“I am doing what I have to do to let my NAME be KNOWN among the people.”
From as far back as he can remember Michael A. Hepburn life has been immersed in end of life rituals. He has, in fact, been a lifelong student of mortality. Frequenting funerals as a young boy in Nassau later becoming a licensed funeral director and embalmer, and ultimately proprietor of Nassau very soon to be busiest mortuary, Michael has likely spent as much time in the presence of the deceased as he has among the living. He is equally comfortable in either realm, celebrating both life and death with a trademark style, equanimity and sincerity.
There’s not much difference in the little boy growing up in Pinewood Gardens, Finlayson Street Bain town, Ridgeland Park West, Balfour Avenue and Market Street. Jesus Christ, Discipline, Manners and Respect with a Good Education was the order of the day, instill at a tender age the principles of God in himself and other siblings, we would have devotions every morning before leaving for school and their Dad would annoint him and his little brother heads with Oil and Speak Life n Blessings over his children tho many times they fall short but for the Grace of God. They were not allow to do what many other children could of done or our doing because the principle of the fear which their parents had in them even under the doting and watchful eye of his parents: Anthony and Judith Hepburn; grand parents Ralph W. Johnson the brother-in-law of Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Garnet King and Verdell H. Johnson; and Cleveland “teach” Hepburn (deceased) grandparent; Mrs. Alexandria Hepburn the sister of Bishop Albert Hepburn aunts, uncles cousins the community and church members the man who is a mortuary mogul today. Born with a personality as big as his heart, Michael has always cared about making people happy, always worked hard to excel, and always exhibited an impeccable fair for fashion. Young Michael an 8 year old boy student who attend St. Francis and Joseph Primary School who would walk from school to his grandparents house through Baintown once school was over where his dad would pick him up to carry him home, after doing homework and eating he would go outside and perform funeral service for dead animals using toothpaste box with mommys gift wrapping paper for the decoration of the casket and a needle pin to lock it with toilet tissue as the casket bedding along with using his bike as the hearse and conduct a complete service in the front of his parents home (the front door to be exact) and buried the deceased animals on the side of the yard. It was then I discover my Calling. “Many are called but few are choosen”, but the difference is Michael was CHOOSEN and he anwsered the call an allow my GIFT to make room for him. Frequently on Friday evenings after school once his cousins and himself had change from our school uniform Michael’s Dad would drop them to Royal Ambassadors Meeting at Transfguration Baptist Church, Market Street and he would walk down by Demerittes Funeral Home, sometimes without telling anyone where he was going and then sometimes being seen going to view deceased persons often to whom he don’t even know, they merely looked asleep, but the experience made an indelible impression on him. He realized that seeing the dearly departed appear to be at peace in the casket gave comfort to those left behind to grieve their loss.
While most young people fear death, Michael frst job at about 14years of age, not surprisingly, put him in contact with the deceased. Already showing powers of persuasion, the precocious boy talked his way into a job putting fowers, rolling casket and working along with Mr. Higgs at Gateway Memorial Mortuary on Wulff Road at the time. Occasionally he was allowed to ride in the seat of the funeral car. On one such occasion, Michael experienced what can only be described as a calling, in which a voice spoke to him saying “this is what you need to do.” From that moment on, his
purpose in life was clear.
As the son of a Professional Chef I was expected to follow in my father’s footsteps, to take over his Catering Business. But the young man had other plans. The day came when Michael told his dad he was following his own dreams of becoming a “Undertaker / Funeral Director”
One day after school, Michael who never strayed far from his dream, walked across the street from his high school C. R. Walker Secondary School to catch the bus to Restview Memorial Mortuary to meet Mr. Sean Pratt who is a cerifed Mortician to whom attend Gupton Jones Funeral College. My uncle Dion Johnson aka “Rabbie” refer me to Mr. Pratt a brother. Mr. Pratt taught me the Practical knowledge and the art of embalming and restorative art in funeral service. He is an excellent Preceptor. Michael presented himself as a responsible, hard-working young man with plans to prepare for a career in mortuary science.
Filled with enthusiasm and excitement, Michael showed up after school the next day, and the next, and everyday throughout high school. He would eventually get employed by the company. There he learned the heart and soul of the business, offce administrating, embalming, setting features, mixing fuid and massaging it into body cavities. What might seem gruesome and morbid to most teen-agers, was absolutely fascinating to Michael. He eagerly pursued any opportunity to learn every facet of the business including being the Offce Administrator Michael would go on to assume responsibility for the hands-on, day-to-day operations, even driving funeral cars before he was licensed to drive, all while excelling as a student.
