Roberts advances to 2nd round after big win in Florida By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

ollegian Justin Roberts, playing directly out of the men’s main draw singles of the Bluewater Bay Pro Circuit Championships, advanced to the second round with his biggest victory so far this year. The University of South Florida junior, currently ranked at 1,242 on the ATP standings, pulled off a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over 23-year-old No.7 seed American Winston Lin, who is ranked at 873. The Futures Tournament match was played yesterday on the clay courts at the Bluewater Bay Tennis Center in Niceville, Florida. Roberts, who turns 20 on De-
cember 4, is currently the only Bahamian with any ATP points. “It was a good match. I started a little slow and I got broken early,” Roberts told The Tribune after the match. “But I felt like I was playing well, so it was good that I got my chances back. I just stuck with it and eventually I got some opportunities and I capitalised on it and got the win.” Roberts, who said it was a huge win for him, is now

awaiting his secondround opponent. He is scheduled to play the winner of the first match between American Alex Rybakov and German Pimin Haenle. “I just have to go back to practice and continue to work so hard so that I can give it my best every point I play and see where the results take me,” Roberts said. “But if I can continue to improve the way I have been doing, I know that I can continue to per-
form very well this year.” Rodney Carey also participated in the tournament. He won his first round match in the qualifying round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Enrique Paya Gonzalez of Spain before he got eliminated in the second round, losing 7-5, 6-4 to American Aleksandar Kovacevic. Carey, who turned 24 on September 23, is still alive in the tournament. He will team up with American Mwendwa Mbithi to play doubles. Their first round opponents will be Americans Patrick Daciek and Dane Webb. Although he has been performing exceptionally well in doubles for USF, Roberts said the coaching staff has only given him the green light to participate in singles in the tournament.
This is Roberts’ second tournament since returning to school after the summer break. He played last month in Birmingham, Alabama, where he lost in the second round in qualifying 7-5, 6-2 to Vasilly Kichigin from Russia. Roberts, however, had an active summer, playing in six tournaments in June and July in Charlottesville, Virginia, Buffalo, New York, Rochester, New York, Saskatoon, Canada, Godfrey, Illinois and Edwardsville, Illinois. “I feel really good. My results have been improving over the last few months,” Roberts said. “I’ve been working really hard so I’m happy to see that it’s kind of paying off. I’m looking forward to good results the rest of the year.”
Young gymnasts ready for Atlantis Crown Invitational THE Atlantis Crown Invitational will be taken to a “new level” this year, with the introduction of two new exciting competitions and a huge increase in the number of international competitors. The annual gymnastics competition, set for December 16-18 at the Atlantis resort, could potentially bring in more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and supporters. Athletes from across the United States, Panama and Canada are all set to take part in the three-day competition. Additionally, about 100 gymnasts from The Bahamas are expected to participate. This year, organisers will introduce the trampoline and tumbling competition. As a result, club participation has increased by 26 per cent. “We are actually shipping down all the trampolines and everything else for the kids to compete so it’s going to be very, very exciting to see. We have 68 clubs represented. Last year we had 54, so we have a definite jump in the attendees for this year’s event,” said invitational organiser Cindy Schrans. “The event is bigger than last year so we’re pretty excited about that. The event keeps growing every year and that is a direct reflection on the hospitality in The Bahamas, the support we get from the Ministry of Tourism and the local organisations and obviously the

