The six-day event, featuring eight countries placed in two separate pools, is slated to kick off 2pm today at the Malcolm Park Beach Soccer Facility with El Salvador taking on Costa Rica.
The host Bahamas team will be in action during the

Youth, Sports and Culture Mario Bowleg said they are excited about the SuperClubs Breezes National High School Track and Field Championships. The three-day event will take place at the original Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium from March 20-23 and
will attract over 1,500 athletes from more than 30 schools from throughout the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
During a press conference yesterday at SuperClubs Breezes, Bowleg highlighted the fact that the championships will not just be about competition, but a celebration of “grit, determination and sheer passion.
“It’s where records will be shattered, limits will be tested and champions will rise. It’s going to be three

PAULINE DAVIS TO BE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME
‘GOLDEN girl’ Pauline Davis, the first female athlete in the Caribbean to win an individual and relay gold medal at the same Olympic Games, will be rewarded with her introduction into the Bob Hayes 25th Hall of Fame.
The ceremony is slated to take place on Thursday in the Potter’s House International Ministries, 5119 Normandy Boulevard in Jacksonville, Florida.
“The organisers from the Bob Hayes committee came to the Bahamas and they saw me, spoke to Minister of Sports Mario Bowleg and they announced that “I will be elected to the Hall of Fame.
“They were impressed that I came from such a small island nation and that I was able to garner two Olympic gold medals and that ascended to the board of World Athletics and now I am a lifetime member of the organisation.”
When Davis, now a 58-year-old consultant at the Ministry of Sports, got the news, she said she couldn’t believe it.
“I was shocked. I didn’t know how to react. I was literally in shock,” she said. “What it really said is that you just have to be diligent, you have to be honest, you have to be reliable and you just have to work hard.
“At one time, I was offered a lot to leave my country and run for another country. I was even offered a rich husband to leave the Bahamas. But I couldn’t

“VJ” Edgecombe capped off his initial regular season with the Baylor Bears men’s basketball team by earning the Big 12 Freshman of the Year award. The announcement came last night as Edgecombe and his Bears’ team-mates Norchad Omier and Robert O. Wright III were voted as three Big 12 honourees.
The Big 12 awards were voted on by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players. Edgecombe, a 6-foot, 5-inch guard, became the 13th player in Big 12 history and the third-straight rookie from Baylor to sweep the preseason and postseason freshman of the year honours. days of electrifying display of talent and heart. I know history is about to be made. The big question is are you ready?
Under the theme “Breaking Limits, Achieving Greatness,” companies such as IL Cares, Insurance Management, Superior Waste and Bahamasair are joining title sponsors SuperClubs Breezes as sponsors in helping to build a foundation where young athletes can push their limits and compete at their highest potential, according to Bowleg.
“Together, we care ensuring that the student-athletes have every opportunity to excel and soar to new heights,” Bowleg stressed.
“We’ll witness fierce competition, new rivalries and moments of true sportsmanship as these young athletes give their all for gold. The energy will be electric and we can’t wait to see the limits they break on their way to victory.”
To the student-athletes competing, Bowleg told them that this is their time.
“You have put in the hard work, the dedication and the sacrifice,” he said.
“You’ve trained for this moment and now it’s time to break your limits and reach for greatness.
“Whether you’re running, jumping, throwing or hurdling, know that you represent the best of the Bahamas. Your country is behind you and we can’t wait to see you rise to the occasion.”
Director of Education
Dominique McCartneyRussell, who represented Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin, said the goal of their ministry is to provide quality, holistic and global competitive education.
But she noted that their ministry is excited about partnering with the Ministry of Education and allows them to give the quality and holistic opportunities for their children.
“We are excited to partner with the ministry under the theme breaking limits, achieving greatness because that is what we want our students, our athletes to break every limit to allow

