Hurricane Matthew rips through 9-hole golf course By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

aving started the project about six years ago with more than $4 million invested into it, businessman Craig Flowers said the damage from the passing of Hurricane Matthew will not deter him from completing the Bahamas Golf Federation’s nine-hole golf course. But the former BGF president, who has personally made the commitment to the project, said while the course at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex was almost completed, the storm will set the project back. “The majority of the damage was done by the wind. We didn’t have that much rain,” said Flowers as he made an inspection yesterday following two days of clean up by a hired crew of workers. “We conditioned the area for flooding and not anything else. The high intensity wind that we experi-

Most of the trees are somewhat above the level that we are walking and that is because when we graded the land here, it was for the purpose of maintaining the trees.” However, Flowers said in their advanced planning, they constructed walls as barriers around the trees,

which helped to secure the trees that remained standing after the passing of the category 4 storm on Thursday. “Unfortunately, due to funding and a lot of other things, we weren’t able to get to some of the trees at the back end of the property,” he said. “We intended to put them up, but we just

never got there. So along the border of the property, we had a lot of trees that were damaged. “A lot of trees were toppled over and a lot of them have been uprooted from the bottom because of the grading of the property. We really wanted to maintain the trees because of the environment so the birds and

the wild life that inhabit this property can survive.” Flowers, the owner of FML Group of Companies, said to be able to replace the trees, some of them which are at least 25 years old, maybe impossible but he will continue to improve the vegetation and beautify the place. “Some of the trees that were there were placed there to protect the holes when other players were playing on opposite holes,” he said. “So we are going to have to put some type of vegetation back to prevent ball flight from one hole to another. “That is going to be my major concern at this present place and time.” Six years ago, when Flowers and Agatha Delancy conceived the idea of developing a driving range at the site, they approached the then Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Neville Wisdom, who provided the land for them to begin the work. Wisdom was present for the ground breaking before he left office.

“I had no idea when I first started that I was going to be investing the type of funds in which I had done so far,” Flowers said. “I only came with the purpose of starting the driving range, but as time went on, the adjoining properties were made available to us and I took on the task of investing some four and-a-half to five million at this site. “One has to consider that before the property could be used to design the golf course, it had to be cleaned up. In using the old dump site, how much of the old material that was here has decomposed itself where there will be no environmental hazard for utilisation of this property. That took us some time because we were able to test the water contents and do a study of what type of wild life that could live in this environment.” With the golf course almost 90 per cent completed before the storm passed, Flowers said they have been

ROCKETS PABLO PRIGIONI, right, passes the ball as New Orleans Pelicans Buddy Hield, of the Bahamas, attempts to block during their preseason NBA game in Shanghai, China, on Sunday. (AP Photo) By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net SPORTING a new look as his New Orleans Pelicans travelled to China, Buddy Hield has displayed his trademark sharpshooting skill in exhibition play that the organisation expects him to bring in the regular season. Through three preseason games thus far, Hield has averaged 17 points, 2.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 40 per cent from three, 53 per cent from the field. With his trademark mohawk gone in favour of a more conven-

tional haircut, Hield’s focus was away from the court as he spoke about the Bahamas’ resilience facing storms as Hurricane Matthew approached. “It’s a scary time, when you have a hurricane coming to the Bahamas. People work hard down there. I’ve been through a lot of bad storms that tore up the whole island, and you have to rebuild from scratch. I just pray to God and pray for the Bahamas that Matthew doesn’t do too much damage down there,” he said when asked about Matthew’s possible impact on the Bahamas, “I used to talk to my mom, and back then you liked when there

was a storm, because there was no school, being a kid. But now as you get older and you experience hurricanes, it’s not a good time, because it hurts people financially, causes deaths, flooding, the winds tear houses apart. There are poles crashing on houses. There are so many things that can go wrong during a hurricane. You always hope that it doesn’t affect people badly. I pray God keeps blessing the Bahamas and protects the Bahamas.” The Pelicans complete their tour of China as a part of the NBA’s Global Games with their second matchup against the Houston Rockets tomorrow at 6:30am

local time. Hield made his preseason debut and finished with 19 points in the Pelicans’ 116-102 win over the Dallas Mavericks at the CenturyLink Center in Bossier City, Louisiana. He also added six rebounds, three assists and shot 8-12 from the field, including 3-6 from beyond three-point range. In game two, Hield scored a team high 18 points, shot 50 per cent from the field and 40 per cent from three-point range in a 11396 loss to the Indiana Pacers at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans Louisiana.

AFTER the passing of Hurricane Matthew, it was obvious that there was a lot of structural damage to properties throughout New Providence. On inspection of the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre, the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium and the Kendal GL Isaacs Gymnasium, which were both used as a hurricane shelter, as well as the National Tennis Centre and the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim Complex, there was minimal damage. However, at the old Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium and further down the road at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, there was quite a considerable amount of damage. Lawrence Hepburn, the maintenance manager for the National Sports Authority, said while the properties at the QESC are all just about intact, the old TAR Stadium and the softball stadiums at Baillou Hills were hit the hardest. “At the fields where the Bahamas Government League plays, there was considerable damage to the concession stand and all of the dugouts,” Hepburn said. “At the Banker’s Field, there was some damage but not as much as there was at the other softball field. I think they can get that up and running quicker than the other one.” The New Providence Softball Association currently occupies the Banker’s Field as they got the first

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: BAHAMIAN PLAYERS MAKING EARLY SEASON IMPACT IN CANADA By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net PRESEASON basketball has tipped off in Canadian colleges and several Bahamian players are making an early season impact as their teams look to contend the 2016-17 season. Leading the charge will be Jackson Jacob and his Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks as they look to repeat as Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men’s national champions. Jackson Jacob was named the MVP of last year’s tournament when he finished with 13 points in the finale and averaged 20 points per game throughout the tournament. He is one of three Bahamians on the Ooks roster alongside Samson Cleare and current redshirt Darrio Dean.

