High School Basketball Nationals starts today By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net FOLLOWING the completion of the 35th Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic for senior boys, the Bahamas Basketball Federation/ Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is getting set to host their National High School Tournament, featuring the senior boys and girls and Family Island divisions. The tournament, featuring some 31 teams, is set to get underway 3pm today and will wrap up on Monday night when the championship game is played. The opening ceremonies will be
held at 10:30am Friday. The Jack Hayward Gymnasium will be the host for the senior girls and Family Island Division, while the senior boys’ games will be played at the St George’s Auditorium. “We are very, very excited about this tournament,” said Evon Wisdom, who heads the Sports Division at the Ministry of Education. “Bahamians should realise that this is actually three tournaments wrapped up into one. “I think what makes this different is that we have young ladies participating in the tournament as well as we will have the Family Islands competing in the small schools division for the teams that
will not get a chance to compete for the title against the senior boys teams.” Wisdom noted that the small schools division is so important because they want to pair the schools with the smaller population to compete against their peers rather than being faced with the challenge as they do in Hugh Campbell where they face teams that have a larger population of students. “We know that all of the divisions will be very exciting. We know that the senior girls will be exciting and we know that after the Hugh Campbell Tournament, the senior boys’ division will also be very exciting,” Wisdom stated. “But who will be the best small
school in the country to emerge as the champions? We have about 10 schools playing in that division, so we anticipate that this will be the biggest tournament in the country.” The tournament comes on the heels of the Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic on Sunday at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium where the Tabernacle Baptist Falcons knocked off the CI Gibson Rattlers to win their seventh title, the first since 2010. Also joining the Rattlers from New Providence are the Jordan Prince William Falcons, the Bahamas Association of Independ-

he Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association completed its Subway Junior National Classics yesterday at the National Tennis Centre with Sydney Clarke, Michael Major Jr and Kaylee Kanuka winning the final three titles. Clarke, 15, cemented her position as the top junior female player in the country with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Gabriela Donaldson in the girls’ 18-and-under singles final. “My match was great. I love my performance today. I was very calm and all my shots were excellent,” Clarke said. “At the beginning I was a little concerned, but I just relaxed and played my game.” In the first set, Clarke went up
three breaks for a 5-1 lead before Donaldson managed to stay in the match with a break for a 5-2 deficit. But Clarke held serve to secure the set. When they resumed play for the second set, Clarke got her second break to go up 4-2 and she ended the set on her third break for the match. “I could still work on my serves and my slices,” said Clarke, in critiquing her game. “I also need to improve on my physical fitness and I will be okay.” Clarke, 15, said the competition was tough in Grand Bahama, but she’s just excited that she was able to survive as the champion. A little dejected, 17-year-old Donaldson admitted that it wasn’t her best performance. “It was okay. I wished I could have played better and smarter, but she hit some good shots,” said Donaldson. “I just could have
played smarter because she hit some good shots. “I just need to work on staying with the points a little longer.” Boys’ Under-12 Final Michael Major Jr secured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dentry Mortimer Jr to pull off his second victory in their head-to-head match-up for the year. “It was a good match. My strokes were very good. The only thing I could say I didn’t do well in this match was my volley approach,” Major Jr stated. “I missed a lot of my open shots in my volleys.” Major Jr, a 10-year-old sixth grader at St John’s College, said he played better than the last time he met Mortimer when he won 6-2, 6-2. “It feels good,” stressed Major Jr, who was broken by Mortimer for a 1-1 tie in the first set, but went up a break at 5-1 and held on for
By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net PRIME Minister Perry Christie, expressing the gratitude of the Bahamian people to FIFA and the Bahamas Football Association, said it was a delight to have hosted the successful CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship in the brand new state-of-the-art stadium at Malcolm Park last week. But he indicated that their expectations have now risen even higher as the country prepares to host the prestigious FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 April 27 to May 7 at the same venue. “The Bahamas and Bahamians are a most welcoming and hospitable country and people,” said Christie at the official draw for the 16 participating teams Monday night at Atlantis Theatre on Paradise Island. “As a government and as a people, we proudly and eagerly look forward to welcoming teams, representatives and fans from all over the world to this world-class event in a few months time. “It also speaks volumes as to the will and determination of our nation to use sports as a vehicle for social development and upliftment of our people, especially our youth, and for personal development. As a government, we are committed to the development of the whole man and sport is but one of the avenues by which we hope to achieve this.” Christie, who headed the list of dignitaries that included Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson, Anton Sealey, president of the BFA and both Jaime Yarza, head of FIFA events and Joan Cusco, executive vice president of Beach Soccer Worldwide, said he’s encouraged and proud of the growing partnership between The Bahamas Football Association and FIFA, and the resulting goodwill and support by FIFA to the development of football in our nation. “The results have been real and tangible and we thank this worldwide body for all that they have done and will do in the future,” he said. Christie invited the world to come to the Bahamas and to be a part of an excit-