no barrier to stop them from achieving, but to ensure that they do all that they need to do to become great.”
McCartney-Russell, however, said that it is their hope that some of these same student-athletes will come back and make a contribution as physical education teachers, an area in their ministry that is short-handed.
In wishing the athletes all of the best, McCartneyRussell said events such as the nationals bring a sense of camaraderie and cohesiveness and when they
return to their campus, they can carry that level of enthusiasm with them.
Drumeco Archer, president of the BAAA, said they are looking forward to one of the best events ever seen in many years.
He congratulated the Queen’s College Comets for winning the BAISS title last week and he’s looking forward to the GSSSA Championships this week.
But two weeks after the Nationals, Archer said the BAAA will be hosting its final trials for the CARIFTA Games in Trinidad & Tobago over the Easter
holiday weekend and, based on what he’s seen so far, the Bahamas should be poised to take a very competitive team to the games.
He also commended the Ministry of Sports’ acting director of sports Kelsie Johnson-Sills and sports officer Seanea Bowe, for ensuring that everything is in place.
“This should be the marquee event,” said Archer, who feels that anytime you bring in all of the schools from around the country, the meet should take precedence over all others.
“It’s the final competition just before our final CARIFTA trials, which is two weeks later. It’s where all of the greatest athletes will convene to get a berth on the CARIFTA tram.
“It’s our pride and joy and we want to bring home the best possible results we can and that starts with the National High School Track and Field Championships.” Carlo Ramsey, representing IL Cares, said they are delighted to be a part of the sponsorship of the event.
PARENTS are being urged to play a more pivotal role in the lives of their children as they participate in the 31st annual Government Secondary Schools Sports Assocation Track and Field Championships.
As much as possible, they are encouraged to be in attendance at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadum when the event takes place from Wednesday to Friday.
Those were the sentiments expressed loud and clear during a press conference by the Ministry of Education last week to announce plans for the event. The press conference, according to education officer Keisha Pratt-Johnson, underscores the invaluable role of athletics in shaping their student-athletes.
“Sports teach discipline, teamwork, resilience and a commitment to excellence - qualities that prepare young people for success both on and off the field,” Knowles said.
The meet follows the introduction of the historic inaugural Baton of Camaraderie Torch Run
that was launched on Tuesday, March 4, by Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin.
The torch run, which was envisioned by Dawn Knowles and Keith Saunders, passed through each participating junior and senior high school carrying the “energy, aspirations and determination” of the young athletes competing in the meet.
“It is a symbol of their shared commitment to sportsmanship, excellence and national pride,” Knowles said.
While it was built on “collaboration, perseverance and unwavering support for one another,” Knowles said the journey for the student-athletes is the role of parents and guardians.
“Their encouragement, presence and unwavering support provide the foundation upon which student-athletes thrive,” Knowles summed up.
“When parents support their children in sports, they are not just fostering athletic development, they are nurturing confidence, resilience and a strong work ethic that will benefit them in all aspects of life.”
Domonique McCartneyRussell, the director of education, who filled in for the absence of Minister Hanna-Martin, said their celebration of athletic excellence, hard work and determination under the theme “The Power of Education and Sports in Youth
Development” is a good way for the GSSSA to provide a platform for the young children to grow.
“Your investment in sports education and competition is an investment in the future of our nation,” McCartney-Russell stated.
To our coaches, she said your dedication and passion will not go unnoticed.
“You are all the backbone of this competition, shaping our athletes, not just in track and field, but for life itself,” she stressed.
“Thank you for your mentorship and the sacrifices that you have made daily in helping our children, our athletes, with endurance, strength, polymetric training, hydration, nutrients, injury protection and prevention and recovery strategies.”
She noted the championships will not just be about who crosses the finish line first, but rather about sportsmanship, team work and self-improvement.
“We have witnessed incredible performances, personal bests and moments of true grit over the years,” she pointed out.
“But our goal in the Ministry of Education for our children, our athletes, is not just to develop premier athletes.
“There are so many other benefits to participation in athletics including physical fitness, emotional health, academic success and discipline. Students also