The 6’1” Jacob leads an undersized Ooks lineup that head coach Mike Connolly expects to contend once again. “Jackson is the hardest-working player on our team, no doubt. Sometimes he’s in the gym working on his shot at 6:30 in the morning, and he keeps his schoolwork in order.” Connolly said. “[Our size]. It helped us to go small (and quick) because we were better defensively at the start of many games. When we needed to use our height, it was also valuable, but going small, a lot of the time, was right for us.” Cleare will remain sidelined for the semester in order to qualify academically and will not be eligible until January. “We will need to survive the first term and we’ll ask some players to fill a position that is not familiar to them. If we can stay in the playoff hunt in the first term,

we’ll be in a position to make a run in the second half and, hopefully, play our best basketball in March when the ACAC championship tournament comes along,” Connolly said. “Our goal is simple: play defence, play together, play resilient basketball. If we do that, we will have an opportunity to make a run at an ACAC championship.” Jacob has averaged 33 points per game in the preseason thus far as the Ooks have split their first two exhibition matchups. He scored 34 in 82-67 loss to UNBC Timberwolves and finished with 31 in 75-68 win over the Briercrest Clippers. Also in other league’s, Trevone Grant made his official debut with the Acadia Axemen basketball in the programme’s inaugural preseason tournament. Grant averaged 12.7 points, two steals and two assists per game

over the course of the Axemen’s “Stu Aberdeen Challenge” which concluded yesterday in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Third year head coach Kevin Duffie, who said he is excited about the upcoming season and feels the team has all the necessary ingredients to be successful, leads the Axemen. Duffie considers Grant one of the new additions to the Axemen roster that will have an immediate impact. “He’s a veteran guy that’s going to come in and play some major minutes for us,” he said. “He will produce at both ends of the floor. He’s a really good player.” At the time of his signing, Duffie foreshadowed what Grant brings to the programme. “We are excited about the addition of Trevone to our roster. We believe he will impact our team immediately and has the physical-

ity to defend guards in our league and he has the offensive skill set to add a scoring punch to our group,” he said. “He is a quality individual that will bring experience and leadership to our locker room.” One of the most dynamic players in Bahamian high school basketball last season, Azaro Roker continues to adjust to collegiate ranks in Canada. Roker was afforded an opportunity to take his game to the next level and play collegiately for the St Francis Xavier University XMen this season. Roker, who has played sparingly thus far through three exhibition games, is expected to be a welcomed addition for the X-Men, who finished with a 5-15 win/loss record last season. The regular season for all three players begins the first weekend in November.

Beard’s jumper lifts Sparks over Lynx in Game 1 By JON KRAWCZYNSKI AP Basketball Writer MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — In a championship series filled with stars, Alana Beard sometimes can get lost with so much attention on Minnesota’s four Olympians and the two MVPs in Los Angeles. That’s exactly what happened in the closing moments of Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, and Beard hit a jumper from the baseline just before time expired to lift the Sparks to a 78-76 victory over the defending champion Lynx. With the defense collapsing on Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike in the paint, Beard found herself all alone in the corner. She took the pass from Chelsea Gray and knocked down jumper with Maya Moore’s in her face. As the ball splashed through, Moore put her head in her hands, and the Sparks celebrated a thrilling victory, their second on Minnesota’s court this season. “You may not recognize the importance of her statistically for us a lot of times,” Sparks coach Brian Agler said. “But her presence, her leadership, obviously how disruptive she can be defensively, and then for her to hit a shot like that, it was

incredible.” Kristi Toliver scored 19 points to lead Los Angeles and Parker had 14 points and nine rebounds in her finals debut. League MVP Ogwumike added 19 points for the Sparks in the opener of the best-of-five series. Sylvia Fowles had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Lindsay Whalen scored 18 points for top-seeded Minnesota. Moore scored all 18 of her points in the second half to move into first place on the WNBA’s career finals scoring list, but the Lynx committed 16 turnovers and got caught scrambling on the final possession of the game. “I think we were more worried about not letting anyone get to the hole,” Fowles said. “I’m not sure exactly what happened on that last play to make her get wide open. But we learned from this.” There was a time not too long ago when Beard’s name belonged on the marquee with players Parker and Ogwumike or Lynx stars Moore, Sylvia Fowles, Seimone Augustus and Lindsay Whalen. She was the national player of the year at Duke, the No. 2 overall pick by the Washington Mystics in 2004 and a four-time All-Star before injuries set her back. She re-emerged in Los

By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer PRESEASON statistics often can be misleading. That might not be the case with James Harden right now. After three preseason games, Harden has three points-assists double-doubles — the most recent one Sunday in Shanghai, when he had 26 points and 15 assists to help the Houston Rockets beat the New Orleans Pelicans 123-117 in an NBA Global Games matchup. “We’re treating every game of preseason like the regular season in order to build good habits,” Harden said. “We don’t take the preseason lightly” Clearly not. The Rockets are 3-0 in exhibitions so far this fall, scoring 131, 130 and now 123 points in those games. Harden is averaging 23.3 points and 12 assists in those three games. And fans in China, where the Rockets are enormously popular anyway — thanks in large part to Yao Ming — have taken to Harden as well, with many sporting fake beards on Sunday to mimic his look. “Great atmosphere,” Harden said. They’ll be seeing even more NBA in China this season. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Sunday an expansion of the NBA’s partnership with BesTV, one that will see up to 1,300 games per season broadcast in China. “It’s a multimedia partnership that brings the very best in television and technology to the NBA in China,” Silver said.

