Training the prayer warriors By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

R

AISING up a generation of prayer warriors and intercessors continues to be a major goal for Prayer Works International. Its latest training session was an effort to inspire believes to prayer more especially given the “troubling times we are living in”. Prayer Works International in conjunction with the Bahamas Intercessors Desk and the Church of

God of Prophecy, hosted its latest Intercessors Training dubbed “Victorious Fasting Visions Dreams”. The session began at 9am and was opened by Minister Patrice Bain, who opened the event sharing about the import and power of prayer. The song “I’m Expecting Great Things” was sung and the prayer said by Intercessory Leader of GLH, Deacon Melvin Lundy. This session was facilitated by Minister Patrice Bain and Minister Linda Baker. Elder Kaynell Gould, lead Intercessor of the

Embassy International, shared the breakthroughs and miracles she received as a result of fasting. “Many were encouraged to be consistent in their fastings and to allow the flesh to be broken to bring honour to God. Pastor Terrance Forbes presented on the sub topic The Benefits of Fasting,” Minister Patrice Bain of Prayer Works International said. Sometimes it can be challenge to be consistent in prayer, however prayer she said is the bedrock of a Christian’s spiritual and constant communication

with God is necessary always. “There are five paramounts of spiritual discipline. They are: prayer, Bible study meditation, fasting and service. Fasting promotes blood sugar levels, better health and reduces inflammation. We were encouraged to study the life of Hanna, who fasted and prayed and received many children after being barren for years; in addition, Daniel who experienced the miracle in the lion’s den,” she said. Dr Ingrid Johnson, of Bahamas Faith Ministries

International, shared on the Prophet Daniel, the dreamer and interpreter and Esther who led her people into fastings. “A powerful word was spoken over the attendees and the church, declaring financial blessings and the word. The Prophecy was taken from Amos 9:13-15, Joel 2:25-27 and Haggai 2:9. Every word spoken was received by all. We give thanks to God who will continue to bless his people. A question and answer period followed.” Minister Patrice encouraged all to pursue that

Holy Spirit ACW celebrates Golden Jubilee FIFTY years ago, on January 28, 1974, the parish hall of Holy Spirit Anglican Church was bustling with excitement as women gathered to start the Anglican Church Women (ACW) organisation of Holy Spirit Parish upon the request of then rector, Rev Glendon Brant. On Sunday, January 28, this year, all dressed in white with their red corsages on, officers and members of Holy Spirit ACW celebrated their Golden Jubilee with a service of thanksgiving. Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Island, the Rt Rev Laish Boyd, was in attendance and delivered the sermon. The theme for the occasion was “ACW Sisters Sharing Love and Compassion for 50 Years as Servants of God". “Fifty years as an organisation means that the ACW is one that is built on commitment, dedication and faithfulness. Fifty years means that we are living our purpose of service, spreading God's word, in more than just word, but

in action,” said Deborah McKinney, president of Holy Spirit ACW. During the service, living founding members were honored by the women’s organisation. The honorees included Catherine Glinton, Agatha Beckles, Joan Powell, Juanita NairnGrant, Francis Louise Gibson, Angela Turnquest, Louise Simmons and Elizabeth Sweeting. Mrs Sweeting, who attended the church from she was three years old and grew-up across the street from the church, said that “Holy Spirit has always been a part of my life. I enjoy coming to church and ACW.” She has held the position of treasurer several times in the ACW and still remains a faithful member. Mrs Louise Gibson said “I felt very good” on being honoured. She said she takes her church very seriously. She was sure to mention that she worships at Holy Spirit on Wednesdays and Sundays. Mrs Nairn-Grant, who was only 20 when the branch was formed, thought she was too young to join. With encouragement from

her aunt, Hazel Darling, she was one of the women who attended that meeting some 50 years ago. “Holy Spirit ACW has played a very important part in my life. It has allowed me to share ministry and fellowship with the members of Holy Spirit ACW and the other ACW branches throughout the diocese,” said Mrs Nairn-Grant The women of Holy Spirit ACW do not just dress up in their pretty white dresses on a Sunday morning, but they are involved in improving the lives of many in their church and community. They had a “ACW On Da Blocks” event where persons were able to get giveaways of clothing and shoes for adults and children. The response was very good, that persons left loaded with giveaways in bags and even suitcases. In today’s society, there are a lot of people who are plagued by hunger. The ACW does its part in trying to eliminate hunger by having a monthly soup kitchen, where persons can get something hot to eat.

In order to groom the future women of the church, the organisation formed a “Girls’ Chit N Chat” where young ladies, between the ages of 12 to 17, are mentored by the women of the ACW. The programme serves as a safe space for the young ladies

to express their thoughts. They are also instructed in home economics such as sewing and cooking. As Holy Spirit ACW forges ahead toward the next 50 years, they are filled with a future full of hope and God’s continual guidance.

vision or dream that God has given to them in this year 2024. “To obey is better than sacrifice. Write the vision and make it plain upon the tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak and not lie; though it tarry wait for it, because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Habakkuk 2:2. If you believe it, you shall receive it.” Prayers were offered for everyone present. “I see Holy Spirit branch continuing to live the vision and mission of the ACW Ministry. We will do this by focusing on mentorship with the young ladies of the parish and the community, continue to build the sisterhood within the ACW and finding ways to meaningfully impact the lives of persons who are in need,” said Ms McKinney.