develop their social skills and are exposed to a variety of career opportunities in sports, in fitness business and education.”
She advised the athletes competing in the championships that their “hard work’ is paying off and she wished them every success in their endeavours.
GSSSA president Varel Davis reconfirmed that “sports play an essential role in the growth and development of our youth.”
She noted that while they welcome Knowles for the role she is now playing as a former teacher at RM Bailey, they will also take the time out during this year’s championships to pay homage to the late Jack Knowles, a former longtime teacher at CH Reeves, who passed away last year.
“Our schools, athletes and coaches are eager for the competition,” she stated.
“We are anticipating an exciting championship (this
week). Regardless of the outcome, whether win, lose or draw, let’s make this one to remember.”
Ishmael Smith, the president of the New Providence Association of Secondary Schools, the parent body of the GSSSA, said a lot of work has gone into making the event a success.
“These athletes not only represent their schools, but also the hope and promise of the future of education and sports when they are given the attention and resources they deserve,” he said. “Together, they will shape the next generation of innovators and leaders.”
Smith too encouraged the parents to make a collective effort to provide the same type of assistance to their children as they would do for them when they are in the classroom.
Royal Bahamas Police Force superintendent Treco Sweeting from the Grove Police Station said the continued success of the event will depend on the participation of the parents.
“The kids know that they have to behave when their parents are there,” he said. “I just want to put out a call to all parents who have athletes competing in this event to please try and come out and support your athlete.”
He noted that their presence is even more important because the children tell their parents that they are going to the
“Thank you for giving us the opportunity and we wish every success in this event.”
GSSSA president Varel Davis said they are expected to be a part of the nationals and with hard work, dedication and the drive to push forward, she’s convinced that their student-athletes will strive to bring out the best in their abilities to win.
The Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools was expected to be represented by Jason Edwards of St Augustine’s College.
But while he wasn’t in attendance, a video presentation showed that Grand Bahama, led by deputy director of sports Norris Bain and GBSSAA president Dereck Wells, Stephon Johnson, head coach of the Agape Christin Academy in Abaco and coach Kenard Rolle, head coach of Preston Albury High, are all gearing up to make the trek to Nassau for the championships.
“We will continue to invest in our young children and to give them the opportunities that they need to be successful,” he said.
stadium and they are not there. They use their time to go and do other things.
To safeguard the children, Sweeting said they have devised a number of plans to deal with those persons in attendance in and outside of the stadium.
And Dr Barr, a member of the security team headed by Nathan Archer, said they will have about 30 officers in attendance to support the RBPF and to ensure that everybody follows the protocols in place.
“We will be enforcing the rules. This is no time to play around,” he stressed. “All of us who can make a difference, let’s make a difference.”
Jaron Williams, a member of the National Sports Authority, said persons in attendance will be comfortable with the first phase of the renovations they have made to the stadium.
He noted that there have been improvements to the bathroom blocks, general entry areas, improved track surface, parking and an additional 500 seats for the spectators.
“We congratulate the GSSSA for its commitment to providing a quality event for its students,” he said.
“We at the NSA will match your energy and professionalism by providing you with a first-class facility, service and experience.”
The meet will get underway at 9am each morning.
‘Golden Knight’ Ramon Miller and ‘Golden Girl’ Pauline Davis share their experiences
By BRENT STUBBS Chief Sports Editor bstubbs@tribunemedia.net
AS a part of her teaching observation at Claridge Primary, physical education teacher Latoya Bain brought in “Golden Knight” Ramon Miller and “Golden Girl” Pauline Davis to address her grade six students.
In two separate sessions yesterday, the students heard about the journey from the Bahamas to the top of the dais as Olympic Games medallists. In attendance were acting principal Patrice Roker and senior mistress Tamica Major.
As a part of the sessions, videos were shown of both athletes in action as they competed with their relay team members. Each also took the time out to share their experiences with the students.
Reflecting on the performances by the team of Chris “Fireman” Brown, Demetrius Pinder, Michael Mathieu and Miller in dethroning the United States for the gold in the 4 x 400m relay at the London Olympics in 2012, Miller said the performance came from hard work and determination.
The former Centreville Primary, AF Adderley and CR Walker Secondary High School student said he didn’t get started competing until he was in grade 11, but he spent 19 years running for the Bahamas from the CARIFTA Games to the CAC Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympics. “You have to work a little harder coming

out of the government school system, but you can do it,” said Miller, who produced his gold medal for the students to feel. “I was
able to get it done. I was able to get a scholarship to Dickenson State University where I was inducted into the Hall of Fame.”

