T

HE local digital payments company Kanoo has added five churches to its programme for congregants who wish to pay their tithes and make offerings, and for church leaders who want to connect with their flock. “We expect that number to grow as many churches have expressed interest in signing up,” said Nicholas Rees, chairman and co-founder at Kanoo. “The COVID-19 virus has presented a logistical challenge for the Church because believers can’t gather and worship at their home church but instead have to stay home, and either watch services online, by television or listen by radio. This health crisis has also increased the need for assistance, as many have lost their jobs. The Church must be in a position to provide aid to members in need, in addition to meeting its daily operational costs.” Mr Rees said they hope to offer a way for church-goers to connect, as their technology enables users to access to financial services when and where banks are not available. Church leaders, he added, can also communicate with their members, send out notices and inspirational messages via Kanoo. Members who are in a position to do so, can pay their tithes and offerings through the app. “We are all in this together, and we must adapt and support one another in practicing social distancing. Kanoo is happy to help where we can, and we applaud the leadership for their vision and technological foresight. We believe through this collaboration the work of the Church can continue. The Church is undoubtedly a critical pillar in our society. So we felt it necessary to design something unique for them. If we as a company are going to make life easier for Bahamians, we have to have every aspect

the Church as well as other vital entities,” said Mr Rees. The five churches recently added to Kanoo’s programme are: New Destiny Baptist Cathedral, Spirit of Life Ministries, Mount Tabor Church, Believer’s Embassy International, and The Life Worship Center. In an interview with Tribune Religion, President of the Bahamas Christian Council Bishop Delton Fernander of New Destiny Baptist Cathedral said the collaboration was inspired by the wish of some church members to provide support to fellow congregants who have lost their jobs. Bishop Fernander said social

distancing practices have made it necessary to introduce new technology in churches which normally would have taken years to implement. “I firmly believe that at this is a juncture in our life we must hit the reset button; we cannot come out other side of this the same as we came in. I believe in God. I believe that He has a plan for our country and its people. I also believe in the Bahamas and the ingenuity and resilience of the Bahamian people. Together we can accomplish anything because we have always put God first. One day these times will only be a memory. When we recall these days in the future, it should be as a catalyst for positive change in our individual lives, our families, and this nation,” said Bishop Fernander. Mr Rees added that while life has undoubtedly changed significantly, it hasn’t stopped. He said his team is looking forward to more collaborations and dialogue with businesses, churches and institutions.

P

ASTOR Keno Smith has attended and presided over many funerals, however, his father’s 45-minute graveside only service, held on April 17, was by far the quickest he has ever experienced. This is the new reality families who must lay loved ones to rest face during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of them are struggling with the decision whether to host a final goodbye and very condensed service with only 10 people, including the officiant, or deferring funeral arrangements until the coronavirus outbreak has been controlled and restrictions on gatherings are eased. In the case of Mr Smith and his family, they settled on having a short graveside service for their patriarch, Neville Smith, a former police officer who died at the age of 60 on March 26. The Smith family had been holding off on hosting a funeral service until conditions in the country improved, but the lockdown is lasting much longer than they anticipated. “Right after he passed away we had a family meeting. We decided very quickly we would wait. We suspected that by the end of April this would have passed and by May we would be able to have a proper funeral, and by proper I mean having all our loved ones there and in a church. “We all felt he was deserving of that, especially because we grew up in church, he was involved in church and that would have been important to him. We wanted family and friends to have an opportunity to say goodbye,” Mr Smith told Tribune Religion. Mr Smith did not have an opportunity to see his father in the days leading up to his death due to the current restrictions. His father was hospitalised for a week and the government-imposed restrictions allowed for only one person to visit him. “That person was my mother,” he said. “Even for myself, I wanted to host a proper final goodbye service because I did not get to see him to say goodbye. Whereas in normal circumstances a child would have an opportunity to go to the hospital, I never got that.” The Smith family held off as long as possible, but once the government began announcing even more restrictions it became clear they would not be able to have the sendoff they had hoped for. “Initially we had the big funeral planned in our head, but it was not too long until we saw the numbers, the cases rising, and the Prime Minister becoming stricter with his policies concerning the lockdown. “My mother and I had a discussion; we realised this was not going to phase out as fast as we thought. We also did not want to draw it out either and not have a funeral until June or July possibly,” said Mr Smith. Then a representative from Demeritte’s Funeral Home reached out