Following the lead of his personal black hero Martin Luther King, Jr. and upon graduating from C. R. Walker High School Michael worked with Restview until he felt he was ready to advance theorical in the feld of Mortuary Science when he was accepted into Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service Decatur, Georgia along with two other Bahamians Remourn and Rossneil Gibson to which each of our own parents supported us tremendously and Funded our Entire Mortuary Education. With his academic achievement intact, and part time job at Gregory B. Levett and Sons Flatshoal Location This frm would go on record to be recongnized for a Phenomonal Job on Bishop Eddie B.Long a Prominent Clergyman in Atlanta, Georgia and I Michael went on record to be recognized as the frst Mortuary Science Bahamian Student to be seen on A&E tv transporting a deceased that was murdered out of a Motel room on Memorial Drive in Atlanta, Georgia on the First 48 Blind Faith Episode 2012 Dekalb County Georgia and transport deceased to the Medical Examiners Offce (Morgue). It was an unforgettable experience.
Michael earned an associates degree in mortuary science, Mortuary Law along with the academic achievement award, mu sigma award, and completing and passing the National and State Board exams for Georgia, and Florida in Mortuary Science (Mortuary Law) (August 24th 2012) Graduating with a 97.8 G.P.A and being recognized with honors and graduating in the top 10 and 6 percent of class and Salutatorian of his Class. Michael was also apart of the Pi Sigma Eta Mortician Fraternity where he served as the Senor Artist (Vice President), and also was a member of National Funeral Directors and Mortician Association. Georgia (N.F.D.M.A)
While in college he continued to work at Gregory B. Levetts Funeral Home and Son’s and A.S Turner and Sons North Decatur Georgia funeral homes where he had become an integral part of the business experience. He also got a job working to La Baguette African Bakery Baking Bread in Snellville, Georgia to which he was able to sustain himself and acquire knowledge as well as money to survive.
After Graduation Michael return back home and continued with his employment with Restview Memorial Mortuary to which he worked at both the Nassau and Freeport Offce location, that changed his life a little bit. I waited on families, embalmed bodies, made funeral arrangements, then went on to Cedar Crest Funeral Home and fnally Evergreen Mortuary to end this career as an employee. “It was The Journey” Michael says, describing the varies experiences encountered at funeral homes but a blessing to which he was grateful for. Michael knew it was time to become master of his own fate.
“I realized,” he says candidly, “I can’t ride someone else’s back to success.” The revelation of the vision to which God have given to him God manifested the opportunity that came at this age of 28years old. Now at 35years after being turned down from 4 different buildings but had vision and determination with perserverance while faced with all sorts of obstacles to which was use as a spring board to perpell me forward and to which made the enemy thought he had won, but my Faith and Trust is grounded in God to whom is the foundation of my life knowing that all things work together for the good of them that love the Lord and are called according to God purpose knowing that God has already won the Battle and this is just a part of the process to which qualifes me for the VICTORY Believing, trusting God and Seeking God face opened the door of the Divine Favor of God Grace and made the approval on my life and on the 5th building to which At the time, the building housed a dental practice to which God use to began to establish Serenity Funeral Home and Crematorium to bring Glory to him which is the Purpose of my Funeral Home Ministry. While struggling to build the Mortuary, Michael decided the time had come to stop hedging, and to step out in a leap of faith. Knowing that the Harder the Battle the Sweeter the Victory. First and foremost I will NEVER let a situation or circumstance defne my life neither will I allow the perception of others to become my reality, because I have a commitment but more importantly I invested sweat equity, I have been working all my life. I understood the process was more important than the product and I understood by being determained to chase something and being committed to staying true long after the mood to which had set in had left. Being committed I understand everyday of my life there’s somebody in the world that is depending on me. It may not be you and if its just about you your in trouble because I am telling you you’re gonna hit something hard in life thats alot tougher than you and will test your willingness its gonna test your heart to see how true you are, if its just about you and the product it will crush you.
Alot of people need little money to be motivated, alot of people need whatever the case may be a little bonus to get motivated. I don’t need anything but God, Breathe and Life. Everyday I wake up, I understand I have a world that depends on me. The reason I go at life with the zeal that I have in me is because everyday I get up I understand its somebody in the free world thats looking up at me to see if I’m going to keep going so I can’t quit. The thing we need to understand about everything that were apart of is that its a BLESSING FROM GOD, and when its a blessing you can’t help but to give it all you’ve gat. So the opportunities that you pass up to be a blessing to other people which can save their life by just one encounter. Everyday I’ve made up my mind I am going to BE AM IMPACT, INSPIRATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT.
