Bahamian pastor installed as first female overseer of Missouri-based Lively Stone Fellowship of Churches International By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net
M
EMBERS of the Lively Stone Church of God are in celebration mode as they prepare for the upcoming installation of Bahamian Pastor Angela Rolle as an overseer in the Lively Stone Fellowship of Churches International. The investiture service is open to all members of the public and will take place tomorrow, Friday, February 2, at 7 pm, at the Lively Stone Church on Knowles Drive off Tonique Williams Darling Highway, New Providence. In an interview with Tribune Religion, Pastor Rolle said her new role as overseer will help strengthen the presence of the Lively Stone Church of God in the Bahamas. Her position moving forward is to look for new avenues to share the gospel, all while supporting local churches and the organisation. “This is an international fellowship, and so I will be the first one (overseer) here in the Bahamas. The position is usually held by men. In this whole fellowship, I will be the first woman to be installed as an overseer. I am happy as a woman to let other women know that we can do anything through Christ who strengthens us. Being motivated
to work doesn’t have a gender; you just have to say, ‘I can do it’. Whatever the male can do, you as a female can do it as well. And when when we go to do it, do it to the very best of our ability,” said Pastor Rolle. The International Fellowship is shepherded by Presiding Bishop Lee Scott with headquarters in St Louis, Missouri. Last June, Bishop Scott presided over Pastor Rolle’s transfer to the office of overseer. At Pastor Rolle’s request the investiture service is being conducted here in the Bahamas in the presence of and with the support of her church family. This will be the first investiture service held outside of the continental United States for the fellowship. Bishop Scott told the 2023 Convocation attendees that he considers Pastor Rolle to be a natural leader, and a strong woman who has been faithful in enduring the test of time. Pastor Rolle is a retired civil servant, widow, and mother to four adult children, and grandmother to three grandchildren. She said her upbringing and instruction by her grandmother, the late Marjorie Dorsett in New Bight, Cat Island, taught her all about the discipline and tenacity which have shaped her life’s walk. “Being installed as an overseer in the fellowship has propelled me to know that I just got to be
focused and give God my very best,” said Pastor Rolle. “Too many times we become laid back and just throw things at God, and that is not the way it’s supposed to be. We are to give Him our very best, because guess what, He gives us His very best; we are His children. So when we go before Him to represent Him, we should give it to Him and that is exactly what I have been doing over the years.” She said she feels humbled and happy that as a woman and as a Christian she is able to stand as an ambassador for Christ and be an example to other people - not only women - but the church in general, to let them know that there is still work to be done, and the only thing needed is to be committed, to stay focused and let God do the rest. “I have been a part of the Highway Church of God here in the Bahamas from I was 12 years old. It was in 1998 we met the Lively Stone Fellowship International, and we became partners and friends. So I have been a part of them from that time in 1998,” she explained. “This Friday, I am looking to have my friends, my family, as well as my church family, persons from the Family Islands...pastors in Great Harbour Cay, Freeport, and in Long Island, coming to be with me. I am looking for a great time of fellowship with the

international brothers and sisters who will also be coming in from St Louis, Missouri,” she said. Moving forward, Pastor Rolle assured readers that the church’s doors are always open. “We want to leave no child or no person behind, as we want to lead in a spirit of excellence. Our motto this year is we are walking the walk and talking the talk, so to do that calls for demonstration. We want to demonstrate the walk and the talk and what Christ expects from us. So we are inviting people to come out this Friday and share with us, get to know us, and whatever your needs may be, however we can help, just let us know and we are ready, able and willing to do it in the name of the Lord,” said Pastor Rolle. The Lively Stone Church Bahamas celebrated its 25th anniversary and Pastor Rolle’s 10th pastoral anniversary in 2023. The church has enjoyed a strong fellowship with its international partners since 1998. The church maintains a fruitful fellowship with the Highway Church of God Bahamas which is lead by Bishop Denzcil Rolle. Pastor Angela Rolle continues the rich Christian heritage of the church’s founders and founding pastor, the late Bishop Godfrey Hepburn. Alphonso Scott and oversees fellowship with churches and organisations in the US, Haiti, Africa and the Bahamas. The fellowship has strengthened its resolve to work with its Bahamian partners and to further embrace the vision of the late Bishops Alphonso Scott and Godfrey Hepburn for expansion and impact all to the honour and glory of God.