We couldn’t do this without the partnership.” The special guests this year are Svetlana Boginskay, three-time Olympic champion and Sam Mikulak, 2012 US Olympian. Virginia Kelly, marketing director of sports tourism, noted the increase in competitors. “The Atlantis Crown has proven to be a great addition to our annual
sports tourism calendar. Over the past five years we have seen the number of athletes almost tripled and this year, with the addition of a men’s trampoline and tumbling component, this takes the event to a new level, not to mention the growth impact on the number of room nights and the overall revenue boost. This year we could potentially see 3,000 plus athletes
and visitors.” Explaining her estimate, Kelly said based on experience, nearly all athletes will likely be accompanied by a parent or guardian and another supporter. “It’s like a vacation with a twist,” she said. XAVION HOPES TO REPRESENT BAHAMAS IN JUDO AT OLYMPICS XAVION Moss is hoping that one day he will get a chance to represent the Bahamas in the sport of judo at the Olympic Games. The Nassauvian recently travelled to Atlanta, Georgia, where he was met by coach Joshua “Black Ice” White. White, a multi-time junior and senior national champion, was joined by Leo White, two-time Olympian and 17-time national champion, as they combined to prepare Moss in a week-long training camp. After the training, they went north to the University of Tennessee where Moss was able to test his new skills at the annual UT Championships. The tournament hosted about
159 competitors and Moss shined bright by winning his division in style, finishing all of the opponents in his age and weight by ippon (which is equal to a knockout in boxing). He also competed in the next age group up and finished third with a win-loss record of 6-1. “To see a young man travel hundreds of miles from home and take full advantage of every workout and every opportunity is amazing. When asked what makes him fight so hard, he responded, ‘I want to make my mom, Ordain Moss, my sensei, my dojo and my country proud,” said a press release. Moss is definitely on the right path to accomplishing those goals.

FORMAT OF PROPOSED BAHAMAS INTERSCHOOL EQUESTRIAN LEAGUE IS CHANGED
EQUESTRIAN Bahamas announced today that the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew has prompted a change in the initial format of the proposed Bahamas Interschool Equestrian League, or BIEL. Originally encompassing a series of interschool competitions beginning in December, and culminating in a National Championship event in April 2017, the competition format has now been changed for this school year to a single interschool championship event. “The change in format is merely a temporary setback,” said Cathy Ramsingh-Pierre, president of Equestrian Bahamas. “Devastation from Hurricane Matthew has forced the government to re-evaluate its priorities with regard to funding developing school sport activities. “As concerned Bahamians we are very sensitive to the need of our fellow citizens, and to the reality that scarce resources must be allocated appropriately. For this same reason, as a federation we made the decision not to reach out to the private sector for assistance. Ramsingh-Pierre said the goals of BIEL have not changed. “First and foremost, the development of interschool equestrian competition is intended to diversify the athletic opportunities available in Bahamian schools; to act as a springboard to increase national interest in the sport; and to encourage inclusive participation from young athletes in all schools (public and private),” she said. “Secondly, it is intended to introduce our riders to a college competition format, and expose them to opportunities for college scholar-

KPMG Football Fest was a blast MORE than 150 footballers, boys and girls aged 13 and under, played 40 matches of competitive football at Lyford Cay International School’s (LCIS) fifth annual KPMG Football Fest last weekend. Teams from all over the Caribbean took part: Cedar International School (British Virgin Islands), American International School of Kingston (Jamaica), Cayman Prep and High School (Cayman Islands), Cayman International School (Cayman Islands), Lucaya International School (Freeport), the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association and LCIS. Most participating teams are members of the Caribbean International Schools Association (CISA), an organisation designed to enhance sporting competition between international schools in the region. Director of Athletics at LCIS, Craig Massey, said this was the largest number of players yet, signifying the success and growth of the tournament year after year. “We have players and teams who return every year because of the high level of competition, as well as the enjoying the hospitality of our community. All visiting
students and coaches were hosted by LCIS families, highlighting the deep community involvement that goes into making this event a success,” he said.
STRIKERS TRACK CLUB DONATES TO PROJECT QUICK RELIEF THE Strikers Track Club responded to the appeal by the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations by making a contribution to the Project Quick Relief. The club, headed by coach Stephen Murray, presented a box of goods and a cheque to the BAAA to assist in the hurricane relief effort for their affiliated island associations from Grand Bahama and Andros.
The competition culminated on Saturday afternoon with four sets of finals - Bowl, Shield, Plate and Championship. The Championship final for the
girls featured Cayman Prep and Cayman International School, with Cayman Prep winning 2-0. The boys’ Championship final was won by Cedar International
School against Turks and Caicos on a penalty shootout after the teams were level at 1-1 at full time. LCIS Principal Dr Stacey Bobo believes the tournament’s greatest significance lies in the international exposure it provides for LCIS students. “Events such as our annual KPMG Football Fest exemplify the truly transformative experiences we provide at LCIS,” she aid. “As we move forward with plans to build a new, state-of-theart Upper School campus, we will continue to develop opportunities for our students to become not only better skilled athletes but internationally minded, global citizens as well.” KPMG Bahamas has served as the event’s main sponsor from its inception while Subway Bahamas, Abaco Markets Ltd and Thompson Trading also contributed to the event, providing food and snacks throughout. Doctors Hospital provided an EMT team who worked alongside the LCIS school nurse to ensure that all players and spectators were well looked after.

