RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS

Vatican expels founder of Peru’s Sodalitium religious movement after probe into abuses, corruption

THE Vatican on Wednesday expelled the founder of an influential Peruvian religious movement, the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, after the Catholic hierarchy spent more than a decade of downplaying allegations of sexual and psychological abuse and financial corruption against him and his community.

The decree against Luis Fernando Figari came after Pope Francis last year ordered an investigation into the Sodalitium by the Vatican’s top sex abuse experts to get to the bottom of the scandal. Previous commissions and investigations had failed to fully address the group’s problems.

According to the decree by the Vatican’s department for religious orders, which was posted on the website of the Peruvian bishops conference, Francis gave his explicit authorization to expel Figari from the movement, even though canon law didn’t precisely cover his alleged misconduct.

Figari’s behavior was “incompatible and therefore unacceptable in a member of a church institution, as well as causing scandal and serious damage to the good of the church and of the individual members of the faithful,” it said. The expulsion would restore justice harmed by Figari’s behavior “over many years, and would protect in the future the individual good of the faithful and the church,” it said.

Figari founded the movement in 1971 as a lay community to recruit “soldiers for God,” one of several Catholic societies born as a conservative reaction to the left-leaning liberation theology movement that swept through Latin America, starting in the 1960s. At its height, the group counted about 20,000 members across South America and the United States. It was enormously influential in Peru.

Victims of Figari’s abuse complained to the Lima archdiocese in 2011, though other claims against him reportedly date to 2000. But neither the local church nor the Holy See took concrete action until one of the victims, Pedro Salinas, wrote a book along with journalist Paola Ugaz detailing the twisted practices of the Sodalitium in 2015, entitled “Half Monks, Half Soldiers.”

The Sodalitium later commissioned an outside investigation that found Figari was “narcissistic, paranoid, demeaning,

vulgar, vindictive, manipulative, racist, sexist, elitist and obsessed with sexual issues and the sexual orientation” of Sodalitium’s members.

The outside investigation, published in 2017, found that Figari sodomized his recruits and forced them to fondle him and one another. He liked to watch them “experience pain, discomfort and fear,” and humiliated them in front of others to enhance his control over them, the report found.

Still, the Holy See declined to expel Figari from the movement in 2017 and merely ordered him to live apart from the Sodalitium community in Rome and cease all contact with it. The Vatican was seemingly tied in knots by canon law that did not foresee such punishments for founders of religious communities who weren’t priests. At the time Salinas called it a “golden exile.”

On Wednesday, Salinas called Figari’s definitive expulsion good news.

“I hope it is the beginning of more important news that will culminate in the suppression of this mafia-like sect,” he told The Associated Press.

It remains unclear if any more decisions about the Sodalitium, which controls significant economic interests, would follow.

However, the expulsion puts into question the very foundation and continued existence of the Sodalitium, since such religious movements are always tightly bound to their founder and his or her original inspiration for the movement.

The Sodalitium, for its part, distanced itself from Figari in a statement Wednesday, welcoming the decision to expel him and saying it had wanted him expelled back in 2019. The group insisted it was undergoing a renewal process that will allow it to continue without Figari or his influence.

“Figari is the historical founder of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, but he is not a spiritual reference for our community,” the current superior, José David Correa González, said in a statement. “We want to continue to work so that this gift may be at the service of the evangelizing mission of the church.”

Such a sentiment is similar to the one espoused by the Legion of Christ religious order. The Vatican in 2010 opted to put the Mexican order through a Vatican-mandated process of reform rather than suppressing it after determining that its founder, the Rev. Marcial Maciel, was a pedophile, drug addict and religious fraud who built a cult-like movement to hide his double life.

Figari’s expulsion is the second personnel step by Francis after the Vatican’s abuse investigators — the Rev. Jordi Bertomeu and Archbishop Charles Scicluna — returned from Peru last year. In April, Francis accepted the resignation of a Peruvian archbishop and Sodalitium member, Piura Archbishop José Eguren, who had sued Salinas and Ugaz over their reports about the Sodalitium.

In addition to Figari’s own abuses, their reporting had exposed the alleged forced eviction of peasants on lands in Eguren’s diocese by a Sodalitium-linked real estate developer.

In comments to AP, Ugaz called the decision to expel Figari of “paramount importance” since it exposed how the Peruvian church — with a few exceptions — “did nothing to listen to the victims who have been denouncing the Sodalitium since 2000.”

Is breastfeeding Biblical?

Health

the South Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists

Many thoughts may conjure in our minds when we hear the word, breastfeeding. However, Oxford dictionary defines it as the action of feeding a baby with milk from the breast. While the breast has a few functions, the Canadian Cancer Society stated, “The main function of a woman’s breasts, as is to make, store and release milk to feed a baby. After giving birth, hormones in a woman’s body stimulate the glands in the lobules throughout the breast to make milk. The ducts carry the milk to the nipple. Milk passes from the nipple to the baby during breast-feeding.” This is such an intriguing process! It could have only been designed by our Creator, God. Breastmilk is super essential for the nutrition of all human beings during their first years of life.

