‘Fantastic Four’ all set for the Davis Cup tie ‘SUPER By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE stage is set for the American Zone II Davis Cup tie this weekend at the Doral Park Country Club in Miami, Florida. The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association has already sent its fourmember team off as they wind down their preparation to take on Venezuela in what is their home venue. Venezuela opted to play the tie in Miami instead of Venezuela because of the civil unrest there. When the event takes place from Friday to Sunday, top seed Spencer Newman, No.2 seed Philip Major Jr, player/captain Marvin Rolle and No.4 seed Justin Lunn will represent the Bahamas. They will face the team of Ricardo Rodriguez, Luis David Martinez, Jordi Munoz-Abreu and Miguel Angel Este.

Yohny Romero will serve as Venezuela’s captain. While none of the Bahamian players have any ATP rankings, Venezuela’s top three players do. Rodriguez is listed at No.779 in singles and 923 in doubles; Martinez is pegged at 1237 in singles and 243 in doubles and Munoz-Abreu is 1265 in singles and 316 in doubles. At the end of the tournament, which will comprise of best-of-five set singles and doubles, the winner will advance to the second round over the weekend of April 7-9 to play the winner between Bolivia and El Salvador to either remain in zone II for 2018 or go on to play for promotion to zone one for 2018

in the third round September 15-17 at a site to be announced. The loser will play the loser between Bolivia and El Salvador over the weekend of April 7-9 with the winner remaining in zone II next year and the loser being demoted to zone III. The team of brothers Baker and Spencer Newman along with Kevin Major and Marvin Rolle as the player/captain pulled the Bahamas out of zone III last year in Bolivia. The Newman brothers pulled off impressive victories to give the Bahamas a 2-0 decision over Jamaica in the clincher. In December during the BLTA’s Annual Giorgio Baldacci National Open, Baker beat Spencer to earn the top spot, while Rolle got third and Kevin Major Jr finished fourth. However, Baker Newman was

In the late game, the CC Sweeting Cobras and the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves played in game one of the senior boys’ series, but the result was not available up to press time. The game was played just before the official opening ceremonies and after the three other divisional matches took place. In the earlier games played, the Lions opened defence of their junior girls’ title by nipping the pennant winning SC McPherson Sharks 39-38; the defending champions and pennant winning Pitbulls bite the AF Adderley Fighting Tigers 78-54 and the Mystic Marlins held off the CI Gibson Rattlers 4846. Although CC Sweeting has won the Hugh Campbell Championships, they have never won the GSSSA title. So both teams are fighting for something this year. “In the senior girls, we have CI Gibson playing for their first title too, so it’s so good to see them there. It will be interesting to see how they all finish this year. Of course, we have teams like DW Davis and HO Nash, who have proven to be tough to beat in the past, back in the junior boys’ and girls’ finals. So it’s going to be exciting to watch them.” Davis said the GSSSA got off to a pretty good start last week when they hosted the playoffs with the undefeated pennant winning CI Gibson Rattlers and the defending champions Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins both getting eliminated. By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE ‘Super Bowl’ of sailing will be held over the weekend of February 18-19 when the 30th ‘Catch Me If You Can’ St Valentine’s Massacre is held in Montagu Bay. Organiser Eleazor ‘the Sailing Barber’ Johnson said the event has grown from its initial event in 1987. “I remember when Montagu was lone bush. There was no bathroom or nothing there in those days,” Johnson said. “There was also nothing going on after the New Year’s Day Regatta and April when the National Family Island Regatta was held. “So I decided to put something together to get boats to come out to sail and we decided to do it after Valentine’s Day. It turned out to be the biggest regatta that was held in New Providence. They had something to do and they didn’t have to buy any tickets to go away on the Out Island or anything like that.” Johnson said the regatta provided an opportunity for a number of vendors to make some money as they sell their items onshore during the competition between the boats on the water. Since 1993 under Algernon Allen, then the minister of youth, sports and culture, Johnson said the Bahamas Government has come on board and assisted him financially in making the regatta a success. He also lauded Sir Durward ‘Sea Wolf’ Knowles, who came to his assistance from the inception of the regatta. Others who assisted were the Caribbean Bottling Company through its product Coca-Cola; Butler & Sands, distributors of Campari; George Myers from Paradise Island; Arlington Butler, past president of the Bahamas Olympic Committee; Leslie Miller, Member of Parliament for Tall Pines; Wallace Auto and Aquapure. Johnson said persons and companies interested in coming on board to assist in the sponsorship of the regatta are urged to contact him at 324-2946. The highlight for the regatta will be held Sunday (February 19) when Johnson’s Lady in Red, Lady Nathalie will attempt to

LOC releases ticket prices for the 3rd IAAF World Relays Bahamas

MISS BAHAMAS Cherell Williamson purchases the first ticket for the 3rd IAAF World Relays Bahamas.

