he Shockers and Mail Boat Cybots took early leads in their respective series as the New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) Playoffs got underway Monday night. Both series will continue with game two on Friday. Shockers – 93 Rockets – 69 Salathiel Dean’s double-double led four Shockers in double figures en route to the lopsided win. Dean finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks, all game highs. William Rigby also posted a double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, Crosley Wilmore added 14, Floyd Armbrister scored 13, while Lamont Armaly finished with six points and a game high nine assists. Henderson Curry led the Rockets with 15 points, Tomeko Moxey scored 13 and Rashard Morley finished with eight points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Armaly’s ability to share the ball spread to the entire Shockers offence as they finished with 24 assists to the Rockets’ nine. Defensively, they also recorded 17 steals and forced 28 turnovers. Dean opened the game with back-to-back three pointers for an early 6-0 Shockers lead. The Rockets would pull within two, but the Shockers would close the first quarter on a 10-5 run. Wilmore’s late jumper gave them a 19-10 which they took into the second. Wilmore would also give the Shockers an eight-point lead in the second quarter with a three at the 8:25 mark for a 24-16 lead. The Rockets would respond with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to grab a 28-26 lead on a Curry three pointer. The final two minutes featured several lead changes before Armbrister’s three-point play with 17 seconds left gave the Rockets a 37-34 lead at the half. In a back and forth game, it would be the Shockers turn to go on a run in the third. Leading 41-39, Jackson Dalmon made a jumper and it sparked 10 unanswered points as the Shockers took a 51-39 lead. They led 6351 headed into the fourth quarter and were never threatened the rest of the way. The Shockers led by as much as 27 on a Diangelo Woodside layup late in the quarter. The Mingoes took an early four-point lead on their opening two possessions but the Cybots would take control midway through the first period. Clinging to an 11-10 lead, the Cybots ended the first on a 9-1 run. Hutchinson’s tip in with 1:16 left to play gave them a 20-11 lead. The lead reached double figures for the first time on the opening possession of the second quarter when Munnings made a layup. UB reduced the lead to five at
the 6:23 mark when Justin Smith made a jumper for a 28-23 score, but the Cybots finished strong to take a 47-35 lead at the half. The Mingoes were held to just eight points in the third quarter as the lead ballooned to 30 headed into the fourth (73-43). The playoff series in the John Archer Division began over the weekend with the Commonwealth Bank Giants defeating the Pirates 104-87 and Mr Ship It Regulators beating the defending champions PJ Stingers with a 108-86 victory. The four teams are expected to be back in action for game two of their best-of-three series tonight.

MORE THAN 80 TEAMS SET FOR BAHA JRS COMMUNITY TOURNAMENT By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Baha Juniors Football Club will host a season ending community-building event featuring various age groups with the backdrop of a festive atmosphere. Over 80 teams will compete in the Baha Juniors FC Community Shield Tournament at the Winton rugby field on March 25 and April 1. The tournament will feature play in six divisions. The Under-6, U-8 and U-10 teams will play 9am to noon while the U-12, U-14 and U-17 games will be played 2-5pm. Finals will be hosted on April 1. The tournament was originally scheduled to begin this weekend. However, the high volume of teams led to the rescheduling. “The whole point of it is to host a community tournament and this one is particularly special because you hardly get to see the different age brackets watch each other’s games and interact with each other. It can serve as an avenue for mentorship both on and off the field for the players and coaches,” said Marcus Cheetam, Baha Juniors club director. “Initially, we did not expect this overwhelming show of support but the clubs have really had a great response. People have been stepping up and helping in every way imaginable.” He added that the tournament will continue the club’s effort of adding further exposure and training opportunities at the developmental level. “This is a first time venture but we have wanted to do something like this for quite some time. For Baha Juniors, the youth programme has been very strong. The U-6 won their division title, while the U-8 and U-10 both lost in semis. “On a whole, the level of soccer awareness is on the rise. We had Tottenham form their programme that has brought exposure and for us, Baha is doing its third trip to Disney to participate and all these activities at different levels just raise awareness of the sport. The coaches feed off the energy of the kids and vice versa. I have had more people reaching out to me for their kids to become involved than I’ve ever had before.” Event sponsors include EFG Bank and Trust, Starbucks, Gatorade, Aquapure and others. “We just want the parents and the kids to have an outstanding time. We want the kids to come out, be competitive and enjoy the day while getting some great games in. It’s like having a mini-fair but based around the sport.”

In the coaching ranks, Yolett McPhee-McCuin and her Jacksonville University Jaguars came up just short in making consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament but earned a berth to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Dolphins received an at large bid and will play on the road at Georgia Tech on Thursday. The tournament field consists of 32 automatic invitations – one from each conference – and 32 at-large teams. As a runner-up in
the league tournament, Stetson received the ASUN’s automatic qualifier. “Since taking over this programme, our goal has been to win championships,” head coach McPhee-McCuin said on the Dolphins’ athletic website. “We’re obviously disappointed with the outcome of this year’s results but the opportunity to participate in the WNIT is quite an honour. I am encouraged as another postseason berth shows the true trajectory of our programme. We will represent Jacksonville University and the ASUN to the best of our ability.” The Dolphins’ 23 wins tied the school mark for most wins in a season and they also had the best RPI in the conference. Last season, McPhee-McCuin led the Dolphins to a 22-11 record, the A-Sun tournament title and their first NCAA Tournament championship berth in school history.

