The Bishop’s Chorale returns with a concert of hymns, anthems, Negro spirituals and gospel music
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net
“Born to Die” is the theme for the second annual Bishop’s Chorale concert taking place this coming Sunday, April 28, at Golden Gates World Outreach Ministries.
Starting at 6.30 pm, the Chorale’s aim is to introduce and
promote quality church music for all ages.
The Chorale, founded in February 2023 by Bishop Trent Elliott Davis, is comprised of members from various denominations, making it a diverse ecumenical group.
Markareio K Simmons, assistant to the Bishop, said hopes and expectations are that this year’s concert will exceed last year’s performance and serve
as a reminder of where God has brought the church, and will continue to take its membersthrough hymns, anthems, Negro spirituals, gospel music, and the sacred texts. He said everyone is invited to join in this life-changing experience of an event.
Last year, the Chorale was held under the theme “Sing to the Lord Sunday”. It was a concert in celebration of the Bahamas’ 50th Independence.
Bishop Davis said the night of music celebrated the historical backbone of the nation’s affluence as a Christian nation.
He said if you are a fan of choir music, this was the event to attend.
The concert honoured the church’s foundations, cherished what it has built so far, and celebrated as members continued to increase the impact of gospel music in the country.
While Bishop Davis believes it is important to celebrate Junkanoo and gospel music, he said it is also vital to uphold these great hymns of the church which have helped bolster the faith of the Bahamian people.
For all those interested, tickets for the concert are now available for pickup at the church’s office, Monday – Friday, 9am - 3pm, and on Saturday, 11am - 2 pm.

Rihanna’s religious imagery is a protest against feminine ideals of respectability and decency
By Chris Greenough Reader in Social Sciences, Edge Hill University
(THE CONVERSATION) Rihanna’s no stranger to causing a stir. This time, she’s attracted controversy and outrage with her “dehumanising and degrading” representation of a nun for the Spring 2024 cover of Interview magazine.
This isn’t Rihanna’s first use of religious imagery in her work, either. Take her “sexy pope” outfit at the 2018 Met Gala, for example. It became an iconic look, since immortalised in a Madame Tussard’s wax work, that inspired Vogue magazine to declare “Rihanna won the Met Gala”.
Like the cover image for Interview magazine, some quarters deemed the Gala theme “heavenly bodies: fashion and the catholic imagination” “sacrilegious”.
But the catholic church partnered with the accompanying Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition, lending more than forty papal vestments from the Vatican. The Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, not only sanctioned but also attended the event.
Rihanna hasn’t limited her use of religious symbolism to Christianity, either. In 2021, she was accused of cultural appropriation when she photographed wearing a pendant of the Hindu deity Ganesha.
And the year before, Rihanna apologised for using sacred Islamic text in the music for the 2020 Savage x Fenty lingerie runway show.
Religious symbolism as cultural provocation
Like many high profile pop stars from Beyoncé to Madonna and Lady Gaga to Lil Nas X, Rihanna
uses religious imagery as cultural provocation.
Just as Beyoncé used Virgin Mary imagery in her pregnancy announcements to subvert associations between whiteness and sexual purity, Rihanna parodies the “nunsploitation” genre to play with assumptions about the politics of respectability and taste, sexual abstinence and the sexualisation of women.
Rihanna’s nun-themed look has sparked outcry because it betrays cultural ideas about how women should dress. Religious
imagery is her tool for using playful parody to push back on religious ideals about women’s bodies.
Christianity has long held notions about women’s dress. There are a number of biblical texts which proscribe modesty for women, including 1 Timothy 2:9-10, “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes.”
Codes of dress remain in force in a number of
plots, subvert expectations of their humble, seemingly passive existences.
Popular culture’s nun obsession sparks both interest and outrage because it challenges orthodoxy. And it isn’t just religious orthodoxy that is challenged – it’s also social expectations of women and cultural assumptions about their bodies. The same anxieties and concerns aren’t shared about monks or priests, for instance.
