CANON Basil L Tynes, the current rector of St Matthew’s Anglican Church, has written a guide to help people better understand and interpret the final book of the New Testament.
“From Struggle to Victory - A Lay Person’s Guide to the Book of Revelation” is the name of the new book by Canon Tynes, who is a published author of many religious books.
“Centuries have passed since this Book (of Revelation) was written, and with every generation there have been those who have tried to map out their current events from its contents. Dates, times, prophecies have been made based upon the person’s speculations without performing proper exegetical work on the actual text. As a result, we have had countless predictions and sign-watching that have had very little to do with the written text. What does it mean to perform proper exegetical work on the text? There are four important steps in this process,” said Canon Tynes.
These steps are:
1. Put the book or passage into its historical context.
2. Allow the book or passage to speak to the people of its time.
3. Identify the abiding message of the book or passage.
4. Apply the abiding message to our period and time.
The Book of Revelation, or Book of the Apocalypse, is the final book of the Christian Bible. Written in Koine Greek, its title is derived from the first word of the text: apokalypsis, meaning 'unveiling' or 'revelation'. It spans three literary genres: the epistolary, the apocalyptic, and the prophetic The Book of Revelation is the only apocalyptic book in the New Testament canon. The author names himself as simply "John" in the text, but his precise identity remains a point of academic debate.
“From Struggle to Victory” said Canon Tynes, is an attempt to show
how the revelation to St John the Divine is broken up into several visions consisting of seven parts apiece. The real struggle is trying to interpret the message behind each series of visions in order to make sense of the message.
“When people try to read a first-century book as though God put his people ‘on hold’ for 20 centuries before answering them, it gives us the impression that our God delays hope for centuries before He decides to act,” he said.
The original purpose of the Book of Revelation, Canon Tynes explained, was to bring assurance to the first-century Christians who were undergoing persecution by the state.
“Indeed, if we properly understand the Book, it would generate hope in any and every generation because that hope does not rest on signs and wonders,” he said.
As one parishioner put it, (“From Struggle to Victory”) is an easy read with
some shocking details and surprises.”
Copies may be obtained from the St Matthew’s Anglican Church office on Church Street at a cost of $25.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1988 by Bishop Michael Eldon in Christ Church Cathedral, Canon
Tynes has fulfilled many pastoral, civic and international duties over the decades, including serving as assistant curate at Most Holy Trinity in New Providence; as chaplain and family life teacher at St John’s College; as parish priest at St Peter’s in North Long Island and St Christopher’s in Rum Cay; as part-time religious studies teacher at North Long Island High; as rural dean of the Southern Bahamas; as rector of St George’s in New Providence; as canon missioner for the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands; as chairman of the Commission on Mission, Renewal, and Ministry, and in recent years, as rector of St Barnabas in New Providence.
Some of his other published books include “Taking the First Few Steps - A Marriage Preparation Series”; “ReAffirming our Anglican Heritage”; “Laying a Solid Foundation”; “A Firm Faith – A Confirmation Guide”, and “Training Manual for Chalice Bearers, Lay Readers and Catechists.”
Canon Tynes is married to the former Sonia LaVonne and they have two sons, Benjavarae and Christos.
There is strength in unity. That was the resounding message of Salem Union Baptist as the church community gathered to commemorate the 50th Independence anniversary of the Bahamas.
The recent concert featured “harmonious melodies and soul-stirring rhythms.” Hosted by Reverend Heuter B Rolle, the evening's festivities, organisers said, were a testament to the power of music when it comes to uniting hearts and spirits.
The main event, "Many People... One Voice," created by Antonia Wilson and Alison Mason-Rolle, featured internationally renowned artists Antonia Wilson and the Legato Vocal Ensemble, who “mesmerised the audience with their extraordinary talent and unwavering passion.”
“From traditional hymns to jazz-infused gospel, and from classical masterpieces to contemporary hip hop-infused melodies, the ensemble's performance transcended genres, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendances,’ said Travis Edgecombe, public relations official for the organisation.
Rev Rolle was the moderator for the concert.
Joined by esteemed musical guests, including the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band; the Bahamas National Youth Orchestra, conducted by honouree Aaron Rollins Neely; the Bahamas National Youth Choir, directed by honouree Dexter Fernander, and
Saxophonist Marvin Smith, the evening was a celebration of unity, culture and faith, said Mr Edgecombe.
“In a poignant moment of remembrance, Rev Clinton Minnis paid tribute to the ‘Fantastic Seven’ - trailblazers of Bahamian music who have passed on but left an indelible mark on the nation's cultural landscape: Cleophas Adderley, Raymond Antonio, Patricia Bazard, Edward Clement Bethel, Lee Callender, Audrey Dean-Wright, and Kayla Lockhart-Edward were honoured for their invaluable contributions to music in the Bahamas,” he said.
During the concert eleven men were honoured for their outstanding contributions to the gospel industry and community as artists and musicians, as their tireless dedication to spreading the message of faith and hope through music was recognised.
While the event was open to all free of charge, attendees generously contributed to support two worthy causes: the Ranfurly Home for Children’s transitional homes project and Pat's Senior Citizens Home & Daycare Centre.
Their generosity will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need within the community.
“The ‘One Voice’ project extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who attended ‘Many People... One Voice’ and contributed to the success of this momentous occasion. Through the power of music and unity, we reaffirm our commitment to building a brighter, more harmonious future for the Bahamas and beyond,” said Mr Edgecombe.