Miller, now a police officer on the Royal Bahamas Police force and a coach in the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, said his two most memorable experiences came at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and London in 2012.
“In Beijing, we won the silver medal in the relay and that set the stage for us when we came back and won the gold in London,” Miller said. “Winning an Olympic medal is the hardest thing in the world to achieve in sports.
“But we did it right here from the Bahamas. So, I don’t want you to let anyone try to detour you from your goals. If we can achieve it, you can do it too. This year, you will start a new chapter in your life when you enter junior high school.”
To the students, Miller shared the four Dsdetermined, dedicated, disciplined and have the desire to achieve. He told the student-athletes that
once they apply those four Ds to their lives, they will become successful. Davis, a 58-year-old former student of LW Young, Government High School and the University of Alabama, provided an insight of her youthful days growing up in Bain Town.
She shared her experiences that led to her writing her award-winning book: “Running Sideways: The Olympic Champion Who Made History.”
She also shared about her journey and her relationship with the Golden Girls - Eldece Clarke, Savatheda Fynes, Chandra Sturrup and Debbie Ferguson that helped them to win both the silver and gold in the relay at the Olympics and her gold medal in the 200m.
She is now a consultant with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and on Thursday will be heading to Jacksonville, Florida for her induction into the Bob Hayes 25th annual Hall of Fame Induction Gala.

leave Bain Town because Bain Town gave me so much love and support.” Davis, a product from the LW Young Junior High School, Government High and the University of Alabama, said it meant a lot to her not to be a dollar figure on what it meant for her to be a Bahamian.
“I chose to stay and now
I’m getting another huge international award,” said Davis, who in 2022 produced her award-winning book “Running Sideways: The Olympic Champion Who Made Track and Field History.”

I would become an Olympic champion and so I decided to work on it and I wanted to do it as a Bahamian.” Hayes, known as ‘Bullet,’ held the title on World’s Fastest Human after winning two gold medals at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. But as fast as Hayes was, he might be best known for exploits on the football field, where he played 10 of his 11 seasons in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. He was an explosive wide receiver and kick returner, leading the
NFL in touchdown catches his first two seasons in the league. Hayes eventually earned induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Hayes, who died as a result of kidney failure in 2002 at the age of 58, was the only person ever to win an Olympic gold medal and a Super Bowl championship ring. Davis, an Austin Sealy Trophy winner as the Most Outstanding Athlete of the prestigious CARIFTA Games in 1984 at home, won a gold medal in both
the 200 metres and as a member of the Bahamas women’s 4 x 100m relay team of Savatheda Fynes, Chandra Sturrup, Debbie Ferguson and Eldece Clarke at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She originally finished in second place in the women’s 200m behind Marion Jones, but on October 5, 2007, Jones admitted to taking performance-enhancing steroids and was stripped of the title and on December 9, 2009, Davis was awarded the 200m gold medal.

STEPHEN CURRY JOINS ALMA MATER DAVIDSON AS ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER FOR BASKETBALL
By STEVE REED AP Sports Writer
DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP)
— Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry will serve as an assistant general manager for Davidson College’s basketball teams.
The four-time NBA champion and two-time league MVP will be the first active player in U.S. major professional sports to take an administrative job with a college team. He will continue to play with the Warriors while serving in this newly created role.
Curry and his wife, Ayesha, and longtime Davidson supporters Don, Matt and Erica Berman, are creating an eight-figure fund to support the college’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.
The college asked them to serve in these advisory
roles, investing their time and sharing their experience with both men’s and women’s basketball, according to a news release yesterday.
Curry will draw resources and support from the Under Armour global sports marketing team, one of his major sponsors. He said he wants Davidson’s scholar-athletes to be able to compete in the top ranks of college athletics in an ever-changing landscape where athletes are now allowed to profit from their name, image and likeness — something that wasn’t available when he played there for three seasons from 2006-09.
“The Davidson experience is top notch,” said Curry said, a three-time Southern Conference firstteam selection at Davidson.

