Death Notice for

Retired B.D.C.S. Assistant Superintendent

DAVID BRICE DONALD, 91

Lionel Henzil Gilbert, 79

a resident of #3 Nebruck House, Sandyport who died on Thursday, January 11th, 2024 at his residence.

of Nassau, NP, Bahamas, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023 at his home in Camperdown. Dave was born on November 7, 1932 in Toronto Canada to the late John McKay Donald and Helen Brice Donald. He moved to Nassau as a child and was educated at Queen’s College in Nassau and St. Andrew’s College in Canada. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1955 with a degree in Industrial Engineering, he married his sweetheart Frances Holland of Atlanta. His engineering career began at J&L Steel in Cleveland, Ohio. Soon thereafter the US Army draft sent the newlyweds to postwar Germany for several years. After a few years in Savannah, GA working for Union Bag, Dave returned to Nassau for good in 1962 to help run the family business, Nassau Ready Mixed Concrete. In 1972 he purchased Island Industries, where he worked building Butler steel buildings until his retirement in 2010. Dave was also an original founder of Bahamas Waste Management along with his business partner and brother-in-law Peter Andrews.

Mourning his passing is his Wife:Verna Gilbert Children: Humphrey and Lavar Gilbert, Lana Brathwaite-Roseboro and Dr. Nadia Gilbert-Bannister Adopted Sons: Leading Hand Sidney Deleveaux and Norman Haven Grandchildren:Terou Jr., and Aidan Bannister. Sisters: Barbara Dorsette, Annamae Poitier, Wendy Gilbert, and Eugina Poitier Brother:Rev. Dennis Gilbert of Spring Hill, Florida Nieces and Nephews and a host of other relatives and friends The funeral announcement will be announced at a later date.

Dave was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Kirk, a Rotarian and a Commodore of the Royal Nassau Sailing Club. He was an avid tennis player, sailor, boater, snow skier and world traveler. Favorite destinations were Europe (especially France), Colorado, and anywhere a cruise ship could take them, including China, South America and the Panama Canal. Dave and Fran particularly loved going back to Georgia, where a stop at the Varsity in Atlanta was required on their travels to their river house in Hiawassee. Some of his unique hobbies were building elaborate model trains and genealogy, through which he traced his Bahamian roots as far back as 1800 until the trail dried up. The eternal optimist was challenged at times but remained passionate about his sports teams, the Atlanta Falcons, Braves and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (what’s the good word?) He adored his four children, grandchildren, many friends, Dalmations, Dobermans, Jack Russell terriers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and especially his beloved wife Fran. Dave will be remembered as a gentle and kind man whose generous nature and sense of humour made him “always a pleasure” to be around. Those left to cherish his memory are his three children, Laurie Dalton (Tom) of Concord, NC; Nancy Goldstein (Phil) of Atlanta, GA; and Mike Donald (Kim) of Nassau; eleven grandchildren Ryan Dalton (Andrea), Kerry Dalton, Sean Donald (Courtney), Eric Goldstein (Cait), Hadley Rexroth, Michael Dalton, Nick Goldstein, Shelby Rexroth, Maggie Dalton, Johnny Donald and Katie Donald, and one great grandson Maxson Donald. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Peter Andrews (Vicky), and his nieces and nephews Cathy, Phil, Geoff, Caroline, Sally and Anne. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances, parents, sister Susan Andrews, son Jack and daughter-in-law Susan. Dave’s remains will be privately laid to rest in the columbarium at St. Andrews Kirk. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The National Trust or the Cancer Society.

his Friday, January 19, the congregation of St George’s Anglican Church will welcome a native son, the Rev Father Andrew Toppin, as he is officially installed as the sixth rector of the church in “The Valley” Nominated by Diocesan Bishop, the Rt Rev Laish Boyd, and elected by the parish vestry last August, the 60-year-old cleric will receive his instruments of office and be vested into

the rectorship of the parish in a ceremony steeped in tradition, including the presentation of the keys to the parish church, vestments for the conduct of services, regulations of the diocese and seating in the rector’s stall. Father Toppin received his primary and secondary education at Queen’s College and St John’s College respectively. He has a BA from Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North

