THE TRIBUNE

A new star in the East T

he Anglican Church of the Epiphany realised a dream more than three decades in the making when they dedicated their new sanctuary on January 7 during their Feast of Title celebrations. The church is named in honour of Epiphany, the period during which the church commemorates the visit of the Three Wisemen to the baby Jesus. Hundreds of people were on hand to witness the special occasion as Anglican Bishop Laish Boyd dedicated the building. In his sermon, Bishop Boyd spoke of the beauty of the new edifice and said that it was a significant milestone of which church members should be extremely proud. He noted the hard work and faith of Epiphany members in raising funds and remaining committed to the lengthy building process.

He also encouraged the congregation to consider what comes next, saying that a church is more than a building and the congregation should continue to shine for Christ. The Bishop also commissioned three new chalice bearers – Ishmael Adams, Cameron Hanna and Elcott Mackey – three young men who have grown up in the church. Epiphany’s rector, Canon Atma Budhu, paid homage to the members of the parish who have given so faithfully to ensure that this day would happen. In particular, he thanked his predecessor, Canon Delano Archer, the first rector of the church. Epiphany held its first service on April 23, 1989. The services were originally held in Canon Archer’s front yard before the church moved to its current location on Prince Charles Drive.

EPIPHANY RECITAL RETURNS TO CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL – Late Father Frederick W Fleischer to be honoured in new concert series – AFTER a three-year break because of the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, lovers of classical organ music will once again be able to enjoy the annual Epiphany Organ recital given by Dr Sparkman Ferguson, titular and principal organist of Christ Church Cathedral. The recital returns this coming Sunday, January 14, at 6pm. “This is the 22nd such recital that Dr Ferguson has given since he assumed the position of titular organist at the Cathedral,” said Adrian Archer, the Cathedral’s Director, or Music. “So, we are very pleased to see him resume the recital series.” This year’s recital will honour a special individual connected to Christ Church. “This year the organ recital takes place as a part of a new concert series the Cathedral’s music department has launched. We have decided to honour the memory of the late Father Frederick W Fleischer, the

longest serving minister of music at the Cathedral, with a series of concerts and musicals as befits someone who has contributed his life’s work to musicianship here in the Bahamas, both in private and public schools, as well as the church,” said Mr Archer. “In fact, Dr Ferguson’s recital is the perfect way to begin this series as he was a student of Father Fleischer and succeeded him as principal organist in 1993, and still services at the console of the German Oberlinger organs that lead the services at Christ Church.” It is expected that during the one-hour recital Dr Ferguson will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Edward Elgar, R Vaughan Williams, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Rene-Louis Becker, Walford Davies, Guy Eldridge and Carl Hayward. Admission to the concert is free, however, an offering will be taken to aid special projects at St John’s College.

MEMBERS of the Anglican Cursillo movement are getting ready to host their annual New Year’s Retreat, which will start Saturday, January 27, under the theme “Recalling, Reconnecting and Reactivating Cursillistas.” The three-day weekend, organisers said, aims to be a transformative event for all participants, both team members and candidates alike. One highlight of the event will be the address given by motivational speaker Spence Finlayson. “You cannot attend a Cursillo weekend and not be electrified and make a recommitment to Jesus Christ as Lord,” said a representative of the Cursillo Public Relations Committee. Cursillo (meaning “a short course”) is a method of revival of the church, said the committee member. “It has come to us from the Spanish Roman Catholic Church. The purpose of the Cursillo Ministry is to convert Christians to a deeper relationship with

God and to help them to understand their individual callings to be Christian leaders. This leadership may be in the workplace, at home, within social and leisure activities, or within the institutional church. The

goal is simply to ‘Christianise’ the world through the apostolic action of Christian leaders in all areas of human activity. The Cursillo Ministry was imported to the Bahamas 30 plus years ago and has provided

a rebirth for approximately 2,000 Bahamians in their Christian pilgrimage,” the organisation said. In the days ahead, members are are encouraging people to embrace 2024 and the journey that lies ahead; ensuring there is a functioning Cursillo representative in as many parishes as possible. They also want to encourage more group reunions at local parishes, and at least once a year - hold a parish Ultreya (a large gathering which derives its name from a Spanish word, which in turn comes from original Latin, meaning “Onward”.) “The goal is to recall, reconnect and reactivate Cursillistas in parishes throughout the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Cursillo Secretariat, the governing body of the ministry, wishes everyone a blessed and prosperous new year as we continue the work for the building up of his kingdom,” said a committee member. For all those interested, registration for the annual New Year's Retreat is $10. For more information, email pr@cursillobtci.org.