THE Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 3rd IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017 has released ticket prices for the big event set for April 22-23 at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium. Single session tickets, ranging from $15 to $70, can be purchased at the stadium or online. The ticket prices for general admission are $15, silver is $40, bronze is $50 and the gold section is priced at $70. The 2017 programme includes heats and finals for the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, and the 4x800m for both men and women. Competitors will also contest a mixed gender 4x400m event.

“The competition on the track will be just as heated as the competition for these tickets,” said Jerome Sawyer, LOC director of communication. “Especially considering what will be on the line for some of these countries,” he added, The top eight finishers in the 4x100m and 4x400m earn automatic entry for the IAAF World Championships in London set for early August. Countries also compete

for the Golden Baton which is awarded to the team with the most points based on position in the finals. The United States was the Golden Baton winner in 2014 and 2015. For the third consecutive time, The Bahamas will host the IAAF World Relays, making history as one of the few countries to host three consecutive championships. The 2017 event will be included in the IAAF World Athletics Series (WAS) of

events as well. Hosting a WAS event is another historic first for The Bahamas. The LOC expects around 30,000 spectators to pack the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium over the two-day event. The stadium has a seating capacity of 15,000. More than 800 volunteers are required for the world-class showing. Tickets can be purchased at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium and online at NSA-Bahamas.com. Tickets booths are open Monday to Friday from 11am to 7 pm and on Saturdays from 11am to 4pm. WOMEN, LIKE MEN, MAKING INROADS IN THE RELAYS By LOC IAAF World Relays Bahamas 2017 WHEN it comes to athletics, The Bahamas is a nation of relays, and although it has been the men’s 4x400 metre relay that has been the cream of the crop in recent times, the women’s unit has made significant inroads. The Bahamas men’s 4x400m relay team has finished second at two successive world relays, and is gearing up for a third straight strong appearance at home this year. The women’s 4x400m relay team is optimistic about this year’s world relays, coming off two strong global appearances and a national record without its fastest runner. The Bahamas women’s 4x400m squad qualified for its first global meet in 2009, representing the country at the Berlin World Championships. Since then, The Bahamas had representation in two of the next three world championships in the women’s 4x400m, and was one of the top 16 teams making it to last year’s Olympics. The country has failed to reach the final of the event each time, but the progress made has been exemplary. Last year at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, the Bahamian quartet broke the national record, and were three spots short of making the final. Stunningly, they did it without Olympic champion in the women’s 400m, Shaunae Miller. The team of Lanece Clarke, Anthonique Strachan, Carmiesha Cox and Christine Amertil, in that order, ran a new national record time of 3:26.36, slaughtering the old national mark by over two seconds. It was the first time The Bahamas was ever represented in the women’s 4x400m at the Olympics, and they missed a spot in the final by less than a second. Hence, the optimism for this year’s International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF)

World Relay Championships, set for April 22-23, at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium. “The women’s 4x4 is coming,” said Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ (BAAA) President Rosamunde Carey. “In fact, they are already here. Those young ladies put in an awesome performance at the Olympics last year. Led by veteran Christine Amertil, they gave it their all. “A lot of those young ladies were at their first Olympics and they were jittery. They were determined to make it into the final, and they came very close to doing so. The sky is the limit for them, and Christine has vowed to come back and help them again. They are all excited and ready to go for this year’s world relays.” Amertil, 37, has represented the country at four Olympics. She has an exceptional group of quartermilers around her, and with runners like Miller, Katrina Seymour and Shaquania Dorsett added to the mix, the future looks extremely bright for the women’s 1,600m relay team. The team of Clarke, Amertil, Seymour and Miller, in that order, ran the former national record of 3:28.46 at the 2015 Beijing World Championships, and the team of Clarke, Cox, Amertil and Dorsett, in that order, ran 3:30.34 at the Blue Marlin Classic last year for the other qualifying time for the Rio