the win before he breezed through the second set. Not only is Major Jr holding his own on the court, but he’s also doing it in the classroom. He has been selected by St John’s College as their representative for the Junior Primary School Student of the Year honours. Congratulations for a job well done. Mortimer said he felt he could have played better. “I wasn’t concentrating enough. I was getting frustrated,” he said. “I missed a lot of the easy ones.” Mortimer, an 11-year-old sixth grader at Hillcrest Academy, said he hopes that the next time they meet, the results will be different.
Charlton top athlete of Big Ten Track Championships again BAHAMIAN Devynne Charlton was named the top athlete of the Big Ten Track Championships, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Charlton scored 28 points to win two gold medals and a silver over the weekend to earn the award for the second year in a row. She was nearly perfect at Big Ten, winning all three of her preliminary heats Friday, with one in the 60-metre dash, 60-metre hurdles and 200-metre dash. Saturday, she opened her day by breaking the school record to win the 60m dash with a time of 7.26 seconds, which ranks 11th in the country. About 40 minutes later, she was back on the track to defend her 60m hurdles title, which she did by tying her own school record and Bahamian record with a time of 7.97 seconds. That time ranks second in the country. Another 40 minutes went by before she was on the track in the
200m dash final, where she ran the No. 2 time in programme history, No. 33 in the country, crossing the line in 23.53 seconds to take the silver medal. Charlton is the first woman in program,e history to win the 60m dash Big Ten title. She is also the only woman in school history to win the 60m hurdles conference title and now has two of them to her name. No Purdue woman has ever won a 200m dash conference title, making Charlton’s secondplace finish in the event the best in school history. The 60m dash and 60m hurdles have been contested at the Big Ten Championships since 1999. Prior to that, the 55-metre dash and 55-metre hurdles were held from 1985 to 1998, while the 60yard dash and 60-yard hurdles existed from 1982 to 1987, except for 1985 which contested both events at 55-meters. Sybil Perry won the 60-yard dash in 1982 and 1983, while Ali-
DEVYNNE CHARLTON wins the women’s 60 metres. cia Bass won the 55-metre hurdles in 1985. Charlton is just the second woman in Big Ten history to win the 60m dash and 60m hurdles at the same meet. The feat occurred four times in the 55-metre hurdles
and 55-metre dash by three different individuals. Charlton is the second woman in conference history to earn Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships in back-to-back years and the first since 2012 when Chris-
tina Manning of Ohio State did so. Like Charlton, Manning won the 60m dash, 60m hurdles and was runner-up in the 200m dash. Charlton’s 28 points at the conference meet are the most since Manning. Four women earned back-toback Athlete of the Championships honours prior to the award being split into track as well as field distinctions. Over the last two seasons, Charlton scored 51 points at Big Ten Indoor Championships. The total is more than three schools scored in the same time frame. Charlton is an NCAA Championships qualifier in the 60m dash and 60m hurdles. A year ago, she finished third at the meet in hurdles. Final declarations and entries will be announced later this week. Chartlon also picked up Purdue’s Sportsmanship Award on the women’s side. For the men, the honour went to Justin Veteto, who earned a bronze medal in the 60m hurdles.

We both played well. It was just about keeping the ball in play,” said a confident Kanuka after her victory. “The wind started acting up and I started hitting my ball long, but I was able to control the shots and hold on for the win.” The 11-year-old Kanuka, who is in the sixth grade at Meridian School, had no
problems pulling off the big points when she needed to. Ferguson, a nine-year-old fourth grader at Kingsway Academy, gave it her best shot in trying to contain Kanuka. “I played good. I wasn’t really controlling the balls,” Ferguson said. “I need to control the ball more. I also need to hit the ball higher and longer.” The champions in the other categories were decided at the YMCA Gymnasium in Grand Bahama over the weekend. The three matches played above were postponed because of the rain delay.