Over in China, Hield finished with 14 points, two rebounds and three assists in a 123-117 loss at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. Hield updated fans on his experience in China through a series called “Pelicans Postcards” published on the team’s website. “We’ve now been here for a few days, and it’s been amazing to visit China for the first time, seeing all the love the people here have and passion for basketball. We’d heard about it before, but now you get to see it for yourself up close and connect with the fans. The fans here obviously don’t get to see you every day, because it’s a long ways from America. It’s great for us to

able to reach the league’s biggest stage. She hit 5 of 12 shots and had three assists. “At first obviously there’s some nerves, but you kind of get lost in the game and just trying to execute,” Parker said. “We had to take it possession by possession because you never know what’s going to happen.” MOORE’S MARK: The Minnesota star was 0 for 4 in the first half, but made 7 of 10 shots in the final two quarters to move past Diana Taurasi for first place on the WNBA’s career scoring list for the finals. She set the mark with 5:20 to play after hitting a jump shot and converting the three-point play. Before she hit the game-winner, Beard also had a spectacular block of a shot by Whalen and then a steal off an inbounds to set up Ogwumike’s bucket for a 76-72 lead. Moore scored on a coastto-coast layup to tie the score at 76 with 24.7 seconds to play, but she helped aggressively on Gray’s drive on the other end, leaving

Beard open for just her second bucket of the game. “I don’t think I’ve ever hit a game-winner,” Beard said quietly. “So it’s pretty cool. Pretty cool.” NEW LOOK: In years past these two teams never could have met in the finals because both are in the Western Conference. But the league changed its playoff format this year and seeded all of the teams

based on record, not geography. The result in the first year could not have been better for the league with the top two teams throughout the season meeting. “I don’t think it’s a fluke that we’re here now in the finals,” Fowles said. “I’m loving this new format.” PARKER’S DEBUT: Parker has been one of the league’s brightest stars for years, but has never been

TOP 20: The WNBA hosted more than a dozen members of the top 20 players in league history for a halftime ceremony. Each player was presented with a ring to commemorate it. Whalen, Moore, Parker and Augustus all participated in the ceremony, and the league extended the length of halftime to allow them to receive their rings and then get back to the locker room to meet with coaches and teammates. UP NEXT: Game 2 is today in Minneapolis.

be able to give back in this way to the game of basketball.” Hield, one of five international players on the New Orleans roster, joined former Pelican and Bahamian descendant Eric Gordon to host an event at the first ever NBA Play Zone in Shanghai. “It was unbelievable to be around the kids – the majority of them were under 10 years old – because you see how much they keep up with basketball, and to realise that they even recognise us at such a young age. It shows how connected they are with the players in America. We are role models, so we’re trying to do whatever we can to inspire them. It’s great to see that the game is growing so much,” he said. “When I was growing up, I remember seeing famous athletes come and spend

time with us in the Bahamas. Now it’s my turn to do the same, because kids look up to us. They were excited just to be in our presence, and it made it so much fun to spend some time with them. When we were at the NBA Play Zone, I saw local kids who were only five or six that had incredible ball handling skills, especially for someone that young. That’s great, because it shows the intense level of training they get here. Kids want it.” As usual, he also took the opportunity to continue his role as an ambassador for the Bahamas. “I’ve also been meeting many, many fans in Shanghai. They’ve been so friendly and so supportive. Outside our hotel, there are always people waiting for autographs or to take pictures, so I’ve

stopped by and said hello as much as possible on my way to practices and events. I’ve even gotten some of them to shout out the Bahamas in videos I’ve taken with my phone… 242 to the world!” Following his debut, Hield said his goal was to be more patient in his adjustment to the NBA level. “Yeah, don’t rush it,” Hield said of his performance. “Let it come to you. The ball will find you. Coach always says the ball will find you if you’re [in] the right spots. Once you give the ball up, it comes right back to you, and you’re [not] taking a contested shot to a wide open shot. So that’s cool. ... I’m just learning as I go.” ‘’Whatever coach needs me to do, I’ll have to come with intensity,’’ Hield said. ‘’I just need to be efficient and let the game come to

me.’’ Hield has improved on his Summer League performance in Las Vegas. He averaged 16.8 points, 5.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds through five games but struggled shooting at just 34 per cent from the field and 24 per cent from three-point range. “I think he had his moments,” Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry said. “Obviously, he shot the ball well and made some plays. I just think it’s typical. He’s a rookie. He’s going to have games like this, and he’ll struggle in some games. The thing I liked best about it is that he always gives maximum effort. And as long as he gives maximum effort, I think there will be some chance for him to have some success.”

““THE CREATIVITY AND INGENUITY DISPLAYED BY MY BAHAMIAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS POST HURRICANE MATTHEW IN LINE CUTTING AND BACK DOOR HOOK UPS MUST BE APPLAUDED. IF ‘LINE CUTTING’ AND ‘BACK DOOR TOTING’ WERE OLYMPIC EVENTS, WE WOULD BE UNBEATABLE AS A NATION WITH MEDALS GALORE.”” THANK God since the last time we caught up, we all made it through the ravages of Hurricane Matthew, safe and sound. Matthew seems to have left some comedy in its wake, in the form of gas lines, ice lines and especially lines at KFC! The creativity and ingenuity displayed by my Bahamian brothers and sisters in line cutting and back door hook ups must be applauded. I’m convinced if ‘line cutting’ and ‘back door toting’ were Olympic events, we would be unbeatable as a nation with medals galore. Luckily I’ve gotten power back and I got the legit hook up at KFC, so I watch the antics and behaviour of my Bahamian people on the aforementioned lines, like sporting events and reality television. I must admit it’s quit entertaining and amusing. Here’s some other observations during the hurricane break. 1. Ezekiel Elliott is the real deal, and he’s living up to all the pre-Draft hype Here’s where I get to say “I told you so.” Because I did, right here in an earlier SMM column.