Families struggle with laying loved ones to rest during lockdown BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

Due to restrictions on gatherings, the Smith family had a to the family about an 45-minute graveside opening date for a seronly service for their vice. The decision was made to hold the funeral patriarch, Neville on April 17. Smith, on April “That was also by birth17. day,” Mr Smith said. Originally, the family wanted to host the service at Evangelistic Temple where Mr Smith serves as pastor. It would have been able to accommodate the 300 to 500 family members and friends who would have wanted to pay their lasts respect. “He has a big family. He has 10 siblings,” said Mr Smith of his late father. Unfortunately, a funeral service large enough to accommodate the entire family could not take place. “We had a 45-minute graveside

Thursday, April 23, 2020 ● PAGE 31 service,” Mr Smith said. “We had a hymn, a prayer, a reading from the Old and New Testament, a tribute. His old friend Bishop Carlos Thompson gave a 10 to 15 minute eulogy. I committed the body and we were done. That was the shortest funeral I had have attended.” It was the kind of service Mr Smith said is foreign to Bahamian culture and one mostly seen in movies. “You have a culture of mostly black people, Caribbean people at that, and our culture leans towards longer funerals. The graveside service is one that you would see more so on TV,” he said. “For me on average funerals are two hours. I have sat throughout a four-hour funeral and I have also had to officiate a three-hour funeral, so a 45-minute funeral was by far the quickest,” he said. Mr Smith believes his father and those whose lives he impacted were cheated out of getting a sense of closure. The funeral service was attended by his widow, four children, grandchildren, and a few other relatives. “I got the opportunity to celebrate and say my final goodbye in that 45-minute service. But maybe the others who could not attend were cheated. Or maybe he was cheated because he did not get the sendoff that he deserved for someone who was so instrumental to me and in so many lives. So, because of COVID-19 I feel like it was kind of unfair,” he said. Mr Smith said while he understands the government’s position, he also believes the plight of families who are facing the difficulty of losing a loved and having to plan a funeral during this pandemic should be taken into consideration. He hopes the government can strike a balance in keeping people safe and also lessening the pressure put on grieving families by the restrictions. “There are huge families in the country...those who want and need the opportunity to say goodbye even from a mental health standpoint,” he said. “I feel in every situation as much as possible you should hear out the stakeholders. Obviously before the initial decision was made all the stakeholders were not consulted. But now that things have been going on I think they should now hear families out, hear what families are feeling. And they should take that along with the new information we have about COVID-19 and then decide to relax some of the restrictions. But I say that as a person who does not have all the information.” He recommended: “Maybe move the number of persons up to 50. Request families utilise big churches that can allow for social distancing, still require people to wear masks, allow them to not sit so closely together. Maybe ask that as a prerequisite for families to purchase sanitisers and ensure the church has sanitation staff on hand to constantly keep areas sanitised.”

MEDITATION BRINGING CHRIST TO THE WORLD BY REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS

T

HIS is the time for intentional discipleship in action like never before. Everything that we thought important has been stripped away. All we have left is our dependence on God to lead us and guide us as we have no idea where we are headed and what will come next. We who are the church, we have been locked out of four walls and have no choice but to spend time alone with God and to ponder who God is calling us to be and how best to operate now. There are more lessons to learn from the Corinthian church experience as St. Paul’s letters shape us into more committed Christians. Let us study to show ourselves approved. Slavery is a repulsive institution but it was very much a reality for the people of this time. The church as slaves of Christ leaves no question as to the nature and level of our expected obedience: “Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord’s freed person; similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings. Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.” (1 Corinthians 7:21-24 NIV). Christ’s crucifixion sets us free from earthly slavery (worthless desires), binding us irretrievably to God’s will. We have all been bought at an incalculable price. We truly belong to God. Each one of us is accountable to God, and to those who have set godly examples for us. Like the Corinthian Church, we are indeed letters of recommendation, and it is our faith that speaks to the work of who have gone before, even as the next generation will reflect our work and witness:“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that