The launch of SERENITY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM, #153 BAILLOU HILL ROAD (directly opposite B.P.L.) on October 18th, 2018 was the realization of a lifetime ambition and fulfllment of his personal passion and God Master Plan. As the franchise will gradually expanded over the years expeditiously, Michael has maintained the simple down-home charm and meticulous attention to detail that defnes his brand. Michael is the youngest U.S. Trained and Certifed Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer Proprietor within the Funeral Industry in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas with over 20 years experience and over a decade as a us trained certifed mortician.
Clients visiting the Modist Stone Hand Crafted edifce in the heart of #153 Baillou Hill Road (directly opposite B.P.L.) experience a setting more like home than funeral home. The location is impeccably designed to make guests feel comfortable at a time when they are perhaps most ill at ease. Michael makes frequent appearances, warmly greeting guests as if they were old friends.
With the philosophy that a funeral service is more a celebration of life than a mourning of loss, he has developed a widely recognized signature style that is uniquely Michael’s “We plan a service,” he explains, “that the family can remember with fondness.
Michael prides himself on his services, including embalming, an art he started
practicing as a young teenager. “Some people say [their loved ones] look better dead than they did alive,” he says. Michael calls each grieving family and gives them a plaque at the funeral honoring the deceased. Before bodies are displayed, he ensures the deceased’s head is tilted at an angle to the right, facing their loved ones.
“This is just a shell,” Michael says while gazing upon a grandmother, who died of old age, lying in repose. “The spirit has already gone home to be with the Lord. You got your last chance to look at her. Now she’s just sleeping. They can be proud to look at her. She’s resting. She’s peaceful. She’s saying, ‘I got the victory.’”
For Michael the fanfare and ritual of funerals was entrancing: men and women dressed well, fancy cars moving in a solemn caravan, extravagant foral arrangements— he adored it all.
Still, it’s not the size of his business that will make Michael stand out; it’s the Services that he provides.
‘‘THE INNOVATOR OF SIGNATURE FUNERAL SERVICES.” Michael A. Hepburn L.F.D.E US Trained and Certifed. Often Imitated, Never Duplicated,’” “I’m doing what I have to do to let my name be KNOWN among the people.” “I want to bury everybody,” “I want to be a friend to everyone. They’re all God’s children.”
Providing Empathetic and Compassionate Service is what FUNERAL SERVICE IS BUILT UPON.
Whatever the service, whatever the family desires, contemporary or traditional, I make that happen,” “People go to any funeral, they don’t remember what happen.” They go to a SERENITY funeral they will be able to tell you what happened from start to fnish.
I am an innovator. I believe in the fare and glare. I don’t believe in the traditional.” “I need to make a statement. The person has yet lived because their memories live on.”
Too many people get into this business because of the money,” “But me, I LOVE the business I’m in and because of that, I’ll go one extra mile to provide good service.” Michael said many in the business have gotten away from serving.
“We had compassion for people and we really loved what I am doing. It wasn’t about the money.”
Number one is often imitated, never duplicated,” “I’m not mad you didn’t call me. It just say you didn’t want the very best.”
Serenity persisted, solidifying a reputation for pomp and circumstance and turning funerals into productions of pizzazz.
But Michael have a VISION.......
“I knew I had a calling.” I just wanted to be different from everyone else,” “I want to create a home-going celebration.”
“It’s not how much your going to spend with me, its how WELL WE ARE GOING TO SERVICE YOU.”
Personal service, is the hallmark of my business, sets apart in a highly competitive industry. “I never want to seem too busy for customers,” I set the example of personal attention thats what I demand of everyone who works in my organization. Despite a hectic schedule, I make it a point to attend most services we conduct, whether I know the deceased or not, acknowledging the family, and presenting a plaque in memory of their loved one.
With the philosophy that a funeral service is more a celebration of life than a mourning of loss. I have developed a widely recognized signature style that is uniquely Serenity. Michael mind drifted to images of Victorian-era pall bearers (Funeral Directors of Serenity) in top hats and fne-dining servers in London with white gloves. He will incorporated those features into the Serenity “signature package,” It’s all designed to give the family a memorable experience.
