, and Toni is hoping for widespread support from the Bahamian community; for them to show their appreciation for their culture and country.
