They forced us out of our zone, but we were able to find success playing man to man. “We played two good games and it’s good we could get two wins ahead of this week’s rebranding. These games also gave us a good idea of what we need to work on as we move forward.” They outscored the Bantams by seven points off turnovers (17-10), by four points in the paint (3834) and seven on second chance points (16-9).
In game one on Friday night, the Caribs won decisively 76-62. Sylvestre led the way with a double double - 20 points, 11 rebounds and an assist. COB scored 23 points off the bench and 24 points off turnovers. It was the second edition of the school’s homecoming. “I think our school did extremely well in supporting our team and I think this will be the way forward as we transition into a university this week,” said COB assistant athletic director Sean Bastian. “This speaks volumes as to what campus life will include as a university. “As far as the effort of the team, they really played well in both games. They will play Trinity again in January in Tam-
pa, and we’re looking for more opportunities like this to continue to grow our programme.” This year’s men’s basketball team is made up of players from New Providence, Grand Bahama, Exuma and Eleuthera. • Making up the team are the following: Centre – Justin Munroe, a 6-7 junior from Jack Hayward High in Grand Bahama, who is majoring in physical education. Adney Bethel picked up the win on four hits and seven strike outs. Lyle Sawyer suffered the loss on eight hits and seven strike outs. “This feels good. After winning in 2010, our Commonwealth championship, we came back with just a team from JC (James Cistern) and the young guys wanted it, they were hungry and we just swept through it,” Adney Bethel said. “After losing 4-1 to New Providence and 1-0 to Abaco, we pushed that aside and we kept playing. I just thank God for the night. We are the Commonwealth champions of the Bahamas, JC.” • Here’s a look at the playoff and bronze medal games played on Saturday and Sunday: Jets 4, Hitmen 2: Eleuthera came up with one run in the third and added three more in the fourth as they held off New Providence in the bronze medal game on Sunday for their second straight win. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Latavius Murray ran for 114 yards and three touchdowns and the Oakland Raiders showed they were ready for prime time, beating the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos 30-20 on Sunday night. In what was being billed as the biggest game in Oakland since the team went to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, the Raiders (7-2) put together a complete effort to overpower the Broncos (6-3) and take over sole possession of first place in the AFC West. Derek Carr threw for 184 yards and did not turn the ball over, Khalil Mack had two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery and the Raiders outrushed Denver 218-33 behind a dominant performance in the trenches. The performance was to the delight of an energetic crowd at the Coliseum, excited to host a prime time Sunday night game for the first time in more than a decade. After 13 straight seasons without a playoff berth or winning record, the Raiders have shown they are ready to contend in the AFC in the second season under coach Jack Del Rio. Oakland got off to its best start in 15 years by beating up on lesser teams, but the win over the defending champion Broncos showed the progress the franchise has made since starting 0-10 two years ago. Trevor Siemian looked shaky at times for Denver but did throw two touchdown passes, including a short pass behind the line that Kapri Biggs turned into a 69-yard touchdown catch and run in the fourth quarter.