I wonder how all of the experts and Cowboys fans that wanted the Cowboys to take the likes of Joey Bosa, Jalen Ramsey or Myles Jack with the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft feel right about now? Would those players, had they been selected instead of Elliott, have had the same impact on the Cowboys, and would they be in their present position of first place in the NFC East at 4-1? Ahh ... No! Elliott leads the league in rushing, 545 yards, he’s averaging over five yards per carry, with five touchdowns, including a beautiful 60yard touchdown scamper on Sunday against the Bengals. Elliott reminds me of two former Cowboy great running backs and NFL Hall of Fame members. ‘Zeke’ posses the power and drive of Emmitt Smith, with the elusiveness and world class breakaway speed of Tony Dorsett. Barring injury and any unforeseen off-field issues, ‘Zeke’ has the potential to challenge Smith’s NFL career rushing record. All of that remains to be seen, but right here in the

PITTSBURGH Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and actor/comedian Will Ferrell ... separated at birth? ‘now’ Elliott is the best back in the league (Todd Gurley, David Johnson are in that conversation also) and he’s only going to get better. 2. I actually missed Tom Brady Yes, I can’t believe I just typed that! Well, it’s more like I missed hating on him, but nonetheless, Brady’s back and the hateful rants and conspiracy theories on my end will return in abundance. Sadly the window is now closing for Tom, we’ve only got so many more goes at this before he retires into obscurity with his supermodel wife Gisele. Poor fellow! Leaving me to find a new source of hate (potential new candidate Carson Wentz, QB Eagles). The touchdowns seem to be returning to New England in abundance also, just look at the 33-13 score from Sunday’s Patriots game against the Browns. Enough said, anemic offence cured. Fantasy foot-

ball landscape changed and annoying ‘Bradyites’ confessing their man crushes and undying love for ‘Tom Terrific’ all over social media ad nauseam. Ah, the NFL just how I like it, and seeing how my Cowboys are an impressive 4-1, winners of four straight games, so bring on the comparisons, verbal jousts and sports arguments. Just remember get your facts right: my Cowboys are winning, their future is very bright, and I drink Jack Daniels and Coke (you have to pay for your schooling somehow.) 3. The Miami Dolphins suck No seriously, the Dolphins really suck. Rookie Head Coach Adam Gase (ga-ze) should change his name to ‘Haze’ or ‘Daze’ because he’s been lost and confused all season long, and his team has been overwhelmed all season long. At 1-4 and seemingly out of it already, the Dolphins need to focus on developing

young talent on the roster and playing for the first pick in this years NFL Draft. Oh and throw wide receiver Jarvis Landry all the balls, I have him in Fantasy Football this season on two of my teams, I need points out of him weekly, period. I could care less if the Dolphins win or lose. 4. Anybody else ever notice Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger and actor/ comedian Will Ferrell are identical twins separated at birth? That observation brought to you by Jack Daniels. 5. The Los Angeles Lakers have kicked off their NBA pre-season schedule After three games the Lakers are 2-1 and playing hard for rookie Head Coach Luke Walton. The young Lakers will have their share of growing pains but as a diehard Laker fan, I must admit watching PG DeAngelo Russell, SG Jordan Clarkson, F Brandon Ingram and PF Julius Randall continue to grow and develop together,

along with Walton calling the shots from the sideline, is going to be fun for years to come. Until next week, continue to be safe during the hurricane recovery, leave some KFC for the rest of us, and remember there is NO GAS SHORTAGE so stop blocking up the roads. Finally and most importantly, put some ‘respect’ on it when one refers to my Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are 4-1 and winners of four straight games: words like crappy, dead, lousy, sorry, worthless no longer apply to the Dallas Cowboys. They can now be applied to a certain NFL franchise in south Florida with the big ‘fishy’ mascot exclusively. • Naughty presents ‘Mischief and Mayhem in da AM’ from 6am to 10am, Monday to Friday and ‘The Press Box’ sports talk show on Sunday from 10am to 1pm, on KISS FM 96.1. Delancy, a former president - the first female - of the BGF, who served as Mr Flowers sat in office as her vice president, is now in charge of the overall growth and development of the property and getting it ready for its official opening. “I’m very hesitant that the golf course is in a position to play on, but it’s not in a position where it can be maintained without the necessary maintenance and support system,” Flowers said. “I would like to see those things in place with the locker room, a computer room and a proper clubhouse before any task is finally done.” Of course, the storm has put a dent into the plans, but Flowers said he’s committed to ensuring that the entire property is completed.

the thrower’s area that we were developing behind Shell Gas Station. “At the new stadium, the only real damage that we experienced was on the infield. We are going to be set back in putting down the new surface. But we are looking to regroup and get everything back in order.”

With a deadline set for December to have all of the renovations completed at the QESC, Hepburn said they are going to have to go through another renovation process and they hope to accelerate a lot of things by increasing their skilled labour to get the job done. Donaldson dashes home, Blue Jays beat Rangers to win ALDS By IAN HARRISON Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Josh Donaldson’s mad dash moved the Blue Jays into the next round of the playoffs. Donaldson raced home from second base after Rougned Odor bounced a double-play relay in the 10th inning and Toronto beat the Texas Rangers 7-6 on Sunday night to sweep their AL Division Series. Donaldson, the reigning AL MVP, led off the 10th with a double into the right-centre field gap and Matt Bush intentionally walked Edwin Encarnacion. After Jose Bautista struck out, Russell Martin hit a grounder to shortstop Elvis Andrus, who tried to start a double play with a feed to second base. After making the turn, second baseman Odor shorthopped his throw to first baseman Mitch Moreland and the ball skipped away, allowing Donaldson to sprint home and beat Moreland’s throw with a dive

Championship Series after beating Texas in an ALDS for a second straight year and will face the winner of the Cleveland-Boston series. The Indians lead 2-0. Game 3 was scheduled for yesterday following a postponement Sunday. Blue Jays president