From the very beginning breastfeeding was designed by our Creator as the method to feed human babies. Here are 4 biblical references where mothers breastfed or nursed their babies:

Hannah breastfed her babies.

This is evidenced in 1 Samuel 1:21-24, “The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there forever.” Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word.”

So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh.

And the child was young.”

Sarah breastfed Isaac as evidenced in Genesis 21:7-8 (ESV), “And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age. And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.”

Naomi breastfed Obed, (Ruth and Boaz’s son) as we see in Ruth 4:16 (ESV), “Then Naomi took the child and laid him on

her lap and became his nurse.”

Naomi was what we refer today as a wet nurse, a woman who breastfeeds another woman’s baby. This practice is basically acceptable worldwide.

Jochebed nursed her children.

In Exodus 2: 7 – 9 (ESV), we see where Moses was breastfed, “Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Go.”

So the girl went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.”

Here are four (4) biblical references of the practice of breastfeeding or nursing demonstrating that this was thee acceptable practice: Luke 11:27 (ESV), “As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!”

1 Kings 3:21 (ESV), “When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead. But when I looked at him closely in the morning, behold, he was not the child that I had borne.”

Isaiah 49:15 (ESV), “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.”

1 Thessalonians 2:7 (ESV), “But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.”

Sadly, we live in a culture where the practice of breastfeeding seems to be looked on as old fashioned or as unattractive by some. Many mothers have disregarded this practice because they feel that breastfeeding their babies may cause their breasts to look aesthetically unattractive. Ellen White in the Ministry of Healing, page 83, wrote, “The best food for the infant is the food that nature provides. Of this it should not be needlessly deprived. It is a heartless thing for a mother, for the sake of convenience or social enjoyment, to seek to free herself from the tender office of nursing her little one.”

Even today the importance of this biblical principle is still being promoted and carried out.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) (2023) stated, “The US Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 recommends that infants be exclusively breastfed for about the first 6

ATTENDEES at

The Big Latch On, a recent event to encourage breastfeeding as part of National Breastfeeding Week

months with continued breastfeeding while introducing appropriate complementary foods for 1 year or longer. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization also recommend exclusive breastfeeding for about the first 6 months with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods for up to 2 years of age or older.” The Dietary Guidelines for The Bahamas (2002) states, “Breast milk is the best choice for infants to start a healthy life.”

Breastmilk not only delivers a ton of nutrition benefits but it is also offers a multiplicity of economical, psychological and ecological benefits. While other formulas of milk are created, none comes close to the one designed by the Creator. We, therefore undoubtedly espouse, strongly recommend and promote breastfeeding. Breastmilk is still thee best milk/food for babies. Human milk is for human babies. So, we encourage you to follow the Divine formula of breastfeeding, giving your babies thee absolutely best food created just for them.

WORKERS continue demolition of the First Baptist Church where a gunman killed more than two dozen worshipers in 2017, in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Monday, Aug. 12, 2024.

Site of deadliest church shooting in US history is torn down over protests by some Texas families

CREWS on Monday tore down a Texas church where a gunman killed more than two dozen worshippers in 2017, using heavy machinery to raze the small building even after some families sought to preserve the scene of the deadliest church shooting in U.S. history.

A judge cleared the way last month for the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs to tear down the sanctuary where the attack took place, which until now had been kept as a memorial. Church members voted in 2021 to tear it down, but some families in the community of less than 1,000 people filed a lawsuit hoping for a new vote on the building's fate.

Authorities put the number of dead in the Nov. 5, 2017, shooting at 26 people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. After the shooting, the interior of the sanctuary was painted white and chairs

with the names of those who were killed were placed there. A new church was completed for the congregation about a year and a half after the shooting.

John Riley, an 86-year-old member of the church, watched with sadness and disappointment as the long arm of a yellow excavator swung a heavy claw into the building over and over.

"The devil got his way," Riley said, "I would not be the man I am without that church."

He said he would pray for God to "punish the ones" who put the demolition in motion.

"That was God's house, not their house," Riley said.

For many in the community, the sanctuary was a place of solace.

Terrie Smith, president of the Sutherland Springs Community Association, visited often over the years, calling it a place where "you feel the comfort of everybody that was lost there." Among those killed in the shooting were a woman who was like a daughter to Smith

— Joann Ward — and Ward's two daughters, ages 7 and 5.

Smith watched Monday as the memorial sanctuary was torn down.

"I am sad, angry, hurt," she said.

In early July, a Texas judge granted a temporary restraining order sought by some families. But another judge later denied a request to extend that order, setting in motion the demolition.

