Bowling Nationals: Get ready for the final showdown By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net
I
t’s getting down to the final showdown as bowlers get into the swing of things this week to secure their spots in the live television roll off for the rights to be crowned the champions of the Bahamas Bowling Federation’s National Championships at Mario’s Bowling Palace on Sunday. The nationals got started last week with defending champions Driskell Rolle and Richard ‘Ritchie’ Pyfrom surging to the top of the standings after the first two game blocks. However, those positions could
change when the roll-off continues tonight with the men’s D bowlers and Wednesday when the A, B and C bowlers compete in their third blocks as the bowlers vie for the top 16 spots in the fourth round on Friday. “The numbers are down from last year, but the excitement is still brewing,” said Clayton Gardiner, tournament director. “We have some new persons who have been performing very well. “Alcondo Hepburn took the early lead, but Ritchie Pyfrom came back in the second block with an average of over 200 to catapult him back into the lead with more than 1,000 pinfalls. Alcondo wasn’t that bad. He shot a 999 in that second block.”
THREE BAHAMIANS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT IN CLASS A MINORS By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE trio of Bahamians in Class A minor league baseball have moved into their second month of the season as they attempt to adjust to the increased workload of minor league promotion. Anfernee Seymour and Lucius Fox are in their first seasons of Class A while Champ Stuart is in Class-A Advanced. Seymour is in the midst of his most productive stretch of the season for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the South Atlantic League. In his last 10 games, Seymour has hit .294 with seven runs scored and two stolen bases. Seymour, who starred for the rookie Batavia Muckdogs in the Gulf Coast League last season where he played in 64 games at shortstop with a batting average of .273, was called up in April to the Grasshoppers. Now with the shift to outfielder defensively, through 39 games thus far, Seymour is hitting .235 with 22 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and 37 stolen bases. He has recorded a slugging percentage of .242, an on-base percentage of .280 and an OPS of .522. The 20-year-old, 5’11” 165-pound Seymour was taken by the Miami Marlins with the 197th pick in round seven of the 2014 MLB Draft. This offseason he has moved up from the Marlins’ No.26 top prospect to No.13. Also in the Class A South Atlantic League, Lucius Fox made his much-anticipated pro debut this season for the San Francisco Giants. With the Augusta GreenJackets, Fox is listed as the Giants’ No.4 prospect and has eight hits in his last 10 games. In a May 15 matchup against Greenville, Fox flashed the brilliance the franchise expects to see since they signed him to a lucrative free agent contract out of high school. In his first three hit game of the season, Fox went 3-5 including a double and triple, with one RBI. After an 0-3 start in game one, Fox had the best game of his young career in game two when he went 2-5 with a home run, five RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. In 31 games thus far, Fox is hitting .216 with 21 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, slugging .302, an on-base percentage of .326 and an OPS of .628. The 6’2” 170-pound shortstop was the most anticipated signing of the Giants International Prospect class last July. The Class-A leagues, the South Atlantic and Midwest, feature a cross

Pyfrom currently leads with a total of 1,988 pins and an average of 198.80. Hepburn follows with 1,971 pins and a 197.10 average, trailing by 17 pins. David Slatter, one of the most consistent bowlers, is sitting in third with 1,845 pins and a 194.50 average. He is behind the leader by 43 pins. Rounding out the top five are Leonardo ‘Lee’ Davis in fourth with 1,907 pins and an average of 190.70 to trail the leader by 81 pins, while Ken Brathwaite Sr occupies the fifth spot with 1,870 pins and a 187 average. Brathwaite is 118 pins out of first place. One of the perennial bowlers to watch, Sonith ‘Kemosabee’ Lock-
hart, is sitting in 15th spot with his total of 1,761 and a 176.10 average, which has him 227 pins out of first place. “The top 16 bowl an additional block, so he’s not out of the woods just yet,” Gardiner said. “One of two persons, who didn’t bowl in the A, B or C category, could push him out depending on how they bowl on Tuesday and Thursday. Kemosabee will have to bowl a tall round on Wednesday to get in the standings.” Only the top 16 bowlers will stay alive to bowl on Friday when the finalists will be determined for Sunday’s live television roll-off. On the ladies’ side, with a limited field of competitors, Rolle has established her top position with a