ships.” Evon Wisdom, director of the Sports Unit in the Ministry of Education, confirmed that the Ministry of Education is firmly committed to these goals of diversification and increased opportunity for athletes in Bahamian schools. “The National Sports Secretariat, which is jointly headed by the Ministers of Education, Science and Technology and Youth, Sports and Culture, made a commitment to broaden our base and include more national sports championships this year for high school sports,” Wisdom said. “We stand by this commitment 100 per cent. And thus, despite the funding challenges presented by the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, we will be fund-
ing a National Equestrian Interschool Championship at the end of the school year.” Ramsingh-Pierre said they are looking at this as an opportunity to give more time to plan the format of the April competition to maximise inclusion of the athletes, and to encourage teams to be as large as possible. “Obviously, the children involved will have more competitive experience under their belts by April,” she said. “In the end, hopefully such an event will not only continue to generate interest in the sport, but also assist us in launching the second phase of the programme, which is generating the support of private donors to launch pilot programmes for equestrian instruction in the public schools.”

Junior golfers emerge victorious at Fourteen Clubs skills contest By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net GEORGETTE Rolle’s Fourteen Clubs Golf Academy, which is making a tremendous impact on the Junior Golf Programme in the Bahamas, hosted its Skills Competition in the Bahamas Golf Federation’s Driving Range at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday. The event was designed to give the golfers an opportunity to work on their short game scoring. At the same time, they competed for a number of prizes that were up for grabs. At the end of the competition, the top two finishers in each age group were as follows: Age 8 and Under 1st - Elyse Hanna 2nd - Ben Alliker Age 10 and Under 1st - Rhan Miller 2nd - Aiden Johnson Age 13 and Under 1st - Nyah Singh 2nd - Tia Singh Age 17 and Under 1st - G’Angelo Edgecombe 2nd - Lorenz Shearer The golfers said they all enjoyed participating in the tournament and they had a lot of fun in doing so. “I feel happy. I feel I could accomplish a lot of stuff like soccer and football. I’m a fan of football, but I never had the guts to do it. “But winning this has made me feel as if I can do it,” said Miller, who has been involved in the golf programme for two years. This was Miller’s first time winning a divisional title and the nine-year-old fifth grader at Queen’s College said this is just the beginning of great things to come. Hanna, who has also been in the programme for “two whole years,” said she loves it because she has been able to develop a lot of confidence in herself. “We did the chipping green and all I had to do was try my best and I won,” said the eight-year-old third grader at Xavier’s Lower School. “I was very pleased in what I did.” Identical twin sisters Nyah and Tia Singh have been having a battle against each other every time they compete and Saturday was no exception. “I felt like I did very well today,” said Nyah, who decided to enter golf because she wanted a sport to compete in. “We have a rivalry, but I always beat her.” Tia Singh, however, pointed out that it’s only “by a few points.”