JACKSON JACOB AND OOKS BEGIN TITLE DEFENCE WITH SPOTLESS 4-0 RECORD By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE collegiate basketball season has tipped off in Canada and several Bahamian players plan to figure prominently this season for their emerging programmes. Leading the way for the Bahamian contingent is Jackson Jacob and his Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks as they look to repeat as Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men’s national champions. Jacob was named the MVP of last year’s tournament when he finished with 13 points in the finale and averaged 20 points per game throughout the tournament. The Ooks began that title defence with a spotless 4-0 record
so far and Jackson has been the catalyst thus far, averaging 25.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. In the season opener, Jacob scored 39 points and grabbed nine rebounds in an 85-68 win over GRPC. In the second matchup between the two, Jacob posted a double double - 23 points and 11 rebounds - in the 73-66 win. In a 67-65 thrilling win over Keyano, Jacob again led the way with 25 points, seven rebounds and three rebounds. He completed the series with 16 points in his team’s 74-44 win. Ooks head coch Mike Connolly explained the decision to nominate Jacob for athlete-ofthe-week honours: “He scored 62 points and grabbed 20 rebounds,
shooting 50 per cent from the field. At times, he took over the game to help us win, grabbing key offensive rebounds and making important shots down the stretch.” They return to action November 11 against Lakeland. The Niagara College Knights trio of Bahamian players – Van Hutchinson Jr, Kevin Cooper and Jordan Wilson, have helped them to a 2-1 start. In the season opener, they fell 84-80 to Sheridan but Hutchinson finished with a double double – 18 points and 10 rebounds. Wilson nearly finished with a triple double, six points, nine rebounds and seven assists. In game two, Niagara won 8473 over Mohawk and Hutchinson finished with 24 points and seven
rebounds. Wilson added 13 points and eight rebounds and Cooper saw his first minutes of the season with two points, two rebounds and one block. They followed with a 71-66 win over Humber. Hutchinson finished with six points, eight rebounds and three assists while Wilson finished with two points and three rebounds. The Knights return to action on November 18 at Lambton. “I can’t explain the impact the Bahamian players have had. Our programme three years ago was second to last place, this year if the ball bounced in the opposite direction a few times we could have been a championship team, said Knights coach Keith Vassell. “The Bahamian players have been stellar and it’s something

Bolt, who won the 100and 200-metre sprints and the 4x100 relay gold medals at the Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro Olympics, attended the launch in Melbourne on Friday to explain a format that features a mix of power, endurance and team events in sprints, distance and field disciplines. “This will be track and field as it’s never been seen before and that’s why I’m involved — not only as a competitor, but also as a team captain,” said Bolt, the world-record holder in the 100 and 200 and the
most dominant sprinter of all time. “Nitro Athletics is what track and field needs — a fresh way to present the sport.” The first series will be held at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium and feature six teams of 24 athletes: 12 women and 12 men. Bolt, who has never raced in Australia, will reportedly receive $1 million for his involvement in the series, which is backed by Athletics Australia and the Victoria state government. Hayward scores 28 in season debut, leads Jazz over the Knicks By MICHAEL SCOTTO Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Gordon Hayward quickly regained his scoring touch, especially from the foul line. Hayward made all 14 of his free throws and finished with 28 points in his season debut, leading the Utah Jazz over the New York Knicks 114-109 Sunday. Hayward had been sidelined since breaking his right ring finger in training camp. He led the team in scoring last season, averaging nearly 20 points per game. “I think any time you add a player of his caliber, everybody gets to do what they’re good at a little easier,” Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. “There’s a trickle-down effect. I think he gives guys confidence. It allows us to play small with more size and more force,” he said. Hayward shot 6 of 17 from the field, including 2 of 8 on 3-pointers. “I think, hopefully, we can be better than we were

The Jazz reeled off nine straight points to begin the fourth quarter for an 87-80 and never trailed again. “This is a game that I felt we kind of let slide and slip from us,” Anthony said. “We gave this game away. Whatever was the cause of it, we let this one slip out of our hands.” Porzingis and Anthony combined for 24 points in the first quarter, shooting 10 of 12 to help the Knicks take a 30-20 lead. Hayward scored 10 in the second quarter as the Jazz closed to 54-49 at halftime. Porzingis and Anthony totaled 14 points in the third period for an 80-78 lead. Hood scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, as did Rose “(Hood) was aggressive,” Hill said. “When he’s aggressive, we’re a different team. Like I told him going into the fourth quarter when Gordon and I were sitting down, he has to take over the game.”
“Even though Gordon’s back, we need him to be aggressive and be another force on that offensive end,” he said. TIP-INS Jazz: Joe Johnson came off the bench for the first time since Dec. 9, 2003. He scored 10 points. ... Alec Burks (ankle) and Boris Diaw (leg) did not dress. Knicks: Coach Jeff Hornacek praised Hayward before the game, saying, “If he wasn’t in the West, he’d probably have been an AllStar by now.” The coach added: “I think the game has slowed down for him. It seems very easy for him. He knows exactly what he’s doing out there in pick-androlls, where to get his shots, when to take the big shots.” ... Maurice Ndour and Marshall Plumlee were inactive. ROSE’S ROLE “People lead in different ways,” Rose said. “You have your leaders like Kobe (Bryant). He’s more personal, he’s more intimate and in your face about it. You have leaders like myself and you’ve got Tim Duncan, where we lead by example by coming in every day, being consistent with our workouts and just showing people that we’re focused and we’re trying to get better. I lead by example.” UP NEXT Jazz: Visit Philadelphia today. Knicks: Host Brooklyn on Wednesday.
