Hubert “Hubie” Pinder
of Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, lost his battle with cancer on Friday afternoon, March 27th. He leaves behind many friends and family members, including a brother and sister-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews and their families, who will miss his warm smile and gentle heart. At just 16, Hubert left his home on Green Turtle Cay to work at the Bahamas Ironmongery in Nassau. After completing his studies in Florida and living for a short time in New Jersey, he returned to Nassau, where for nearly two decades, he worked at Head Hunters Beauty Salon, amassing a dedicated clientele. During the mid-1980s, he returned home to Green Turtle Cay and opened Hubert’s Cuts and Curls. Several generations of Green Turtle Cay residents, as well as countless second homeowners and visitors, enjoyed stopping by Hubert’s for a haircut and a chat. Hubert was, as someone recently described him, a fine man and a gentle soul. An animal lover who took it upon himself to feed the local stray cats, he was instrumental in raising funds for community projects, and he quietly lent support to relatives and friends in need. His family wishes to thank those who were there for Hubert during his time of need. To his family and friends in Nassau, Abaco and throughout North America who contributed toward medical bills and other expenses, cooked meals, visited, called or sent prayers and well wishes, please know that Hubert was touched and humbled by your love and generosity. Thanks also to Dr. Williamson Chea, his team of doctors, the nurses and staff of Male Surgical 1 at Princess Margaret Hospital and the staff and patients at the Cancer Society Cancer Caring Centre. Your kindness toward Hubert was very much appreciated. We also thank the Cancer Society of the Bahamas and the Abaco Cancer Society for their generous support, and Reverend Lightbourn of Ebenezer Methodist Church for his comforting words and kind visits. A service in celebration of Hubert’s life will be held on Green Turtle Cay at a later date. In the meantime, in lieu of flowers, his family asks that memorial donations in Hubert’s name be made to the Cancer Society of The Bahamas, P.O. Box S.S. 6539, Nassau (cancersociety.bahamas.org).

Music ministry releases playlist of hope BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET
A
SPECIAL playlist featuring music from a variety of Bahamian gospel artists to give hope and comfort during these challenging times has been released by Message In Da Music Ministries. The ministry has also released new singles and a music video from its artists, including vocalist Marva Scott. Her single, “El Shaddai” (Song of Adoration) was released last Friday. A new single by Narada “Mr Mighty Mouth” Scott, leader of the ministry, is also being released. The song is called “Live This Way”. “The inspiration behind ‘Live This Way’ is simple. You have many people who feel that Christians are to live a boring, non-productive or happy life. In my humble opinion, I serve a God who is the ruler and creator of everything. Thus, our lives should reflect that of excellence, prosperity and joy. I truly believe God intended for all to live this way. However,
when you live this way as a believer, many people are either angry, jealous or in disbelief, especially family members. But this won’t deter me and I will continue to ‘live this way’’, said Narada. Mr Mighty Mouth, as he is known, has been in the music industry for 21 years and got his name after participating in a talent show many years ago in Freeport. He hopes the music released by his ministry uplifts and comforts people. “I received the name Mighty Mouth from a young man by the name of Jermaine. Within my community known as ‘Garden Villas’ or ‘Da Ghetto’, I would often freestyle walking through my neighbour or at parties. Jermaine would say that I freestyled loudly and would call me ‘Mighty Mouth.’ I never accepted this nickname until I entered a talent show in 1996 at the Freeport High auditorium. This was where the revolution all began. I needed a stage name and that’s when I was reminded of what Jermaine would call me,” he told Tribune Religion.
Message in Da Music was founded on July 2, 1998, but officially launched in January 1999. It is multi-faceted organisation. Under its umbrella is youth organisation, an artist development/mentorship programme, a record label and a distribution company. “We deliver revolutionary messages through music to renew and transform the mind set of at-riskand gifted youths. We mentor and teach young musical artists about the music industry,” he said. The inspiration for Message In Da Music Ministries came at youth alive one night,” said Narada. “I received the vision to start a ministry that was similar to an organisation by the name of C-Side (Christ-Side), which I was a part of at the beginning of my musical journey. In this organisation were many talented individuals who were being helped by Dexter Knowles, Dawn Knowles and Ramont ‘Monty G’ Greene to expose their talents and music. Because of the development I received in that organisation I wanted to help other young up-and-coming Christian artists in my community And since then the ministry has been doing just that.” As the leader of Message in Da Music Ministries and Productions, Narada is using his time in quarantine to reflect, adjust and chart the course for the ministry’s future.

