FINDING PURPOSE IN LATER YEARS OF LIFE T BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET
HE advanced years of life are viewed as the time to retire from work, sit still, focus on leisure activities or make preparations for death. It is rarely seen as a time of new discoveries, exploration, or finding one’s purpose. Contrary to what many may believe, Samita Ferguson says age matters not when it comes to finding one’s call for their life. In fact, she encourages people who are older and even the elderly to seek God’s will for their lives. Mrs Ferguson, who heads the CHAMPS organisation and is a leader at the Church of God of Prophecy Love Centre, is hosting the “PathSAMITA way to Purpose” Zoom session this FERGUSON Sunday featuring guest speakers Dr Sharlene Smith and Kimeline Clement from Church of God of Prophecy, Trinidad and Tobago. later years, Mrs Ferguson also has a present-day point of reference. “My uncle, Bishop George Thompson; he is fulfilling his purpose, but in his early 70s he is on the verge of completing his doctorate degree. That makes me smile because he did not let age define him in his pursuit. Further, it is rather encouraging to know that anything is achievable once you push, persevere and believe,” she said. And life, Mrs Ferguson added, is much more fulfilling once a person discovers the reason they were created. “Life without a purpose is a ship without a sail heading to no man’s land. Life without purpose is going around a merry-go-round and becoming dizzy upon completion. There is no sustainability in one who is not pursuing their God-given purpose. Some people are not drawn to their purpose because they are living their lives incomplete or are comparing themselves to someone else and are missing out on the wealth that is wrapped up within them,” she said. “When one has tapped into their purpose they will feel complete
- emotionally, mentally and physically.” Mrs Ferguson said now is an ideal time for anyone to sit before God and find out what they have been called to. She said many people are confused, unsure of what moves to make and steps to take, and can benefit from God’s direction. “Sometimes timing and seasons may be factors to cause a shift, but the goal is never to give up. For example, a few years ago I had a vision to do a television show called ‘Faces’; a show which spoke about one’s life story, trials and triumphs. It was a packed show with various acclaimed Bahamians from varying professions, whether musicians, activists, educators, et cetera. There were a few challenges that I faced when it came to airing the shows. Years later I have not lost hope...the scriptures state: ‘Thou it tarries, wait on it’. To add to that, I know the appointed time will come, it is just a matter of time,” she said. “In pursing one’s purpose remember to always have a plan, ensure that your daily life is filled with meditating on His purpose and will for your life.”

Anglican Bishop calls for Bahamians to follow health protocols; not to despair “DO not be discouraged! Press on! Do not see defeat! Claim victory in God!” - This is the message of the Rev Laish Boyd, pictured, Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands during these unprecedented times. “Once again we are faced with increased restrictions in the recent lockdown in the Bahamas, and increased measures in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Whatever we may think or feel about these moves, we have to acknowledge that the daily spike in cases over the last few weeks in the Bahamas, and in the last week in the Turks and Caicos Islands, call for a strong response,” the Bishop said in a statement released this week. “The economies of the world, and of our two countries, are already challenged as a result of COVID-19. We have to flatten the curve, and get the virus under control in order to allow businesses to