Beach Soccer World Cup ‘puts our rich cultural heritage on display’ By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE hosting the of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 represents several milestones, not only for the Bahamas but for FIFA and the sport of beach soccer round the world. Host Bahamas Football Association’s president Anton Sealey made the remarks during the Official Draw for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 in the Atlantis Theatre on Paradise Island on Tuesday night. The event, scheduled for April 27 to May 7, comes on the heels of the BFA’s successful hosting of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer World Cup Qualifier that was held over the weekend. Panama defeated Mexico 4-2 for the title and the two teams booked their return trip to the Bahamas for the World Cup where they will represent CONCACAF along with the Bahamas, who was awarded their spot as the host. The Bahamas finished sixth in the CONCACAF championships after losing 4-2 to the United States of America, whose fifth place denied them an opportunity to compete in the World Cup. The Bahamas is making history as the first country in the Caribbean to host a FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, joining major global destinations like Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, France, Italy, Tahiti and Portugal, who staged the previous eight. But Sealey said their newly constructed beach soccer stadium, which was completed just in time to host the CONCACAF Championships, is the largest permanent facility ever constructed for a FIFA beach soccer event. “FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 is an investment that will have both short term and long term benefits to the local community,” Sealey told a large audience that
included Prime Minister Perry Christie, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson and FIFA executives. “It will be the longest continuous competitive event ever held in The Bahamas, bringing 16 of the best beach soccer teams from around the world and many enthusiastic beach soccer fans to experience the unparalleled beauty and unique culture of The Bahamas.” Sealey expressed the BFA’s gratitude to FIFA for affording the Bahamas the opportunity to stage the prestigious event, which he called a critical part of the foundation on which the future of beach soccer in The Bahamas is built. “The Bahamas Football Federation has worked closely with our stakeholders, including local soccer clubs and school soccer teams to drive the development of soccer in The Bahamas for many years,” he stated. “We’ve gained a groundswell of support and seen tremendous growth in local interest and participation of soccer. Indeed, it is our privilege to have the opportunity to do the same with beach soccer, one of the most dynamic and quickly growing sports in the world.” Sealey assured the audience that the BFA is committed to the strategic development of beach soccer in the Bahamas by educating the youth about the sport and training the next generation of competitors from this region. “In addition to showcasing the breathtaking beauty of these islands and the superb talent of the athletes, this event also puts our rich cultural heritage on display,” he said. “We believe that it will be important for the visitors to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 to taste the distinctive cuisine and hear music that will transport them to a world of unforgettable experiences. “ Sealey summed up by

ing event, the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017. “I look forward to keen competition from the 16 teams that will compete in this event,” he projected. “Beach soccer is a relatively new sport but it is one that is gaining in popularity in terms of worldwide competition. I can tell you that you will witness 16 of the finest teams in the very keenest of competition over a period of two weeks. At the same time you will be able to enjoy the exuberance of the hospitality and friendliness of our people, our culture and our renowned environment.” Christie added that he looks forward to welcoming the visitors to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017 in the Bahamas.

MEDAL HAUL: The Bahamas Judo Federation’s 18-member team with their medals won at the Florida Open in Miami. They brought home 18 medals.
‘This is the best performance we have ever had as a federation’ D’ARCY Rahming, president of the Bahamas Judo Federation, said Team Bahamas’ performance at the Florida Open in Miami over the weekend was “the best performance we have ever had as a federation.” The 18-member team returned home with a total of 18 medals. “This is the best performance we have ever had as a federation,” he said. “We had three promotions to black belt by victory over other black belts.” On their return home, the team was greeted at the Lynden Pindling International Airport by Bahamas Olympic Committee President Wellington Miller, who congratulated them and wished them success at the CARIFTA Games. The team finished second overall and Joshua McFall was awarded the best senior male athlete trophy. “It will be difficult to decide the final team for CARIFTA,” Rahming said. “But one thing we will know for sure is that every team member will be an international medallist.” Rahming said the Florida Open was the tipping point for their sport. “We have never had a performance such as this. I was expecting eight medals, but we got 24,” he said. “We had a team of 18 athletes and won 18 medals in individual events.” Rahming said the event gave the athletes the experience they needed for CARIFTA, scheduled for April 7 at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium when a total of 12 countries are expected in town to participate.