MCCOLLUM MATCHES CAREER HIGH, BLAZERS BEAT GRIZZLIES 100-94 By CLAY BAILEY Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — CJ McCollum matched his career high with 37 points, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter to help the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 100-94 on Sunday. McCollum had 10 straight Portland points during one stretch to put the game away. Portland used eight straight points to erase a Memphis advantage early in the fourth quarter. Even when Memphis made a comeback, McCollum converted a pair of 3-pointers to thwart the rally. Chandler Parsons, making his first start for Memphis since his offseason signing, got off to a slow start, missing all eight of his shots in the game Portland, which made 14 of 33 shots from outside the arc in the game, converted 4 of 8 from 3-point range in the first quarter. But Memphis was able to force 10 Portland turnovers, control the boards and rally late in the first half. Conley’s 3-pointer from 31 feet at the horn, gave Memphis a 51-47 at the break. Gay had nine points in the fourth quarter as the Kings (3-5) snapped a four-game losing streak by winning the finale of their five-game road trip. DeMar DeRozan led the Raptors (4-

Drake’s 96-yard kickoff return helps Miami beat Jets 27-23 By STEVEN WINE AP Sports Writer MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Rookie returner Kenyan Drake was delighted to find himself at the bottom of a pile of players, because they were teammates in the end zone. Drake caused the celebration when he scored untouched on a 96-yard kickoff return with 5:15 left yesterday, the final swing in a seesaw game that helped the Miami Dolphins beat the New York Jets, 27-23. Jay Ajayi came up short in his bid to become the first NFL rusher to have three consecutive 200-yard games, but he managed 111 yards and helped to run out the clock after the Dolphins came from behind for the third time. A botched Dolphins punt led to a touchdown that put New York ahead 23-20. The Jets pinned Miami’s Jakeem Grant deep on the ensuing kickoff, but Antonio Allen was flagged for offside. On the re-kick, the weary coverage team found itself chasing a fresh Drake , Grant’s backup. He sped past the final Jet — kicker Nick Folk — into the clear.
“I was trying to remember what my track coach said: to keep those knees up,” Drake said. Even his teammates gave chase. “Everyone was running down the sideline,” Ajayi said. “I was trying to beat him to the end zone. I was so excited for him.” The Dolphins (4-4) won their third game in a row, while New York (3-6) fell deeper into last place in the AFC East. The Jets hurt themselves with four personal foul penalties, two interceptions thrown by Ryan Fitzpatrick and numerous squandered chances. Fitzpatrick missed four plays midway through the second half because of a left knee injury and wore a brace when he returned. He said he’ll undergone an MRI exam Monday. Ajayi was hit behind the line on many of his 24 carries but gradually wore down the Jets and had 55 yards in the fourth quarter. “I’m never going to go away from him,” Miami coach Adam Gase said. “His job is to keep hammering it.” Also impressive with his ballcarrying skills was 335-pound Miami defensive tackle Jordan Phil-
NFL CAPSULES LIONS 22, VIKINGS 16 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Matthew Stafford threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate, who vaulted into the end zone in overtime to give the Detroit Lions a 22-16 victory over the Minnesota Vikings yesterday. After Matt Prater kicked a 58-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime, Tate finished the opening drive when he ran through arm tackles by Xavier Rhodes and Harrison Smith and leaped in for the winning score. Stafford completed 23 of 36 passes for 219 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Lions (5-4), who have won four of their past five games. Tate had 11 catches for 79 yards. Sam Bradford completed 31 of 40 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (5-3), who started the season 5-0 but have imploded since coming out of the bye. Stefon Diggs had a career-high 13 catches for 80 yards. GIANTS 28, EAGLES 23 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Eli Manning threw for four touchdowns and New York’s defence had two interceptions and three stops on fourth downs to beat Philadelphia. The Giants (5-3) won their third straight game, holding off the Eagles (4-4 after