“My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated
that I had the opportunity to play basketball at
the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high character studentathletes to have that same experience.”
Vice president and director of athletics Chris Clunie said basketball remains Davidson’s flagship sport, but the benefits of focusing on that game extend further.
“When our basketball programmes are successful,” Clunie said, “they provide much-needed revenue and exposure to support all our athletics programmes and raise the overall visibility of the college.”
Davidson is 16-15 this season in men’s basketball.
Curry said the goal is to invest in the next
student-athlete that’s coming into Davidson.
“They don’t have to take cuts on what the market says they deserve to be part of the brand of what it means to be a Davidson scholar-athlete with integrity in your academic experience,” Curry said.
“The commitment to a four-year graduation process provides countless opportunities professionally in sports or as a game changer in life.”
Matt Berman will also serve as assistant GM alongside Curry.
“Our ability to be a resource and a sounding board for the programme, but also support each student athlete, to develop personal relationships with each of them to help guide them every step of the way through their Davidson experience,” Curry said.

Gary Payton II scored a career-high 26 points in the Warriors’ 10th win in their last 11 games.
Deni Avdija returned from a two-game absence with a leg injury to record season-bests of 34 points, 16 rebounds and six assists in the Blazers’ fourth straight defeat. He’s the first Blazer since Clyde Drexler on March 20, 1990, with that stat line.
Anfernee Simons added 32 points as Portland completed a back-to-back following a 119-112 home loss to the Pistons on Sunday.

Zaccharie Risacher had 22 points, including 20 in the first half, and Terance Mann added a season-high 19.
The Hawks (31-34) have won three straight and four of five overall.

NETS 111, LAKERS 108
NEW YORK (AP) —
Noah Clowney scored 19 points and Brooklyn beat Los Angeles in the Lakers’ first game since losing LeBron James to a strained left groin.
Luka Doncic had 22 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for LA, but he shot only 8 for 26. Austin Reaves was 3 for 14 as the guards struggled with James and other key frontcourt players sidelined.
Cam Johnson and Keon Johnson each added 18 points for the Nets, who snapped a seven-game losing streak. Tyrese Martin
finished with 14 points.
Gabe Vincent scored 24 points for the Lakers, who had won eight straight before losing James in the fourth quarter of their 111-101 loss in Boston on Saturday. Dalton Knecht had 19 points and Reaves