Durant out indefinitely with left knee injury By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Kevin Durant is down for the immediate future with a knee injury, and that’s a huge blow on both ends of the floor for the playoff-bound, championship-chasing Golden State Warriors. Stephen Curry and Co. are going to have to carry on without KD perhaps for the remainder of the regular season — and maybe longer. Durant will be out indefinitely after he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and bruised a bone in his leg during Tuesday night’s loss at Washington, leaving the Warriors without their shot-blocking big man who also does it all on offense. “Heal up my Man...we will hold it down til your back on the court with us. Prayers up!” Curry, the two-time reigning MVP, posted Wednesday on Twitter. The NBA’s top team will push toward the playoffs without its leading scorer and rebounder. For the month of March, at least. The Warriors said Wednesday that their medical staff hasn’t ruled out a Durant return before the end of the regular season, though nobody is predict-
ing at this stage. “At this time it’s just speculation to guess when that is,” general manager Bob Myers said in a conference call. “He’ll heal as his body heals. And when he’s healed and our doctors clear him and we feel like it’s safe, he’ll play. I want to know as much as you guys but at this point the plan is just to reevaluate him and see where he’s at in four weeks.” The All-Star forward hyperextended his knee early in the Warriors’ 112108 loss to the Wizards and later underwent an MRI exam, which revealed a Grade 2 — or moderate — sprain in the knee as well as a bruised tibia. Durant is scheduled to be reevaluated in four weeks, so if he is fully healthy then, that would leave about two weeks remaining in the regular season. He was scheduled to return to the Bay Area on Wednesday and immediately begin rehabilitation. The Warriors headed for Chicago to continue a grueling stretch of eight games in 13 days with a cross-country trip. They return to Oakland for one game then a back-to-back at Minnesota and San Antonio on March 10-11. On a Wizards possession under their basket less than a minute into the game, Washington center Marcin
WARRIORS’ Kevin Durant will be out indefinitely after he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and bruised a bone in his leg. (AP) Gortat pushed Warriors center Zaza Pachulia, who fell into Durant’s left leg. While Myers isn’t on the trip and only saw the play on TV, he said the team’s video staff might have other angles he can see — though in speaking to Durant there wasn’t immediate concern about the play being intentional. “These things happen in sports,” Myers said. “No-
body’s raised that question on our side. I don’t know if it’s being raised outside of us. I spoke to Kevin a couple times. Other than just being disappointed that he’s injured, nobody’s mentioned anything like that.” The Warriors became the earliest team in NBA history to clinch a playoff berth when they beat the Nets on Saturday and are now focused on locking up the No. 1 seed in the Western Con-
ference. LeBron James, whose Cleveland team beat the Warriors in Game 7 for last year’s championship before Durant came from Oklahoma City, saw the injury. “I hope it’s not serious,” James said. “We’ll see what happens.” Durant leads the Warriors in scoring and rebounding with 25.3 points and 8.2 boards along with 4.8 assists in his first season with
Golden State. At 50-10, the Warriors have the NBA’s best record. Myers expects the Warriors to fill the 15th spot on the roster in the next 24 to 48 hours, though Matt Barnes posted a photo on his Instagram account from his first stint with the Warriors and this: “You know you’re strong when you’re helping ppl through their storms while going through your own that’s strength.” Myers declined to provide names in the mix. “These things are very fluid this time of year or any time of year to be honest. Injuries happen unexpectedly,” he said. “We have to take another look at what our roster needs. I’m not going to get into specifics. We have to look and see where we need the most depth in light of this recent occurrence. We’re in the process of doing that and should have some resolution in the next 24 to 48 hours. ... Last night showed that you have to be able to pivot in the course of an NBA season. We’ll do our best with the options available to keep the roster in the best shape we can.” • AP Sports Writer Howard Fendrich in Washington and Freelance Writer Ken Powtak in Boston contributed to this report.
EMBIID’S SEASON OVER BECAUSE OF LEFT KNEE PROBLEMS By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer MIAMI (AP) — Philadelphia center Joel Embiid’s season is over because of left knee problems, including a torn meniscus that is worse than the team first thought. The 76ers made the announcement Wednesday, hours before the team’s game against the Miami Heat. Embiid missed his first two NBA seasons with right foot issues, then finally made his debut this season and appeared in 31 games with the 76ers. He hadn’t played since Jan. 27, and the 76ers had said in recent days that he could be back as early as this week. But an MRI performed on Monday showed the meniscus problem was apparently worse than first thought, and the 76ers made the decision to end his season. “The area affected by the bone bruise has improved significantly, while the previously identified meniscus tear appears more pronounced in this most recent scan,” said Sixers Chief Medical Director Jonathan Glashow. “We will
continue to work with leading specialists to gather additional information through clinical examination and sequential testing to determine the best course of action and next steps.” Embiid averaged 20.2 points and 7.8 rebounds this season, and even though this was his third year since getting drafted he was considered as a strong rookie of the year candidate. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft still could win the award, given how dominant he looked at times this season. The 76ers were cautious with Embiid, never playing him more than 30 minutes in a game — yet he still had a penchant for big numbers. He scored at least 20 points in 19 of his 31 appearances, had nine double-doubles, blocked at least three shots 12 times and even was a 37 percent shooter from 3-point range. And now, another setback. “Our primary objective and focus remains to protect his longterm health and ability to perform on the basketball court,” 76ers President of Basketball Operations Bryan Colangelo said.