de Janeiro Olympics. They would have to finish in the top eight at the third world relays in The Bahamas this year, to automatically book their ticket for the London World Championships. According to Carey, the local programme is on the move, and it all starts at the grassroots level. They are looking to develop much more talent going forward. “The Bahamas is known for the 400 metres,” she said. “There are a number of girls coming up who will add to the relay pool, and now, they have someone like Shaunae, the Olympic champion, to look up to. Shaunae wasn’t able to assist the girls last year because of the fall in the 400m final, but she will be a part of the team this year. Also, Christine said that as long as she is healthy, she will assist, and Katrina is looking very good. Shaquania is there as well, so there are a number of girls who could contribute. “The goal is to have them qualify for the world championships at the world relays right here at home, and if that doesn’t happen, we have the Penn Relays right after that. We have to get all of our teams qualified. We have a training camp planned 10 days before the world relays so that they could work on their synergy and be ready. Also, we have relay coordinators who are very experienced – veteran coaches have stepped forward and are prepared to work with them.”

There is now less than 100 days before the staging of the third IAAF World Relay Championships, here in The Bahamas. Once again, the host nation is expected to field teams in at least six of the nine events – the men and women’s 4x100m relays, the men and women’s 4x200m relays, and the men and women’s 4x400m relays. There is a chance that the country will field a team in the mixed 4x400m relay as well, which is new to the world relays calendar this year. “We are getting commitment from all of our athletes for the world relays,” said Carey. “We’re so excited about it. The team is working hard to ensure that this comes off, and that The Bahamas is well represented. To have this event come here again is truly historic. The LOC (local organising committee of the world relays) brought in some new blood this year, and now there is much more depth, and the team will be able to gain experience.” All three of the world relays have been held in The Bahamas, making the event truly significant. Rarely is any IAAF sporting event hosted in the same city and country on three successive occasions, particularly the first three editions of a global event such as the world relays. In addition, the 2019 world relays are set for The Bahamas as well. “Now that we have this event in our backyard

He said the event “brings out the best of the best” sailing sloops to

compete. “I expect atleast 50,000 people to come out over that weekend for the regatta,” he said. “Montagu is now fixed up. It looks a lot much better than it was 30 years ago when we held the first regatta. “So the people don’t have to worry. They are going to be in a very safe environment. There’s going to be a lot for them to do and they can bring their children too because we will have a kiddie’s corner for them to enjoy. We will have lots of giveaways each day.”

In the 30 years that the ‘Catch Me If You Can’ race has been held, the B Class Lady Nathalie has a 16-14 advantage over her A class challengers. The Lady Nathalie is normally given a head start in the

2-3 laps race and the objection is to get to the finish line before she is caught. “The Red Stripe is the closest to me. I can’t lie down on her. She’s a very fast boat,” Johnson said. “She’s very tricky. But I have a good crew and they work hard to make sure that we don’t get catch.” In addition to the ‘Catch Me If You Can’ race, on Saturday the fans will get a chance to see at least eight of the top C Class boats compete in a three-race series. BOA CONDOLENCES BAHAMAS Olympic Committee president Wellington Miller extended condolences on behalf of the BOC to the family, friends and sporting associates of the late Roosevelt ‘Starter’ Thompson who died on Sunday. Thompson was part of the management team of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India and a longtime sports administrator and enthusiast. “‘Starter’, as we affectionately called him, showed great respect and had great relationships with all athletes and sports managers,” Miller said. “He was always pressing us to do better. He was a great fan and booster of all sports, particularly track and field. “He was one of those who shouldered the burden of improving sports in The Bahamas.” Miller said he believes that all organisations that Thompson belonged to will surely miss his wise counsel, his friendship and his loyalty. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

This year, our goal is to get all four of our relay teams qualified for the world championships, and we’re confident we could do that.” The only global meet in which The Bahamas was able to qualify all four relay teams was the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia. Carey is confident that they could duplicate that at the London World Championships this year, and in order to do so, she said that it is imperative that they have a good showing at the world relays, particularly with it being held here in The Bahamas once again.