total pinfall of 915. Jonice Lockhart follows with 793. Last year’s runner up Janice Hoyte is in third with 836. Angela Smith holds onto fourth with 902 with her daughter Tara Culmer completing the top five with 873. “There are only 12 women competing and only the top five will advance to the final on Sunday,” Gardiner said. “So it will be interesting to see who gets in and who will be on the outside looking in.” Gardiner said they are expecting a real competitive showdown for the rest of the week as they gear up for the grand finale on Sunday at Mario’s Bowling Palace. He wants the bowling community to come out and cheer on their favourite players.
FLAG FOOTBALL NATIONAL TEAM SEARCH HITS NEW PROVIDENCE By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE national team search for flag football finally reached the capital as scores of hopefuls came out to the College of the Bahamas hoping to earn a spot on the final roster. The third stop on the tryout tour produced a number of promising results, despite early inclement results from the combine, according to Mel Ferguson, national team administrator. “The talent was every bite as we had anticipated,” he said. “There were four best recorded tryout times, one coming from the men’s side and two from the women’s. Theran “Matrix” Evans ran a 4.54 in the 40-yard dash and Carlene Johnson ran a 5.19, both of which were national tryout records, Carlene Johnson, Dyaria Knowles and Jade Knowles all ran a 7.50 in the 20-yard shuttle which too was a national tryout record.” At each tryout, players will undergo a series of combine tests including the 10-yard shuttle, 20-yard shuttle, three cone drill, the ‘W” drill, 40yard dash, standing broad jump, vertical jump and finally throwing and receiving skills. Tryouts took place in Exuma and Grand Bahama prior to New Providence. The schedule concludes on Friday (May 27) in Abaco. “The Selections Committee was very impressed with the competition as well as the enthusiasm displayed by the athletes attempting to make the first ever flag football national team,” Ferguson said. The team roster will be named on May 25 and any additional players from the Abaco combine will be named on May 28.

Pro ball player Altidor gets a taste of success By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net SUCCESS at the pro level came almost immediately for Bahamian basketball player Kevin Altidor. Altidor and his Gijon Basket 2015 club claimed the championship title of the Spanish Primera Nacional basketball league and with the win, received promotion to the EBA League. In his first season with the club, Altidor made an immediate impact and that continued in the finale when he scored 17 points in his team’s 77-50 win over Castrillon. After a closely contested first half, Gijon broke the game wide open in the third quarter with a 17-2 run. They took a 64-36 lead into the fourth and easily held
on down the stretch to secure the win and advancement. Altidor, a 6’5” forward originally from Marsh Harbour, Abaco, played collegiately at Roane State Community College and later with the Young Harris College Mountain Lions. Altidor played two seasons for the Mountain Lions (201315), averaging 14.1 points and 7.9 rebounds in 53 games with 67 blocked shots and 73 steals. He averaged 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds as the Mountain Lions advanced to the semi-finals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament last year where he was named to the All-tournament team. Altidor attended Abaco Central High School before concluding his high school career with the CC Sweeting Cobras. In an interview with the Aba-
conian during his JuCo tenure at Roane, Altidor cited incidents in his childhood neighbourhood of Pigeon Pea as the motivation to further his education through basketball and escape negative surroundings. “Every day in the gym, I thought about it [the incident], about wanting to make a person out of myself. It drove me to try to make it. I was willing to go the extra mile, even try for the NBA.” He said: “I want to be an example for all the younger kids growing up in the Mud or in the Peas.” Altidor joined the Spanish club in November 2015 and the team was in the midst of a middling 0-4 start to the season. The Primera Division is the fifth level in the Spanish league with the best teams promoted to Liga EBA.