Often portrayed as unattainable or celibate, priests can be presented as “hot” in pop culture without the same level of public outrage as similar representations of religious women.
Nuns provoke anxiety because they are women who exist without men. The sexualisation of nuns results from the perceived rupture of notions of abstinence and purity, often associated with those who have undertaken religious orders. It’s easy – but reductive – to say that this imagery is simply a cheap attempt to attract attention and court controversy. Yes, the images have done exactly that, for all the celebrities listed above too.
Christian denominations today.
Nuns as popular cultural trope
The appropriation of the figure of the nun is deeply embedded in popular culture, including cinematic portrayals of musical nuns in much loved classic films such as The Sound of Music and Sister Act.
In the popular imagination, nuns are disciplined, modest, humble, silent –and sexually abstinent. In such films, viewers’ interest lies in how these nuns, the key actors in vibrant
caused controversy, especially in the case of the Virgin Mary. There is a celebrated collection of icons “virgo lactans” or “nursing Madonnas” in which Mary is nursing the baby Jesus.
Here, the bare breast doesn’t provoke outrage because it is maternally focussed – the Mary feeding the baby Jesus – and the mother is a virgin.
Religion has a significant role to play in contemporary culture. After all, while these symbols and iconography may have their roots in religious traditions, they are also cultural products. Religious symbols and ideas are culturally embedded, so much so that push back against Rihanna – and other celebrities adopting religious imagery – is a symptom of the anxiety that Christianity is losing control over its symbols.
Religious symbolism is also an important way of raising questions and discussion about pressing cultural issues from the relevance of organised religion to social attitudes to women, especially women of colour.
Rihanna’s eroticised nun imagery, then, functions as a protest against feminine ideals of modesty and decency.
Maternal breast is best For example, on the Interview magazine cover, Rihanna partially exposes her breast. Exposed breasts in religious art haven’t
It is telling, then, that a woman’s choice to express herself, her sexuality and take control of the presentation of her body is considered dangerous and blasphemous. This response to Rihanna’s Interview cover reveals much more about social and cultural attitudes to women and their bodies than it does about Rihanna’s bad habits. -

Scout Association week for God, country and people
By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
The Scout Association of the Bahamas, a dynamic youth organisation with a mission to develop the youth in myriad ways, recently hosted its annual week of fellowship, training and information sharing.
Scout Week kicked of last month with an overnight camp at Adelaide campsite, a parade and church service at St George’s Anglican Church, and a game and fun night at the Scout Headquarters.
The events continued with a courtesy call on Governor General Cynthia Pratt. Activities concluded with the annual general meeting AGM and the headquarters located on Dolphin Drive. During the courtesy call leaders President Andrew Pinder, Chief Scout Alex Gibson and Chief Commissioner Lamar Pinder spoke in earnest about the Scouts achievement and its history.
“Her Excellency was most impressed and also shared her history in working with young people (especially in her community). She expressed passionately the need for a collaboration with Urban Renewal Centres. This she said would definitely make a greater impact on our nation’s youth,” a statement by the Scout’s Association said.
During the AGM, a special invite was extended to Keith Bell, Minister of Housing and Urban Renewal, who spoke about the need for greater working relationships with Urban Renewal Centres.
The Scout Association of the Bahamas were established in 1913 to engage, train, and equip boys and girls to become model upright citizens, fostering further growth of the well-being of the nation. The benefits have clearly been evident in the lives of former Scouters who have served in high offices in the community.
Although its history has been long, the Scout Movement still remains relevant in these changing
times. The principles and ideals continue to shape the lives of young people who desire to pledge to its motto and mantra in service to God, country and people.
“It would appear that as a nation, we are confronted in an age of decadence with social ills and violence," said President Warren Andrew Pinder in his message to the Association.
“Let us commit ourselves wholeheartedly to this noble endevour, preparing our youth to become men and women of unwavering character and integrity. Together, let us embark on this journey of renewal, guided by the spirit of camaraderie, service and devotion that defines our Scout movement. With unity and determination, we will forge ahead, laying the foundation for a brighter and more vibrant future for Scouting in the Bahamas."