a 3-0 start) after Manning was intercepted with less than two minutes to go. Two of Manning’s touchdowns went to Odell Beckham Jr, with the others to Roger Lewis Jr and Sterling Shepard. Manning moved into ninth place in yards passing with 46,428. Manning, in his 13th NFL season, threw for 257 yards against Philadelphia. He passed Vinny Testaverde, who had 46,233 yards through the air. RAVENS 21, STEELERS 14 BALTIMORE (AP) — Joe Flacco threw a 95-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace, and Baltimore frustrated an ineffective Ben Roethlisberger in a victory over Pittsburgh. Baltimore (4-4) snapped a fourgame losing streak and moved into a tie atop the AFC North with the Steelers (4-4), who have dropped three in a row. Three weeks after undergoing surgery on his right knee, Roethlisberger returned well ahead of schedule. Playing for the first time since October 16, the 13-year veteran looked out of sync until the fourth quarter, when he directed a 75-yard drive that got the Steelers to 21-7 with 8:38 remaining. Before that, Pittsburgh’s offence produced only two first downs and was limited to 69 yards. The Steelers finished with 36 yards rushing, 32 by Le’Veon Bell. Roethlisberger ran for a 4-yard score with 48 seconds left, but Chris Boswell botched the onside kick — barely knocking it off the tee — and Baltimore ran out the clock.

CHARGERS 43, TITANS 35 SAN DIEGO (AP) — Melvin Gordon ran for a career-high 196 yards and scored the go-ahead TD on a 1-yard run, and defensive backs Dwight Lowery and Brandon Flowers scored on turnovers by Marcus Mariota to lead the Chargers over Tennessee, which still hasn’t won in San Diego since 1990. The Chargers (4-5) won two days before the team will ask voters to approve a billion-dollar subsidy for a new downtown stadium to replace aging Qualcomm Stadium. The measure was polling well short of the twothirds supermajority needed to pass. Gordon, who leads the NFL with 11 touchdowns, scored on a 1-yard run with 5:28 left in the third quarter to give the Chargers a 26-21 lead. He ran 32 times, and broke a 47-yard run in the closing minutes. He also caught four passes for 65 yards. Mariota, who led the Titans to a 21-19 lead by guiding two quick scoring drives on either side of halftime, helped the Chargers surge to a 12-point lead when he fumbled late in the third quarter. Lowery picked up the ball ran 43 yards for a touchdown and a 33-21 lead. The Titans (4-5) have lost seven straight in San Diego since 1993, when they were the Houston Oilers. The franchise’s last victory in San Diego was in 1990. COLTS 31, PACKERS 26 GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Frank Gore rushed for two touchdowns, Jordan Todman had a tone-setting 99-yard return on the opening kickoff and Indianapolis held on for a win over Green Bay. Andrew Luck shook off two interceptions in the first quarter to finish with 281 yards passing and a touchdown. The Colts, who had allowed an NFL-worst 31 sacks coming into the game, gave their quarterback decent protection. Indianapolis (4-5) heads into a bye week with a confidence-building victory after surviving a vintage Aaron Rodgers comeback. His 3-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb with 3:29 left got Green Bay (4-4) within five, capping a 14-point spurt in four-plus minutes. Rodgers finished 26 of 43 for 297 yards with three scores and an interception. SAINTS 41, 49ERS 23 SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Drew Brees threw a pair of touchdown passes to Michael Thomas and another to Mark Ingram, who also ran for a 75-yard score a week after being benched and New Orleans beat lowly San Francisco. Ingram, replaced by Tim Hightower during last Sunday’s 25-20 win against Seattle after fumbling for a second straight game, scored his second straight TD for the Saints on a career-long run to answer immediately after DuJuan Harris caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick. Ingram’s run also was the
COSTLY PENALTIES The Jets were amped up at the start to stop Ajayi — perhaps too much so. Ajayi lost 3, 1 and 5 yards on his first three carries. But two of the losses were negated by an unnecessary roughness penalty on Buster Skrine, and a taunting penalty on Calvin Pryor. On his fourth carry, Ajayi found a big hole and ran 20 yards for a touchdown to put Miami ahead 7-3. The Jets’ Sheldon Richardson was flagged for unnecessary roughness twice in the second quarter. ABSENT AT FIRST Jets defensive linemen Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson sat out the first quarter and entered the game at the start of the second period. A team official said their absences at the start weren’t injury-related, but
