IN LOVING
MEMORY OF Evelyn Louise Winder-Lightbourne
September 13, 1918 – March 15, 2010
Ten years ago, tears flooded our faces upon your passing. From time to time the tears still stream our faces but over the years we have learnt to reminisce about all our precious memories with you. Mom you will always be in our hearts. We will love you forever. Sleep on in heavenly splendour. Deeply missed by your children: Lynn and Mavis; grandchildren: Anjanette, Adrian, Lynette, Sherelle and especially your Keisha.

S people around the world are watching with concern as the COVID -19, coronavirus story unfolds, the Rev Laish Boyd, Bishop of Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, is urging church members to take precautionary measures to help stop the spread of the viral disease. “As responsible Christians, let us be aware of what is happening on our planet. We have to admit that there are infections out there which spread quickly, especially since travel is a normal part of life worldwide,” he said in an open letter to the Anglican community. “We must take this seriously and respond appropriately from an informed position, and without panic. As a Church, let us be a part of smooth progress forward, even as we help to respond to the present challenge. The Most Rev’d Howard Gregory, Archbishop of the West Indies, shared these words with us this week: ‘... it is imperative that the Church be responsible in the context of this threat to our national health and function, in her worship and liturgical practice, in ways that promote healthy hygiene and as a way of partnering with the national effort to minimise, if not eliminate, the prospect of...(a larger crisis)’.” In the Diocese, Bishop Boyd said, please note the following which are temporary measures designed as a part of responsible Christian stewardship: • Intinction will be suspended until further notice. People may receive the Body of Christ in one kind only, that is in your hand. The Church’s teaching is that the whole Christ is received, whether one receives only the consecrated bread or both Body and Blood. • At this time, we will continue to use the common cup. Those who are uncomfortable with this may receive in one kind, that is, the Body of Christ only. • Hand shaking and hugging during the Greeting of Peace may continue. If you are uncomfortable then bump fists, bump elbows or bow reverently. Additionally, Bishop Boyd advises the following protocols: • Practice frequent hand washing and the use of hand sanitisers (minimum 60

percent alcohol based sanitisers). • Try to keep dirty hands away from your face. • When coughing or sneezing, please cover your mouth and nose with a flexed elbow, or use tissue and dispose of same immediately and wash your hands. • Avoid close contact with persons who are coughing, sneezing or display any symptoms of respiratory illness. • If you are coughing, sneezing, et cetera., then refrain from hugging or hand shaking at the peace, and receive communion in only one kind, that is, the Body of Christ, only, in your hand. • Everyone should seek to boost his/ her immune system. • Clergy, chalice bearers and servers should ensure that they wash their hands before and after services and, where possible, sanitize their hands before and after the administration of Holy Communion. • Hand rails and altar rails should be cleaned before and after service. • Those handling money should take extra sanitising precautions. • If possible, place hand sanitisers at the entrances of all churches. • Holy water stoops should be emptied daily (the water being poured into the ground, as in our liturgical and devotional practice). In the blessing of holy water salt is always used. For the time being we will use a little more salt than usual to increase the curative properties of the water. “In the face of what could be frightening, worrying and disconcerting, let us remain positive and hopeful. Let us seek to be fully informed by reading and by keeping up with the news,” said Bishop Boyd.

MEDITATION RUNNING A HOLY RACE “DO YOU not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27 NIV). On one of the websites that offered world statistics, the Bahamas was rated as the most athletic country in the world considering our population size and our accomplishments. Can you imagine the implications of such a statement? It has already come to mean hosting CARIFTA, and the World Relays in a state-of-the-art stadium, and beach soccer. If we continue to develop our young people’s talents and provide opportunities for them to excel, they have a bright future in a global world where the best are pursued. Many of our athletes receive scholarships abroad but still run under the Bahamian flag in international meets. Consequently, we share in their glory. They will always be our children, fostering national pride in all of us. Our diet and attitude to healthy living will greatly impact their physical stamina. Let us listen to the medical guidelines given and really lay an excellent nutritional foundation for our children from pre-conception, by having healthy mothers as healthy women before pregnancy and healthy fathers, with no drug addiction in our home. At the same time, let us strive for harmonious family relationships as a part of our nation’s health as well, as emotions affect the body more than we often realise. “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognised by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For

