rainy night cleared up just long enough for the Bahamas to secure their third win and claim the top spot in Group A of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer World Championships. Lesly St Fleur continued his offensive dominance in the tournament with another hat trick and powered the Bahamas to a 3-2 win over Jamaica in last night’s finale at the national beach soccer stadium. Tied 2-2 for much of the third, St Fleur drew an interference call when he attempted a bicycle kick and was awarded a free kick. His strike sailed by the outstretched arms of Jamaican Krik Porter for the Bahamas’ go ahead score with 2:45 left to play. After dominant performances in their first two matches of the draw, Jamaica presented the toughest test for the Bahamas. After finishing first in Group A, the Bahamas will now have to wait for the quarter-final draw - hosted at the conclusion of tonight’s final game - to learn their next opponent. “Beach soccer is a fun sport so each team you play it’s going to get tougher and tougher so you just have to go out there with a mindset that you’re going to play hard,” St Fleur said. “It doesn’t matter who we play

PRIME Minister Perry Christie makes an entrance last night. next, we just have to go out there and play hard, get to the semis and take our shot at the final. “We just have to go out there and represent the country with pride. We know it’s going to get tougher and tougher and go out there and have some fun and win while doing that.” Veteran national team member Nesley Jean was key on the defensive end, stifling numerous opportunities for Jamaica in the third period. “Defence comes first. I’m just happy everyone is playing together and I’m proud of these guys,” he said. “It’ll always be a rivalry between us and Jamaica. Jamaica’s

a very good team and we have played them numerous times, but they have improved and we have improved, we were able to come out on top this time. Jean said the team is prepared for whoever they face in the next round. “Whoever comes out of the draw comes, we are prepared. We are ready and we are going to give it all for the country,” he said. “I’m glad Bahamians are coming out and watching the games. The more they come out the more we can show them about the sport.” In the first third, Bahamian midfielder Gary Joseph was shaken up early on and after an interference call,

He drove home what an enthusiastic crowd thought was the first goal, however it was called back due to encroachment by a Bahamian player. Bahamian goalkeeper Ivan Rolle again had an impressive game in the net for the home team. After the Bahamas was

called for a four-second penalty, Jamaica’s Rohan Reid was awarded a free kick that was just deflected by Rolle to keep the game scoreless. The Bahamas also missed several opportunities to add to their lead highlighted by team captain Gavin Christie’s shot which deflected

just off the right post and they took a 1-0 lead into the second. Jamaica scored the equaliser on the second possession of the second period with Reid’s shot at the 11th minute. Dameion Benjamin took the lead for Jamaica with his goal at the 2:51 mark but St Fleur would score almost immediately at the 2:14 mark when he beat the keeper to tie the game for the Bahamas headed into the third. In the early moments of the third period, St Fleur left a shot short for what looked like the certain go ahead score. Rolle’s saves and Jean’s effort on the defensive end highlighted the third for the Bahamas before St Fleur’s late-game heroics. Benjamin was called for a yellow card to place the tournament’s leading scorer in scoring position. In other matches on the day, Trinidad and Tobago defeated the USVI 5-1, the USA defeated Antigua and Barbuda 7-2, Panama and El Salvador drew 4-4, Guyana defeated Belize 4-1 and Costa Rica defeated the Turks and Caicos 8-2. After a day off today, the Bahamas will return to the pitch in the quarter-final round on Friday.

Buddy: ‘I’m ready to go and put on for Sacramento’ By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net BUDDY Hield said he was faced with a feeling of uncertainty when he got the news that he was traded so early into his NBA career, but the reception he received from fans at the Sacramento International Airport brought what he called “a sense of peace.” Scores of Kings fans greeted Hield with “Buddy” chants when he arrived at his new NBA home on Tuesday. “It feels great. Everybody embracing me like this, I feel like I want to be here now. I didn’t know what to expect when I got off the plane, but to see all of these fans cheering my name it gives me a sense of peace and I’m ready to go and put on for Sacramento,” he said to a group of reporters upon arrival in Sacramento. The former New Orleans Pelican was one of the principals in a trade, packaged along with Tyreke Evans, Langston Gallo-

way, a future 2017 first-round and second-round pick to Sacramento in exchange for All-Star centre DeMarcus Cousins and Omri Casspi. “I was kind of in shock. There was uncertainty, I didn’t know what to expect, but I know God doesn’t make mistakes so I’m here for a reason,” he said. “I’m ready to take Sacramento to higher heights. They traded for me, they traded a big piece of their team for me so I know that I have to come and put on and give Sacramento my all. I know it’s not easy but I’m going to put a lot in, be a hard worker and try to get everybody together to move forward toward championships.” Hield is averaging 8.6 points, 1.4 assist and 2.9 rebounds during the 57-game stretch for the Pelicans this season. He’s shooting 39.2 per cent from the field overall but is hitting from three at a decent rate - 37 per cent. Hield’s productive month of December was recognised by the NBA when he was named the