But Tia admitted that at the end of the day, she’s always hoping that she can turn the tables on Nyah. For Edgecombe, he’s not challenged as the siblings, but after being a part of the programme for just three months, he admitted that he has caught on quite well. “It’s a fun sport. At the halfway point, Brady is back and better than ever By ARNIE STAPLETON AP Pro Football Writer THE New England Patriots barely missed a beat when Tom Brady served his monthlong “Deflategate” suspension, going 3-1 and keeping up with the undefeated Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. Trevor Siemian, the 250th overall draft pick in 2015, outdueled a trio of top overall selections in Cam Newton, Andrew Luck and Jameis Winston during a magnificent first month as Peyton Manning’s surprise successor. Then, reality hit — along with Buccaneers defensive tackle Clinton McDonald . He flung Siemian to the turf, bruising his left shoulder, the first in a string of injuries that have sidelined the likes of DeMarcus Ware, C.J. Anderson, Aqib Talib and Derek Wolfe while helping to break the Broncos’ stranglehold on the AFC West. With an anaemic offence
and a depleted defence, the Broncos (6-3) are looking up at not only the Patriots (7-1) in the AFC but two teams in their own division. The resurgent Raiders (7-2) and the Chiefs (6-2) are ahead of them in the AFC West, which the Broncos have owned since Tim Tebow was running the read-option and not the bases. “We’ve just got to find a way to stay on the damn field,” said coach Gary Kubiak, whose team leads the league in three-andouts, putting a back-breaking strain on its dazzling defence. Behind Derek Carr and Khalil Mack, the Raiders are seeking their first playoff berth since 2002, and their 30-20 drubbing of Denver on Sunday was their biggest win in more than a decade. “We know we can’t look at this game as something that’s going to define us or define the season,” running back Latavius Mur-
THE STANDINGS
PATRIOTS QB Tom Brady (left) arrives at Federal court in New York on August 31, 2015. At right, in an October 9 photo, he celebrates a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns. (AP) ray said after running for three touchdowns and half of Oakland’s 218 rushing yards. By dominating the trenches and controlling the clock for 41:28, the Raiders were able to expose a weakness in Denver’s otherwise stellar defence. “That’s something that we have to fix,” cornerback Chris Harris Jr said. “It’s been leaky pretty much all season. So we have to figure that out and really put an emphasis on that, and get back to doing what we do.” The Raiders won’t get caught up in their first-half success because they know holding off the Chiefs, who have won 10 consecutive home games , and Broncos, who have won five division-
al titles in a row , won’t be easy. Plus, New England is clearly the class of the conference now that Manning is pitching products instead of pigskins. Brady is back and better than ever. The Patriots, who visit Denver on December 18, are 4-0 with him back under centre. At age 39, that speed bump year when most elite QBs have either traded in two-minute drills for 30-second spots or are just trying not to tarnish their legacy, Brady has thrown for a dozen TDs and not a single interception in four games. His completion rate of 73.1 per cent is nearly 10 points above his career av-
erage, and his passer rating of 133.9 would be a career high if he can maintain this pace over the second half. Brady is two wins shy of Brett Favre’s 199 career victories and three wins shy of Manning’s record 200 wins, a mark the five-time MVP set when the Broncos won Super Bowl 50. “It’s pretty early, so, there’s a long way to go,” Brady said. “Seven wins, it’s a good place, I think decent position. But coach always says ‘Seven wins won’t get you anything in this league.’ He’s right. We’ve got a lot of football ahead.” As well as things have gone for the Patriots, the trade of defence stalwart Jamie Collins was a reminder to everyone — Brady included — that no one has infinite time in the Patriots’ locker room. “You can’t be around this long and not realise that the world will keep spinning and the sun will come up tomorrow without you,” Brady said. The next two months will show whether Bill Belichick’s trade of Collins was a huge mistake or a heeded message. New England is well on its way to an eighth consecutive AFC East title, holding a three-game lead over second-place Miami (4-4). The Houston Texans (53) are the only .500-or-bet-
ter team in the AFC South, but they were throttled 27-9 in Brock Osweiler’s return to Denver. At least the South has a winning team. The Ravens and Steelers are tied atop the North at 4-4. Nothing epitomises Pittsburgh’s paradoxical season as well as kicker Chris Boswell’s flubbed onside kick Sunday in the final minute of the Steelers’ 21-14 loss to Baltimore. Boswell attempted what in soccer is known as a “rabona” — where the kicking leg is wrapped around the other leg before striking the ball. But Boswell kicked the ball right into his other foot. A lot of teams seem to be tripping over themselves in an attempt to keep up with Brady and the Patriots this season. Indeed, the only conference teams with winning records halfway through the schedule are the Patriots, Texans and the trio from the AFC West. And all the way at the bottom, 0-9 with few prospects for getting a victory, are the Cleveland Browns. “I’ve never been 0-and-9 before, so you better believe it’s the toughest challenge I’ve ever had,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said. “But I am excited about the challenge and I truly believe that we’ve got a tough road ahead of us, but we’re looking forward to it.”
GRAHAM CATCHES 2 TDS, SEAHAWKS HOLD OFF BILLS 31-25 By TIM BOOTH AP Sports Writer SEATTLE (AP) — Jimmy Graham’s first onehanded catch was special. His second was even better. And that doesn’t even mention his open-field hurdle of a defensive back. Graham needed just one hand to catch two first-half touchdown passes from Russell Wilson, and the Seattle Seahawks held off a late rally for a 31-25 win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. “We talked this week if we get a favourable matchup, throw it,” Graham said. “It’s one of those things in the National Football League these windows are so small that sometimes when a guy is on you, you just have to throw it up.” Seattle won its 11th straight Monday night game behind a huge game from its tight end. Still less than a year removed from a major knee injury, Graham used his right arm to catch a 17-yard touchdown from Wilson on the first play of the second quarter and later used the same arm to cradle an 18-yard TD pass in the final moments of the first half. But the Seahawks had to hold on in the final seconds as Buffalo quarterback Tyrod Taylor led the Bills inside the Seattle 10 in the final seconds. Taylor was sacked by Cliff Avril on third-and-goal from the 8 and on fourth-and-goal Taylor’s pass into the end zone fell incomplete. Buffalo would not have needed a touchdown if not for mistakes by the officiating crew at the end of the first half that cost the Bills a chance at a shorter field goal. Dan Carpenter eventually missed a 54-yard attempt on the final play of the half, only after Seattle’s Richard Sherman got away with an unnecessary roughness penalty that wasn’t called and a delay of game caused in part by the officiating crew standing over the ball. NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino tweeted during the game that Walt Anderson’s crew did not make the correct call. “Ridiculous. ... From an officiating stand point, I think they can do better than that,” Bills coach Rex Ryan said. Anderson said the play was being “shut down” because Sherman was unabated to the kicker. “I just didn’t feel like the actions and the contact, because we were shutting the play
SEAHAWKS cornerback Richard Sherman (25) celebrates with wide receiver Doug Baldwin (89) after Sherman intercepted a pass against the Buffalo Bills in the second half of Monday night’s game in Seattle. (AP) down, warranted a foul (for roughing),” Anderson said. Graham caught all eight of his targets for 103 yards. It was his third 100-yard receiving game of the season. Wilson was 20 of 26 passing for 282 yards. Wilson and Christine Michael both added 3-yard touchdowns runs, but Seattle’s run game was again absent. The Seahawks attempted just 12 running plays and wide receiver Tyler Lockett was Seattle’s leading rusher taking a fly sweep 13 yards. Buffalo lost its third straight to drop below .500, but it wasn’t due to its quarterback. Taylor was outstanding, nearly matching Wilson’s performance, except for one miscommunication with a wide receiver that led to Sherman’s end zone interception in the third quarter. Taylor threw for 289 yards. He kept plays alive with his legs and made smart reads and smart throws. Robert Woods was his favourite target with 10 catches for a career-high
162 yards. “He played lights out,” Bills running back LeSean McCoy said of Taylor. “Just everything, the small things, play actions, getting the ball out of his hand, extending plays. He was lights out.” KICKING THE CALL The final seconds of the first half were a mess. Carpenter lined up for a 53-yard field goal with 3 seconds left. Sherman jumped offside and crashed hard into Carpenter, blocking the kick. Sherman was flagged for offside and Carpenter appeared to be hurt bringing trainers on the field. Because the trainers took the field, Carpenter had to leave for one play. Buffalo spiked the ball with 1 second left to set up a 48-yard attempt, but the Bills were penalised for delay of game even with the umpire standing over the ball. Carpenter’s 54-yard attempt on the final play was wide right. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he talked with Blandino immediately after
the game to get an explanation. PERFECT START Buffalo got a dream start, with Jerry Hughes blocking a punt after Seattle went three-and-out to open the game and Taylor running untouched for a 3-yard TD on the next play for a quick 7-0 lead. It was Buffalo’s first blocked punt since 2014. TOP DEFENCE? Buffalo scored on its first three possessions before Seattle finally forced a punt midway through the second quarter. That snapped a string of nine straight possessions with opponents scoring on Seattle’s defence. INJURIES Buffalo centre Eric Wood was carted off the field after Gillislee’s TD run with a right ankle injury. Wood was rolled up blocking on the play. Ryan announced after the game it was a broken leg. Ryan Groy took over at center.