RASHEED CAREY (seated on the left) with his team Asa Miami Silver Storms, after they won the NJCAA title.
College tennis aces making a name for themselves in NJCAA Nationals GRAND Bahamian Rasheed Carey and Shannon Francis are playing very well for their respective college teams in the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men’s Division National Championships. Carey’s team, Asa Miami Silver Storms, was able to win the national title in their programme’s first year of NJCAA competition. He played well as the No.5 five player for Asa Miami, but lost 4-6 3-6 and in doubles play, the sophomore and teammate Zarazua also lost 3-6, 3-6. ASA Miami narrowly edged out the 45-point effort from runner-up Seminole State (Oklahoma) with a 47-point victory. The Silver Storms have been crowned king of the courts. The college’s women’s team also won the NJCAA which speaks volumes for the tennis programme at the institution. Francis, playing for Prairie State College, lost his NJCAA singles consolation match 8-5 as flight 3, but put up a very good fight playing the No. 6 seed in the tournament. He played No. 1 flight in doubles. Francis, along with his partner Diaz, won the first round but lost to Tyler College 7-5, 6-7. The tie break was 5-7. region. “These two men have done very good in college tennis play this year and we expect more great things from Rasheed and Shannon in the future,” said Perry Newton, the public relations officer for the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association. “They have represented their countries previously on national teams and now with the excellent training they are receiving in college they are advancing on the college men’s tennis field. “This year we have had a plethora of young Bahamians who performed well in tennis college play and we expect this to continue well into the future as the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association continues to encourage and mould the upcoming tennis athletes.”

FREEDOM FARM BASEBALL GETS A FINANCIAL BOOST BAHAMIAN Baseball programme Freedom Farm received a financial boost to help them bolster their competitive sporting programmes, a network of leagues reaching over 600 young athletes. Freedom Farm received sponsorships from longtime supporter CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank to assist with equipment and operational expenses. According to Marie RodlandAllen, managing director of CIBC FirstCaribbean, the bank continues its faithful support due to the organisation’s exemplary dedication to the development of youth through sports. “Sports play an integral part in developing discipline, self-esteem, and opportunities for children. Each of these organisations has demonstrated an amazing commitment to advancing Bahamian youth of all backgrounds through their activities, to proven results. CIBC FirstCaribbean is proud to be a continuous supporter of outstanding programmes like Freedom Farm,” she said. CIBC FirstCaribbean has supported Freedom Farm for 10 years. The annual sponsorships provide uniforms and equipment for at least one team each year, focusing on teams in the 11-12 and 13-15 year divisions.

section of players like Seymour - moving up from the short season and rookie leagues, as well as those like Fox - the occasional experienced first-year player. These leagues play a full, 140 game schedule, which runs from the first week of April through the first week of September. In the Class A Advanced league, Champ Stuart continues his stint with the New York Mets organisation. Through 38 games in the Florida State League, with the St Lucie Mets, Stuart is hitting .244 with 13 RBI and five stolen bases. He has also totalled an on-base percentage of .331 and an OPS of .733. The four-year veteran received the highlight of his career when he got the Major League call-up in spring training. Stuart made an appearance as a pinch runner in the final Grapefruit League game for the Mets in a loss to the Washington Nationals. In his second season in Class A-Advanced, Stuart started out the season with a promising multiple hits in five of his first eight games. In 2013, Stuart was selected out of Brevard College by the New York Mets in the sixth round with the 176th pick. The Class A-Advanced level is often a second or third promotion for minor league players, although a few high first-round draftees, particularly those with college experience, begin at this level. These leagues play a complete season like Triple-A and Double-A, April through early September.

Lakers bank on Simmons and good free agents I’M not trying to get ahead of myself here in this one, a few more things need to fall into place. Specifically who goes No.1 in the upcoming NBA Draft. Hypothetically let’s say it plays out like this. Philadelphia, being Philadelphia, don’t go with the obvious and selects Duke forward Brandon Ingram at No.1 (thank God they didn’t take another centre) allowing the Lakers to grab ultratalented Louisiana State University forward Ben Simmons. The Lakers roster that will be inherited by incoming head coach Luke Walton will look like this: Guard: Jordan Clarkson Point Guard: DeAngelo Russell Forward: Julius Randall Forward: Ben Simmons Bench Forward: Anthony Brown Forward: Larry Nance Jr Guard: Lou Williams Forward Brandon Bass will exercise his player option and opt out of his contract, to become an unrestricted free agent. Guard Nick Young and all his baggage will be traded in a salary dump to a team that
wants his expiring contract. So that leaves the Lakers, who have the most money to spend in free agency ($68.5m to be exact), eight spots to fill with potential superstar starters and key contributors to make up a potent bench. In the weeks leading up to free agency I will highlight potential free agents who can be added to the mix, that will put the Lakers back into relevance and playoff contention. • Here’s a look at my first four - two starters and two key pieces to the bench. DeMar DeRozan Raptors An unrestricted free agent, DeRozan is the top realistic option for the Lakers. He’s from Los Angeles and, although he loves Toronto, the lure of playing for the Lakers gives the team a shot at landing him. He will command a max deal no matter what, and the Lakers can afford him. He would fill a major need at Small Forward, although his high-volume style of shooting might not be the best fit for the Lakers. Al Horford - Hawks Much like Festus Ezeli, Horford will fill a big need