Salary cap for 2017 season is $167m, up $12m By BARRY WILNER AP Pro Football Writer NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL salary cap for the upcoming season will be $167 million per team, up more than $12 million over last year. The league and the NFL Players Association compile the cap from specific revenues, and it has risen annually. It was $143.28 million two years ago. This is the fourth consecutive year the cap has risen at least $10 million. Player benefits also are included under the 10-year labor agreement reached to end the 2011 lockout. That comes to $37 million per team, bringing the players’ total compensation package to over $200 million per club for the first time. In comparison, baseball had 12 teams with luxurytax payrolls beyond $167 million in 2016. Since 2011, the cap has increased by $47 million. Also, 2017 is the first year of a four-season minimum spending period of 89 percent per club and 95 percent leaguewide. The added cap room should have a major impact on teams’ spending when the NFL’s new year begins next Thursday. “A lot,” Seahawks general manager John Schneider said Wednesday at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. “It’s an ongoing process, trying to make sure you can

There’s going to be some guys that have to leave.’ It’s just part of the game. “This year in particular I think you see there’s a huge
discrepancy in terms of cap space with a number of teams. It’s what the NFL’s about. It’s about parity, and so you have those teams that are just going to be able to that much more than you possibly can. It’s all about trying to move those pieces around and try to stay in the game with the free agents and your own free agents as much as you possibly can.”
Seven players were given franchise tags this year: Redskins QB Kirk Cousins and Rams CB Trumaine Johnson, both for the second straight year; Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell; Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul; Cardinals LB Chandler Jones; Chargers LB Melvin Ingram; and Panthers DT Kawann Short. Only Cousins and Bell got exclusive
tags, meaning no team can talk to them except their current club. Compensation would go to any team losing a non-exclusive franchise player in the form of two first-round draft picks. Quarterback, of course, has the highest franchise tag tender at $21.268 million. Next is defensive end ($16.934 million), followed by wide receiver ($15.682
million). Then it’s linebacker ($14.550 million), offensive line ($14.271 million), cornerback ($14.212 million), defensive tackle ($13.387 million), running back ($12.120 million), safety ($10.896 million), tight end ($9.78 million) and kicker/punter ($4.835 million). Pittsburgh GM Kevin Colbert believes more teams are taking the path the Steelers usually do of developing players they draft and rewarding their own free agents. “As a result, you’re seeing less and less quality free agents (on the market),” Colbert said. “There’s an inherent danger in that, because some of the players who are hitting the market with the number of dollars that are available might not be quite worth what they’re going to get paid because of the supply and demand. And I think that’s reflective in a lot of the early cuts, the five- and six-year-deal guys who usually get cut after two or three, because maybe they were oversigned. “I think that it reinforces that you’re wanting to sign your own and keep your own. But again, you have to be careful about the free agent market and not overpay for maybe an average player.” Yet, beginning next week, the money will flow to many free agents, even though this crop seems lacking in franchise-type players.

