LOCKED DOWN, BUT SPIRITUALLY FREE -BAHAMIANS EXPERIENCE GOD IN A NEW WAY BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

T

HERE is no telling when the government will lift the country’s quarantine and churches can return to their buildings for regular worship services. For now, the new method of reaching congregants through technology and online streaming will continue indefinitely. As countries around the world have imposed lockdowns of some nature in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, many believers are becoming concerned that not being able to worship in the usual way for a prolonged period of time not only means physical confinement, but a spiritual one as well. We asked several Christian followers how the lockdown and quarantine has affected their spiritual lives. “The church is not the building, it is the people. So, when I heard that most places would be shut down, including churches, I did not feel concerned, not

one bit,” said Ferrice Kemp. “My faith has not been stifled in any way by this. I still have a relationship with God, and that is something I can have whether I am at church or outside of church.” Bain Morris said while his personal relationship with God has not been affected by not being able to attend church and worship in the traditional way, he is still eager for the day when the quarantine restrictions are fully lifted. “There is just something special about assembling among with one another as believers. It is a wonderful thing to experience. I love praise and worship. I love the atmosphere in church, and I feel that is what has been missing from my life these past weeks. I miss how the Holy Spirit would move through a worship service; one person is moved and starts crying, then someone else is moved in a special way and there is just this awesome praise breakout that happens. It is just marvellous,” he said.

The Bible speaks of “not forsaking the assembling of themselves together”, but Markel Williams believes this assembling can take place anywhere, not only in a church. “I haven’t attended church for the past three years and some say to me, ‘You have forsaken the brethren and the assembling, and I say to them, ‘No, I haven’t’. I can assemble anywhere with like-minded believers to worship and pray, and that is exactly what I have been doing. I have been assembling to pray, praise and build my relationship with other believers. It’s just that I haven’t been doing it in the four walls of the church.” Ms Williams said she has gained a new clarity and focus when it comes to her faith and believes others can achieve the same during this time of lockdown. “When I attended church I was always the one consistently doing and doing instead of turning my focus on my

relationship with God and receiving from Him. I realised all I had been missing out. But now I am enjoying my relationship with Jesus Christ in my own way and I love what is happening now,” she said. As for Tanya Evans, she is experiencing an even greater level of spiritual freedom during the quarantine. “My spiritual life has gotten much stronger. Just the relaxed state we are in and just having to concentrate more on what the word is really telling you has been a good thing for me,” she said. “I can study more even though I have things going on in the house. I can concentrate on God’s word even more and get a better sense and understanding. There is no rush. I don’t have to cut my time short in the word because I have to get my clothes together for work or I have to hurry up read this scripture because I have somewhere to be. Now it’s still, relaxing and I am experiencing God in a new way.”

Voluntary imprisonment Standing against a common enemy BY AYANNA CLARKE I WAS in deep conversation with a friend just the other day and we were reminiscing about activities we used to do on a Saturday afternoon. Reminisce seems such a funny word, considering the activities we were discussing were a part of recent and perpetual history. But it was indeed apt in light of the fact that we have been quarantined for weeks now, some of us with nary a glimpse of the outside, except for the momentary glances to see who dares pull into the driveway, walk past the window, or speaks in more than a hushed tone in the neighbour’s yard. “Quarantine” – a word I never even thought about until now; a part of my vocabulary, but not used consistently or with any affection. Quarantine – reserved, in my mind, only for the sick and dying. Quarantine – a word of movie, stage or tome; certainly not for the vibrant, vivacious or virile amongst us. Nonetheless, we all find ourselves in the words of singer Akon: “I’m locked up, they won’t let me out!” (And yes, to the ultra-religious of us, it is not a gospel song.) But after much thought I have come to appreciate this term. It epitomises the extra mile that we are willing to go in order to keep us all safe and alive. It brings to mind the verse of scripture that reads, “Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.” (Ephesians 6:13, NLT) What could be more appropriate than seeing our isolation not as incarceration, but a voluntary imprisonment; a measure of standing, a piece of the Bahamian armour against an international threat. I prefer to think that by locking ourselves away we have taken a stand against further spread, further infection, further death. Of course, there are others who may feel differently. After all, jobs have been lost, money may be depleting quickly, and the constant fear of possible exposure looms ever ahead. I have even heard sentiments of the uselessness of the entire distancing efforts, as more cases are being discovered. My response to all of these rebuttals is simple: “Having done all to stand, still