BUDDY HIELD Western Conference Rookie of the Month after he led the conference’s rookies in scoring (10.6 points), three-point field goal percentage (48 per cent) and threepointers made (33). He is currently ranked fourth among rookies in scoring. Hield will be expected to be a major component of a rebuilding young core for the Kings which will

include 2015 lottery pick Willie Cauley-Stein, last year’s first round draft pick Skal Labissiere and the future picks in 2017. “They see a vision in me, but I’m always going to be Buddy out there. That’s got me here. I’ve worked hard since I was a little boy and that’s what I’m going to continue to do. I worked hard to get to Oklahoma and I’m going to work my but off to be the player I want to be and be the player I need to become. I’s going to be a tough task night in, night out but I’m built for it,” he said. “Everyone wants to be that guy, be that leader for the team. I’m not shy in the moment, I’m willing to take pressure, but that’s what comes with it when you put that work in and people trust you, you trust yourself and they know what you’re capable of doing. I’m ready for the challenge.” Hield will make his Kings debut tonight when they host the Denver Nuggets at 10:30pm local time. Kings head coach Dave Joerger

said it would be a quick turnaround for Buddy and the other new additions to the roster as the rebuilding begins in the postCousins era. “We’ll try to get them up to speed on some of what we try to do offensively and defensively and how things might fit together. I’ve watched him [Hield] a little bit. He made a lot of shots in college and he seemed like a very good prospect coming out. I haven’t seen him much this year, I’ve seen him twice, and we just played them last week so I haven’t seen a lot of him a lot professionally.” The Kings currently have a logjam at the shooting guard spot with seven players listed at the position on the current roster, including Hield, Evans, Galloway, Aaron Afflalo, Ben McLemore, Garrett Temple and Malachi Richardson. “Right now we have seven shooting guards,” Joeger said when asked about Temple’s health status.“I think we’re okay at shooting guard.”

34TH HUGH CAMPBELL BASKETBALL CLASSIC FOR SENIOR BOYS

‘Embracing Success Through Sports and Teamwork’ VISITING TEAMS FROM GRAND BAHAMA, FAMILY ISLANDS DOMINATE AS TOURNAMENT OFFICIALLY TIPS OFF AT THE AF ADDERLEY GYMNASIUM By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE games began on Monday but the country’s longest standing high school basketball tournament officially tipped off in grand style yesterday at the AF Adderley Gymnasium. This year’s tournament is hosted under the theme “Embracing Success Through Sports and Teamwork.” Theophilus Claridge, principal of AF Adderley, said the theme was derived from a need to achieve both on and off the court. “Excellence means that we aspire to be outstanding; we strive to be the best we can be. Each team participating in this year’s classic has demonstrated excellence. They have lived the words of the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle when he said the words stated in our opening quote, ‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.’ They have developed excellence by developing the habit of excellence,” he said. “From its inception, the Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic has strived to portray excellence in basketball. As we continue to promote excellence in the sporting arena, we must also promote excellence in academics and in character development.” The programme included performances from students representing a diverse selection of schools, highlighted by a rendition of “Bahama Rock” from the Tigers’ band. To commemorate the event, the colourful ceremony also included the parade of colours from the RBDF Rangers, performances from the CR Walker Dancers, the CR Walker School Band along with the athletes, coaches and referees pledge. Several dignitaries were on hand from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the tour-

nament’s organising committee also honoured event sponsors and paid special recognition to the family of the tournament’s namesake, the late Hugh Campbell – one of the country’s iconic educators. The double elimination format tournament is slated to run through Monday when the championship game will be played at the Kendal Isaacs Gym. The visiting teams from Grand Bahama and the Family Islands dominated the schedule yesterday. Gateway Christian Academy out of Bimini easily survived a nailbiter to defeat the Eight Mile Rock Blue Jays 41-40 in the first game. Bradley Lightbourn scored nine of his game high 20 points at the line and led just five Gateway players who reached the scoreboard. He also finished with a double double and added 10 rebounds. Denzel Jones scored 12 and Cavon Dames chipped in with six. Delano Dean led the Blue Jays with 18 points and Devon Williams scored eight. In the second game of the session, the Jack Hayward Wildcats dominated the Aquinas College Aces 44-21. The Wildcats opened the game on a 14-3 run and led wire-to-wire en route to the win. Tremaine Ferguson scored nine while Clevon Clarke added seven for the Wildcats. Kriston Clarke led the Aces with seven. In the final game of session one, the Government High Magic blew away the NCA Crusaders 52-20. Pedro Knowles led the Magic with 14 points and five steals, Mario Narin scored 11, Samuel Gibson and Justin LaRose each scored eight and Terrion Kemp grabbed a game high 12 rebounds. The tournament continues 10am today in the AF Adderley Gymnasium with