NARADA “MR MIGHTY MOUTH” SCOTT “Although there is a pandemic at hand, I’m doing what I know best: working,” he told Tribune Religion. “My words of encouragement would be to please take this pandemic seriously. Use all precautions to keep you and your family safe. Also know that we have the power of God with us,” he said. For more information, follow ‘Messageindamusicministry’ on Facebook.

THE FAITH of the centurion amazes Jesus.
Meditation The Roman Officer’s Faith BY REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS
W
HEN Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.“Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralysed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him,“Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it. When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,“Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion,“Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment. (Matthew. 8:5-13 NIV) When it comes to reading Holy Scripture, let us read the passage once to get a
general sense, another time to understand the immediate context, and the third time to see how God wishes us prayerfully to apply the message to our own life and time. Since most people are on lock-down or curfew, we can all use this free time wisely to deepen our knowledge of Scripture and hence our love for God. The main emphasis of this miracle story is the faith of the Gentile centurion in the person and authority of Jesus, and who has great respect for Jesus’ power to heal from a distance with a word, and the contrast of such faith with that of the Jews. The reference to the Kingdom of Heaven is intended to warn Jewish-Christians that faith is the key to eternal life, and that they may find themselves excluded if unfaithful, while Gentiles are included. How deep is our faith in Jesus at this time? Is He your Messiah, the son of God, who can heal and teach with authority? Do you recognize yourself in this story, as a Gentile? In the face of the coronavirus, we are all called to be faithful. We are to do whatever we can to avoid infection, to pray for healing of the sick, and believe that God will be with us through the whole ordeal: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans.8:35-39 NIV) • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. I’M DONE APOLOGISING! PART II - ASKING FOR HELP “BUT you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.” (Psalm 3:3; NIV) I met someone the other day. A gentleman from my favourite coffee shop. I don’t know his name, don’t know if we’ll ever speak again, but we had an exchange that totally fits what we’re talking about in our recent “Unapologetic” articles. So here’s how it went (kind of): I’m late for an assignment but decide to stop at the coffee shop. The gentleman is in his usual spot at the front, just right of the entrance. Very gently, he gets my attention. We chat about the book I am reading and he compliments me on my last article. I remember that I’m late so I say a kind, “Thank you,” and then proceed to make and collect my order from the best baristas in New Providence. I know you’re probably wondering, what in heavens does this exchange have to do with our topic? You see, the old Ayanna (someone who used to be very uncomfortable with compliments) would have coyly thrown his gracious compliment away. I may have changed the subject, or started talking about him if I had the time, or just said nothing at all. But I’m done apologising for doing something that others see the worth in. Gosh, darn it, I’m not afraid to say that I see the worth in it as well.
This new attitude came from sitting on someone’s couch and pouring out my soul, my pain, my frustrations to them (all in several two-hour sessions), and I’m not ashamed to say, after the role playing and the self-assessments, recognising false belief systems, reconciling past events, you name it – I was actually able to say, “Thank you!” to a kind gentleman who likes what I wrote. There is proof in the statement: There’s nothing wrong in asking for help. I first had to admit to myself that something was wrong on the inside. It had been for a long time. Once I faced that truth, I couldn’t pretend like I had it all together, or that I could help myself. If I could, then I would have done so. I dare to declare emphatically: “There are some issues we face that cannot be ‘churched’ away.” Sometimes we need to be given tools to cope with, get beyond or face our circumstances. I’m happy that I sought help and adhered to the lessons of counselling. It made me more confident, more self-aware, and aided in me understanding my place in the world around me. Additionally, people like me, those plagued with low self-esteem and rejection, are not crazy. That was a great fear for me. It took me years to get over the fear of: What if people think I’m “mental?” What if they think I’ve gone off the deep end? What if
PALM SUNDAY AS WE celebrate and commemorate Palm Sunday, one of the most important days in the Christian calendar, let us attempt to put this day into perspective. Palm Sunday represents the beginning of Holy Week, a week when Jesus Christ, God manifest in human form, would triumphantly enter Jerusalem, be arrested on Holy Thursday, would suffer a brutal death on a cross for our sins on Good Friday, and rise again. This culmination of events provides hope for Christians who focus their eyes on eternal life with God, and the mystery of their salvation through the death of Christ. The gospels inform us that Christ rode into Jerusalem on a donkey to the shout of Hosanna from the crowd who
BY CARLOS SPENCER
laid down their cloaks and small branches of tree (palms) in front of him. Part of Psalm 118:26 was sang “Blessed be He that cometh in the name of the Lord”. The donkey was symbolic as it represented an animal of peace as opposed to an animal of war. Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on a donkey would represent His entry as the Prince of Peace as distinct from a king on a horse, raging war. This is most significant. We refer to this day as Palm Sunday because of the palm branches that were laid along the road as Christ rode the donkey into Jerusalem. Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His Word.