the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:43-45 NIV). What about the spiritual side of our people? What if we also become known internationally as a godly people who also run a race toward holiness, decency, kindness, love and justice? What if we flexed the muscles of prayer, and trained the spirit using a variety of spiritual disciplines? What if God’s name is praised whenever we win, and God’s grace keeps us humble as we prosper financially? “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think
they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him… “When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6: 5-8, 16-18 NIV). Some of us may never be able to win a medal for sports but we all can walk away from wickedness, run toward righteousness, and jump to do Jesus’ bidding. Let us keep a good balance between body, mind and spirit and win the crown that never fades by putting God first as St Paul did: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but
I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me…But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3: 12-14 NIV). When the time comes for us to die, as we all will unless the Lord returns before, we need to have prepared ourselves in advance. Lent provides an excellent opportunity to put our houses in order and make peace with our God. Once this is done, whenever our “number is called” we will be able to say like St. Paul: “I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing” (2 Tim. 4:7-8 NIV).

I AM DONE APOLOGISING! BY AYANNA CLARKE
“BUT you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.” (Psalm 3:3; NIV) So I joined this book club. I had always wanted to, so when the opportunity came, I jumped at it. Suffice it to say, the book alone was powerful enough to make me see even more positively the potential in this year. In addition to that it made my own goals seem more attainable than I had even imagined. The book made me, in one word, unapologetic. Not a fancy, romantic or lyrical word, “unapologetic”; doesn’t bring to mind feelings of whimsy, or frills. In fact, if spoken by the wrong individual, it can come off harsh, intense, or even “biggety.” And you know what? I don’t mind at all. I purport that it is time out for shrinking back into the tapestry, or blending into the background, pretending we have no greatness on the inside of us. In fact, this is what I am now saying every chance I get: Expressing your greatness gives others in the room the permission to be great also. If that is not the case, then you’re in the wrong room. To be able to say this means that I have come a long way. There was a

time, not too long ago, when I did just the opposite of what I am sharing now. I tried my best to shrink back, blend in, fade away. But it did not work. Instead of becoming comfortable with myself, I became really sad. Why, you may ask. Well, I believe wholeheartedly, it was because I was forcing myself into a mould that did not suit me at all. Pretty soon the sadness turned to misery and that misery turned to depression. By this time, I was hiding myself from public view, finding solace
It can be difficult to stand up and say, ‘This isn’t enough, I want more from myself...’ or ‘I’ve tapped out at this level, I desire to go further.’ MY TOPIC today is critical to all that we say and do, and is relevant to everyone, myself included. As always, scripture provides much insight for us and Proverbs 19:21 (KJV) is a good starting point: “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.” We may make many plans but it is God’s purpose that prevails. This is an important principle for us to grasp and should be at the centre of all that we strive to do in life. Proverbs 16:9 puts it in a slightly different way: “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” In 1 Samuel 16:7 scripture tells us “for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” Luke 6:45 makes the point that good people do good things because of the good that exists in their hearts. Dishonourable and Machiavellian people do bad things because of the evil in their
in only my work, convincing myself that my only duty was to remain a bystander in my own life. (I pause here to say that the worst experience I think we can ever have is to dream of greatness and not have that dream fulfilled. I was certainly of all men most miserable). What rescued me from a downward spiral of dejection were three basic things: 1. I acknowledged that I was emotionally unhealthy. 2. I sought the professional help I needed to get myself mentally back on the right footing. 3. I began to live intentionally; planning and pursuing the vision I had for myself before the sadness began. It can be difficult to stand up and say, “This isn’t enough, I want more from myself...” or “I’ve tapped out at this level, I desire to go further.” In the right circles, this trend of thought would be celebrated. However, in some circles, you are seen as ungrateful, complaintive, combative to even voice opinions such as these. These types of thinkers presume that we are against God and His providence by saying we want more. But nothing could be further
from the truth. There are many amongst us who may not live up to a fraction of their potential because of the fear to express their passion, talent, or skill. But I believe we do God, and our Christian faith, a disservice when we fear to explore just how high we can go; just how much we can do or achieve. Because God shields us on all sides; grounds our feet, and lifts our heads high, we can celebrate our strengths, and prayerfully use those. God bless you this week!
hearts. Our words reveal what is in our heart. Matthew 15:18 (KJV) states, “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.” Therefore according to the word of God, “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.” (Matthew 15:11) We can obtain a deeper understanding of what scripture has to say about what is in the heart of a person by looking at Proverbs 27:19 (KJV): “As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.” In other words, one sees one’s face in a mirror and one’s thoughts in the minds of others. Yet again, as water reflects a face, so a person’s heart reflects the person. Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) states that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Proverbs 4:23 (KJV) reminds us to “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for
out of it are the issues of life.” Jesus says in Matthew 12:34-35 (KJV): “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things; and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.” These are not my words, but the word of the Lord. On a concluding note, I wish to refer to some well known passages. “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.” (Psalm 112:7 KJV) Proverbs 3:5 & 6 (KJV) admonishes us “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Finally, Jesus told us in Matthew 5:8 (KJV): “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His Word.