the first of three sessions. In 2016, the CC Sweeting Cobras captured their fifth title in school history with a 55-54 win over the Sunland Baptist Stingers. The programme has won four titles under current head coach Mario Bowleg (2012-13, 2015-16) and one under Ian Pinder (2007). The Tabernacle Baptist Falcons, under head coach, Norris Bain, still hold the record of having won the title six times (1995-96, 1998, 2000, 2009-10). Bain has stepped aside as Kevin Clarke now mans the helm for the Falcons. He issued a statement in the tournament’s official media guide on the honour of being the most successful coach in tournament history. “I must first give thanks to the Almighty God for

providing the wisdom and understanding to give back to the most precious commodity of our country, our young men. Secondly, I would not have achieved this success that I have achieved in this tournament without my mentors in this discipline, Mr Charles Mackey and Gladstone “Moon” McPhee, who have been trailblazers in high school basketball in the Bahamas,” Bain said. “As far as being the ‘winningest’ coach in Hugh Campbell history, it is quite an honour. Remember, records are made to be broken. I passed legendary coach Gladstone ‘Moon’ McPhee and some day, I know, some outstanding Bahamian will take this to greater heights, and my hold as the winningest coach will be history.”

The Rattlers and coach Johnson are close behind with five (2002, 2004-2006 and 2014), while Catholic High has also won it five times, three times under Gladstone ‘Moon’ McPhee (1983, 1989 and 1991) and twice under Charlie ‘Softly’ Robins (1999 and 2003). The initial tournament, which was only played between the New Providence schools, in 1982 was won by the LW Young Golden Eagles, coached then by Walter Rand with Bernard Storr as the MVP. The next year, the Grand Bahama teams joined and McPhee and the Crusaders with Ben Russell as the MVP won their first title in 1983. The other tournament winners were LW Young, coached by Walter Rand and led by MVP Bernard

Storr, as the initial champions in 1992, Sir Jack Hawyard Wildcats, coached by Ivan Butler in 2001, RM Bailey Pacers, coached by Nigel Ingraham, in 2011, Eight Mile Rock Bluejays, coached by Gary McIntosh in 1985 and 1990, CR Walker Knights, coached by Jimmy Clarke in 1997 and Trevor Grant in 2008 and the host AF Adderley Fighting Tigers, coached by Doug Collins, back-to-back in 1987 and 1988 before they became a junior high school, but continue to host the invitational tournament as their major fundraiser. No Family Island or BAISS school has ever won the tournament, which was cancelled once in 1986 because of a dispute with the teachers that eventually led to the formation of the GSSSA and the BAISS. A tournament rich in history and traditionally hosted at the AF Adderley Gymnasium returned to the school’s campus in 2014 following a five-year hiatus.

Sudden impact: Subs give Juventus 2-0 CL win at 10-man Porto PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Two substitutes, two goals, one clever coach. Struggling to break through 10-man FC Porto in the Champions League Round-of-16 match, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri resorted to two second-half substitutes who quickly scored as the Italian champions won 2-0 yesterday. Marko Pjaca and Dani Alves broke through with goals in the 72nd and 74th minutes of the first leg to give Juventus a commanding advantage. Porto had held out since Alex Telles was sent off in the 27th after two rash fouls. Juventus hemmed Porto in its area and Pjaca scored five minutes after coming on. Allegri then sent Alves on and he was even quicker in finding the net — two minutes after joining the game. “We hit twice in quick succession when they got tired, exactly as Allegri

told us to do,” said Juventus midfielder Miralem Pjanic. “He kept telling us to stay calm and serene and wait for the right moment because it would certainly arrive.” Also Wednesday, Sevilla beat Leicester 2-1 in Spain with goals by Pablo Sarabia and Joaquin Correa in each half. Jamie Vardy struck late to give the English visitors a valuable away goal. Porto’s Telles was sent off after the left back cut down Stephan Lichtsteiner, just two minutes after a yellow card for his studs-first tackle on Juan Cuadrado’s heel. Porto manager Nuno Espirito Santo took off striker Andre Silva, who has scored five goals in the competition this season, and restructured his defense with Miguel Layun. The visitors slowly but surely pressed Porto into its box before Paulo Dybala’s long strike smacked the base of the post in first-half injury time. Hector Herrera mus-

But Juventus quickly restored its control and shots from Dybala and Sami Khedira followed.

