Hundreds march in Brazil to support religious freedom

PRACTITIONERS of different religious traditions marched down Rio de Janeiro's iconic Copacabana Beach on Sunday to support religious freedom in Brazil, where cases of intolerance have doubled over the past six years.

Hundreds of men, women and children from more than a dozen faiths participated in the event, known as the March for the Defense of Religious Freedom. Many of the participants were practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions that have recently faced attacks from members of Christian groups. Brazil's recently appointed Minister for Human Rights Macaé Evaristo also joined the march, which was held for the 17th consecutive year.

"The great challenge today in our country is to reduce inequality," Evaristo told the state-run Agencia Brasil news agency. "So for me it is very important to be present in this march, because the people here are also struggling for many things like decent work and a life free from hunger."

In Rio de Janeiro state, which is home to a quarter of the practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions, there's been a proliferation of evangelical Christianity,

particularly neo-Pentecostal churches founded since 1970 that focus on spreading their faith among non-believers.

Experts say that while most neo-Pentecostal proselytizing is peaceful, the spread of the faith has been accompanied by a surge of intolerance for traditional African-influenced religions, ranging from verbal abuse and discrimination to destruction of temples and forced expulsion from neighbourhoods.

"Everything that comes from Black people, everything that comes from people of African origin is devalued; if we are not firm in our faith, we will lose strength," said Vania Vieira, a practitioner of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé. "This walk is to show that we are standing, that we will survive."

While the Brazilian constitution protects the free exercise of religion, cases of disrespect and attacks, especially against groups of African origin, have become increasingly frequent.

Between 2018 and 2023, the Brazilian government's complaint service recorded an increase of 140 percent in the number of complaints of religious intolerance in the country.

In Brazil, those who commit crimes of religious intolerance can face up to five years in prison, as well as a fine.

FAITHFUL from various religions participate in the Defense of Religious Freedom march at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024. The march seeks to bring attention to religious intolerance in the country.

What does it mean to go back to school in The Bahamas?

As the sun sets on the vibrant summer months in The Bahamas, students across the islands gear up to return to school. This transition is more than just a shift from beach days to classroom routines; it embodies a significant opportunity for reflection, growth, and renewal. Let’s delve into what going back to school should means for Bahamian students and how it should shape their academic and personal journeys.

Reflecting on the previous year

The return to school often inspires students to reflect on their past academic year. In a nation rich in culture and community, many students think back to their experiences—both triumphs and challenges. Did they excel in their studies, participate in local festivals, or engage in community service? Reflecting on these experiences is vital, as it helps students acknowledge their achievements while also recognising areas for improvement, whether in mastering a subject or developing social skills.

Recognising shortcomings

For many students, acknowledging shortcomings can be a tough but essential step in their growth journey. Whether it’s realizing that they struggled with specific subjects or found it challenging to balance schoolwork with family and community commitments, this recognition lays the groundwork for change. Understanding where they fell short enables students to create a focused approach for the new academic year, fostering a mindset geared toward improvement.

Establishing new goals

With insights gained from reflection, students can now set new goals for the upcoming school year. These objectives may be academic—like aiming for higher grades in math or science—or personal, such as developing better study habits or engaging more actively in school clubs. Setting realistic and achievable goals

empowers Bahamian students, providing them with a sense of direction and purpose as they navigate their educational paths.

Renewed vision

As students return to school, they often embrace a renewed vision for their learning journey. Influenced by summer experiences, such as internships, volunteer work, or family trips to other islands, students may return with fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. This renewed vision serves as a motivational force, encouraging them to explore new subjects, engage with local culture, and expand their knowledge beyond the classroom.

Elevation of self

Ultimately, going back to school in The Bahamas is not just about academics; it’s also about personal elevation. The school environment offers a unique platform for students to develop skills, build confidence, and foster friendships. As they navigate new challenges and experiences, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their potential. This journey of self-discovery is crucial, cultivating resilience and a sense of identity rooted in Bahamian culture.

