IT’S TIME TO GET READY! By Mike Lightbourn
FASTEN your seatbelts! The 2016 hurricane season officially opens on June 1. The National Hurricane Centre predicts 14-named storms this year with eight becoming hurricanes and three developing into major storms of category three or higher. I am sure Bahamians will be vigilant, bearing in mind the terrible devastation Hurricane Joaquim dealt some of our islands, especially Long Island, Rum Cay, Acklins, and Crooked Island, last year. It’s important to understand that while the season covers the summer months, hurricanes can happen at any time of the year. In fact, the Atlantic already recorded a hurricane, Alex, in January of this year.
A LIFE ALTERING EXPERIENCE
We know from experience that storms can alter the life of not just people, but whole communities. This is especially true of people who live or work in coastal or low lying areas. We know that “low average” seasons can also spawn some of the most deadly hurricanes in history, such as
the 1992 season when Hurricane Andrew pummelled North Eleuthera as a Cat 5 hurricane and trounced the Berry Islands with 150 mph winds. Andrew was responsible for three direct fatalities and caused $250 million in damage in the Bahamas and untold damage in South Florida. So it’s crucial for residents to remember that it just takes one storm to decimate whole communities. NOW is the time to implement the following steps.
SEVEN DAYS
NOAAH, the hurricane weather service, has outlined a seven step plan to prepare in advance of potential storm threats. DAY 1 – Sunday. Determine Your Risk Is your property vulnerable to wind and water damage? If the answer is yes, take whatever steps you can now to deal with this possibility. Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem as there are a lot of low lying areas inland. Day 2 - Monday. Develop an Evacuation Plan If you live in a vulnerable area, identify where you, your family and your pets will go in the event of a hurricane. Where will you secure your vehicle and/or boat?
DAY 3 - Tuesday – Insurance Check Is your homeowner’s insurance sufficient to cover repairs or even replace your home? What about your vehicle or boat? Your insurance may not cover flooding. Remember, insurance companies won’t issue policies if the country is under a storm threat. DAY 4 - Wednesday - Gather Disaster Supplies Assemble enough water, non-perishable food, medicine and pet supplies to last each person and pet in the family a minimum of one week. Make sure you have cleaning supplies on hand. After water and food, Joaquim victims appealed for bleach to deal with the filth the storm caused. DAY 5 - Thursday - Reinforce Your Home Make sure your home and hurricane shutters or hurricane proof windows (and frames) are in good repair. DAY 6 – Friday - Identify TRUSTED sources for hurricane information. The Bahamas Meteorological Department is your official source for information. The Met Department will cover the situation as it relates to hurricane watches, warnings, strikes and reporting for the country, including individual at risk islands. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center

DAY 7 – Saturday – Finish Your Written List Don’t wait until a hurricane threatens the country and the shops are jammed with people. Complete your hurricane plan and stock up on nonessentials, such as extra drinking water, batteries, canned food, diesel for the generator, a camp stove (if you have an electric stove and no genny), ice chests and so on. These supplies will get used and won’t be wasted, hurricane or not.

YOU’VE GOT LICE APHIDS, which are commonly called plant lice is possible the most prolific plant insect as there are said to be a variety of Aphids for almost every different plant group there is. Aphids are soft bodied pearshaped insects with long legs and antennae and may be green, yellow, brown, red, or black depending on the species and the plants they feed on. A few species appear white, waxy or wolly due to the secretion of a waxy white or gray substance over their body surface. Most species have a pair of tubelike structures called cornicles projecting backward out of the hind end of their body. The presence of cornicles is what distinguishes aphids from all other insects. Usually you will see wingless Aphids but they can also have wings which proves useful for relocating when a feeding area is over run by competitors. Aphids can be found alone feeding but very rearly they often feed in very dense groups. Aphids feeding on the leaves or buds of a plant will cause stunted growth or development and yellowing of the leaves. Their feeding will also cause leaves to become misshapen and curled but most significantly some Aphids transmit a virus that can cause great loses especially in fruits and vegetables. The least dangerous but most immediately obvious damage that Aphids cause is that their feeding releases a chemical call Honey dew that drips onto the leaves of the plant this then causes a black mold to form all over the leaves called Sooty Mold

which spoils the look of your garden and makes it difficult for the plants to make their on food via photosynthesis. TREATMENT One of the blessings, to be ironic, with Aphids as opposed to White fly for example is they are rather easy to eradicate. By simply getting a garden hose with a strong stream you can wash Aphids off a plant. Also their soft bodies are susceptible to treatment by mixing a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid to a gallon of water and spraying them for an organic solution. Then there is certainly Chemical insecticides that will kill them. However, be aware that whatever method you choose to use against Aphids, these landscape pest will eventually rebound and require your attention yet again to push them back. So see you do have Lice but so do most of us!