second-longest in Saints history and he wound up with 158 yards rushing as San Francisco allowed an opposing 100-yard runner for the seventh straight game. The Saints (4-4) have grabbed back some momentum and returned to the race in the NFC South. They won for the fourth time in five games following an 0-3 start and eighth in the past 10 regular-season meetings with San Francisco. The Niners (1-7) didn’t have nearly enough to avoid their seventh straight loss since shutting out the Rams to start the season. PANTHERS 13, RAMS 10 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cam Newton persevered through five sacks to pass for 225 yards and a touchdown, and Carolina’s defence shut down Los Angeles. Greg Olsen caught a touchdown pass in the first half and Graham Gano added two fourth-quarter field goals for the Panthers (3-5), who won their second straight after a four-game skid. Newton’s offence managed just 244 yards against the Rams’ vaunted defence, but the Panthers nearly shut out Los Angeles in a defence-dominated game. Case Keenum passed for 296 yards for the Rams (3-5), who have lost four straight after a strong start to their homecoming season. Los Angeles’ scoreless streak reached 102 minutes, 12 seconds before Greg Zuerlein’s 25yard field goal with 8:01 to play. COWBOYS 35, BROWNS 10 CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes and kept any talk for Tony Romo unnecessary, leading Dallas over winless Cleveland. Rookie Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 92 yards and scored twice and durable tight end Jason Witten had 134 yards receiving for the Cowboys, off to their best start since 2007. Prescott has won seven straight starts since losing the season opener, and with the Cowboys (7-1) leading the NFC East and getting better, there’s no reason for the team to accelerate Romo’s return from a back injury. The miserable Browns (0-9) dropped their franchise-record 12th straight game going back to last season and are 3-27 in their past 30. They also started 0-9 in 1975. CHIEFS 19, JAGUARS 14 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City stuffed Jacksonville on fourth down with less than 2 minutes left deep in its own territory, preserving a victory despite finishing without five offensive starters. Nick Foles threw for 187 yards and a first-half touchdown toss to Albert Wilson, and helped to set up four field goals by Cairo Santos, as Kansas City (6-2) won its 10th consecutive home game. Meanwhile, the Jaguars (2-6) couldn’t overcome four turnovers — including a fumble at the goal line in the fourth quarter — in their first game with quarterback coach Nathaniel Hackett directing the offence.
GIANTS LOSE RECEIVER VICTOR CRUZ, LEFT GUARD TO INJURIES (AP) — The New York Giants lost both wide receiver Victor Cruz and left guard Justin Pugh to injuries yesterday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Pugh sprained his right knee early in the second quarter and did not return. Cruz had one catch for 46 yards when he hurt his ankle in the first half as the Giants built a 21-10 lead over the Eagles.
Cruz tore up his knee in October 2014 against the Eagles and missed the rest of that season and all of 2015 with a calf injury. Eagles safety Terrence Brooks left the Giants’ 28-23 win with a hamstring issue. Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin sustained a groin injury in the first quarter against Jacksonville and did not return. He missed practice Thursday
with a sore groin, but practiced Friday. It wasn’t clear when Maclin aggravated the injury, but he couldn’t come up with a pass while sliding to the ground on the Chiefs’ first possession. Jaguars wide receiver Allen Hurns hurt his ankle on Jacksonville’s second offensive play in the second half. He returned, then left again to be evaluated for a concussion. Jacksonville line-
backer Myles Jack left with a hip injury. Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick left his team’s 27-23 loss at Miami late in the third quarter after being shaken up on a late by tackle Jordan Phillips following a throw. The Dolphins were penalized. Fitzpatrick walked off the field accompanied by trainers and went to the locker room. He was replaced by Bryce Petty briefly.