they decide I’m no longer qualified or equipped to lead worship…participate in ministry…deal with their children… What if? Fact of the matter is there are many out there who, like me, may feel that if they smile enough, help others enough, dress well enough, get accepted enough, then all the deficient places in their lives will one day be filled. This idea is so wrong. The frustration of failure after all these attempts pushed me further away from the wholeness I desperately sought. But once I got the help I needed, I began to see so clearly that life could have happiness and light, and purpose beyond what others saw for me, or even what I had relegated my own life to. These sessions were the best conversations of my life. They reminded me that God has not changed His mind about who He made me to be. He was indeed a
shield. He did protect me. He did cause me to lift up my head again. Perhaps, it can be the same for you. I’m not suggesting that you are depressed, or that your sadness is permanent. Never label yourself without full knowledge of what is going on. But once you know for sure, be brave enough to declare: 1. I need help 2. I cannot help myself 3. I will seek out the right source of help 4. I will submit to the lessons 5. I will receive healing God bless you this week!

Emerge Youth Church reaches out to young Bahamians in times of trouble I BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES REPORTER ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET
N AN effort to keep the country’s youth engaged during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and 24-hour curfew, members of the Emerge Youth Church organisation are using their social media platforms to uplift and encourage. They established “EYC TV” which features a weekly online show; on Sundays at 10.30am and on Wednesdays at 6.30 pm, and can be accessed via Facebook at emergeyouthchurch242, and on Instagram at emergeyouthchurch. “This is to make sure (the young people) are taking this very seriously. So despite us not meeting physically, we are still keeping them engaged. It’s a TV show that is geared towards youth and young adults. The Youth Ministry at Bahamas Faith Ministries International has always been media-driven from it’s conception, so we are just continuing with the model to bring the gospel to this generation,” said Pastor Elnathan Rolle, also known as DJ Counsellor, of Emerge Youth Church. The show, he said, highlights the talented people engaged in youth ministry, such as gospel recording artists, both locally and internationally. “We believe in creating platforms for youth to discover and develop their God-given talents and to use them to advance the kingdom or God,” said DJ Counsellor. “The show has featured persons like one of our outstanding youths, Tamisha Daxson, who is a nursing student sharing (information) about the global crisis.” This past Sunday, “EYC TV” featured Pastor Rosemary Bethel of Epic Church, one of the featured speakers at this year’s EYC Youth Alive 2020 summit set to take place this July. Leading the discussion on young people and the church, DJ Counsellor noted: “There has always been a talk with young persons not interested in church any more, and I heard a gentleman ranting, and I told this individual that every congregation doesn’t have your problem. There are some congregations where persons want to go. Young adults and millennials are serving and loving their churches.
A SNAPSHOT of EYC TV live.
EMERGE Youth Church performing. “I think with a lot of millennials now, if they can’t truly identify with their leader, that’s a problem. And again that spills in the community. I think there comes to a time where if a leader needs help, they need to ask and find help. Because again, if you are leading a congregation and
(most of your) congregants are not engaging in your service, you haveproblems.” Pastor Bethel added that she believes the reason many millennials and Generation Z kids don’t want to go to church is because there has been no space created for them. “And what I mean by that is that in most churches there is no demand placed on them that will keep them inspired to serve and be a part of a community. I think globally we have changed; and the Church can longer be about some kind of religious ritual, it has to be about what people can come in and feel...the safety of connection. They need community, and they need to know there is a community that (not only)uses or utilises their gifts, but meets their needs as well,” she said. Pastor Bethel added: “If you have a plan for continued growth or want to have legacy, then you can’t just focus on the people that are present or that you feel can support the ministry at this
moment; you have to create a legacy. It takes a lot more work to build people that are living transformed lives, than to hype up people for a moment. It takes some getting into the day-to-day realities that people face. Our young people are facing a lot of trauma and they need that kind of connection that says in this place you don’t have to be silent and off to the corner, because what you have to say matters, your voice matters, what you contribute matters. And we want to know how are you doing today. It is as simple as that.” For more discussions like this, DJ Counsellor is encouraging people to keep up to date with the Emerge Youth Church Facebook page for the team’s live sessions. He added that they also have three major events planned between April and July – the “Burn-Out Lock-In”, the “I Rise” youth leadership seminar, and Youth Alive 2020. He is asking people keep checking to see if the dates change.