Mark Shapiro, who spent 24 years with Cleveland before joining Toronto last fall, said he’d already reached out to one former Indians colleague about a potential ALCS meeting. “It’s something I’ve tried not to think about,” Shapiro said, “but I texted (In-

dians GM) Chris Antonetti a two-word text about 10 minutes ago: Your turn.” Toronto’s bench emptied and swarmed around Donaldson near home plate after his dramatic dash, while Bush kneeled in the infield and watched the celebration. The umpires huddled to review the play at second base, but after a brief delay, the crowd of 49,555 went wild as crew chief Joe West signalled the run counted. “You’re like ‘Oh gosh, let’s not have a technicality ruin this moment for us right here,’” Martin said. “It was a little bit of a buzzkill at the time.” Donaldson had two doubles among his three hits and is batting .538 through four postseason games, all wins for the Blue Jays, who had to beat Baltimore in a wild-card game to get to the ALDS. “We definitely feel good about where we’re at,” Donaldson said. “We’re pitching well, we’re playing good defence and right now we’ve been able to hit the homer. That’s a big positive for our offence.”

Record 7-second goal, 6-0 routs in European WCup qualifying By GRAHAM DUNBAR AP Sports Writer GENEVA (AP) — The fastest goal in World Cup history capped a night of 6-0 routs and the Netherlands’ further fall in European qualifying yesterday. Seven seconds ticked by when Belgium forward Christian Benteke’s shot finished his surging run through the Gibraltar defence which kicked off but coughed up the ball. Benteke beat the 8.3 seconds that FIFA timed Davide Gaultieri taking to score for San Marino against England in 1993 and set the tone for the visiting Belgians’ 6-0 win. Portugal also won 6-0 but needed only a single, excellent goal from Cristiano Ronaldo to dominate the Faeroe Islands. Instead, 20-year-old Andre Silva stepped up with a first-half hattrick in just his fourth international match — perhaps finally pairing Ronaldo with a true penalty-area predator for the freshly crowned European champion. Dutch decline has been steep since it followed runner-up and third-place finishes at the last two World Cups with failure to qualify for an expanded Euro 2016. A 1-0 loss at home to France was the latest setback, sealed by Paul Pogba’s powerful shot from 30 metres (yards) in the first half. Belgium and France top their

groups, though Portugal trails Switzerland which won its third straight qualifier, 2-1 at lowly Andorra. Only the nine European group winners advance directly to play in Russia and four runners-up will qualify through a playoff round. • Here is what happened yesterday: GROUP A France lived up to its billing as favourite in the group thanks to Pogba’s goal and a late save by Hugo Lloris. Sweden continued to show it can play without retired superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic, going level with France on seven points by beating Bulgaria 3-0. The Dutch have four points and, despite drawing 1-1 in Sweden last month, are already playing catch up. While Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg looked like he could have kept out Pogba’s goal, his second-half saves kept his team in the game. “Maarten knows that he would usually save that (Pogba shot) with one hand in training,” Netherlands coach Danny Blind said. Injured Dutch stars Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben did not start and Quincy Promes limped off just 16 minutes in. France coach Didier Deschamps said Pogba was “decisive ... not just

because of his goal, but also by winning the ball in midfield and distributing well.” Also, Belarus took the lead in the 80th and Luxembourg equalised five minutes later in a 1-1 draw. GROUP B Portugal’s second 6-0 win inside four days was not enough to top the group but points to a bright future. Andre Silva, the Porto prospect, scored in the 12th, 22nd and 37th minutes before Ronaldo added a fourth midway through the second half in a comfortable visit to the North Atlantic. Goals from Joao Moutinho and Joao Cancelo in stoppage time completed the drubbing. Silva has replaced Eder, the Euro 2016 final scorer against France, and looks there to stay, now with four goals in four games to complement Ronaldo’s career tally of 66 for Portugal. Ronaldo’s goal Monday was a rising left-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area. Switzerland was less impressive in edging to a 2-1 win over Andorra which had not scored in World Cup qualifying since September 2009. It was worth waiting for, after Fabian Schaer’s 19th-minute penalty and Admir Mehmedi’s 77thminute header put the visitors in control. Then Alex Martinez fired in a

shot from distance in the 90th. Switzerland has nine points, three points clear of Portugal. Hungary is third, with four points, after winning 2-0 in Latvia. GROUP H Belgium needed only a World Cup-record seven seconds to prove the gap between No. 2 in the FIFA rankings and Gibraltar, which is dead last. Two lazy backward passes into the game, Benteke stole the ball, cut through the defence and made history. Benteke scored two more, one a wonderful backheel, to lead Belgium to match its biggest away victory. The other scorers were Mertens, Eden Hazard and Axel Witsel against a team playing its first World Cup qualifying campaign after gaining FIFA membership in May. Belgium has a perfect nine points atop the group. Greece is the main challenger after it won 2-0 at Estonia to stay perfect through three matches. Also, Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Cyprus 2-0. It was further evidence that the Red Devils, a dispirited team after an earlier-than-expected quarterfinal exit from Euro 2016, have found their groove under new coach Roberto Martinez. “It is a terrific moment for Belgian football,” Martinez said. “It showed the focus we had.”