Ronaldo caps ‘dream year’ after Madrid contract extension By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer MADRID (AP) — Life in Madrid certainly seems to agree with Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal forward signed a five-year contract extension with Real Madrid on Monday, capping an exceptional year after triumphs with his club in the Champions League and with his national team in the European Championship. “This is the best moment in my life,” Ronaldo said. “After winning the Champions with Madrid, the Euro with Portugal and now having my contract extended, it’s a dream year. This is too special. Life is good, I’m telling you.” Wearing jeans, a black jacket and glasses, Ronaldo signed the new fiveyear contract alongside club president Florentino Perez, then was given a Madrid jersey with the number 2021 on the back. The deal keeps Ronaldo tied to Madrid until June
2021, when he will be 36 years old. His previous contract would have ended in 2018. “It’s not my last contract, let’s make it clear,” he said with a smile. The three-time world player of the year is Madrid’s all-time leading scorer with 372 goals in 360 matches. He has scored more than 50 goals in the last six seasons and is two short of becoming the first player to score 100 goals in European competitions. Ronaldo led Madrid to two Champions League titles and to a Spanish league title, among other trophies. “I’m not going to lie, I didn’t expect to have these great numbers by now,” Ronaldo said. “I want to keep making history and giving my best with this jersey. I want to keep doing what I have been doing, scoring goals and helping this club win trophies.” He feels the numbers should be enough to give him a fourth player of the year award, but said “it’s