Carolina, and a BA in Theology from the University of the West Indies. After his ordination, he served as assistant priest at St Barnabas in New Providence until May 31, 1993. In June 1993, he began in his new role as priest-incharge of All Saints Parish in Mangrove Cat and South Andros. Then on January 1, 2001, he was appointed rector of St Luke’s in South Eleuthera and served the

people of that parish until July 2010. For the following three years, he served as assistant priest at St George’s in New Providence until his appointment in June 2013 as priest-incharge of the St James Parish in Adelaide. Bishop Boyd will preside over Father Toppin’s installation, which will take place within the context of the Holy Eucharist; he will also deliver the sermon. Other concelebrants will include

Father Ivan Eldon, the church’s associate priest, and Father Ruel Strachan, the rector of St Paul’s Parish, Clarence Town, the companion parish of St George’s in Long Island. ALL SAINTS ON CALVARY PREPARES FOR ‘FAITH ALIVE’ WEEKEND TO REACH MORE PEOPLE UNDER the theme, “A Renewal of Faith, Family and Church,” All Saints on Calvary is forging ahead with plans for its ‘Faith Alive’ weekend, set for January 26-28 at the church. During a training workshop, the church’s rector, Father Bradley Miller, admonished committee members with the words from Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in well doing, for in due season we will reap, if we faint not.” Father Miller noted, “God has a strange sense of humour and is working His plan out and therefore members should not become discouraged or despondent in their efforts to host the Faith Alive programme.” He urged them to continue to work and promote the weekend, and be enthused about it since God is working - “His purpose out in the midst of chaos.” This event was postponed

twice, but will now go ahead. National coordinator of ‘Faith Alive’ in the Bahamas, Rodney Williams of the parish the Most Holy Trinity, explained to participants that the goal of event is to reach the entire parish, unlike the ‘Discovery’ event which reaches 50 candidates, or Cursillo that attracts about 30 people. The ‘Faith Alive’ programme goes further to reach and draw in all members, even those who are on the fringes of the church. Mr Williams told the participants they should be mindful of Philippians 1:6, which states, “He who began a good work in you will bring to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” He reminded the group that God has called them to serve and has given them the gifts to build up His kingdom. He encouraged them to be willing to serve without excuses.

Mr Williams further emphasised that the host church, All Saints, plans the weekend and volunteers come in and take over so that parishioners can be ministered to. The weekend will start with a reception on January 26, 2024, where volunteers from throughout the Bahamas and the United States will be welcomed by All Saints. Then on Saturday, January 27, the parish will be divided into groups of five to seven people based on where they reside. They will meet in members’ homes to pray, read scriptures and develop a plan of action to reach out to their communities. Mr Williams pointed out that the neighbourhood groups are a significant component of the ‘Faith Alive’ weekend. These will ultimately become cell groups.

FATHER BRADLEY MILLER, rector of All Saints; Rodney Williams, national coordinator of ‘Faith Alive’ Bahamas, and J Carlton Smith, coordinator of ‘Faith Alive’ from All Saints on Calvary Hill.

Following this time of fellowship, members will return to the church for separate men and women’s luncheons. Mr Williams said he intends to bring in a dynamic team to minister to the men.

The weekend will also feature activities and field trips for the young; those aged three to 19. According to Joshua Cartwright, chairman of the Teen Programme, the focus will be on helping this age group navigate challenges such as

peer pressure, drugs, sexual issues and self-worth. A nursery will be available to participants who require babysitting services. The final events of the weekend are the Saturday evening closing reception, Sunday morning service, and a postmortem later in the afternoon. This is considered to be the most important element of ‘Faith Alive’. The follow-up will require members to meet regularly in homes to build bonds and do community outreach. For more information or to register for the ‘Faith Alive’ weekend, interested members can contact the church at 392-7220.