stand…” As uncomfortable as it is, staying away from my sisters and brothers is a part of my stand. My isolation from activities and outings is my resistance against a common enemy. I count myself blessed to be able to rest and relax during this time. I count myself blessed to be able to catch up on projects that have languished in the face of a busy schedule. I count myself blessed to be able to interact with family and friends on a daily basis via the internet... persons with whom I have not conversed or connected in a very long time. What an amazing testament to our unity to hear from others: “I didn’t know my son was so funny. He is our entertainment.” “I never knew my husband wanted to be a psychologist.” “We never drink this much water in our life.” “Sorry I couldn’t chat today; was completing a few projects I’ve been putting off.” In our stand against the dreaded COVID-19, we have bonded over games and discussion; family meals and activities. We may not be out and about, but we are busy when it comes to the things that matter. I truly believe that when we emerge from what has become spaces of sacrifice, places of prayer, rooms of relaxation, we will be all the better for it. There is no doubt that this voluntary imprisonment will end. I already foresee services of thanksgiving and revelling in celebration of a reprieve from isolation and alone time. But I am determined to follow a more peaceful lifestyle. I now know that I can live without much of what I considered necessities, and I will ever be proud that for this instance, despite the sacrificial loss of my countrymen, financial uncertainty and change in the routine of life in the Bahamas, we became our brother’s keeper, banded together as a nation and took a stand. God bless you this week!

A creative Holy Week for believers BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

A

S CHURCHES remain closed due the coronavirus outbreak, Bahamians were encouraged to get a little creative in their recognition of Holy Week and Easter. Starting off on Palm Sunday, Catholic Archbishop Patrick Pinder encouraged all the faithful mark the day by placing a green branch on the front door of their homes during the morning; it didn’t need to be a large branch or even a palm branch. Throughout the day, people not only shared photos via the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nassau’s Facebook page, but also on their personal pages to showcase their front doors. “In this time of social distancing and quarantining it was most impressive and heart-warming to see how many persons responded to the invitation to place a palm branch or some other shrub on their front door for Palm Sunday,” said the Archbishop. “This invitation went out because we could not gather in the usual way for our Palm Sunday worship. The fact that so many people responded in this way tells us that so many of us feel the need to express our sense of togetherness even though we are physically separate. It tells us something of the power of symbols which can often speak louder and more powerfully than mere words. It reminds us that when the occasion calls for it we will find effective and potent ways to express our faith.” He said Palm Sunday, properly called Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, is the day believers celebrate the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem just prior to His crucifixion. The palms refer to the Palm Sunday, gospel account of the properly called Palm branches which the crowd cut and strewed Sunday of the Passion on the road as Jesus of the Lord, is the day passed by mounted on believers celebrate the a beast of burden. “Palm Sunday Lord’s entrance into Palm Sunday is the is the start of Holy Jerusalem just prior to start of the most Week which is the most important week of His crucifixion. solemn period of the the year for Chrisyear for Christians. how much we need to express our faith in a loving God, he said. Through the live streaming of the mass via the Archdiocesan Facebook page and later on YouTube on Holy Thursday, viewers were able to watch a modified celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper when the church celebrated the gift of the Eucharist. On Good Friday, they were able to tune in to the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord at 12 noon; on Holy Saturday, April 11, an Easter vigil

was live-streamed, and on Easter Sunday, a mass was also held and viewed. “Because of the lockdown conditions as required by the Emergency Orders currently in effect, we are not able to celebrate these uniquely beautiful and meaningful liturgies in the usual fashion. During these days we can also join in celebrating these most solemn liturgies with the Holy Father, Pope Francis, over the EWTN channel 657,” said Archbishop Pinder.
