Finding a church home
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter
acadet@tribunemedia.net
USUALLY at the end of church services, the leading pastors and bishops would ask visitors and viewers streaming liveif they are looking for a church to call home - stick around after to find out how they can join.
Tribune Religion spoke to a number of Bahamians who shared their thoughts on what it means to find a church home.
“Most Bahamians grew up in homes that involved going to a church every Sunday, but the church you were raised in as a child may not necessarily be the church you grew to attend as an adult. There may be many reasons why you chose to change your church home. I know for me, I wanted more,” said Christine Johnson.
She said growing up in a Catholic Church on the island, everything became a bit bland for her.
“Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to Christianity, the word is the
word no matter how it is preached. But apart from the word of the day on that particular Sunday, everything was just so predictable. I wanted more praise and worship. I believe that is where it was lacking due to resources on the island. I still visit every time I am home, and I am happy to see the ministry is growing in many ways,” said Christine.
For Vanessa Stubbs, she enjoys visiting other churches to experience a feeling for the
atmosphere, services and programmes.
“I think for me, the most important part when looking for a church to call home, is the praise and worship; what is the music ministry like? I think that sets the tone for what we will experience every service. When the music ministry is on point, they use their unique gifts to usher you into praise and worship. It makes the service more personal and more of a spiritually satisfying encounter. Then obviously the next thing for me, would be if the
pastor or whoever speaks delivers messages that are based on the bible, and not on their opinions or feelings,” said Vanessa.
Another local, Tammy Burrows, encouraged people to keep on searching if they haven’t found a church home as yet.
“Finding a church home can be stressful. But I promise it is well worth it. Church can really be anywhere , in your home, your car - anywhere. But there is no better feeling than the fellowship amongst believers who are uplifting each other
in one setting. I’m a single woman with no kids so I go to church by myself on Sundays. And there are times I enter that building with a lot on my shoulders, and leave with what feels like a weight lifted off my shoulders. After the word is preached, our bishop usually goes into an impromptu speech about the message - and that is always my favorite part as he relays relevant parts to current issues of the world," said Tammy.

THE PREFECT of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Cardinal Michael Czerny, meets the journalists at the Vatican press hall, in Rome, on March 30, 2023. Cardinal Michael Czerny urged European voters Monday June 3, 2024 to remember their own migratory roots in showing sympathy to people forced to flee their homes, ahead of European Parliament elections this week where migration is a big issue.
Vatican cardinal urges Europeans to remember own migratory roots ahead of European elections
ROME

A TOP Vatican cardinal urged European voters Monday to remember their own migratory roots and show sympathy to people forced to flee their homes, days ahead of an election for the European Parliament in which migration is a big issue.
Cardinal Michael Czerny, Pope Francis' point person on migration
was speaking at the launch of the pope's annual message for migrants, the theme of which this year recalls God's presence in every Christian's faith journey, and God's accompaniment of people on the move.
Asked if he had a message to European voters, Czerny recalled the theme of the pope's message and said that a lot of talk about migration today is fueled by fear, ideology
and propaganda about a "global crisis" that he says doesn't exist.
"It would also be useful for Europeans to recognize their own migratory roots," he added. "We know from science that the human race wasn't born here, and many Europeans hail from people on the move.
"It's truly a shame that after two or three generations families forget their migratory roots and those
who helped them," he said. "Now it's our opportunity to help."
Francis has made reaching out to migrants a priority of his pontificate and has called for receiving countries, within their means, to welcome, protect, promote and integrate migrants. But many politicians have capitalized on Europeans' fear of migrants, including in Italy, where migration regularly
features prominently in election campaigns.
Czerny also recalled the biblical exodus of Jews and the figure of the Good Samaritan in urging Europeans to show Christian charity toward migrants.
"With the same or similar conditions and pressures, suffering and losses, each one of us would have left home much sooner," he said.
As Czerny was speaking officials confirmed that
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni would travel to Albania this week, ahead of the weekend vote, to check in on migrant detention centers that Italy is building in Albania. Meloni has defended the controversial deal to outsource the migrants to Albania while Italy processes their asylum claims as part of her strategy to deter people from making the risky Mediterranean crossing.