Barcelona takes the lead, Luis Enrique says he’ll quit By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer MADRID (AP) — On a night marked by the surprise announcement that coach Luis Enrique will leave Barcelona at the end of the season, his team routed relegationthreatened Sporting Gijon 6-1 to return to the top of the Spanish league on Wednesday. Lionel Messi scored his leagueleading 21st goal less than 10 minutes into the match at the Camp Nou to help Barcelona earn a comfortable victory. Barcelona leads the standings for the first time since the opening round, one point ahead of Real Madrid, which was held by Las Palmas to a 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Madrid, which still has a game in hand, scored twice with Cristiano Ronaldo in the final minutes to erase a two-goal deficit and salvage a point despite playing most of the second half without 10 men after a red card for Gareth Bale. Luis Enrique announced that he will not coach Barcelona next season in the post-match news conference, saying that he needed to rest. “The reason clearly had to do with the way of life I need to have in this profession, constantly having to find solutions, constantly trying to improve my team,” he said. After scoring important late winners in the last two games, Messi put Barcelona on the board with a header off a long cross into the area in the ninth minute. It was his 36th goal in 36 matches this season, and his 12th in the last 11 league games. The Argentina playmaker also hit the crossbar with a free kick in the 59th minutes, a couple of minutes before being substituted. Two minutes after Messi opened the scoring, Barcelona added to the lead with an own goal by Juan Rodriguez, who deflected a shot by Luis Suarez. The Uruguay striker scored with a volley from inside the area in the 27th, and his second-half substitute, Paco Alcacer, added the fourth from close range after a pass by Messi. Sporting, which could have left the relegation zone with a victory, got its lone goal from Carlos Castro in the 21st. Third-place Sevilla, five points off the lead, hosts Athletic Bilbao on Thursday. Fourth-place Atletico plays at struggling Deportivo La Coruna on the same day. REAL MADRID 3, LAS PALMAS 3 Real Madrid looked set to return to the top when Francisco “Isco” Alarcon scored in the eighth minute. But Pedro “Tana” Dominguez equalized two minutes later and Las Palmas took advantage of Gareth Bale’s sending off with a second yellow card for an altercation with an opponent at the beginning of the second half. The visitors, sitting 12th in the
standings, went ahead with a penalty kick converted by Jonathan Viera in the 56th and a counterattack goal scored by Kevin-Prince Boateng in the 59th. Ronaldo helped Madrid rally by converting a penalty in the 86th and netting the equalizer with a header in the 89th. “We have to improve a lot of things,” Madrid left back Marcelo said. Madrid, seeking its first league title since 2012, had been leading the league since the eighth round. Zinedine Zidane’s team has scored at least one goal in 45 straight games, breaking Barcelona’s record from 1942-44.

CELTA VIGO 2, ESPANYOL 2 All four goals were scored in an 11-minute span in the first half of a game between two mid-table clubs. Iago Aspas put Celta ahead in the 21st and Gerard Moreno
GRANADA 2, ALAVES 1 Granada won its third game in a row at home to move closer to leaving the relegation zone. Alaves had two players sent off in second-half injury time.
OSASUNA 1, VILLARREAL 4 Colombian striker Santos Borre scored twice in the first half as Villarreal easily defeated last-place Osasuna to remain in sixth place. Bruno Soriano and Roberto Soldado also scored for the visitors. The result extended Osasuna’s winless run in the league to 17 games.
Aguero’s double leads Man City into FA Cup quarters By STEVE DOUGLAS AP Sports Writer SERGIO Aguero is making the most of his reprieve at Manchester City. Back in the team after an injury to new signing Gabriel Jesus, Aguero scored two goals for the second straight game to lead City’s fightback in a 5-1 win over secondtier Huddersfield in an FA Cup fifth-round replay on Wednesday. It followed his double against Monaco in the Champions League last week and got City coach Pep Guardiola’s seal of approval. “The best Sergio I have ever seen,” Guardiola said. It has taken some time for Aguero, one of City’s greatest ever players and its first-choice striker since 2011, to win over his new coach. Guardiola hasn’t been satisfied with Aguero’s work off the ball, calling out the Argentina international publicly and dropping him for some games in the first half of the season. Then, following Gabriel Jesus’ arrival in January, Aguero was made the back-up to the Brazilian for four straight games, only for Gabriel Jesus to break a bone in his foot during a Premier League match against Bournemouth on Feb. 13. Aguero returned to the team and is doing exactly what Guardiola wants. “His performance was amazing,” Guardiola said, “not just his