resume fully and to revitalise our economies. We also need to stop the spread and to rebuild our local economies to ready ourselves for full reopening of our borders. Our tourism industries have ground to a halt and we need to be in a position of readiness for the safe restarting of that industry.” Both economies of countries, he said, depend heavily on stemming the spread of the coronavirus. “Failure to resume could spell disaster. What is our Christian response? We are confident, positive and victorious because Jesus is alive,” he said. In the face of all of this, Bishop Boyd said the Church must press on and, as Paul wrote, “not lose heart!” (2 Corinthians 4:16). “It is difficult and challenging for us all. Honestly, we must admit that, but let us ask God for grace to carry on. Believe that we are here in this time, and in these circumstances, for a reason. In the situations of life we often ask, ‘Why me?’ or ‘Why now?’ or ‘Why this?’ God can use us where we are for His purpose, and has a role for each of us even in the midst of the pandemic. Support the systems, mechanisms, and the front-line workers during this pandemic. Pray for them all, encourage and support them at every opportunity. Follow the protocols,” he said. “We are all tired of restrictions and protocols, but they are important. When more people in more places practice more protocols, that increases the safety net because it limits widely the opportunity for the virus to spread. Each of us is
an important link in our own community, island, national and global chain. So let’s increase our passion and ramp up our fervour in observing the protocols: wearing masks, social distancing, washing/ sanitising hands, staying at home if we do not have to go out, wiping down highlytouched areas, seeking to build up your immune system, staying in if we have cold/flu symptoms, et cetera…And let us encourage everyone whom we meet to do so as well. These simple practices remain vital as we seek to protect others and ourselves and to make our world safer.” Following the health protocols, the Bishop said, is putting into practice in our everyday lives what the Bible says” “Love your neighbour as you love yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39) “One of the reasons that we are in the serious predicament that we are in is because many of us have not been following the protocols, especially the wearing of masks and social distancing. Let’s correct that and encourage others to do so. Lives depend on this. Encourage someone today, and then encourage them again tomorrow. In these uncertain times many people, we ourselves included, experience uncertainty, doubt, times of questioning, discouragement, panic, fear, depression and hopelessness. Let’s be encouragers so that others may find the Grace to carry on. Trust God. While the events and circumstances of our time are startling and alarming to us, our God is not surprised or alarmed. Lesser mortals than you and me have trusted in Him down through the ages, sometimes in even more disastrous circumstances than these. So let us trust in God now more than ever before. Trust Him! The hymn
writer wrote: Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus Oh, for Grace to trust Him more,” he said. Bishop Boyd also emphasised the importance of prayer. “The Bible says, ‘Pray without ceasing’ (1 Thessalonians 5:17). When we pray the comforting presence and the almighty power of God comes to bear on the circumstances of our lives in transformative ways. Let’s not pray only for ourselves and our troubles, but for others and what they are going through, for governments, business people and ordinary citizens and residents everywhere. Remember that our worst day is someone’s best day – and there are some really ‘worst’ days out there. Pray for our two countries, and for other nations, as we all face the adversities, challenges, pressures and the systematic injustices, et cetera, brought on by or highlighted by the pandemic. The old gospel hymn says, ‘If we never needed the Lord before, we sure do need Him now’,” he said. “Act or do. Try to do the things that are right in the circumstances of your everyday life. Do some tangible act of charity for someone, to lighten their burden and to lift their spirits. One part of right action that we cannot forget is making good decisions with our resources. Let’s try to save and to stretch what little that we have. Let’s not be wasteful or extravagant. Let’s plan for the long haul rather than just thinking about tomorrow. Sisters and brothers, let’s press on together, loving and supporting each other. Remember that God is still God, and that we are still the Church.”
something. There is a contrite and fundamental movement away from the past, and a decision made to do things differently in the future. One is remorseful of past behaviour; a new modus operandi comes into effect. Repentance enables absolution and forgiveness from sin and there is no other activity that can achieve this. Isaiah 55:7 (KJV) states: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his
thoughts:and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” It is conceivable that one might face the wrath of God, if God is not pleased with one’s attitude or actions. 2 Chronicles 7:14 is a powerful and useful prescription. “If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Luke wrote in Acts 3:19: “Repent ye therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” Matthew 3:1-2 tells us “in those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Jeremiah wrote in Jeremiah 31:19: “Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, ye, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.” After David sinned with Bathsheba he confessed to God and repented. He wrote, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and
renew a right spirit within me.” We cannot err in the face of God, and continue to do so, and expect God to be pleased. This applies to each and every one of us, myself included. God requires that we repent, refrain from our ungodly ways and look again to Him. The consequences of being obstinate and disobedient to God’s word can be dire and costly. Jesus admonished us to repent in Mark 1:15: “And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” God is patient as He waits for us to repent and turn to Him. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 2:4: “Or dispisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearence and long-suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance.” 1 John 1:9 tells us “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to clense us from all unrighteousness.” God loves us so much that despite our propensity to sin, we can still repent and confess our sins to Him, and be forgiven. Repentance opens the door to God’s grace, mercy and His blessings. Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