HORNETS 105, HEAT 102
MIAMI (AP) — Miles Bridges scored 35 points, Mark Williams added 24 points and 10 rebounds and Charlotte got their first divisional win of the season by beating reeling Miami. It was the third time in March alone that Miami lost a game after leading by at least 17 points — all those collapses coming at home. The Heat led New York by 19 on March 2, led Chicago by 17 on Saturday and led the Hornets by 17 in the first half. Bam Adebayo finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists for the Heat, and Tyler Herro finished with 21 for Miami — which has lost four straight and five of six. LaMelo Ball had 15 points and 10 assists for Charlotte, which was 22 for 23 from the foul line. Miami was 14 for 20 at the line.
RAPTORS 119, WIZARDS 104
TORONTO (AP) — Toronto native A.J. Lawson made seven 3-pointers while scoring a career-high
2025,
32 points, and he also had 12 of the Raptors’ franchise-record 73 rebounds in a victory over Washington. The Raptors (22-43) had four players with at least 10 rebounds in the same game for the first time in franchise history, and all had double-doubles. Their 73 rebounds are the most in the NBA this season.
Scottie Barnes had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Toronto, and RJ Barrett finished with 14 points, 10 boards and eight assists. Orlando Robinson had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Alex Sarr had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the NBA-worst Wizards (1350), who had won their previous two games, including two nights earlier in Toronto. Jordan Poole also had 16 points while Tristan Vukcevic had 15.
BULLS 121, PACERS 103
CHICAGO (AP) — Josh Giddey had a season-high 29 points along with 10 rebounds before leaving midway through the fourth quarter with a right ankle injury, and Chicago won
their third straight game, over Indiana.
Coby White also scored 29 points for the Bulls, who hold the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.
Myles Turner scored 15 points to lead the Pacers, who have lost three straight — all of them with point guard Tyrese Haliburton sidelined by a hip issue.
Chicago held Indiana to 39.6% shooting from the field and 10 of 40 (25%) from 3-point range.
ROCKETS 97, MAGIC 84
HOUSTON (AP) —
Jabari Smith Jr. had 20 points and tied a career high with five 3-pointers, helping Houston beat Orlando for their third consecutive victory.
Alperen Sengun had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Houston, and Steven Adams finished with 11 points and 17 boards.
Paolo Banchero led Orlando with 25 points. Franz Wagner had 15 points, and Wendell Carter Jr. grabbed 12 rebounds.
The Magic closed to 65-58 on Wagner’s layup
with 5:04 left in the third quarter. But Jeff Green and Dillon Brooks made consecutive 3-pointers to make it 71-58 with 2:47 to go. Banchero made two free throws, but the Rockets scored the next four points. Aaron Holiday’s 3-pointer made it 75-60 with 26 seconds to go.
GRIZZLIES 120, SUNS 118
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Ja Morant had 29 points and 12 assists, and Memphis rallied from an early 16-point deficit to beat Phoenix.
Cam Spencer, a rookie on a two-way contract, added a career-high 16 points for Memphis, including a pair of free throws with 14.4 seconds left that sealed the Grizzlies’ third straight win. Kevin Durant scored 35 points and Devin Booker added 26 for the Suns, who jumped out to a 25-9 lead that evaporated before halftime. The game was close throughout the fourth quarter and Durant missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer just before the buzzer.
NUGGETS 140, THUNDER 127 OKLAHOMA CITY (AP — Nikola Jokic had 35 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists, and Denver beat Oklahoma City.
Jamal Murray scored 34 points for the Nuggets, who lost 127-103 in Oklahoma City on Sunday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s leading scorer and a top contender for league MVP with Jokic, finished with 25 points for the Thunder.
He scored 40 the day before.
Lu Dort had a seasonhigh 26 points and made eight 3-pointers and Isaiah Hartenstein scored 20 points for Oklahoma City.
The loss snapped a sevengame win streak for the Thunder, who have the best record in the Western Conference and are vying with Cleveland for the top record in the league.
CELTICS 114, JAZZ 108
BOSTON (AP) — Sam Hauser made nine 3-pointers — seven in the third quarter — and finished with a career-high 33 points to lead short-handed Boston past Utah.
Hauser became the fourth Celtics player to make nine 3s in a game in 2024-25, joining Jayson Tatum, Payton Pritchard and Derrick White — the first time in NBA history that four teammates have done that in a season.
Hauser’s hot stretch propelled the Celtics to a 23-point lead early in the fourth. The Jazz rallied to tie the game with 3:21 left, but Hauser’s final 3 with 1:20 left made it 112-104, and the Celtics hung on from there to win their fifth straight.
John Collins scored 28 points and Collin Sexton had 16 for the Jazz, who lost their sixth in a row.
Liverpool, Madrid and Barcelona
looking to complete Champions League job as they protect slim leads
By DANIELLA MATAR AP Sports Writer
MILAN (AP) — Defending champion Real Madrid, Liverpool and Barcelona all have one-goal leads to protect going into the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 this week.
Real Madrid also has city bragging rights at stake as it visits Atletico Madrid on Wednesday with a 2-1 advantage from the first leg. Liverpool hosts Paris Saint-Germain today knowing it was fortunate to snatch a 1-0 win in France. Barcelona also only has a 1-0 advantage over Benfica, while some other teams are feeling a lot more comfortable — Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 and Arsenal crushed PSV Eindhoven 7-1.
Smash and grab Liverpool’s players don’t really care how they’re winning — as long as they continue.
Arne Slot’s team withstood a barrage of attacks at Parc des Princes before a late goal from Harvey Elliott, who had only just come off the bench, stunned PSG. That was only Liverpool’s
second attempt on target compared to a whopping 27 shots at goal for PSG.
The runaway Premier League leader had another poor performance on Saturday but still managed to come away with a victory over Southampton.
“It’s just about winning, not how we win. Sometimes you have to win dirty and today was one of them days,” Elliott said after that match.
“We know that’s what winners do really: When times are hard, what do you do? How can you come up with something to win the game? Luckily this squad is full of them players.”
This week will be decisive for Liverpool’s treble bid as it plays Newcastle in the English League Cup final on Sunday. “We just need to make sure that energy-wise we’re still there,” Elliott said. “We’re still fighting, we’re still hungry to achieve things this season, although it’s a very tough period.”
The loss to Liverpool was PSG’s first defeat since November and halted a run of 10 straight wins for the French team. “Regardless of the result, which could have been different,