For the Pablo Zabaleta, which was set up northern team and its German-
born coach David Wagner, promotion from the League Championship remains the priority — and it’s a distinct possibility, with the team currently in third place. And the visitors had City worried after Harry Bunn gave them the lead with a shot that went under the body of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, the latest error from a player who lost his first-team place about the same time as Aguero. Bravo, signed from Barcelona in August, has now conceded nine goals from the last 14 shots he has faced. There was sarcastic applause from some City fans when he saved Huddersfield’s second shot on goal just before halftime. The FA Cup could be City’s best chance of a trophy in Guardiola’s first season in charge. City leads Monaco 5-3 after the first leg of their last-16 match in the Champions League and is in third place in the Premier League, 11 points behind leader Chelsea. City set up a quarterfinal match against Middlesbrough on March 11. That means City’s Premier League game against Stoke, originally scheduled for that date, will be brought forward to March 8. RIBERY STARS ON COMEBACK FOR BAYERN MUNICH IN GERMAN CUP By CIARAN FAHEY Associated Press BERLIN (AP) — Franck Ribery starred on his return from a thigh injury to help Bayern Munich reach the German Cup semifinals with a comfortable 3-0 win over Schalke yesterday. The French winger made an immediate impact, setting up Robert Lewandowski to open the scoring with a chip over goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann in the third minute. Ribery was involved again for Bayern’s second, sending through Lewandowski, who drew Faehrmann away from goal and then
crossed Thiago Alcantara to head into the unguarded net in the 16th minute. It got worse for the visitors when Ribery pulled the ball back for Lewandowski to shoot his second from a central position inside half an hour. It took Lewandowski’s tally across all competitions to 30 so far for the season. The 33-year-old Ribery hadn’t played since the end of January after picking up the injury in training. Seemingly content with its comfortable lead, Bayern kept Schalke at bay for the second half without exerting the effort that led to the goals in the first.
Ribery went off for Kingsley Coman in the 67th minutes The visitors’ miserable evening was completed when Holger Badstuber was sent off late in the game with his second yellow card on his second return to Munich. Former teammate Arjen Robben asked the referee to reconsider but to no avail. Badstuber, who joined Schalke on loan from Bayern in the winter transfer period, was celebrated by the home fans as he left the pitch. Two penalties were enough for Borussia Moenchengladbach to beat Hamburger SV 2-1 away in the other quarter-final. The recently prolific Lars Stindl
broke the deadlock from the spot minutes after the restart, awarded when Mergim Mavraj brought Patrick Herrmann down. It was Stindl’s eighth goal in six games across all competitions. Raffael made it 2-0 with another minutes later, this time after Matthias Ostrzolek fouled Jonas Hofmann. American forward Bobby Wood grabbed Hamburg’s consolation goal with a fine finish inside the far corner in injury time. Wood had earlier gone closest for Hamburg when he was denied by a good save from Yann Sommer, before ‘Gladbach emerged with purpose from the break.

LAZIO BEATS ROMA 2-0 IN 1ST LEG OF ITALIAN CUP SEMI-FINAL ROME (AP) — Lazio won its first derby in nearly four years as it edged city rival Roma 2-0 in the first leg of their Italian Cup semifinal on Wednesday. Lazio hadn’t beaten Roma since the cup final in 2013 but goals from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile ensured it ended a run of four successive defeats to its bitter rival. Both teams had early chances in an entertaining match and Roma striker Edin Dzeko almost scored with less than two minutes on the clock but his effort was deflected over the bar. Lazio took the lead on the half hour with a move started and finished by Milinkovic-Savic. The Serbian midfielder sent Felipe Anderson sprinting into the area and then rushed in himself to collect the return pass at the near post and fire into the back of the net. Dzeko should have leveled immediately but he headed Radja Nainggolan’s cross over the bar. Roma went even closer on the hour when Mohamed Salah’s snapshot crashed off the outside of the near post. Lazio thought it had doubled its lead seven minutes later, but Immobile’s effort was ruled out for offside. Immobile did get on the scoresheet in the 78th minute. Keita Balde Diao did well to steal the ball off Roma defender Kostas Manolas and cut inside the right side of the penalty area before rolling across for Immobile at the back post for the easiest of tapins. The return leg will be played on April 5. The winner will meet holder Juventus or Napoli in the final. Juventus beat Napoli 3-1 in their semifinal on Tuesday.
PSG SCORES LATE GOALS TO SCRAPE INTO FRENCH CUP QUARTERS By JEROME PUGMIRE AP Sports Writer PARIS (AP) — Substitute Javier Pastore scored an opportunist late goal and then set up Edinson Cavani as Paris Saint-Germain won 2-0 at second-tier Niort to reach the French Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday. With 12 minutes remaining, Pastore reacted quickly to slide in Christopher Nkunku’s whipped free kick from the right. After Niort’s goalkeeper Artur Desmas went close to equalizing in injury time following a corner, there was just enough time for Pastore to break down the left wing and set up Cavani’s 36th of a prolific season. It was Pastore’s first goal and followed his impressive performance in a 5-1 win away to Marseille on Sunday night. PSG is chasing a third straight domestic treble while Niort is in 12th place in the second tier and had lost three out of its previous four games. But driving rain, plus a slippery and muddy pitch, reduced the obvious gap in playing ability in a scrappy match where players regularly lost their footing. “Niort’s players were very committed,” PSG right back Thomas Meunier said. “We had a lot of trouble scoring against them.” Portuguese winger Goncalo Guedes made his first PSG appearance since joining from Benfica in January, while 19-year-old forward Jean-Kevin Augustin — a product of the club’s youth academy — got a rare start. Meanwhile, first division Guingamp reached the last eight after winning 2-1 away to third-tier side QuevillyRouen.