The Annual Scout Week and AGM ended with an awards ceremony and a fellowship with attendees.

Bahamas Anglican Men Cursillo weekend set for June; seeking suitable candidates
TCriteria for candidates include being an active church member, as they are typically expected to be active in their local Anglican parish.
he Pre-Cursillo committee is seeking potential candidates from the Anglican Men within the Diocese of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands for the upcoming Cursillo weekend, set for June 6-9.
They have to be over the age of 18 and have an endorsement of a pastor; often, a recommendation or endorsement from the candidate's priest. This endorsement helps to confirm the candidate’s active
participation and good standing in their church community.
Candidates have to be open deepening their spiritual life and willing to engage fully in the process of self-examination,
sharing with others, and participating in regular group reunions after the initial weekend.
They should also have the ability to attend the entire retreat: The threeday retreat is intensive, and full participation is crucial. Candidates need to be able to commit to attending the entire weekend, from Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon, without interruptions.
It’s often recommended that candidates have a support system in place, such as a sponsor who has already attended a Cursillo. This sponsor guides the candidate before, during, and after the retreat, helping them to integrate the experience into their daily life.
Given the intense nature of the weekend, candidates should be psychologically and emotionally stable to handle the rigours of the weekend.
The team meeting will commence soon. All male Cursillistas are asked to attend meeting on Saturdays when announced at Mount Olivet Retreat.
Cursillo is a movement within the Anglican Church that aims to strengthen and deepen the faith of its members. The word Cursillo is Spanish for "short course," and the full name is "Cursillo de Cristiandad," which translates to "short course in Christianity." The movement originated in Spain in the
1940s and has since spread worldwide, affecting not only Catholics but also having versions in other Christian denominations.
The core of the Cursillo movement is a three-day retreat that focuses on renewing participants' Christian commitment. During these weekends, attendees listen to talks given by priests and laypersons, participate in group discussions, attend mass and partake in the Sacrament. The talks generally cover topics such as grace, faith, and the fundamentals of being a Christian in the world.
Following the weekend, Cursillo emphasises the importance of forming small groups to continue the growth in faith and to support each other in their Christian lives. These groups meet regularly to pray, discuss their spiritual progress, and encourage charitable activities in their communities.
The goal of the Cursillo movement is to empower lay people to become active and vibrant leaders within their communities, promoting Christian values and moral living. Through ongoing education, friendship, and community involvement, the movement seeks to impact the world positively.

REMNANT TABERNACLE OF PRAISE CELEBRATES
25 YEARS OF SERVICE
- Free outreach fair with community giveback on May 4 -
Twenty-five years after it was founded in 1999, the Remnant Tabernacle of Praise is celebrating its silver jubilee with three nights of services, a community outreach day, and the naming of its first sanctuary building.
Commenting on the church’s anniversary, Pastor Melvin Grant said, “This is indeed an amazing milestone that is meant to be celebrated. ‘He will finish what he started’ - that is our theme taken from Philippians 1: 3-6.”
The country will be hosting the World Relays during the time of the church’s anniversary and Pastor Grant likened the ministry at the Remnant to a race: “Right now, I am serving on the second leg of this pastoral journey, having been passed the baton over a decade ago.”
The Remnant has always maintained a strong connection to the community, and its church building was constructed with the idea of being able to reach and minister to those in need in mind.
It has a multi-purpose campus, inclusive of two sanctuaries, a preschool and primary school, a gymnasium, an indoor basketball court, conference room and kitchen facilities.
A special feature at the church is its Barnabas Closet, which is consistently stocked with clothing and food supplies.
“On any given day, persons will stop by seeking assistance, and although we pray and counsel, we want to ensure that we are meeting people at their point of need,” said Pastor Grant.
In its spirit of community, the church will host a free outreach fair on Saturday, May 4, from 10am to 3pm on the church’s grounds where furniture, clothing, food and more will be distributed to those in need.