declined to say whether they were for disciplinary reasons. “Coach’s decision,” coach Todd Bowles said. WHAT FEUD? The feud between Marshall and Byron Maxwell produced a lot of trash-talking, but Marshall managed only 45 yards on six catches. The Jets receiver complained during the week that Maxwell held him on every play in their only previous meeting. RUGBY-LIKE The Jets started the game with a field goal at the end of a 13-play drive, and the best was an ad lib. Fitzpatrick scrambled up the middle for 14 yards, and as he was about to be tackled, he lateraled to Bilal Powell for an additional 8 yards. STILL PHYSICAL Miami receiver Jarvis Landry, who said he would remain aggressive after a hefty fine for a block that injured the Bills’ Aaron Williams, kept the pledge. Following a catch he tried to run through tackler Marcus Gilchrist and knocked off the safety’s helmet.

Bale keeps Real Madrid ahead, Messi leads Barca over Sevilla By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer
just outside the relegation zone with 10 points.
MADRID (AP) — With Karim Benzema out injured and Cristiano Ronaldo playing below expectations again, Gareth Bale came through and got the job done for Real Madrid yesterday. Rival Barcelona needed both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez for the result it wanted in a thriller against gritty Sevilla. Bale scored a pair of goals just before halftime to lead Madrid to a 3-0 win over Leganes, securing the Spanish league lead for his team ahead of the city derby against Atletico Madrid. Barcelona stayed two points behind Madrid by coming from behind to defeat Sevilla 2-1 with goals by Messi and Suarez. Madrid reached 27 points after 11 rounds. Atletico, which lost 2-0 at Real Sociedad on Saturday, dropped to fourth place after Villarreal defeated Real Betis 2-0 to move up the standings. Madrid, unbeaten this season, plays against Atletico at the Vicente Calderon on November 19, following the international break. Bale dominated action from the start and was Madrid’s most dangerous forward throughout the match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium, and his first goal came just as the crowd was growing impatient with the team. After a perfect long pass by Francisco “Isco” Alarcon in the 38th minute, Bale calmly found the net after his first attempt was
SEVILLA 1, BARCELONA 2 Messi was the difference again, scoring an equaliser in the 43rd and setting up Suarez’s winner in the 61st in the back-and-forth game at Sevilla. Victor “Vitolo” Machin had put Sevilla ahead in a breakaway in the 15th, speeding past a defender after a perfect through ball by midfielder Pablo Sarabia and firing a low shot past goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. It was the fourth straight win for Barcelona, and Sevilla’s first home loss in the league this season. Sevilla, which had beaten Atletico Madrid at home earlier this season, was looking for another big victory to establish itself as a top contender after the arrival of Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli. Messi and Suarez lead the league in scoring with eight goals each. His second came from close range in first-half injury time. “I’m pleased with the work everyone put in, not any player in particular,” Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said. “There will always be one who makes the difference, but the great thing today was the team.” Bale also had two great
scoring chances early in the second half, first with a close-range shot and then with a header, both requiring difficult saves by Leganes goalkeeper Jon Ander Serantes. The striker has scored three goals in the last two matches for Madrid. Ronaldo’s up-and-down season continued and he had another lacklustre performance at the Bernabeu,
where he hasn’t scored in five straight games, his longest scoreless drought at home since he arrived at Madrid in 2009. Ronaldo, who is set to extend his contract with Madrid until 2021, last scored at the Bernabeu against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on September 14. “I don’t think he’s worried, he looks good and committed,” Zidane said.