you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”(2 Corinthians 3:2-3 NIV). What will they say of us when all of this is over? How have we led family devotions in our home? What coarse language slips out when we are angry, or perhaps it is pornography that shows up as last seen channels, when our children are looking for their programmes? What is going on behind closed doors even now, although we hold prestigious positions in the church? Are we guilty of being spiritual babes? Is our impurity, infidelity and disobedience to God all signs of the church’s spiritual immaturity today as it was then: “Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?”(1 Corinthians 3:1-4 NIV).

The metaphor of infancy serves as a serious criticism of a congregation which sought to boast of its spiritual advancement. Their inability to discern good from evil suggests they are not of full age, that they are indeed helpless in the world. Are we guilty of the same sin of pride? Are we out of our depth in this time of crisis or are we capable of calling our people to praise and prayer, to confession and conversion? Is it true that our growth in grace has been stunted by our similar attachment to the world? Are we in need of a spiritual father to discipline us:“I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me. For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.” (1 Corinthians 4: 14-17 NIV). Who are the Timothys in our midst today? Can God use us? Are we training for ministry? Are we like athletes who have their eye on the perishable wreath and renounce our rights to certain legitimate pleasures in order to equip our bodies for a grueling race? “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (1 Corinthians. 9:24-27 NIV). This is a call to self-sacrifice lest we be disqualified after helping to equip others. Heavenly approval comes when holiness gives meaning to discipline. Purposeless discipline would indicate that we have

REV ANGELA PALACIOUS lost sight of God, so self-denial in any form must be accompanied by the sanctifying grace of God. As God’s field, our loyalty is to our Creator and Cultivator rather than any mere labourer in the field. We plant the seed of God’s word and water it with baptism, but it is still God who gives the growth. Like the deep rich earth silently accepting God’s gift of seed, we are to accept humbly and gratefully what God gives to each one of us: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-9 NIV). As God’s building we are built on the foundation of Jesus Christ. We each add to the durability of the structure by our faithfulness. Let us rise to the occasion, and bring Christ to the world by speaking and living with hope, peace, joy and most of all love. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Prayer of Jabez MANY of us are familiar with the Prayer of Jabez, which is found in 1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJV). Scripture tells us that Jabez was more honourable than his brothers and his mother named him Jabez because she gave birth to him in pain. (verse nine) Jabez cried out to God in prayer. “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” Jabez, asked God for four distinct requests. Firstly, to bless him. Secondly, to assist him in his work, ie to enlarge his territory. Thirdly, to be with him in all his endeavours. Finally, to protect him from evil and harm. This is a very important prayer to God, and indicates Jabez’s recognition of the significance of God in our lives.

BY CARLOS SPENCER

Submitting to the will of God in our daily living is what we are expected to do, and it pleases Him. This is a definitive demonstration of meekness and surrender to our Creator…..and forms the foundation and basis of all blessings. Some scholars have suggested that the Prayer of Jabez should not be taken to an extreme to request God to yield to our will; our responsibility is to yield to the will of God. Moreover, merely repeating the prayer daily does not guarantee that we will obtain what we ask for, and Matthew 6:7-9 specifically warns us against “vain repetitions”. It is our faith and God’s grace which are always sacrosanct. “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” Matthew 6:9. Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