Gospel artist embarks on school tour to ‘Stop the Violence’ By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
A
local gospel music artist is doing his part to fight the rise in violent crime in the Bahamas by striving to be a positive role model and discouraging young people from engaging in acts in violence. Apostle Leroy Butler of Kingdom World Ministries International, formerly of the Baha Men, is hoping his “The Blood of Jesus: Stop the Violence” school tour will reach as many young people as possible and touch their lives. He has invited a number of gospel artists to join him in embarking on this tour, which will be kicking off this month. During the school tour, the artists will perform positive music and share their unique testimonies with students. Apostle Butler feels the wave of violence happening in schools stems from a
number of different issues. However, lack of a spiritual journey and Christian principles, he believes, are at the heart of the negative activities many young people find themselves involved with. “When the Holy Spirit dropped the idea of the school tour in my spirit He gave it to me in phases. The first phase was for us to hit the schools. He said to me school has just started there is so much violence and there is just too many things going on with young people,” he told Tribune Religion. “Then the Lord gave me the name ‘The Blood of Jesus: Stop the Violence’. In the spirit what He is saying is that there is too much blood shed. But when you hear ‘The Blood of Jesus: Stop The Violence’ campaign it is all about the blood of Jesus and the blood that He shed. It is his blood he shed for life. His blood was shed to bring life
not for us to take life away. It was shed for our sins.” The main objective of the upcoming school tour, Apostle Butler said, is for each of the participating gospel music artists to reach someone with their story. “We have been doing things already as gospel
ministers. Why it is so important and powerful for us to come together in this way is because we all have a story. We all have testament,” he said. “Even before ‘The Stop The Violence’ tour we had other programmes going on where we went out into
the streets with Apostle Henry Higgins and their programme. We hit the road, we pray, sing and we do outreach. To me, I feel it is effective because music for the young people is very powerful. If you listen to (a certain) type of music…it is really not good.” Helping bring change to the life of young people, Apostle Butler said, requires an all-hands-ondeck approach. “People may say how will this campaign stop violence. Violence comes from different problems. If we all play our part we can stop someone from going down that path; we all can stop someone from going down that wrong path. We won’t be able to stop everyone, but everyone of us has a part to play,” he said. “We have seen the power of music and the power of us speaking and our testimony has. Even if the campaign reaches one, we would have done our jobs.”
Apostle Butler said simply showing young people that there is a better or alternative life to violence can sometimes go a long way. “If a gang man approaches them and says, ‘Hey, this is a way out’, and no one else is doing this or showing them a different avenue then what do you really want them to do? That is the only way and only door that people are showing them. If someone says to them, ‘Hey, this is a better way…you can make your own money; you can be your own boss you could be a songwriter’, then they will re-think it all,” he said. Apostle Butler, who is a former band member of Baha Men, usually tells his story to those he encounters during outreach activities. ‘I always tell my story. I came from Kemp Road but I was able to travel all around the world with a Grammy-award winning band,” he said.
ANGLICAN DIOCESE FOCUSES ON ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP FOR LENT AND BEYOND THE Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands will hold its Lenten Mission 2024 under the theme “For the Beauty of the Earth – Environmental Stewardship in the 21st Century.” The Lenten Mission takes place in four locations across the Diocese beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 14, and continuing through Monday, February 26. Here are the locations: 1. February 14 – 19

23rd Boys Brigade Company of St Barnabas Parish celebrates annual ‘Boys to Men’ prayer breakfast
Lenten Mission is also the Diocese’s theme for 2024. The theme, the Diocese explained, was chosen because the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands are small-island states heavily impacted by climate change like so many states across the globe. Events such as hurricanes, and the gradual warming of waters, which affects plant and animal life, etcetera, are having devastating effects. “This is a reality that will continue to affect the planet more and more in the future. “God made this earth and God saw that it was good (Genesis 1:1, 31). A part of our basic Christian duty is taking care of creation and ensuring that it lasts for as long as possible. “The Lenten Mission will challenge hearers to think more seriously about God during Lent and to get their spiritual houses in order, to draw closer to God and to love our sisters and brothers more. The Mission will also call us to be faithful to God’s mandate to care for this earth now and to preserve it for future generations. Please join in praying for our Missioner and for the upcoming Lenten Mission 2024.”
MOST Bahamians are probably unaware of the annual Brigade ‘Boys to Men’ and its origins. It is actually an expression of civic pride that allows the young men in the Boys Brigade to adopt genuine healthy lifestyles for their future trek through the world. This year, the breakfast event showcased one the young men who grew in the parish of St Barnabas nad who found his spiritual footing in the church. Dr Akin A Minnis, an orthopedic surgeon, was the facilitator and presenter. This event is solely funded and organised by the rank and file of the 23rd Company of the Boys Brigade. Octogenarian Captain Henry Curry II felt that the beginning of the year is the perfect time to conduct this training and teaching session for young men. For the breakfast, Dr Minnis tackled the topic “Bone Health, and Why it is Important”. His presentation was inspired by the Creation Story. He explained

to the inquiring minds that healthy bones begin forming in the womb and continue to develop after birth and into adulthood. He posited that most babies begin their lives with the daily prerequisite of milk which contains Vitamin A, Vitamin D and calcium. He explained that Vitamin A promotes growth and is crucial for perfect vision, healthy skin, and a healthy immune system. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium, which enables and sustains strong healthy bones and teeth. Calcium can be found primarily in cod liver oil and milk, and helps build strong bones and teeth, and reduces the risk of stress fractures and osteoporosis which affect many senior citizens later in life, he said. Dr Minnis said bone health is in “good standing” in the Bahamas on average, “so we are... thankful in the overall status of our primary bone health.” He still strongly encouraged the young men to eat healthy, exercise and stay away from alcohol and smoking.