Federer upset by qualifier Donskoy in Dubai, Murray wins By SANDRA HARWITT Associated Press DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Roger Federer squandered three match points in a shock 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) second round loss to Russian qualifier Evgeny Donskoy at the Dubai Tennis Championships yesterday. Federer, who has just won his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, failed to take advantage of three match points in the second set tiebreaker, losing two of the three opportunities on unforced errors. “(I) surprised everyone I think today,” the 116th-ranked Donskoy said. “Whoever win against Roger surprises himself, I think.” Adding to the challenge for the Russian was playing against Federer for the first time. “It was really tough in the beginning, because it was too much pressure,” Donskoy said. “Because it’s Roger, and I never even practice with him.” Federer netted a forehand on Donskoy’s one set point in the second set tiebreaker to extend the match to a third set. Donskoy’s dream of a quarterfinal berth seemed over when he forfeited his serve in the sixth
game of the third set. But Federer wasn’t able to close out the match when serving for it at 5-3 in the third, and then watched the Russian work his way to victory. Federer led 5-1 in the third set tiebreaker, but Donskoy refused to fold. “I had my chances,” Federer said. “I should somehow close it out. Don’t know how it got away, but he did very well, and yeah, it’s a rough one, for sure.” Federer, who skipped last year’s tournament because of arthroscopic knee surgery, was in the hunt for an eighth Dubai title. The initial excitement in the match occurred with Federer leading 6-3, 3-4 - when one set of the court floodlights went dark. Fans in the crowd turned on their cellphone flashlights and start waving them in the air as if they were at a rock concert. Both players then agreed to play on despite the problem and by two games later full lighting was restored. “I felt, if he wants to keep playing, I’m happy to keep playing,” Federer said. “I didn’t want to wait. It wasn’t just, like, dark. It was just darker.” Donskoy will play seventhseeded Lucas Pouille in the quar-

Pouille defeated qualifier Marius Copil 6-1, 6-4. “It’s tough to judge this one, because I could have won in two and I’d be already almost hitting the pillow now thinking about Pouille,” Federer said. “But now here I’m explaining what didn’t go well.” The day went a lot better for top-seeded Andy Murray, who earned a place in the last eight with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Murray, playing in his first tour-
nament since a fourth round defeat at the Australian Open last month, is showing no signs of being match rusty despite having to deal with a case of shingles. The top-ranked Briton needed only 72-minutes to bypass the 97th-ranked Garcia-Lopez, saving the one break point he faced on serve at 30-40 in the first game of the match. He broke Garcia-Lopez’s serve for the first of five times in the fourth game of the first set. “When I got the early break,
pretty much was almost 30 minutes in and we’d only played four games,” Murray said. “Mentally, that was important for me, you know, to be up at that stage. “I loosened up a bit after that and played really well.” Murray, who only dropped one point on serve in the second set, will play Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarter-finals. Kohlschreiber posted a 6-4, 6-4 second round win over Daniil Medvedev. “Every time we have played, we have had a lot of close matches,” Murray said of Kohlschreiber. “He’s a talented guy. He uses the angles of the court well. He plays with a lot of spin.” Fourth-seeded Gael Monfils struggled with Dan Evans before securing a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win to reach the quarter-finals, where he faces left-hander Fernando Verdasco. In an all-Spanish second-round outing, Verdasco upset sixthseeded Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Robin Haase upset fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to set up a quarter-final meeting against Damir Dzhumur, who defeated Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4.