Ancient texts encouraged hope and endurance when they spoke of end times By KIM HAINES-EITZEN Professor of Early Christianity, Cornell University (THE CONVERSATION) - With streets deserted, hospitals full and morgues struggling to cope with the number of bodies, it isn’t surprising that some people are making comparisons with the apocalypse. The idea of an apocalypse, a time of catastrophic suffering, has existed for thousands of years. Although things seemed bleak during ancient times of crisis, my research on ancient apocalypticism and its long history suggests that cultivating hope during times of chaos was essential. Ancient apocalypticism The word apocalypticism comes from the ancient Greek word “apokalypsis,” meaning a “revealing” or a “revelation.” Scholars define apocalypticism as a social and religious movement that sees the world in stark terms, such as dramatic visions that reveal a battle between good and evil and a coming judgment day. In more general terms, apocalypticism explained the cause of a crisis and how people should respond to it. The future, in most forms of apocalyptic thinking, meant imminent cataclysmic change: a new kingdom, a new world order. Apocalyptic ideas are an important theme in the Bible. The biblical Book of Revelation, for example, was written during a time of political upheaval when Christians were being persecuted. Its dramatic visions included the “woman sitting on a scarlet beast…with seven heads and ten horns.” This vision, which probably alluded to the tyranny of imperial political authorities, was paradoxically a source of inspiration for early Christians, because it gave voice to their suffering. But long before Revelation was written, apocalyptic thinking took root in ancient Judaism during times of significant political unrest, violent oppression and social devastation. The Book of Daniel reflects one such crisis: Parts of this book were written in response to the conquests of Jerusalem

by a Seleucid king named Antiochus Epiphanes. Antiochus desecrated the Jewish sacred temple in Jerusalem in the second century BC by setting up an altar to the God Zeus within the temple’s precincts. The book addresses the suffering of the people, it recalls the history of violence and portrays this history with terrifying visions. But it also speaks of a coming judgment day that will be followed by a new kingdom – a kingdom that is everlasting and stands in contrast to the oppression of earlier times.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, dating to the period just after the apocalyptic writings in the Book of Daniel, spoke of impending terrible battles between good and evil. Much of what scholars know about the Jewish community that wrote and preserved the Dead Sea Scrolls, speaks to a people in the throes of what appeared to be the end times. The origins of Christianity lie in early Jewish apocalyptic worldviews: John the Baptist, Jesus, and the apostle Paul all seemed to have apocalyptic worldviews and preached messages about the

imminent end times. With its emphasis on a coming judgment day, one often accompanied by dramatic and destructive transformations, apocalypticism seems pessimistic. It certainly speaks to dire circumstances, as well as to fear and suffering. Apocalyptic hope But there is an important feature of apocalypticism that is often overlooked and it helps to explain why it continues to resurface throughout history and in our own times. In powerful and important ways, apocalypticism was about hope. The ancient Greek word for hope – elpis – illuminates just how closely associated fear and hope were in the ancient world: Elpis referred to the anticipation or expectation of a good and safe future, but it could also refer to the fear of the unknown. Apocalypticism cultivated a sense of meaning and encouragement through dire circumstances. It sought to make sense of suffering, and it predicted an end to suffering. In doing so, it gave people hope. Above all, apocalyptic thinking bonded people together in uncertain and challenging times. Paul wrote that the judgment day will come “like a thief in the night” and he encouraged his followers to have “steadfastness of hope” in the midst of crisis. The Book of Revelation speaks repeatedly about “patient endurance” and it calls for love and faith during times of persecution and oppression. The Book of Daniel writes poetically of those who “will shine like the brightness of the sky” in the time after the apocalypse. Other apocalyptic texts, such as the Sibylline Oracles, describe poetically a coming light, a “life without care,” and a time when the “earth will belong equally to all.” It is this quality of hope and endurance that might be most important for our own time. • This article is republished from The Conversation, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts. HEALTH AND SPIRITUALITY Part 1: Primitive healing

BY NICHOLAS MORLEY

JESUS heals a blind man “And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? “Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, “And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