62-YEAR-OLD JAY HAAS WINS PLAYOFF IN NEWPORT BEACH NEWPORT BEACH, California (AP) — Jay Haas got the opening he needed Sunday to become the second-oldest winner in PGA Tour Champions history. Haas — at 62 years, 10 months, 7 days — took advantage of Bart Bryant’s closing bogey to get into a playoff and won the Toshiba Classic with a birdie on the first extra hole. “It’s been a while since I’ve been in that position to win, and to pull it off today was awfully special,” Haas said. Haas trails only Mike Fetchick, the 1985 Hilton Head Seniors Invitational winner at 63 years to the day, on the age list. “Just to win, to know that I can do it again at 62 is pretty amazing,” said Haas, also the 2007 winner at Newport Beach Country Club. After opening with bogey-free rounds of 64 and 63 to take a five-stroke lead into the day, Haas found himself a stroke behind Bryant — two groups ahead playing the reachable 18th — and facing a 7-foot par putt on the par-3 17th. “I’m thinking I’m either going to be two or three behind,” Haas said. “When I made that one and then looked up and saw that we were tied, it really gave me a boost.” Haas parred the 18th — missing a 15-footer — for a 1-under 70 to match Bryant (64) at 16-under 197. “I’m disappointed right now,” Bryant said. “To bogey the 18th hole, a reachable par 5, is extremely disappointing. Then to not make a very good run in the playoff is just fairly inexcusable to hit the two shots that I hit.” Haas won his 18th title on the 50-and-over tour and first since 2014. He won nine times on the PGA Tour and captained the United States’ winning Presidents Cup team last year in South Korea. Playing two groups ahead of Haas, Bryant pulled even with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-4 16th and took the lead with a downhill, breaking 20-footer on the 17. Bryant birdied six of the first 12 holes, hitting inside 5 feet on the last three on Nos. 9, 11 and 12. Haas hit left into the water on the short par-3 fourth en route to a double bogey. He hit a 6-iron to a foot to set up a birdie on No. 8, made a 5-foot birdie putt on 12 and closed with six pars.

Ironman triathlon: Frodeno and Ryf are the winners KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — Germany’s Jan Frodeno and Switzerland’s Daniela Ryf successfully defended their Ironman triathlon world championships Saturday, each outpacing former world champions. Frodeno’s time of 8 hours, 6 minutes, 30 seconds was the third-fastest in the event’s 38-year history, and Ryf had an 8:46:46 to smash the women’s course record by more than 5 minutes. The 35-year-old Frodeno had the third-fastest swim and the eighth-fastest bike split, before running away from 2014 world champion and fellow German triathlete Sebastian Kienle early in the marathon. Kienle finished second at 8:10:02, and Patrick Lange, also from Germany, was third at 8:11:14. With a run time of 2:39:45, Lange broke the 27-year-old course record set by Mark Allen in 1989. Australian Craig Alexander set the course record of 8:03:56 in 2011. Frodeno was greeted at the finish line by wife Emma and infant son Luca. “It feels that much sweeter,” he said. “It’s been a long year with lots of sacrifices. I’m just grateful to be here.” Tim O’Donnell was the top American, finishing sixth at 8:16:20.

(AP Photos/Mark J Terrill) The 29-year-old Ryf took the lead early on the bike and built a 20-minute cushion over three-time champion Mirinda Carfrae. “That was my best race ever,” Ryf said. “Thanks so much to my team. I doubted all week whether I was strong enough on the bike and now I’m breaking the

record in Kona. I didn’t even feel any pain.” Carfrae, from Australia, was second at 9:10:30. “I was just trying to put together a solid marathon after such a rough day,” she said. “Honestly, Daniela was in a different league today. I’ll take the best of the rest today.

Third was Heather Jackson, who became the first American to make the podium in 10 years, with a time of 9:11:32. The race consisted of 2.4mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike leg and full 26.2-mile marathon run. It offered a professional prize purse of $650,000.

Pumped up: Brady passes for 406 yards in return for Patriots By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — Another win in the books, Tom Brady jogged off the field as he’s done so many times before. As the Patriots fans who invaded Cleveland cheered and chanted his name, Brady waved and smiled before heading into the locker room and celebrating with his teammates. His eyes only focused forward, he savoured every second. He missed this. “I’m back doing what I love to do,” he said. Looking razor-sharp at times and relatively rust-free after serving his four-game “Deflategate” suspension, Brady passed for 406 yards and threw three touchdowns to Martellus Bennett in his hyped return as the Patriots thumped the Cleveland Browns 33-13 on Sunday.

NFL CAPSULES PACKERS 23, GIANTS 16 GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) — Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdowns passes in an otherwise choppy night for the Green Bay offence, and the Packers’ defence rattled the New York Giants and limited Odell Beckham Jr in a 23-16 victory Sunday night. Rodgers was 23 of 45 for 259 yards and also threw two interceptions. Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams each had highlightreel touchdown catches to help the Packers (3-1) build an 11-point halftime lead. But the offence was mired by uncharacteristic drops, and couple of big plays were called back by penalties. Mason Crosby kicked three field goals, including two in the fourth quarter. New York’s Eli Manning was 18 of 35 for 199 yards and was sacked three times. COLTS 29, BEARS 23 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Andrew Luck threw a 35-yard TD pass to T.Y. Hilton with 3:43 left to lead the Colts past the Bears. It’s the first time the Colts (2-3) defeated the Bears in Indianapolis. After hearing a clamouring for changes all week, Indy went to the hurry-up offence and Luck made the alterations look good early and late. When the Colts opened up the passing game and took shots down the field, they were efficient. When they didn’t, they bogged down. Brian Hoyer was solid in his third straight start throwing for 397 yards and two touchdowns for Chicago (1-4). LIONS 24, EAGLES 23 DETROIT (AP) — Matt Prater kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:28 left and Darius Slay made an over-the-shoulder interception on the next snap, helping the Lions hand Carson Wentz his first loss with a victory over the Eagles. The Lions (2-3) had lost three straight. The Eagles (3-1) turned the ball over for the first time this season with 2:34 remaining when Ryan