Meditation Shaping a new nation Part II BY REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS WE have just come through Hurricane Isaias, with more systems possibly on the way in the coming weeks, and COVID-19 is still very much with us unfortunately. We are truly under siege. What are we learning? What will be teaching about this time? How do we make our God and our ancestors proud of us? How do we help our families, friends and fellow citizens cope with our current reality? How do we prepare our children and grandchildren for an always uncertain future? How is our faith sustaining us right now? We also celebrated Emancipation Day on Monday past. This is often a distant event with which some may not concern themselves. What does it mean to you? How close do you feel to your slave or slave master ancestors? How do we still bear the scars as a people? To what degree have we been able to set ourselves free? Where are you still enslaved? From what do you wish to be emancipated? Last week, I proposed that we engage in a search for some answers as to the role of Christian Education and its application in our lives today when it comes to shaping a new nation. We considered that: A. It tells a story B. It prepares Christians for a vocation Today we will explore the following: C. How it offers guidance in life crises D. It produces positive cultural change Guidance in life crises In order to have a strong sense of vocation people must have faith in God’s goodness towards them, and trust that God is with them in all things. As there are certain times of real disorientation as a person develops, it is imperative that the church, through its worship and programmes of Christian education, support the individual with information and affirmation. Do you feel supported by your church? With a firm base during times of great stress, when pre-creation chaos seems to have returned to the world of the individual, Christians need not fear being carried away from their vocation. They learn to receive love as they ought to give it, gaining new perspectives on the pressures which others endure, and refining themselves in the fires of suffering which are an essential part of human existence. How is your faith sustaining you at this time of pressure, refinement and suffering? If during puberty, school-leaving, engagement, marriage, child-birth, unemployment, promotion, death, separation,
divorce, et cetera (these great times of transition), Christian education enabled the asking of questions, the finding of answers where possible, and the support of the church to be evident, then more adults would involve themselves in the church. All too often, the complaint is made that the church and its Christian education attempts are aimed at guiding children in their faith and development, ignoring the fact that learning and growth are life-long experiences. Are you availing yourself of all the educational opportunities to grow in faith and spiritual maturity being offered today? If not, why not? Producing positive cultural change Christian educators must be made aware of the many wide areas which can and ought to be addressed in Christian education. Since it is total health and wellness for which we strive, the church through its spiritual and moral training experiences and exercises, is able to bring healing to those within the church community in order that members better understand the afflictions of their neighbours, and the remedies available through contact with God’s healing love. We have challenges to day on every side. There are the usual personal development issues just discussed, along with the extra health matters to compound our previous comorbidities, the accompanying economic fallout, the social crises that can follow in the home and now the weather. Yet, our God is in the midst of all of this. We are to draw on our Scriptures, hymns, past sermons, prayers and every other spiritual discipline to overcome in this season of spiritual warfare. Use the times to get your armour on and face every Goliath which attacks. The Christian home is the best place to socialise the next generation for the vicissitudes of life, and build a new nation. Our loving God wants us to live a life of grateful praise and loving service. From this vantage point, prayerful and faith-filled family members are able to affect their neighbourhoods with love and kindness, and this example may then be duplicated in the wider community. Like a series of concentric circles, we touch the lives of all whom we meet even as we practice social distancing. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Spiritual Facebook show seeks to help those in despair
W
ITH the clear and decisive motto “I am enough”, gospel singer and author Latisha Sweeting is spreading a message of hope and encouragement through her weekly show on Facebook. The live show, hosted on the Latisha Sweeting Ministries International page, was started before the pandemic, but has proven a valuable resource during this time of uncertainty, she said. “The Facebook ministry was birthed from a place of restoration and healing. During the pandemic was when the show increased in views. There were many people messaging me with suicidal thoughts, depression, marital issues and so much more. The pandemic only caused the numbers to increase. People needed help, and many nights I would stay up and counsel individuals because they felt that they were all alone. All I had was life experiences and the word of God to help them through,” Latisha told Tribune Religion. The mandate of her show and her organisation, she explained, is to teach the word of God by bringing restoration to the broken-hearted and healing to those who are wounded. “The series caters to individuals who have always been cast out...People who

People who have been raped, molested, and those who are divorced. This series caters to the whole person and every situation you could imagine. I teach on topics such as spiritual authority, binding and loosing, breaking generational curses, intimidating intimidation, life after divorce, rejecting rejection and so much more,” she said. And it seems her method of inspiring hope is just what many Bahamians need at this time. “The feedback has been amazing. Since the inception of the virtual ministry we now have a 24-hour prayer line that can be accessed by way of the Facebook page Latisha Sweeting Prophetic Voice. There you will find intercessors who will pray with you. And every month we have people that would partner with the ministry with their finances. We use this money to help families with food and medication. The ministry has travelled from the Bahamas to the UK, Canada, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, the Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States. People all over the world are being blessed,” she said. Latisha feels a virtual platform like

hers is desperately needed in current times. She believes for too long, people have only been depending on a prophetic word to get them through the hard times, but they must realise that after the prophetic word they also have to still live their lives. “They have to know how to deal with life’s situations according to the word of God. Many people are living in fear, living in adultery, lying, killing, et cetera. But they can receive the healing they need if they go back to their first love. It is my prayer that through this series, people will be empowered by the word of God and repent so that they can walk in dominion,” she said. “The Bible is a manual for our lives and many people are lost because of the lack of knowledge. Empowering them to read the word and apply the word to their lives will bring them into all truth. With this they will become self-sufficient; they will not live in fear and they will know how to live as one in their communities and families. Many people have not yet come to know God because they simply feel as though He will never accept them because of their sins. But this series is here to help them know they are enough and God will perfect the
things concerning them.” In addition to hosting her Facebook show, Latisha is looking forward to releasing a new book this September called “Overcoming Pain.” She said it speaks of her very own testimony, all that she endured and how she continues to stand. It is also a book of instructions based on the wisdom of God from the word of God. “I know that this book will give the readers a different outlook on life and it will bring them from a state of panic into a place of freedom,” she said. She is also currently working on a new gospel praise song in the Junkanoo style called “Celebration” and will be releasing a worship song called “I Hear you Voice” in 2021.