Conclusion

The transition back to school after the summer break is filled with opportunities for reflection, growth, and transformation in The Bahamas. As students assess their past experiences, recognise their shortcomings, establish new goals, and embrace a renewed vision, they embark on a path of personal and academic elevation. This journey is not merely about returning to the classroom; it’s about stepping into a new chapter filled with potential and promise. As the school year unfolds, Bahamian students are encouraged to embrace this time of change, knowing that each day presents a chance to learn, grow, and redefine what it means to be a student in their vibrant community.

Grandparents’ day at St Andrew’s

ST ANDREW'S Anglican School in Exuma recently celebrated Grandparents' day during their weekly Mass. Many grandparents took time out of their schedule to spend a little time with their grandkids at school.

Rev Chitan Darling, rector of St Andrew's Anglican Parish, said: "In researching grandparents day, I found that the theme for this year is Grand Minds: Learn, Love, Legacy, highlighting the role of learning across generations and celebrating the way in which grandparents and older adults inspire, mentor, and shape the future of younger generations."

She referenced Isaiah chapter 40 saying God gives strength to the powerless and that he is the source of everything on this journey of life and faith. God is the Creator of life who allows parents to see their children and grandparents to see their grandchildren and that is a blessing within itself.

Regardless of our age, Darling said, there is always something to learn and something to teach.

She reminded grandparents of their important place in their grandchildren's lives.

Rev Darling is assisted by Deacon Tristan Lockhart, assistant curate, as well

as Chaplain and Dean of Students for St Andrew's Anglican School. Catechist Patrick Symonette, a grandparent moderated the service.

The new principal, Tamara Moncur, is excited for the new school year. This year's theme is Excellence In Action Through Partnership : A Shared Vision & Unity. The Anglican Central Education Authority's mission is to produce competent individuals who can compete successfully in all aspects of education and promote a zeal for excellence in them.

Principal Moncur said this year they will be hosting a Basketball Invitational on November 22-24. There will also be a Christmas Bug stage production, Junior Junkanoo in Nassau, and a stage play entitled The Sins of Ella written by Tamara Moncur.

The school continues to offer free development classes for SAAS students, enrichment classes (tutoring), the Operation Redemption programme (for failing students), BJC classes and BGCSE classes as well.

Clubs include Audio & Visual, Art, Keyclub, GGYA, Eco Club, Brownies / Sunflower, Dance, Choir, Band, Basketball, Computer Classes for Senior Citizens, Junior Local Government, Girl Guides, Rangers, Junkanoo, Coding Drama and Speech.

Bahamian Christian author receives prestigious award

As if becoming an Amazon bestselling author wasn’t a major feat accomplished, now Bahamian Christian author Health Henderson Fowler has become the recipient of a prestigious award for his Christian fiction novel, Married to the Devil.

Health Henderson Fowler, or HH Fowler to his readers, has been awarded the gold medal for the novel at the Readers’ Favourite International Book Awards. Fowler has written over 35 novels, including the popular Church Boyz and Church Gurlz series. Describing himself as an ardent reader, Fowler’s literary journey began at age 13, fuelled by a passion for reading and writing.

The Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards is a competition that draws thousands of entries from authors around the globe. The annual ceremony held in Miami attracts nearly 300 attendees along with their guests. Guest speakers include authors, industry professionals, and literary enthusiasts who gather to participate in the event. Readers’ Favorite is known for its rigorous standards and is endorsed by major publishers such as Random House, Simon & Schuster, and HarperCollins. Reflecting on his award, Fowler said: “Receiving an award for my book is a profound culmination of joy, gratitude, and a deep sense of accomplishment. It represents the years of hard work, financial investment, and personal sacrifice I dedicated to elevating my craft to an international standard.”

The novel centres on First Lady Erica Winthrop, who wants to escape her abusive marriage but is relentlessly sabotaged by her manipulative husband, Apostle Magnus Winthrop. Magnus is convinced that Erica's desire to leave is driven by her forbidden attraction to 22-year-old Dean Ripley, a man 20 years her junior. Magnus is determined to prevent any scandal that could ruin his carefully constructed world of fame and power, even if it means going to extreme lengths. Set in the small island community of Barracuda Cove, the novel explores the high stakes of fame, power, and personal freedom.