“The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?”(John 9:1-8; KJV) Our healing takes 100 percentof our will and is 100 percent God’s will. God wants everyone, especially those who desire to live for Him, to be and remain in the best of health (3 John 1:9). God has done His part in offering us solutions that will keep us healthy, both physically and spiritually. Yet it is our efforts joined with His that are most effective. Christ has and is pointing us back to so-called primitive health and healing that has been tried and proven to bring long-lasting results. Throughout all of the blind man’s life he had taken for granted the very component that held his healing. He had walked on, and possibly slept on the thing that one day finally gave him sight. When Jesus made the clay solution, he intentionally and indirectly pointed us all back to the beginning - back to primitive

health, back to the ground, for out of it comes the curing power for all of our illnesses. Something as simple as drinkingthe adequate amount of water daily can prevent long-term health issues. When something goes wrong with our health, instead of spending tons of money trying to resolve the issue, let us follow the direction that Jesus is pointing us into. Genesis 1:29 says: “And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat’.” It is in the herbs and fruits that our healing lies. However, like the blind man we walk on, trample on, and cut down the very things that hold our healing. The blind man would never have thought that something so insignificant could aid in him seeing for the very first time in his life. All around us are plants, trees and fruits

that we classify as insignificant, but they are much more beneficial than we think. For example, the local Shepherd’sNeedle plant that we often call a weed can eliminate toxins and strengthen the red cells in our blood. Another example are the snake root leaves: by boiling the leaves in water and drinking the water twice daily (morning and evening) can help you in the fight against cancer. To help this process along, avoid refined sugar and dairy products, and as far as possible, adopt a plant-based diet for even better results. Another example is a simple orange; one a day can help prevent the flu. All these things we can find in and around our homes. God has done His part in offering us these wonderful methods of healing. Let us now use them to our advantage to better our health until His coming day. For questions and comments, e-mail routenutrition46@gmail.com.

Outreach efforts continue during lockdown: Holy Spirit Anglican Church continues to give to those in need

THE TRIBUNE MEMBERS of Holy Spirit Anglican Church in Chippingham gave out food parcels and grocery vouchers to church members and people in the community who are in need due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

BY TIFFANY GRANT

O

WING to the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a growing demand for social outreach initiatives. Many Bahamians have either lost their jobs or have beenfurloughed. Holy Spirit Anglican Church in Chippingham is responding to this situation by supplying its members and others in the community with food parcels and grocery vouchers. Father DeAngelo Bowe, rector of Holy Spirit Church, said it’s the practice of the church to distribute 60 to 70 food parcels a month to those in need. In light of the current economic downturn, the church has nearly doubled that amount. “We have already sent out close to 100 food parcels,” said Father Bowe. In addition to the food parcels, they

have introduced the issuing of $25 grocery vouchers that can be redeemed at two mom-and-pop food stores in the Chippingham area. Father Bowe said that the church is hoping that the issuing of vouchers can be sustained over the period of a month. The vouchers are being funded through the generous donations from individuals in various ministries in the church. The groceries for the food parcels are being funded by the church. It is in times like these that our faith must be seen in action, said Father Bowe. “In a time of crisis our church must be present. We must be available for our people in our community and for them to not only hear us in word, but see us in action. This is our response to our people

who have been adversely affected. This is our church saying to our community, where we are based, that we are here. We are here to help you in your time of need as best as we can with what we have,” he said. Being Christian stewards is about being our brothers’ keeper, Father Bowe added. “We are challenged by our faith to meet the needs of our brothers. Jesus challenged his disciples to care for one another, to love one another and to be their brothers’ keeper. We are just trying to live up to the mandate of the Christian faith in this initiative. To respond to human need that is presently around us,” he said. Dr Gill Gibson March, a member of

Holy Spirit Church, is very pleased with the outreach initiative and said that it is “truly a display of a living church in action.” “I get so excited when I see our members come together to help those among us that are in need, especially in would could be a wilderness experience for so many,” she said. As with any community venture, there is the need for partnerships to propel the initiative forward. Father Bowe said the church welcomes the opportunity to partner with the private sector. “Holy Spirit Church is here in Chippingham. We are open and we’re ready to receive whatever donations to assist us in meeting some of these dire needs that surround us,” he said.