New England’s star quarterback was back — much to the relief of teammates and Patriots fans everywhere — following a ban for his role in the scandal in which an NFL investigation found that the four-time Super Bowl champion Patriots under-inflated footballs in the 2015 AFC championship game. Brady fought Commissioner Roger Goodell’s ruling for more than a year before he begrudgingly accepted his punishment. And while it appeared he took out some frustration on the Browns (0-5), Brady insisted he’s not seeking revenge. “This isn’t a time for me to reflect,” he said. “There’s no point at looking back at anything. Whether we won Super Bowls or lost championship games or the last four weeks, none of it matters. “I’ve just moved on, man.” Brady passed for 271 yards in the first half as the Patriots (4-1) Mathews fumbled on a hit by Slay. The loose football was recovered by Tyrunn Walker at the Philadelphia 45. Matthew Stafford set up the game-winning kick by converting a third-and-4 from the Eagles 39 with a perfectly placed pass on a crossing route to Golden Tate, who drew an unnecessary roughness penalty on Malcolm Jenkins. REDSKINS 16, RAVENS 10 BALTIMORE (AP) — The Redskins used an 85-yard punt return by Jamison Crowder and an uncharacteristically strong performance by their defence to beat the Ravens. It was the third straight win for the Redskins (3-2), who came in with the league’s 29th-ranked defence. Washington allowed a touchdown on the game’s opening drive and smothered the Ravens (3-2) the rest of the way. The game wasn’t decided until the final minute, when an apparent 23-yard touchdown catch by Baltimore’s Breshad Perriman was overturned by replay. Perriman got his right foot down in the end zone, but his left foot was out of bounds. Crowder scored Washington’s first TD with a sensational run through the middle of the Baltimore punt return team in the second quarter. COWBOYS 28, BENGALS 14 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ezekiel Elliott ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns, fellow rookie Dak Prescott threw for a score and ran for another TD, and the Cowboys beat the Bengals. Prescott had his first turnover in five games starting in place of injured Tony Romo, a fumble when being sacked late in the third quarter. But Prescott extended his NFL rookie record to 155 passes without an interception to start his career. He completed 18 of 24 passes for 227 yards. Elliott, on only 15 carries, became the first Cowboys rookie with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games. Dallas (4-1) has won four in a row. The Bengals (2-3) already have a losing record a year after being 8-0 midway through the season.

FALCONS 23, BRONCOS 16 DENVER (AP) — Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons didn’t need another 300-yard performance from Julio Jones to decipher Denver’s dazzling defence and wreck Paxton Lynch’s first NFL start. Using a steady dose of I-formation runs and short passes that put Denver’s linebackers in coverage, the Falcons (4-1) handed the Super Bowl champs their first loss since December 20 at Pittsburgh and left the Minnesota Vikings (5-0) as the NFL’s last unbeaten team. The Broncos (4-1) were on their heels having to respect the play-action because Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman were so effective running the ball, combining for 119 yards and a 4.4yard average. STEELERS 31, JETS 13 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger passed for 380 yards and four touchdowns and the surging Steelers pulled away in the second half for a win over the Jets. Sammie Coates caught six passes for a career-high 139 yards and two scores, including a 72yard catch-and-run for a score on Pittsburgh’s opening drive as the Steelers moved the ball at will against a secondary missing injured star Darrelle Revis. Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell racked up 154 yards of total offence, including a career-high nine receptions, while Antonio Brown caught nine passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. The AllPro receiver, who has been fined on multiple occasions this season for crossing the line during his celebratory dances, simply handed the ball to a fan in the stands. Pittsburgh (4-1) played without starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert, but had little trouble protecting Roethlisberger from one of the NFL’s top defensive lines. The Jets fell to 1-4. BILLS 30, RAMS 19 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nickell Robey-Coleman returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown, LeSean McCoy rushed for 150 yards, and the Bills won their third consecutive game by defeating the Rams. Robey-Coleman stepped in

Brady threw two short TD passes in the first half to Bennett before hooking up with his new teammate on a 37-yarder to give the Patriots a 30-7 lead in the third. He thoroughly enjoyed his return, even posing like Olympic track star Usain Bolt after a 4-yard run to signal for a first down. “I don’t run much, and when I do I get excited,” he said, smiling. Coach Bill Belichick replaced Brady with 6:02 left, greeting him on the sideline with a handshake and pat on the back. The 39-year-old was far from perfect, overthrowing Julian Edelman for a possible long TD, but Brady spread the ball around and showed a nice touch on a few passes, including a floater to Rob Gronkowski for 37 yards in the fourth. “We hadn’t seen him in a while,” said Edelman, Brady’s teammate

for eight seasons who was not surprised by the performance. “You train with a guy. You go to camp with a guy. You’ve played a number of years with a guy. To see what he’s gone through, you’re going to get excited.” Following the game, Brady basked in the adulation from the Patriots fans ringing the entrance to the tunnel, Following his news conference, Brady stylish as always in a blue tailored suit, posed for a few photos with fans before he was greeted by friends, including former Browns tight end Aaron Shea, who threw his arms around his Michigan teammate. LeGarrette Blount added a 1-yard score for the Patriots, who all drew inspiration from Brady’s return. “We were all intense today, all amped up,” said Gronkowski, who had five catches for 109 yards. “Tom always brings the ampness to the table.”

front of rookie receiver Pharoh Cooper and strolled down the sideline to put the Bills (3-2) ahead 23-16 with 3:54 left in the third quarter. The big play allowed the Bills to finish off the Rams (3-2) and end their three-game winning streak. Robey-Coleman added another interception in the final minutes. The Bills stopped Bradley Marquez on a fake punt at the Rams 25 with 3:41 remaining. Tyrod Taylor then threw a 6-yard touchdown to Marquise Goodwin to put the game out of reach.

went 20 for 29 for 163 yards with no interceptions, and ran seven times for 60 yards. DeMarco Murray added 121 yards rushing for the Titans, who totalled 235 on the ground. They improved to 2-3, and Miami fell to 1-4. Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins offence turned in another woeful performance aside from the occasional long gain. Rookie Jakeem Grant scored on a 74-yard punt return, Damien Williams had a 55-yard, catchand-run to set up a touchdown, and DeVante Parker made a 50yard reception that led to a field goal.