New Baptist Convention president seeks to “revamp and restore”
By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
AS the 12th president of the Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention (BBMEC), Bishop Delton Fernander is seeking to revive, repair and restore the convention.
The bishop is seeking to carry out this mission in union and solidarity with fellowship churches across the Bahamas.
“The Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention, the organisation that we all love and respect must change course to ensure that this organization along with its history, assets and future potential are preserved and strengthened. As followers of Jesus Christ and proud baptists we must understand and accept that it is time to revive, repair, and restore this convention before it is too late."
Fernander, who is also Bahamas Christian Council (BCC) president (through 2026) and is senior pastor at New Destiny Baptist Cathedral, was voted in during early called elections held on Wednesday, May 29, during the 89th convention of the BBMEC.
He received 54 percent of the votes, beating out Bishop Carrington Pinder who polled 30 percent of the votes and Reverend Dr Philip McPhee who received only 16 percent of the votes. McPhee was seeking to retain a leadership he inherited in 2023 after the death of the sitting president Rev Lloyd Smith.
The new president called on all Baptist churches, associations and Christians at large to come together and join its revamped and refocus mission.
He said: “The book of Isaiah 58:12 states, ‘those from among you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, the Restorer of streets to dwell in.’
To put it plainly, we must revive
the spiritual fellowship that is our convention. The text says those from among us. As a convention we can tap into the tremendous talents and gifts that are in our church leadership and pews.”
Bishop Fernander said as opportunities for evangelism and training can be provided through collaborative efforts to see its mission and goal realised.
“I have spoken to the cochairs of Urban Renewal and through collaboration with our own Rev Dr Diana Francis have
agreed beginning this summer in bringing together our churches to perform outreaches on parks in this communities. Which I believe can be the beginning of us leading the country again into some national youth and community outreach like we delivered through Baptist Summer Fest. Let’s be a part of God’s soul wining and world changing team. We will rebrand our convention to reflect the dynamic contribution Baptist have made and are making to our country.”
Bishop Fernander encouraged not only the Baptist denomination but the Christians in the entire country to join forces to revamp and restore. He said: “We will repair and rebuild our convention headquarters at its former location on Baillou Hill Rd location. Our school buildings are in need of repair. Together we can systematically repair the broken physical structures and the generational gap in our convention. We will cultivate relationships with Baptists internationally
for the benefits of Bahamian Baptists. Convention and our institutions should be the place of training and development. We will revive our churches to fulfil the mandate set out in the Bible and to positively impact our communities.
"We have no more time to wait, we must act and do so together. This is our convention, with God's guidance we will revive, repair and restore it together." The new BBMEC president holds the BCC presidency through 2026.

Respecting our labours
By CARA HUNT
Tribune Features Writer cbrennen@tribunemedia.net
The Labour Day holiday was started to give Bahamian workers a Friday off giving them a longer weekend as a reward for their efforts.
The Bible often speaks about labour and the work that must be done in God’s vineyard. Many Christians believe that while it is important that you
show your love for God through being a good worker.
This week, Tribune Religion asked our readers what that means to them.
“I think being a good laborer means that you exhibit all the characteristics of Christanity, being kind and respectful and being honest in the workplace.
You can’t call your self a Christian if you are stealing on the job or being disrespectful to your boss and your co-workers,” Janae said.
Lynette adds: “I think God uses the work place to definitely test your faith, because we all know people try you on the job, staff and customers alike, and so you have to remember that you are a child of God and don’t let the negativity to cause you to not do what you are being paid to do, because at the end of the day, everything that you do is for the honour and glory of God."
But readers also say there needs to be a balance.
“You cant be so involved in your work that it takes you away
from the other important things in your life as a Christian either, the Bible talks about how there is a time for everything and speaks to making use of your time wisely as well,” Alex told Tribune Religion.
Here are a few of the scriptures that speak to labouring for the Lord: Colossians 3.23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
Proverbs 14:23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
Proverbs 18:9 One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.
1 Corinthians 15:58
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
Proverbs 12:14 A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his words, And the deeds of a man’s hands will return to him.