“We encourage you to tell a friend and share the information about our free outreach fair, so we can reach as many persons as possible,” said Pastor Grant.
The Remnant will be honouring a number of its members for their service over the years. The church has numerous ministries with a strong outreach component.
The Remnant has been known for its outreach ministry at Retirement Park, outreach in the Family Islands, and its partnership with children’s homes.
“There are many in our congregation that have given unselfishly to our church and our community, and we will be honouring them for their service, through the unveiling of our Commemorative Wall, with some being honoured posthumously,” said Pastor Grant.
“We will also name several classrooms in honour of those who have served.
A big part of our ministry is acknowledging those that have served and blazed trails.”
The anniversary celebrations will kick off on May 1 with guest speaker Dr Cleopatra Williams of Life Changers Ministries International.
The church’s first sanctuary, located on the eastern end of its property, will be named in honour of its founding pastor, Dr Kendal C Stubbs, who served with distinction from 1999 until his passing in 2012.
Bishop Denczil Rolle of Life Worship Centre and Rev Trajean Jadorette, moderator of the Bethel Baptist Association and Pastor of New Covenant Baptist Church, will be the guest speakers on May 2 and 3 respectively.
Pastor Rickeno Moncur of the newly formed Revolution Church will bring the word at the anniversary service on May 5.
The Remnant Tabernacle of Praise is located on number 309 Carmichael Road. Nightly anniversary services will begin at 7pm, and the church’s anniversary service will be held on Sunday, May 5, at 3pm.
The public is invited to attend. Services will also be streamed on the church’s Facebook page.
The church assembles each Sunday at 11am for regular worship services. For more information, contact the church’s office at 361-4294 or follow
Remnant Tabernacle of Praise on Facebook.

THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION HAS DEEP DIFFERENCES OVER HOMOSEXUALITY – BUT A PROCESS OF DIALOGUE, KNOWN AS ‘VIA MEDIA,’ HAS HELPED HOLD CONTRADICTORY BELIEFS TOGETHER
By Lisa McClain Boise State University
(THE CONVERSATION)
In recent years, churches in many Christian denominations have split over LGBTQ+ issues.
In the past six months, hundreds of congregations voted to leave the United Methodist Church over same-sex marriage and whether LGBTQ+ people should be clergy.
The Church of England, the original and largest member of the Anglican Communion –the third-largest Christian denomination worldwide – held a General Synod in London in February 2024 that debated such issues. Bishops, priests and laypeople from every diocese of the Church of England voted down several amendments that opposed liturgical same-sex blessings, and they essentially agreed to disagree on the issues. Participants ended discussions early, concluding it was “too soon” to definitely resolve these issues.
With over 80 million believers in 160 countries, the Anglican Communion has been grappling with LGBTQ+ issues since the 1970s.
Congregations and church leadership disagree on whether homosexuality is contrary to Christian scripture; whether clergy can perform same-sex marriages; and whether openly and active LGBTQ+ people should be ordained to the priesthood and as bishops.
As a scholar specialising in history of the Christianity and gender studies, I can attest that the Anglican Communion’s lengthy, unresolved dialogue is not so unusual. It is a long-standing process for navigating disputes called the “via media,” or middle
way, which has thus far succeeded in holding together people with contradictory beliefs.
Controversies in the Anglican Communion
For decades, diverging points of view over homosexuality and rumours of schism have both confused and polarised believers in the global Anglican Communion. Conservative bishops, many serving in Africa, Asia and Latin America, have repeatedly emphasized that engaging in same-sex relations is contrary to scripture.
This is part of a larger struggle within the Anglican Communion to renegotiate imbalances of power and authority left over from the colonial era of the British Empire. British Commonwealth and North American churches – such as the Church of England and the US-based Episcopal Church – historically dominated discussions of Biblical interpretation, liturgy and church policy.