“It’s true he likes scoring goals, especially at this stadium, but he’s calm.” Benzema was sidelined on Sunday because of a knee ailment, and replacement Morata got Madrid’s third goal from inside the area after a pass by Toni Kroos in the 76th. It was the fourth consecutive loss for Leganes, which was making its first-division debut at the Bernabeu. It is
OTHER GAMES Villarreal scored a goal in each half to defeat Betis 2-0 and moved to third place with 22 points, five behind Real Madrid. Seventh-placed Athletic Bilbao was held to a 0-0 draw at Espanyol for its third straight game without a league win. Celta Vigo moved to eighth after coming from behind to beat Valencia 2-1 at home. Swedish forward John Guidetti scored Celta’s winner in the 77th.

LIVERPOOL GOES TOP OF EPL, UNITED ENDS 4-MATCH WINLESS RUN By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer LONDON (AP) — There’s an upside to missing out on the Champions League for Liverpool and Chelsea. They have surged into the Premier League’s top two places while England’s participants in Europe’s elite competition failed to win on their return to domestic duties. With no gruelling midweek European games, Chelsea and Liverpool conserved their energy to produce emphatic domestic victories. A day after Chelsea routed Everton 5-0, Liverpool overwhelmed Watford 6-1 yesterday to move a point ahead of its London title rival. Manchester City lost top spot after being held by Middlesbrough on Saturday, dropping to third. Arsenal and Tottenham drew 1-1 in the north London derby on Sunday before champion Leicester was beaten 2-1 by West Bromwich Albion. “It’s a little physical advantage for sure,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said about not playing in the Champions League, which boosts the profits and pres-
tige of participants. What about the less illustrious Europa League where games are played on Thursday night? Manchester United followed up its 4-1 victory at Fenerbahce by winning 3-1 at Swansea to halt a four-match winless run in the Premier League. Southampton, though, came back down to earth after beating Inter Milan by losing 2-1 to a Hull side in the bottom three. LIVERPOOL 6, WATFORD 1 Liverpool occupies top spot for the first time since May 2014 when the team came close to winning the title for the first time since 1990 before a late collapse. Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Emre Can scored in the space of 16 first-half minutes to put Watford out of sight. Roberto Firmino, Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum added further goals in the second half. Liverpool, which has now scored four or more goals in five league matches this season, is a point in front of Chelsea and two ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal.
“When I came here (in October 2015) I asked for time and patience and belief,” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. “And after 11 match days everyone’s asking for guarantees and they are not there. The only thing we have is a pretty good football team.” SWANSEA 1, MANCHESTER UNITED 3 Jose Mourinho was forced to watch from the stands as he served a touchline ban but he will have liked what he saw in south Wales. There was a landmark goal for one of the brashest of players. The first of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s two goals was the 25,000th in the Premier League since the competition’s inception in 1992. Paul Pogba also unleashed a 20yard volley for his second league goal since joining United in August from Juventus for a worldrecord fee of 105 million euros. Swansea is only off the bottom due to Sunderland having an inferior goal difference and Bob Bradley has collected only one point from his first four matches in charge. The first American manager in
the Premier League, Bradley has extended the winless run — which started under the fired Francesco Guidolin — to 10 matches. That’s the worst since Swansea was promoted to the Premier League in 2011. HULL 2, SOUTHAMPTON 1 Hull remains in the relegation zone despite halting a six-game losing streak but is only one point from safety. After Charlie Austin put Southampton in front from a first-half penalty, Robert Snodgrass and Michael Dawson scored in a two-minute goal blitz for Hull around the hour. ARSENAL 1, TOTTENHAM 1 Harry Kane made a scoring return from injury Sunday, grabbing the equaliser at Arsenal to preserve Tottenham’s unbeaten start. Kane, who has missed 10 games after damaging ligaments in his right ankle, converted a penalty six minutes into the second half to prevent Arsenal going top of the table. In a north London derby played at a frantic pace, Tottenham gift-
ed Arsenal the lead just before halftime when Kevin Wimmer inadvertently headed Mesut Ozil’s free kick into his own goal. Despite Spurs being on their longest unbeaten run in the league — 11 games — in more than 50 years they remain fifth. LEICESTER 1, WEST BROMWICH ALBION 2 Leicester’s 20-game unbeaten home run in the league, stretching back to September 2015, is over and the team is only two points above the relegation zone. Having been defeated only three times in the unexpected title-winning season, Leicester’s defence has begun with five losses in 11 games. All the goals came in the second half. Leicester forward Islam Slimani did quickly cancel out James Morrison’s opener but Matt Phillips scored the goal that moved West Brom to 11th and sent the hosts tumbling to 14th place. Leicester’s focus is on Europe, with only one point required from its last two group stage games to book a place in the Champions League round of 16.