at centre. He will turn 30 this off-season but should have several years left in him. Another max player, Horford might very well leave Atlanta. He would be a great fit in Los Angeles and the Lakers will likely offer him a max deal.
Festus Ezeli - Warriors The Lakers lack a true center, Ezeli is due for a pay day, and Luke Walton’s presence as Head Coach could help the Lakers land him. Ezeli adds a complimentary defensive physical

presence to go along with talented third-year forward Julius Randall. Also Ezili has never had the opportunity to start and shine. He is definitely on the rise at only 26 and not to mention his familiarity with Walton, he can get the younger Lakers to buy into Walton’s philosophy which makes him an even more enticing addition. Kent Bazemore - Hawks Bazemore actually played for the Lakers near the end of the 2013-14 season. He has become a totally different player in Atlanta, developing into a true ‘3-and-D’ player.
That’s exactly what the Lakers need, and Bazemore shouldn’t break the bank or be a max contract, so it makes perfect sense and quality bench depth. The Lakers lack players on the wing and Bazemore would help fill a major need. Until next week, go hard or go home! • Naughty presents ‘Mischief and Mayhem in da AM’ from 6am to 10am, Monday to Friday and ‘The Press Box’ sports talk show on Sunday from 10am to 1pm, on KISS FM 96.1. After waiting a comedic beat, he added with a chuckle: “And it’s still not the case, so it’s good.” Sure, by then, it was easy for the 2015 champion at Roland Garros to kid around, because he barely avoided making the sort of history no athlete would embrace. Eventually warming up on a gray, chilly afternoon, and twice coming back from a set down, Wawrinka edged 59th-ranked Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 yesterday to sneak into the second round. “I know that physically
I’m stronger than he is, and I knew that he was going to decline a little bit,” said the No. 3-seeded Wawrinka said. “That’s exactly what happened.” Something similar transpired several hours later, when No. 2 Andy Murray faced an even greater deficit, dropping the first two sets against 128th-ranked qualifier Radek Stepanek, who at 37 is the oldest man in the field. Their match didn’t finish, though, suspended until today because of darkness. After the net-charging Stepanek raced to a 6-3, 6-3 lead, his legs began to falter, and Murray started to work his way back into the match. The two-time major champion took the third set 6-0, and was up a break at 4-2 in the fourth when they stopped. As dusk began to arrive — there are no artificial lights at Roland Garros — Murray accused his opponent of gamesmanship, complaining to the chair
umpire that Stepanek was trying to delay the proceedings. “How many things can he do to slow the play down?” Murray said after Stepanek headed to the locker room before the third set, adding: “Keep an eye on how long this toilet break is.” After returning to the court, Stepanek changed shirts, drawing a warning for wasting time. If he was hoping to force the match to a second day, it worked. While Stepanek can rest and regroup before resuming his bid to make Murray the tournament’s first No. 2 seed to bow out in the first round since Pete Sampras in 2000, Rosol had no such opportunity to gather himself. Only four times in the history of the clay-court tournament, which began admitting non-French players in 1925, had the defending champion even lost as early as the second round — most recently Juan Car-