In the 21st century, these churches still have most of the money in the Anglican Communion, but congregational numbers are dwindling. At the same time, congregations
in Africa, Asia and Latin America are growing. The Church of Nigeria is the second-largest and fastest-growing church in the Anglican Communion. Leaders of these churches expect a greater voice in the communion.
A majority of church leaders in Africa, Asia and Latin America believe that homosexual priests should not be consecrated as bishops and that samesex marriages should not be celebrated. As Archbishop of Uganda Livingstone MpalanyiNkoyoyo summed up in 1998 (a position reiterated by conservative leaders for over 25 years): “We are all quite clear that practicing homosexuality is wrong. That is the orthodox Anglican position.” Views like these carry great weight in the Anglican Communion, even today.
Furthermore, some bishops and believers in Europe, North America and Australia agree and have aligned themselves with conservatives in Africa, Asia and Latin America. But they remain within the Anglican Communion.
Meanwhile, some progressive bishops have
church. It is this Church of England that eventually spread globally with the British Empire to become the Anglican Communion.
argued that when properly interpreted, scripture allows for full inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in church leadership and rituals.
The Episcopal Church in the US has ordained openly gay bishops – most controversially Gene Robinson, former Bishop of New Hampshire, in 2003. In 2015, the Episcopal Church and some Canadian dioceses approved the celebration of same-sex marriages.
In 2016, the primates – the most senior leaders of the Anglican Communion – voted to suspend the Episcopal Church from decision-making on Anglican governance and policy for three years.
The via media
Despite such heated conflicts, the Anglican Communion holds together through the via media. Via media was first mentioned by English reformers who broke from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century. King Henry VIII wanted his marriage to his queen, Catherine of Aragon, annulled, but Pope Clement VII, the queen’s nephew, refused. Subsequently, England created its own national
Early church leaders were influenced by Aristotle’s encouragement of a Golden Mean, a middle path, between vice and virtue, avoiding extremes when making decisions about religious change. Leading reformers such as Thomas Cranmer, archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of three English monarchs, saw themselves walking a via media between the ideas of Roman Catholicism and Protestant reformers such as Martin Luther and John Calvin.
For example, when considering the role of good works, reformers sought a middle path between what they saw as Catholicism’s overreliance on good works as the path to salvation and Protestant reformers’ insistence that good works in and of themselves did not produce salvation. They navigated a path between the two dominant faith traditions in the turbulent years of the Reformation in Europe.
In the 19th century, via media became a way of thinking about internal, rather than external, challenges, such as resolving debates over how to interpret scripture. A controversy over theological issues and the proper way to understand the meanings within scripture was threatening global Anglican unity mid-century, much as is occurring over homosexuality today. Most notably, John Colenso, bishop of Natal in South Africa, sparked dispute when he questioned theological issues such as whether receiving Holy Communion was necessary in order to be saved.
The first conference for such discussions was convened in 1867 at Lambeth Palace in London. There was to be no rule-making. Bishops were to discuss differences, share insights and reinforce community across divisions but without the authority to impose their views on any others. The Lambeth Conferences have been convened approximately every 10 years since, most recently in 2022.
The via media’s effectiveness was evident in 1998 when the conference passed Resolution I.10, which defined homosexuality as contrary to scripture but avoided a schism. The conference used shared ritual to reinforce bishops’ communal bonds and spiritual mission, such as joining in the intimate act of ritually washing one another’s feet. Bishops prioritized unity and agreed that their resolution would not be the end of the discussion. They called for the use of new knowledge to revisit and possibly reinterpret the church’s traditional understandings of scripture.
Holding together
It is this understanding of via media, I argue, that is holding the Anglican Communion together thus far. It does not refer to fence-sitting or finding a palatable middle ground or compromise position. Instead, it seeks to include people with deeply held but contrary beliefs within the same church through common worship and life.
The via media is not easy or comfortable, but members of the Anglican Communion appear committed to remaining at the table so far. The Church of England, for example, made plans for negotiations between people holding differing viewpoints before the Synod meets again in July 2024.