Anglican Church Men prepare for Feast Day of St Joseph By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
ANGLICAN men will be honoured for their contributions and leadership during the upcoming Feast Day of St Joseph. Scheduled for March 19, Christ Church Cathedral on George Street will host the Anglican Church Men (ACM) of the Diocese of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands for a special service that begins at 7pm.
RELIGION St Joseph is the patron saint of the ACM. The Feast Day recognises St Joseph, husband to Mary, mother of Jesus, and the significant role he played as father to the key figure of the Christian faith. During the special feast, ACM members will be reminded to always exemplify characteristics of leadership, righteousness, obedience, and a sense of responsibility while being “arduous in response to God’s call for intentional discipleship.” The service has a two-fold purpose, as the ACM will honour 17 council presidents, both past and present. “The organisation continues to grow from strength to strength and on the shoulders of its past leaders. The role of the council president is to provide strategic leadership, mentorship and overall direction of the organisation. From 1972 to present, the organisation has peacefully transitioned, and has provided support to thousands of men across the diocese,” said the ACM in a press statement. The honorees are: Roger Simmons; Everette Z Mackey; Kurth Wallace; Kevin K Ryan; Dwight Gibson, and the following council presidents who have died and gone on to their final reward: Reuben Gomez; Harold Cole; Preston Hanna; Clyde Bethel; Warren Pinder;
Alton Wallace; David Clarke; Christopher Francis; Reginald Whylly; Edwin Strachan; Bismark Coakley, and Herbert B Scott. “All are invited to participate in this service for the Feast of St Joseph as we honour