Layun was at fault in Pjaca’s goal when he deflected Dybala’s pass to the Croatian midfielder inside the box. Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas had made an earli-

er save to frustrate Gonzalo Higuain, but the Spaniard could do nothing to stop Alves when he received a cross from Alex Sandro at close range. While the former Real

Madrid ‘keeper had a busy night for the hosts, Casillas’ counterpart Gianluigi Buffon barely had to intervene at the Estadio do Dragao stadium. The two veteran ‘keepers embraced after the final whistle of their 17th career meeting. “The tie is much more difficult now, but it is not over,” said Porto’s Espirito Santo. Allegri was saying much the same. “Porto defended in its half, but my players played well. They had patience and knew when to score in the right moment,” Allegri said. “In the Champions League no result is decisive. We will face the second leg as if this had finished 0-0.” Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci missed the match as punishment for his outburst aimed at Allegri. Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini were both back after the defenders recovered from thigh injuries. The second leg is in Turin on March 16.

TOP-SEEDED NISHIKORI LOSES TEMPER, FALLS IN 1ST ROUND IN RIO By STEPHEN WADE AP Sports Writer RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Kei Nishikori smashed his racket into the red clay after losing the first set on Tuesday, an unusual burst of anger from the usually calm Japanese player. Destroying the racket didn’t help. He lost the second set, too, as Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci upset the top seed in the first round of the Rio Open 6-4, 6-3. “It could be the worst match in the last few years,” Nishikori said. Asked if it was the angriest he’s ever been on a court, he replied: “Yes, it could have been.”

she started playing a little bit better,” Bellis said. “I went off a little bit. I think I was going for a little bit too much.” Bellis plays 10th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the quarterfinals. Wozniacki lost the opening set but went on to beat Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. “She’s a great young player and has a lot of confidence,” Wozniacki said of Bellis. “Right now I’m just going to enjoy this victory and then get ready for tomorrow.” Earlier, Angelique Kerber reached the tournament’s quarter-finals for the first time by beating Olympic champion Monica Puig 6-2, 6-3. The top-seeded German is 3-1 against Puig, but the last time they played the Puerto Rican beat Kerber for the gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. “It’s always tough to play against Monica, especially after our last match,” Kerber said.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — American teen Catherine “CiCi” Bellis captured her first career Top 10 win yesterday when she upset sixthranked Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the third round at the Dubai Tennis Championships. “It’s definitely, obviously, the biggest win of my career, and probably one of the best days of my life,” Bellis said. The 17-year-old Bellis, ranked 70th, had lost her previous four matches against top 10 opponents. Bellis is one of two teenagers in the quarter-finals with 19-year-old Ana Konjuh of Croatia beating eighth-seeded Elena Vesnina of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Bellis led 2-0 in the third set before fourth-seeded Radwanska rebounded to 2-2. The Pole faded afterward with Bellis clinching 16 of the last 22 points. “I think in the second set

“I was really not thinking too much about our final in Rio, because it was a completely totally different match than today.” Kerber, who started the season as the No. 1-ranked player before Serena Williams won the Australian Open to reclaim the top spot, will return to the highest ranking if she wins the Dubai title this week. Kerber saved all five break points she faced against Puig, including in the final game of the first set when she trailed 0-40. In her final service game of the second set, she recovered from 15-40 to go ahead 5-3. “I was feeling good from the first point,” Kerber said. “I’m really happy about how I played today.” Kerber next plays Konjuh. Also, seventh-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine defeated Christina McHale of the United States 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. “Didn’t do my best,” Svitolina said, “but then I’m really happy that I won to-

‘Catch Me If You Can’

Lady Nathalie avoids getting caught F

or another year, the Lady in Red, Lady Nathalie avoided getting caught by any of the five A Class boats in the St Valentine’s Massacre in Montagu Bay. The ‘Catch Me If You Can’ race was held on Sunday, concluding a series of activities over the weekend. The Lady Nathalie, skippered by Cyde Rolle, was given a 12-minute head start on the field and she crossed the finish line in the two-lap race before she was caught. The massacre, held for the 30th year by Eleazor ‘the Sailing Barber’ Johnson - the owner of the Lady Nathalie - also featured a series of races for the Optimist boats for juniors, the B Class series and an A Class race on Saturday. However, the results of those races were not available up to press time last night.