our way of preparing for the match hasn’t changed,”
PSG coach Luis Enrique said yesterday. “What is true is that as things stand we are eliminated. So we only have one option, which is to go out to win, although that is what we would have done anyway.”
If Liverpool prevails it could face an all-English
quarterfinal as it would play Aston Villa or Club Brugge. Their second leg takes place on Wednesday in Birmingham, with Villa holding a 3-1 advantage over Club Brugge.
Madrid derby
This was supposed to be the year Atletico finally got the best of Real Madrid in the Champions League
after losing two finals to its city rival and being eliminated the other two times they faced off in the knockout rounds.
Going into the first leg, Atletico was ahead of Madrid in the Spanish league and was also undefeated in the past four Madrid derbies.
But it is now on the verge of going out yet again to its neighbor.
Atletico has also slipped behind in La Liga after two late goals saw it lose 2-1 at Getafe at the weekend, while Madrid managed to grind out a 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was also able to rotate his squad and was further boosted by the return of Jude Bellingham.
The England midfielder had missed three of his team’s last four games through suspension — including the first leg against Atletico.
Barring a major shock in London, the winner will face Arsenal in the final eight.
Treble chances
It’s not just Liverpool which has its eye on lifting a trio of trophies this season.
Atletico, Real and Barcelona are also in the semifinals of the Spanish Cup and fighting it out at the top of the league table. Leverkusen is also still involved in two trophies domestically. Although it would need something of a miracle to make up the eight-point deficit it has to Bayern in the Bundesliga as well as overturn a three-goal disadvantage in the Champions League today.
Inter Milan, which won the treble in 2010 under Jose Mourinho, is in better shape.
It leads Serie A, will face AC Milan in the Italian Cup semifinals and has a 2-0 advantage over Feyenoord going into today’s second leg.
The winner of that match will face either Bayern or Leverkusen in the quarterfinals.
Barcelona’s matchup against Benfica also takes place today, with the winner set to play Lille or Borussia Dortmund. Wednesday’s game in France is the only one that is level after Lille and Dortmund drew 1-1 in the first leg.
MAN UNITED DRAWS 1-1 WITH ARSENAL AFTER BRILLIANT LATE SAVE DENIES BRUNO FERNANDES
By JAMES ROBSON AP Soccer Writer
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — A stunning double save from David Raya denied Bruno Fernandes a dramatic late winner for Manchester United against Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
Raya’s heroics salvaged a 1-1 draw for Arsenal at Old Trafford but its Premier League title looks all but out of reach with runaway leader Liverpool 15 points clear at the top of the standings.
“I don’t want to say that, but today the frustration is that we haven’t won our game. We know the urgency and we are obligated to win every single match,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said after watching his team drop points for a third straight league game.
And it could have been worse for second-placed Arsenal if not for Raya’s brilliance. In added time the goalkeeper flung himself in front of Fernandes’ effort from close range and then leapt to his feet to claw the spinning ball away just before it crossed the line.
Chelsea moved up to fourth in the standings after a 1-0 win against