Andy Murray celebrates rise to top with Paris Masters title By JEROME PUGMIRE AP Sports Writer PARIS (AP) — Celebrating the best season of his career, Andy Murray cemented his rise to No. 1 by beating John Isner 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4 yesterday to win the Paris Masters for the first time. It was his eighth title this year, his 14th in Masters overall. It also ended Isner’s bid for a first Masters title. “I felt really nervous before the match,” Murray said, despite having beaten the big-serving American in all seven of their previous career meetings. Murray will officially replace Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings when they are published today. “It might only be for one week. So, I might as well try and enjoy it,” Murray said. “Because I could lose it at the (ATP) Tour Finals and never be there again.” The 29-year-old Murray is still getting accustomed to his newfound status. “I don’t really know if it’s sunk in or not,” said Murray, who is a three-time Grand Slam winner and a double Olympic champion. “It feels different (to) when I had won a Grand Slam or (the) Olympics.”
Especially in the number of congratulatory messages. “More than I’ve had after any match I have played in my life,” Murray said. “It’s very nice, because you have won the respect of the players.” Murray recently beat Isner 6-1, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, but this was thoroughly contested. “We played last week and the difference was huge,” Murray said. Using 18 aces and hitting plenty of inside-out winners on his massive forehand, Isner generated considerable pressure. But he also wasted six break points overall. In the second set, he was 4-3 ahead and 40-0 up on Murray’s serve, but failed to punish the Briton — last year’s runner-up to Djokovic. But in a rare dip, Murray double-faulted during the tiebreaker and Isner profited to take the set. Isner saved break points on his first two service games of the third set, hanging on as Murray restored his superiority. Then, serving to stay in the match, the 2.08-metre (6-foot-10inch) American double-faulted to trail 0-30. He won a tough first
the net, waiting to congratulate Murray. Murray has won four consecutive tournaments, taking his career tally to 43. Next up is the season-ending ATP finals in London, beginning next Sunday. Murray will cross the English Channel to try and take the title there, having secured his top ranking here. “This has been an incredible journey to get to the top of the rankings,” said Murray, whose brother Jamie is among the world’s best doubles players. “There haven’t been many tennis players from Scotland over the years, and a lot of what we have done is big credit to our parents,” Murray said. “Our mum was a tennis coach. She helped us learn the game really and helped us enjoy the game at a young age.” The 31-year-old Isner, playing in the third Masters final of his career, ends the year without a title. He lost his other final this season to Australian Nick Kyrgios at Atlanta, Georgia, in August. Some small consolation is that he finishes the year with the most aces at 1,159 — the fourth time he has achieved this.

TONIGHT
High: 84° F/29° C Low: 64° F/18° C
Murray broke Isner twice, the first time to move 4-2 up in the first set. Isner fought back, a booming forehand winner giving him two break points in the seventh game. Murray saved the first one with a lob — impressive against such a tall player — and volley. He rescued the second by forcing an unforced error. Serving for the first set, Murray won the first point with an extraordinary backhand retrieve from a speedy Isner forehand that he somehow turned into a crosscourt winner. “That was pretty spectacular from him,” Isner said. “He always clamps down on me when I have a bit of an opening.” In the second set, Isner got a deserved ovation in the eighth game when he won a 20-stroke rally. Showing nimble footwork that belied his size, he traded shots with Murray, winning the point with a superb drop shot and then a forehand winner from Murray’s retrieve. Isner was playing his best tennis of the match and had Murray 0-40 down. Murray recovered but gave Isner another chance at deuce. He missed that chance, too.