Kevin Major Jr just enrolled at Seminole State Junior College in Oklahoma and he was not able to make the trip to Miami, so Justin Lunn, who finished sixth in the tournament, replaced Major Jr. The Bahamas, currently ranked at No. 75 in the world, holds a 5-2 advantage in their head-to-head match-up against Venezuela, who is now ranked at No.44. In their last meeting in 2008 at the National Tennis Centre, the Bahamas won 4-1 in the first round of the American II tie. The Bahamas also won 3-1 in Venezuela in 1999 in the American Zone One final; 3-2 at the Nassau Beach Hotel in 1997 in the Group One first round; 5-0 in Caracas, Venezuela in 1992 in the Group II final and 5-0 at the Wyndham Beach Tennis Center in 1989 in Group II first round. Watford dents Arsenal title hopes with shock 2-1 victory LONDON (AP) — Watford dealt a major blow to Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes as it secured a surprise 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium yesterday. Early strikes from Younes Kaboul and Troy Deeney gave Watford a deserved 2-0 halftime lead before Alex Iwobi pulled a goal back for Arsenal after the break. Watford withstood heavy pressure in the final stages to hold on for its first victory in eight Premier League games and consign Arsenal to a first home defeat since the opening day of the season. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who watched from the stands as he served the second of a four-game touchline ban, said that attributing his side’s poor start to his absence would be an “easy excuse”. “It was not good in the first half, especially the first 20 minutes, we were beaten in the duels, they were sharper than us,” Wenger said.

“I’m very frustrated that we did not win the game. We played at home and we had a great opportunity. We have to learn from that and respond very quickly.” Title-chasing Tottenham held 0-0 by struggling Sunderland SUNDERLAND, England (AP) — Tottenham’s pursuit of Premier League leader Chelsea was frustrated by a 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Sunderland on Tuesday, missing an opportunity to seize on its title rivals dropping points. On a night when Sunderland’s organisation and determination was enough to keep misfiring Tottenham at bay, Son Heung-min looked the player most likely to make the difference. The Tottenham forward was energetic and came as close as anyone to opening up Sunderland on a frustrating night for Tottenham, striking just clear of the crossbar in the second half after setting up Victor Wanyama’s header.

an opportunistic free kick from David Luiz in the 24th minute as Chelsea took the lead against the run of play at Anfield on Tuesday. Georginio Wijnaldum equalised for Liverpool in the 57th before Mignolet made amends for his firsthalf mistake, guessing the right way to turn Diego Costa’s penalty around the post in the 76th.

Palace beats Bournemouth 2-0 for 1st win under Allardyce BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Crystal Palace earned its first Premier League victory under new manager Sam Allardyce with a 2-0 win for the relegation strugglers at Bournemouth on Tuesday. Both sides laboured in the first half as the rain came down at the Vitality Stadium but Scott Dann broke the deadlock just a minute after the restart, firing home from close range following a corner. Bournemouth had the majority of the possession in the second half but Palace doubled its lead in injury time when Christian Benteke headed home. The win was Allaryce’s first in the league at his sixth attempt. Palace stayed in the drop zone, in 18th place, and is two points from safety.

Burnley inflicts Leicester’s 3rd Premier League loss in row BURNLEY, England (AP) — Burnley condemned Leicester to a third successive Premier League loss on Tuesday, beating the ailing champions 1-0 through Sam Vokes’ late goal. Vokes struck from close range in the 87th minute to secure Burnley’s seventh successive win at Turf Moor in all competitions and fifth in the league. Replays suggested Vokes could have controlled the ball with his arm before shooting. Leicester is two points above the relegation zone in

slotting home the resulting penalty. Middlesbrough, which is winless in six games, is two points clear of the relegation zone after 23 games.

Middlesbrough rallies for 1-1 draw vs West Brom in EPL MIDDLESBROUGH, England (AP) — Middlesbrough came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion and claim a point in its fight for survival in the Premier League on Tuesday. West Brom went ahead when former Middlesbrough midfielder James Morrison lashed home from 20 yards in the sixth minute. The hosts equalised in the 17th after Gareth McAuley needlessly brought down Martin de Roon in the area, with Alvaro Negredo

the league it won so unexpectedly last season. Burnley is eight points better off in ninth place.