In court filings, attorneys for the church called the structure a "constant and very painful reminder."

Attorneys for the church argued that it was within its rights to demolish the memorial while the attorney for the families who filed the lawsuit said they were just hoping to get a new vote.

"It's a very somber day for us," said Amber Holder, a church member who was a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

She said she wasn't at the service on the day of the shooting but arrived soon after. As a teen, she was taken in by the family of

the pastor, whose 14-year-old daughter, Annabelle Pomeroy, was among those killed.

Holder said the church had become a piece of history and that the scars on the building from that day, including bullet holes, were a powerful reminder of what happened.

"Tearing it down, no good comes from that," Holder said.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs alleged that some church members were wrongfully removed from the church roster before the vote was taken. In a court filing, the church denied the allegations in the lawsuit.

A woman who answered the phone at the church said Monday that she had no comment then hung up.

The man who opened fire in the church, Devin Patrick Kelley, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was chased by bystanders and crashed his car. Investigators have said the shooting appeared to stem from a domestic dispute involving Kelley and his motherin-law, who sometimes attended

services at the church but was not present on the day of the shooting.

Communities across the U.S. have grappled with what should happen to the sites of mass shootings. Last month, demolition began on the threestory building where 17 people died in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. After the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, it was torn down and replaced.

Tops Friendly Markets in Buffalo, New York, and the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where racist mass shootings happened, both reopened. In Colorado, Columbine High School still stands, though its library, where most of the victims were killed, was replaced.

In Texas, officials closed Robb Elementary in Uvalde after the 2022 shooting there and plan to demolish the school.

Shining a light on Proverbs 3-13-18

WHAT can be more valuable profitable than silver or gold?

According to The book of Proverbs in the Holy Bible, wisdom is more profitable than precious stones could ever be.

Proverbs 3:13-14: “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.”

Many people will jump at the opportunity to gain gold, silver or in modern day terms cryptocurrency, bit coin to name a few when stacked against a choice of wisdom. However, for Christian faithful whose final authority is the word of God, they may have a different way of thinking and approach.

For Christians, they are encouraged to get wisdom and understanding - two intangibles that hold great value in their Christian journey.

Wisdom is not only considered having knowledge, but the ability to use knowledge and apply it to life circumstances. And according to the bible the source of wisdom is God.

Tribune Religion spoke to several Christians regarding the application of this proverb to their daily lives and what it means to them.

Donald Major said since becoming a Christian four years ago he has been adamant about gaining knowledge and wisdom about how he can live life practically. He said what he has been learning is that he should place greater value on God and his wisdom over everything especially money.

“The gold and silver that this scripture refers to

represents currency really. In today’s society, we use money as our currency today. But back in those days, silver and gold was the currency of the day.

“Also one of the things that tempt people to disregard God and his word a lot of the time have to do with money. Money can drive you to do certain things and make certain decisions that goes directly against the plan and will of God.”

Donald said he has before been at a crossroads when it came to a decision he had to make about his career.

“I work in the financial field and got an offer that was so good… thousands more than what I was currently making. It was a pay increase, a promotion and an offer that just about anyone would not be able to refuse. However I felt a check in my spirit… an unction and a lack of peace. While I wanted to say yes because the opportunity was so lucrative, I had to pause.

God said that he would lead us from the inside

and I just did not have peace about the offer.

“Some people may said well it was unwise to turn down the offer that could have really put me in different financial bracket but truthfully I made the wise choice by not going against what I felt on the inside. Months later after the company that made the lucrative offer shut down, I vowed to never go against wisdom which is seeking God first, taking inventory of what I am feeling on the inside,” he said.

Tamara Poitier told Tribune Religion that this Scripture is her favourite especially because it addresses the relationship

Christians should have with money.

“We are to never exalt money, or riches of God and his word. His word is wisdom. His word bring light and understanding. If we value his word and wisdom above all things, he will show us how to get wealth the right way.

Knowing facts about God and the Bible is not all there is to wisdom. Wisdom is a gift from God. James 1:5 states, ‘If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.’ God blesses us with wisdom in order for us to glorify Him and use the

knowledge we have of Him.

“Wisdom isn’t about what you know. It’s about how you see. Wisdom happens when you take knowledge and apply it to your life in a such a way that adds meaning and promotes the common good.

Dhalia Munroe said the scripture highlights the value of wisdom so much because wisdoms sees things from all perspectives.

“When you make wise decisions, you keep your immediate needs in mind, along with holding longterm perspectives. This is key to making choices that bring you joy. In addition,

wisdom allows you to make better contributions to your community by balancing your needs and boundaries with those of others.”

Travis Butler said: “If you want what’s best for your soul, it starts with making wise decisions. You have to value wisdom over everything else. Far too many people find themselves in debilitating situations simply because they have not chosen the wise route instead the chose the route the seem right in the short term but in the long term did not have the best outcome.”