RAIDERS 34, CHARGERS 31 OAKLAND, California (AP) — Derek Carr threw a go-ahead 21-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree on a fourth-and-2 gamble and added another TD pass to Amari Cooper to lead the Raiders to a victory over the mistake-prone Chargers. San Diego (1-4) committed four turnovers and then botched the hold on a potential tying field goal. Rookie Drew Kaser couldn’t hold the snap on what would have been a 36-yard field goal attempt. The Raiders (4-1) took over with 2 minutes left and ran out most of the clock to get a third straight win for the first time in five years and hand San Diego its 10th straight division loss. Oakland took the lead on a bold call late in the third quarter. Facing a fourth-and-2 at the 21 late in the third quarter trailing by five, coach Jack Del Rio once again trusted his offence to make a big play and it paid off. Carr found Crabtree deep down the left side for the touchdown that put the Raiders up 25-24. A 2-point conversion pass to Cooper gave Oakland a threepoint lead and Jamize Olawale added a 1-yard run that made it 34-24 on a drive set up by Kaser’s 16-yard punt. TITANS 30, DOLPHINS 17 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Marcus Mariota threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score, helping the Titans overcome a handful of big plays by the Dolphins. Mariota bounced back with a strong game after totalling three interceptions and no TD passes in losses the past two weeks. He

VIKINGS 31, TEXANS 13 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Adam Thielen caught a touchdown pass to cap Minnesota’s opening drive and finished with a career-high 127 yards, and the Vikings defence flustered Brock Osweiler and the Texans. Marcus Sherels returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown and Cordarelle Patterson scored on another sharp throw by Sam Bradford, who produced another turnover-free game and deftly guided the Vikings (5-0) into their bye week. Brock Osweiler was overmatched by Minnesota’s relentless rush and coverage, finishing 19 for 42 for 184 yards, one interception and a late touchdown pass while taking four sacks. The Texans (3-2) were denied on 12 of 13 third downs, unable or unwilling to do much other than dump off short passes. Lamar Miller only had eight carries for 20 yards during a dud of a performance by the Texans that felt a lot like the 27-0 loss at New England two weeks ago. CARDINALS 33, 49ERS 21 SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — With Carson Palmer sidelined by a concussion, the one-win Arizona Cardinals turned to Larry Fitzgerald, David Johnson and an opportunistic defence for a muchneeded victory. Drew Stanton threw two touchdown passes to Fitzgerald in the quarterback’s first start in two years, Johnson ran for two scores and the Cardinals capitalised on San Francisco mistakes to beat the 49ers 33-21 Thursday night.

Rosberg wins Japanese GP to extend lead over Hamilton SUZUKA (AP) - Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg capitalised on a slow start by teammate Lewis Hamilton to win the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday and widen his lead in the Formula One world drivers’ championship. Rosberg, who started from pole position, controlled the race throughout and finished 4.9 seconds ahead of Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who held off Hamilton in close racing over the final few laps. “The start went really well,” Rosberg said. “Everything went well, and then it was just controlling the pits and the gaps to Max in the race. It was a perfect weekend to win on this legendary track.” With four races remaining, Rosberg holds a 33-point lead over Hamilton. “It’s better that way than the other way round but it’s still Lewis that’s my teammate, so I always need to

reckon with him,” Rosberg said. “He’s going to be going for it in the last four races. There’s still a long way to go.” The result clinched the constructors’ championship for Mercedes for the third year running. Hamilton, who started second, made another of the poor starts which has been among Mercedes few weak points this season, and dropped back to eighth on the opening lap. However, the defending world champion worked his way through the field well. Desperately needing as many points as possible in the championship race, Hamilton attempted a bold passing move on Verstappen on the penultimate lap. Exiting the Spoon curve, the Briton tried a move into the chicane but Verstappen blocked his path and Hamilton was forced up an escape road. Hamilton complained over his team radio that the 19-year-old Dutch-

Hamilton said his poor start was down to wheel spin, rather than any preoccupation with the damp patch in front of his grid slot due to overnight rain. “I was just working my way up from there - it was

his 23rd in Formula One, moving the German driver into a tie for 12th place on the all-time list with Nelson Piquet. Rosberg started the previous two races at Suzuka from pole position only to be overtaken by Hamilton. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel had an opportunity to pass Hamilton immediately after the second round of pitstops but was unable to and finished fourth ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen. Daniel Ricciardo, of Red Bull, who won the previous race in Malaysia, was sixth. The Force India pair Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg finished seventh and eighth, with the team eking out a 10-point gap over Williams, whose drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas finished ninth and 10th on a one-stop strategy. Every driver finished the race, only the seventh time in 952 world championship races that has happened.

TOKYO (AP) — Nick Kyrgios claimed his third, and biggest, title of the year, when rallying to beat David Goffin at the Rakuten Japan Open on Sunday. The big-serving Australian won a tight match, in which there were only three breaks, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Goffin was left to rue five spurned break points in the third game of the second set, when he had Kyrgios 0-40. Kyrgios held, with the help of three aces, then broke in the next game. The Kyrgios serve proved crucial, as he fired 21 of his 25 aces in the final two sets. In contrast, Goffin’s serve fell apart in the third set, when he double-faulted six times. Fittingly, Kyrgios served an ace down the middle to take the title. “In the first set he was not serving like he did in the second and the third,” said Goffin. “Then he was serving at 215kph with a lot of precision. I had to be solid on my serve and wait for my opportunity. I didn’t take it. “He tried to go big on the second serve because he didn’t want to play a lot of rallies. He knew if he wanted to win he had to serve well, and that’s what he did. That’s his best weapon.”