(AP) an Open, before getting No. 2 a year ago at Roland Garros by beating No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final. And Rosol? He never has made it past the third round in 20 appearances at major tournaments and began the day with a 110-136 career record in tour-level matches. Still, this would not have been the first significant and surprising victory of his career: Rosol defeated No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the second round at Wimbledon in 2012, displaying the
los Ferrero in 2004. And early on against Rosol, nothing went Wawrinka’s way. Even his terrific backhand was problematic, including one shank that landed well long to end the third set. In all, Wawrinka made 46 unforced errors, 17 on the backhand side, creating the possibility of what earlier was a tough-toenvision result for all sorts of reasons. Wawrinka is a two-time Grand Slam title winner, having broken through with his first at the 2014 Australi-

same sort of go-for-broke, flat groundstrokes and intimidating serve he used to such great effect against Wawrinka. Consider, too, also the past record between Wawrinka and Rosol. They had played four times previously, with Wawrinka winning each time, most recently on Friday on red clay at Geneva en route to the title there. But 72 hours later, on the same surface but in a far more important setting, Wawrinka was troubled by Rosol.

total of three teams made up of 41 players from the Baha Juniors Football Club is headed off to Orlando, Florida, this weekend to participate in the annual Disney Memorial Soccer Tournament. Last year, organiser Marcus Cheetham only took the under-9 team to the tournament but, this year, he’s expanding the contingent to include the under-10 and under-12 teams as well. “The club wants to expose these kids as much as possible to soccer, whether it’s locally or internationally, so the kids know how they compete against other players in the region,” Cheetham said. “It’s the end of the season, we are combining a bit of fun so they are going to Disney and they will play in a tournament where in three days, they have more than 1,100 soccer games. It goes from ages eight all the way up to 19 with three different levels at each level.” Baha Juniors will be the only international team competing in the tournament, which Cheetham said is there way to expose the local players to a system in which they can be viewed for the possibility of securing athletic scholarships in the future. The Bahamian contingent, which will be ac-

companied by 44 adults, is scheduled to leave town on Friday and return on Tuesday. Each team will play a total of three games between Saturday and Sunday and, if they advance, will play in the playoff and championship on Monday. Cheetham said the preparation for the trip began since September last year. He noted that the response has been such that they were able to basically take
over the Jet Blue flight. He added that a sports group in Orlando has made all of the ground arrangements for their five-day stay. Hopefully in the future, Cheetham said they would like to branch out and travel as far as Europe to compete. “We just want to encourage the kids to see what it’s like,” he said. “Most of the kids who went last year will be going again this year. So
we are really excited about taking the team to Orlando this year.” The teams travelling this year comprise of the following: • U-12 team, coached by Marcus Cheetham, include: Kyle Marshall, Amand Andorra, MacKenzie McDowall, Joshua Agreeb, Maverick d’Arville, Nathan Blackman, Hayden Buckner, Jason Spurlock, Luca Bonetti, Massimo
D’Alessandro, Connor Knowles and Adrian Aguilar-Montecelos. The team will play out of the Silver Bracket A, which will include the FCBESCOLA Forida Blue, Strictly Soccer FC Select and West Pines United FC Jimenez. Three divisions make up their field. • U-10 team, coached by Brent Roberts and Edward Bethel, are: Colin Glinton, Jason Cates, Brandon
Jones, Cameron Eldon, Bronnan d’Arville, Finley Chappell, Deron Ferguson, Luke Johnson, Elias Bhatti and Jaxon Bethel. The team will play out of the Bronze II Bracket C, which comprises of No Miami Maccabi PBS-FC/XC Teal, Sunrise Elite and Pinecrest Premier. There are four brackets in their field. U-9 team, coached by Sean Raine and Mario Pavan, are: Joshua Cates, Jordan Cheetham, Luca Pavan, Rueben Edgecombe, Enea Gervasni, Conry Raine, Lorenzo Andolina, Christopher Hartnell, Alex Eneas and Owen Cates. The team will compete out of the Silver II Bracket C, which includes LWR Premier FC, Real Miami Madrid and West Pasco FC. There are also a couple of players who will be travelling and participating on the Fort Lauderdale Select teams, including Zachary Knowles, Brittany Pilcher, Vivian Saddleton, Daniella Gomez, Julia Raine and Isabella Gomez. “We are excited about taking these teams to the tournament,” Cheetham said. “We know that they will represent us very well and have some fun at the same time in Disneyland.”