Will Catholics and Protestants ever heal their rift over Communion? By THOMAS O’LOUGHLIN Professor of Historical Theology, Faculty of Arts, University of Nottingham (THE CONVERSATION) – On February 29, for the first time in nearly 500 years, a Catholic mass was held in the main church in Geneva – the Protestant theologian John Calvin’s adopted home town. It’s still not clear from news coverage whether Protestant worshippers were invited to receive communion. One report said that Protestants and Catholics alike would be invited to take communion while another denied this, insisting that: “people of a faith other than Catholic will not be formally invited to Eucharist, the sharing of bread and wine.” The event, and the confusion around it, highlights the problem of some Christians excluding other Christians from this central sacrament of the faith – one that, rather than dividing Christians, ought to reconcile and unite. So, should – and can – Catholic doctrine change? An illusion in most religions is that their beliefs and rituals are unchanging – and this is the same for most Christians. Instead of seeing the faith as dynamic, most Christians slip into thinking their particular focus of attention is not only immune to change but somehow perfect – the last word to be said on a topic. One item of doctrine that has got stuck in this way by being repeated rather than reflected upon is the Catholic Church’s statement that only those they consider in doctrinal agreement about the Eucharist (otherwise labelled as, variously, “Holy Communion”, “the Mass” or “the Lord’s Supper”) can participate fully at its celebration. This is a ritual whose symbolic focus is that of people gathered around a common table, eating portions of a broken loaf and drinking from a common cup filled with wine. What each ritual element is taken to mean has been controversial for centuries – but the basic set of symbols seen as linked to the Last Supper of Jesus is common to all the churches. The various meanings given to this meal make it more a moment of visible tension between churches rather than the moment of coming together they all claim they want it to be. Put crudely, this means that if you are a Protestant you are not invited to eat at a Catholic service. It also means that a
THE LAST Supper: on which Christianity’s ritual ‘meal’ of Communion is based. Catholic, even if welcome at a Protestant Eucharist, should refuse to share fully in the meal by eating and drinking. This practice of keeping denominations separate was standard policy for centuries – but, with the rise of the ecumenical movement in the 20th century, it began to seem out of place. Nonetheless, the Catholic Church – while willing to talk about unity – saw this step as impossible “until there was unity of faith”. By this the Catholics meant doctrinal uniformity: tantamount to a reversal of the Reformation – and there is no chance that will happen. This no-go attitude on the Catholic side not only creates deep hurt in relations between church leaders, but it creates tensions in households every Sunday where partners want to worship together but one feels excluded if they are from differing churches. Things could be different This problem appeared to be easing after the Catholic Church’s Second Vatican Council (1962-5) which opened dialogues with the Reformed Churches to overcome inherited differences. But in recent decades, under two conservative papacies, the situation deteriorated again. In 1998 the Catholic bishops in Britain and Ireland issued (One Bread One Body) which effectively forbade any sharing of communion. Moreover, in a conservative climate it became clear
there was serious resistance to discussion or research. This negative climate was changed suddenly in November 2015. To mark the beginning of 500th anniversary celebrations of Martin Luther’s challenge to the papacy, Pope Francis visited Rome’s Lutheran Church. Afterwards, he took questions and this issue of intercommunion was, not surprisingly, raised. Rather than closing down the question, he opened up several new avenues of thinking which could lead to a change in Catholic law and practice. Francis used his familiar approach that the church is more a field-hospital for suffering humanity than an oracular lawgiver. What, he wondered, if communion was food for a journey needed by people, rather than a reward for being a good Christian? This new openness will not be welcomed by conservatives, but many see it as a new way forward in relations between the churches. Francis also called on theologians to explore this difficulty afresh. Here is the key statement: Instead on the journey, I wonder – and I don’t know how to answer, but I make your question my own – I wonder: is the sharing of the Lord’s Supper the end of a journey or the viaticum [travellers’ food] to journey together? I leave the question to the theologians, to those who understand.
Painting: Leonardo da Vinci What would Jesus do? So can one create a theological rationale for change? Here is just one such argument. We humans need food – but only through teamwork can we eat. We do not simply eat together, we share meals. Meal sharing is distinctively human – and this sharing has an inherent structure. This has implications for the eucharist because its form is a meal – commemorating Jesus’s last supper. Can you be present and I refuse to share the food with you? Can I say that it is a meal of welcome and then not share with someone I call a “sister” or a “brother” because of Christian baptism, who asks for a share? Family meals must promote reconciliation by sharing or they are dishonest – and so unworthy of worship. I have tried to take up Pope Francis’s call to theologians and advanced nine different arguments for a change in Catholic practice in my book Eating Together, Becoming One. They have only one common element: fixing this ulcer of division means re-imagining the meal Jesus bids his followers to share in his memory. • (This article is republished from The Conversation, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts. HE Slave Trade Abolition Act passed by the British Parliament on March 23, 1807 prohibited an vessel engaging in slave trade from being cleared at any port located in British Territory after March 1, 1808. Thereafter, slave ships were boarded by the British, the slaves were confiscated and were landed at the nearest British port. The same procedure was followed in the case of a shipwreck. In New Providence, several villages were established away from the town centre to accommodate these liberated Africans; Adelaide was one of them. The Governor of the Bahamas argued in favour of these individuals being educated, in which he was supported by the Anglican Bishop of Jamaica, who at the time also served as Bishop of the Bahamas. Archdeacon McCammon Trew, with the help of the Church Aid Society, the Society of the Provision of Christian Knowledge and the government, built a church in Adelaide. It was completed and opened for service in 1849; the foundation having been laid in 1848. It was consecrated by the Rev Aubrey George Spencer, the Bishop of Jamaica, on March 22, 1850. The incumbent of the parish of St Anne, established 1845, was given the responsibility of giving pastoral care to the two communities of liberated slaves at Adelaide and Carmichael. After some years, they both became mission districts of the parish of Christ Church. This status remained until St Barnabas came into being in 1929, when St James, the only congregation in Adelaide, was attached to that new parish. Another change took place in 1964 when it was attached to the parish of St Christopher, Lyford Cay. That relationship continued until 1981, when it became a diocesan mission parish. At Adelaide, a school as well as a church were built. Since that time, a close relationship between the two entities has always existed. Whenever one building was in a poor state of repair, the other was utilised. This has occurred often over the years. Until the 1950s, a priest was unable to celebrate mass there every Sunday, and so, like at many churches in the Family Islands, the lay ministry of catechists and lay readers were frequently used, and indeed, enabled worship to continue. In 1926, a severe hurricane destroyed the church and schoolhouse as well as the homes and farms of many in the community. The village became desolate. However, two years later, in 1928, a few of the former inhabitants returned to the village. Services began again at the school. Shortly after, the church was restored. Father Senior, the parish priest, was responsible for this restoration. In preparation for the centenary celebrations of the church in 1948, both the church and the school were rebuilt.

In the late 1960s, a sacristy was added at the western end of the church. Ever since that time the structures of the church and school have continually been improved. This is a testimony to the care, concern and dedication shown by successive parish priests and the generosity of church members and many friends. This Sunday, St James Anglican Church will begin its 170th anniversary celebrations with a service at 3.30pm.