Leicester and Tottenham battled back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth.
United fight
After fan protests in the street, United’s players produced one of their most spirited performances of the season to draw with Arsenal.
Thousands of United supporters marched in unity to protest the club’s ownership before kickoff. But on the field Ruben Amorim’s team produced a unified display of its own.
Fernandes fired home a free kick from around 20 yards in first-half added time and only a slew of missed chances stopped United from extending its lead after the break, with
Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui forcing saves from Raya.
Arsenal levelled through Declan Rice in the 74th, but needed Raya again to prevent Fernandes late on.
Amorim accepted that United, which was forced to cede possession for much of the game, will have to be more adventurous if he is to achieve his goal of returning the 20-time champion to the summit of English and European soccer.
And he believes there’s another way to bring the good times back to Old Trafford.
“What I can say is we need more Brunos, that is clear,” the United head coach said.
“Not just the quality and the character, he makes some mistakes, but in this league the availability is so important and he is so decisive with and without the ball.”
The draw moved United up to 14th in the 20-team standings on 34 points. Last season the once dominant United endured its worst league campaign in
34 years when it finished in eighth place. It is currently eight points off 10th-placed Fulham.
Chelsea rises Marc Cucurella struck a 60th-minute winner against Leicester at Stamford Bridge after Cole Palmer’s first-half penalty was saved.
Victory boosted Chelsea’s chances of a return to the Champions League next season, moving it ahead of four-time defending champion Manchester City, which lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest a day earlier.
The 2021 Champions League winner has not qualified for European club soccer’s top competition for the last two years. But Enzo Maresca’s team took full advantage of City’s latest loss by edging out relegation-fighting Leicester and climbing into the top four.
Cucurella’s long-range effort was drilled low into the corner to beat Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
Earlier, Hermansen had been the visitors’ hero when diving low to save Palmer’s
penalty in the 22nd. It was the first time Palmer had failed to score from the spot in the league in 13 attempts. His 100% record from his previous 12 was a league record, according to the competition’s stats provider Opta.
Spurs fightback Son Heung-min’s late penalty completed an unlikely comeback after Champions League-chasing Bournemouth had dominated the chances at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Marcus Tavernier gave the visitors the lead in the 42nd and Evanilson doubled the advantage in the 65th, while Justin Kluivert also hit the post.
Pape Sarr’s miss-hit cross caught out Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and flew into the back of the net in the 67th to give Spurs hope.
And it was Kepa’s error — bringing down Son in the box — that led to the equaliser from the penalty spot. Son stepped up and converted.

QC Comets rule!

Last season the Queen’s College Comets had to watch in disappointment as the St Augustine’s College (SAC) Big Red Machine relished in championship glory to close out the 2024 Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) Track and Field Championships.
One season later, the Comets got their revenge in emphatic fashion to derail the Big Red Machine and emerge as the 2025 BAISS Track and Field champions.
The Comets had a strong meet from start to finish, leading from day one to three, to wrap up with a winning total of 1,344 points.
Queen’s College celebrated their first BAISS crown since 2019 and
claimed just their fourth track and field championship in the school’s history.
The Big Red Machine had to settle for second place this time around with a total of 1,299.50 points.
The Temple Christian School Suns started and ended the three-day meet in the third position with 541 points. The neck-and-neck battle between the sister Anglican Schools was won by St John’s College.
The Giants wrapped up the meet in fourth at 382 points and the St Anne’s Blue Waves dropped down to fifth place at 271 points. QC bead coach Everette Fraser was all smiles as he spoke about QC’s wire-towire performance at the inter-school track and field championships.
