A renewed focus on technology for re-elected Christians Council president BY JEFFARAH GIBSON TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

A

S THE returning president of the Bahamas Christian Council, Bishop Delton Fernander, pictured, has made a commitment to assist churches with the integration of technology in their communications and outreach efforts. Communications technology has proven especially vital as local churches were forced to close their doors for

months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Those churches that did not previously prioritise technology integration struggled to connect with their parishioners during the lockdown. Bishop Fernander, who leads the flock at New Destiny Baptist Cathedral and has been delivering Sunday messages through live streams while also facilitating drive-in church services, said this is something he will encourage local churches to utiltise. “Times have been extremely hard for many Bahamians who are still grappling with the destruction left behind by killer storm Dorian and now the economic fallout from the coronavirus and the stringent measures used to diminish its spread across the globe,” he said. “One such measure was limiting church gatherings to ten persons, which meant that pastors and other church leaders had to use modern technology

to connect with their members and to spread the gospel. As we move forward, as president of the Bahamas Christian Council, it is my intent to assist and encourage the council and churches to effectively integrate technology into its routine communications and outreach efforts.” The Bahamas Christian Council held elections to fill the positions of its executive board on Tuesday. “I offered myself to serve in the position of president and was returned to that post unopposed once again. I want to extend my gratitude to the members of the council for the confidence they have placed in me to speak for the country’s Christian community at such a pivotal time in our history,” he said. Another item on Bishop Fernander’s agenda is strengthening the family unit in the Bahamas. “The book of Joshua 24:15 states, ‘And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ In that vein, I intend to place intense focus on strengthening the family unit and their relationship with Christ. The family is the bedrock of our nation and should we succeed in its fortification we will simultaneously address some of our social ills.”

Bishop Fernander also intends to advocate strongly to ensure that whenever possible the nation pauses to collectively come together for a time of prayer. “Understanding that in order for our land to be healed, we must humble ourselves, pray, turn from our wicked ways and seek His face as stated in II Chronicles 7:14. If there were any time that we need the covering of a merciful Saviour over the affairs of the Bahamas it is now,” he said. “The work of the church in the Bahamas grows by the day with so many persons in need of assistance, and to know that the same God who brought us this far will surely bring us through again. I take very seriously the great need for people to feel the love of God through His servants and the directive for Christians to be the salt of the earth, as it says in the fifth chapter of the Book of Matthew. As churches reopen their doors, we must also open our minds to new ways of reaching people and fulfilling our mandate as followers of Christ.” Other newly elected officers of the council include first Vice President Pastor Mario Moxey, second Vice President Bishop Gregory Minnis, third Vice President Rev Carla Culmer, fourth Vice President Rev Gloria Ferguson, secretary Rev Dr Beverly Strachan, treasurer Rev Dr Ronald Campbell and administrator assistant Rev Dr Roslyn Astwood.

Meditation Learning while teaching BY REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS

T

O BE intentional about Christian education is to search one’s soul for the meaning of what it is to a Christian and how this meaning should be shared. As a former primary school and Sunday school teacher, I know what it is to have knowledge and to be faced with the barriers of different levels of cognitive development, varying times of readiness, and confining curriculum. I know only too well the strengths and weaknesses of education, without the added complication of trying to teach what is beyond comprehension. Religious socialisation at home and in the church helps to create an environment for learning about faith, but it is not automatic. Something can still be missing, and that something cannot be inherited, bought, won or absorbed, as if by osmosis. The gift of new life is God’s gift, a personal gift, a sign of grace, which is offered to an individual to be developed within community. We who seek to educate others about the faith need to humble ourselves before God, asking to be channels of love and not stumbling blocks to faith. How did you come to faith? Who was a channel of love for you and who or what were stumbling blocks? The guiding principle of Christian education ought to be the transforming activity of God in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. In this way, we are all being educated by the divine teacher and subject to ongoing transformation. Obedience and faithfulness become key virtues after discernment, in order to hear and obey as we live life in the fourth dimension of the holy. The Holy Spirit is described in scripture as the advocate (counsellor) and the spirit of truth who instructs us about God’s will and purpose (John 14: 16-17, 26 NIV): “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever - the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. …“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach

RELIGION you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” The other three dimensions of existence become transformed when we abide in the fourth dimension and live by faith. Our human nature is made more Christ-like by the presence of the Holy Spirit, and we are free to choose a Christian lifestyle which is compatible with this new nature. Within the Christian community this choice is nurtured and celebrated, and ongoing prayer continues to shape us, while expressing itself as loving service. We go out into the world to share the love of God and the vision of the kingdom contained in the Good News of the person and work of Jesus Christ. In this way, Christian education and Christian formation become two sides of the same coin. Are you living a deliberately Christian lifestyle? Are you being shaped by your prayer life? With what kind of loving service are you involved? In order for a child to learn to speak, there needs to a linguistic environment where conversations flow naturally with persons sharing and listening to the thoughts, ideas, opinions and feelings of others. For a child to speak about things relating to God in a language that captures Christian experience and belief, there needs to be an environment in which this occurs naturally. Faith is nurtured by concrete encounters with other witnesses of faith in an atmosphere of loving acceptance and gentle encouragement. How easily do you share your faith in, and personal experience of God? Are you comfortable praying out loud in an impromptu manner? The more we can teach as we learn, the better our children will be able to learn and then teach others. We have to lead by example. Bearing this in mind, we all have to remain aware of the powerful force of socialisation which promotes cultural rather that Christ-like norms: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12: 1-2 NIV) This means that at times we will experience conflict, pain and rejection as Christians when we seek to please God first. This is the price to be paid by those who follow in the footsteps of Christ, in order that culture may be transformed gradually by the leavening presence of the Holy Spirit in the world. This is where the Christian community (koinonia) becomes a vital source of strength and comfort. We cannot experience this fellowship if we remain at home in order to worship alone all of the time. Once our weekend lockdowns

are over or it is safe for us to worship together as before, let us seek to learn together and teach each other what we learn from the Holy Spirit in our midst. The next generation needs to see faith in action at home, in the church, and

HE GodSent Muzic group is hosting a live show on Facebook this Friday which they hope will give people a chance to stand together as brothers and sisters to worship God and give Him praise. “It will also give people an opportunity to forget about the cares of the world and to leave them at the feet of Jesus. I feel extremely good to see this vision God has given me coming together as my aim is to make God proud and ensure He receives all of the glory from this,” said Maurice “DJ Godson” Fawkes, founder of GodSent Muzic. The virtual event, “Before the Throne: Up Close & Personal,” will kick off at 8pm on Godsent Muzic’s Facebook page. It will feature performances by artists under the organisation’s management, including Latisha Sweeting, Akeem Gardiner, Oslien Jadorte, DJ G-Yo, Cara T Newton, Shemeka Gray, Discyple, and Minister Godartiste from Jamaica, as well as DJ Godson himself. There will also be a special surprise by international artist Sherwin Gardiner from Trinidad, a veteran gospel singer. “This live event is designed for us to go before the throne with worship, praise, adoration and repentance; to minister to persons and expand God’s kingdom. At the beginning part of the lockdown I was very silent and took a lot of time just to reflect on what God was saying. I also used the time to build my relationship with God. During that time is when the mandate came to me to do a live event to minister to the hearts of persons who feel like giving up, or to those who feel the weight of the world on their shoulders due to losing a job, being laid off, depression or even sickness,” said DJ Godson. He said everyone who chose to be a part of the event is doing their part to make it all come together by opening up their personal worship experience to the public. DJ Godson said they all feel really good to be doing the work of the Lord. “I am looking for persons to be inspired and encouraged; to have a worship and a personal encounter with God at the end of the night,” said Oslien Jadorte. Latisha Sweeting added: “I am looking forward to the viewers to experience God through worship in a way that they never experienced Him before. Many of them are worn out, some are discouraged and some have already given up. But we come with hope; for the spirit of heaviness put on the garment of praise. When we the artists release the sound, I believe that God’s power will fall and the viewers will be compelled to worship God. They will be restored in Jesus’ name.” DJ Godson said those who miss this