TORRES INGRAHAM (sitting in the centre) yesterday officially signed his letter of intent to join the Alma College Scots.
TORRES SIGNS HIS LETTER OF INTENT TO JOIN ALMA COLLEGE SCOTS By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net DECISION day arrived for one Bahamian high school football standout as he seeks to take his game to the NCAA Division III level in the fall. Torres Ingraham officially signed his letter of intent to join the Alma College Scots yesterday - his 18th birthday. The Scots compete in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association of Division III. In 2016, they recorded the programme’s best record in over a decade. The Scots posted a 7-3 record, marking the most wins since 2004, and became just the 14th team in the 123-year history of the programme to reach the
seven-win mark. Alma will travel to Saint Vincent College in Pennsylvania to open the season on September 2. Ingraham spent the last two seasons at the high school level with the Northview Cougars in Dothan, Alabama, primarily on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver. The Cougars finished a disappointing 0-10 this season in the state’s 6A Region Two. Head coach LaBrian Stewart was fired at the conclusion of the season in November after a 16-35 record in five seasons. Ingraham has been reported to run as fast as a 4.4 40-yard-dash and has been targeted by several schools, primarily National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA) Division I schools before eventually
signing with Alma. Despite his team’s strug-
gles, Ingraham made his mark individually and was
selected to the fourth annual NUC All-American Game last December in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to the Senior All-Star Game, the event included a full week of activities for youth (7th and 8th graders) including the NUC Youth All-Star Game. There were also events for high school underclassmen (9th, 10th and 11th graders) that included a series of situational practices and functions. The NUC All-American Game weekend included 100 of the best players from each grade level. Ingraham was a former Bahamian junior national basketball team member and competed at the Centrobasket Under-15 Championships prior to relocating to the United States.

Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler each had 23 points for the Bulls (32-35), who got a needed win to boost their hopes of earning the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Mirotic, who didn’t play in Chicago’s loss to Boston on Sunday, had five 3-pointers, while Rondo provided the spark for the Bulls in his first start since Dec. 30.
Along with hitting a season-high three 3-pointers, he had six assists and seven rebounds. ‘King James’ has triple-double, Cavaliers rout Pistons 128-96 By STEVE HERRICK Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James got his 52nd career triple-double, Kyrie Irving scored 26 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers used a blazing start to overpower the Detroit Pistons 128-96 last night. James picked up his 10th triple-double of the season and third in the last four games at the 3:45 mark of the third quarter. In only 28 minutes, the four-time MVP finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. Cleveland had lost four of five, but James helped them cruise in this one. He even overpowered a teammate at one point, flattening Irving while grabbing a rebound in the third quarter. James helped Irving to his feet then dribbled the ball up the floor. Cleveland’s hot shooting buried Detroit early. The Cavaliers made their first 10 3-pointers and started by hitting 22 of 25 shots for a 60-33 lead early in the second quarter. Iman Shumpert scored a season-high 18 points for Cleveland, which is 3-5 in March but still leads Boston by 2 1/2 games for the best record in the Eastern Conference. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 17 points. The Pistons are seventh in the East but are in a tight battle with several teams for a playoff spot. Detroit used a fourthquarter rally to defeat Cleveland last week at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Cavaliers went ahead four minutes into the game and removed any idea the Pistons may have had of pulling another surprise. Andre Drummond had 14 rebounds and Marcus Morris scored 13 points for the Pistons. Cleveland made 19 of 30 3-pointers and shot 60 per cent from the field. Larry Sanders, signed by the Cavaliers on Monday, played the final 1:58 and missed his only shot attempt while recording two fouls. The Cavaliers also received encouraging news before the game about Kevin Love. The forward, who had knee surgery last month, is expected to return during the team’s road trip that begins Saturday. LEICESTER BEATS SEVILLA 2-0, MAKES CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER-FINALS
LEICESTER’s Wes Morgan celebrates yesterday after he scores a goal during the Champions League round of 16 second leg match against Sevilla at the King Power Stadium in Leicester, England. (AP Photo/Rui Vieira) By STEVE DOUGLAS AP Sports Writer LEICESTER, England (AP) — The fairytale rise of Leicester touched new heights yesterday when the English champion reached the Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-0 home win over Sevilla. Leicester’s 2-1 deficit from the first leg in southern Spain was turned into a 3-2 victory on aggregate at an atmospheric King Power Stadium thanks to Wes Morgan’s close-range strike in the 27th minute and Marc Albrighton’s goal in the 54th. Sevilla, which had playmaker Samir Nasri sent off in the 74th minute for collecting a second booking for a headbutt, would have taken the game to extra time if Steven N’Zonzi had converted a penalty in the 79th. Instead, it was saved by Kasper Schmeichel, who made amends for giving away the
spot kick. Exactly two years ago, Leicester was in last place in the Premier League after a 0-0 home draw with Hull. Now, as the unlikely champion of England after winning last season’s Premier League at odds of 5,000-1, the previously unheralded club from central England can look forward to being involved in Friday’s quarter-finals draw in the Champions League with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus. Juventus eliminated FC Porto in yesterday’s other game thanks to a 1-0 win in the second leg, completing a 3-0 aggregate victory. It was a sorry night for Sevilla and its frustrated coach Jorge Sampaoli, who was sent to the stands in the closing stages for complaining to the match officials. The Spanish side was looking to qualify for the Champions
League quarter-finals for the first time but couldn’t match the intensity of the home side. As for Leicester, life just gets better in its first season in Europe’s top club competition. This was its third straight win since last season’s title-winning coach Claudio Ranieri was fired, with the team fighting a relegation battle in its Premier League title defence. Craig Shakespeare is Leicester’s new coach and he has the chance to orchestrate another miracle. This was Shakespeare’s first game since he was hired as manager until the end of the season on Sunday, and Leicester marked the occasion — possibly its highestprofile match ever — by unfurling a huge banner at one end of the stadium before kickoff with a picture of the coach holding a dog on a leash above the words “Let slip the dogs of war.” It was a line from ‘Julius Caesar,’ a play by William
Shakespeare. Across the field, banners with the words “Forever” and “Fearless” hung from the stadium roof, as blue-and-white fluttered around. It made for an electric atmosphere, the kind that carried Leicester to its improbable title triumph last season. While it seemed to get to Sevilla’s players, it inspired the home side. Leicester was quicker to most balls, playing a simple but highly effective game. Morgan’s goal typified that. After Vardy was tripped at the corner of the area, Mahrez swung over a left-footed free kick and Morgan stuck out a foot at the far post to divert the ball into the net and become the first Jamaican to score in the Champions League. Sampaoli snarled and raged in his technical area and was clearly unhappy at halftime because his players were sent out early for the second half, with two substitu-
tions made. The match was still very much in the balance, with Leicester just one conceded goal away from going out and that almost happened when Sergio Escudero drove a dipping 35-metre shot against the crossbar. A minute later, Albrighton was sending the King Power into raptures when he drove a low shot into the corner after Mahrez’s cross was poorly cleared by Adil Rami. Sevilla dominated the final 30 minutes but its task was made harder when Nasri, who was booked in the first half for a petulant swipe at Wilfried Ndidi’s ankles, collected another yellow card for going head to head with Vardy and aiming a butt. There was still time, though, for N’Zonzi to stroke a weak penalty at Schmeichel — diving to his left — as the night finished dramatically.

Guardiola tells City players to do more than try to protect 5-3 lead By JEROME PUGMIRE AP Sports Writer MONACO (AP) — Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola sees no way to stop Monaco’s prolific attack, warning his players it would be a “huge mistake” to try and defend their lead in the return leg of their Champions League last-16 match today. City won the first leg 5-3 in a pulsating game, recovering from a 3-2 deficit before rallying with late goals to take the initiative. But that means nothing to Guardiola, who is openly praiseworthy — and fearful — of a Monaco side that has scored 123 goals this season. His only option, he says, is to try and outscore Monaco again. “It would be a huge mistake, a huge mistake to think about what we have done and not think about what we have to do. They are a top, top team,” Guardiola told a news conference Tuesday. “When you play a team
that has scored 123 goals and you think to defend, then you kill yourself. The best way to defend is to attack well. I don’t know another way.” As a former coach of Barcelona, which he built into the most entertaining side in the world, Guardiola is well-placed to talk about attacking football. He considers Monaco right up there with the best attacking sides he’s faced. “They don’t attack with five, they attack with six guys. They are physically strong and fast in short spaces,” he said. “Best team in the world scoring goals.” That’s some praise from Guardiola, considering he led Barcelona to two Champions League trophies and three Spanish titles with a brand of attacking football that thrilled fans around the world. “Monaco are able to score from many different ways. The best way is to score goals, take the ball and attack as much as possible,” he said. “It’s the
only way to beat a team like this.” Guardiola’s tactics are clear, then. He wants his players on the front foot from the start and to not think about how to control the match. “Here, has to be the game,” Guardiola said, tapping his forehead twice to underline what his players need to bear in mind. “I want to see a team daring from the first minute to win the game. I don’t like my teams to speculate,” Guardiola said. “We know with 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 (defeats) we are out. We know that.” Given how neither team is focused on defending, today’s match promises to be a goal feast at Stade Louis II. “I am sure tomorrow will be a fantastic game again. I invite the people to come here,” Guardiola said, smiling. “They are going to see a good game tomorrow, I am sure of that.” Although City reached the semi-finals for the first time last season — edged