Ronaldo’ and an ‘after Ronaldo’ for Real Madrid.” The 31-year-old forward signed the new contract a day after Madrid defeated Leganes 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to retain the Spanish league lead. Ronaldo didn’t find the net, extending his scoreless streak at the Bernabeu to five matches, his worst scoring slump at home. It was another lacklustre performance for Ronaldo, who has been facing criticism for an up-and-down start to a season in which he has played below expectations with seven goals in 12 matches. He was jeered at the Bernabeu after a recent disappointing performance in the Spanish league. “This day is too special to talk about scoring or not scoring,” Ronaldo said. Ronaldo is just the latest Madrid player to have his contract extended past 2020. The club recently reached new deals with Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez.

THE TRIBUNE

Sweet shot: Stephen Curry hits NBA-record 13 three-pointers By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Stephen Curry let it fly from the top of the arc, backpedalled as his record-breaking 3-ball dropped and then wildly began bobbing his head and shuffling his feet with the swagger of a two-time reigning MVP. Add another remarkable
achievement to a long list of them for Curry: most 3-pointers in one game. The star guard sank 13 to set an NBA mark — one game after missing all his 3-point tries for the first time in two years — and the Golden State Warriors beat the winless New Orleans Pelicans 116-106 on Monday. “This was a special night,” Curry said.
He finished with 46 points, three days after his league-record streak of 157 games with at least one 3 was snapped when he went 0 for 10 on 3-point tries in a 117-97 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. “I was hard on myself in practice the last two days. I had pretty good shooting sessions,” he said. “I don’t overreact to games like that whether I go 0 for 10
or 2 for 12 or whatever it is. My process is the same, but I had another level of focus the last two days trying to get my rhythm back and see the ball go in.” Curry shot 13 of 17 from beyond the arc in his seventh career game with double-digit 3s. He broke the mark with 2:23 to go and bobbed his head in delight as the crowd roared. Curry shared the previous 3-point record of 12 with Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall. “Nothing you can do about it. He was being Steph,” Pelicans star Anthony Davis said. Grabbing back the spotlight from new Golden State star Kevin Durant, Curry raised his right arm and pumped his chest all night, howling and pointing as one shot fell after another. He went 16 for 26 overall in his first 40-point performance after leading the NBA with 13 last season. Warriors fans enjoyed every minute of it, chanting “M-V-P! M-V-P!” “That was quite a show. Not at all surprising the way Steph bounces back from bad nights,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said. Klay Thompson had 24 points with two 3s as the Splash Brothers looked far more in sync from long range at last. Durant added 22 for the Warriors. Davis had 33 points and 13 rebounds for New Orleans (0-7), which along with the 76ers (0-6) are the NBA’s lone teams still without a victory. Davis gave the Pelicans a 73-72 lead on a turnaround hook shot with 4:14 left in the third quarter. Davis had 45 points, 17 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the teams’ initial matchup on Oct. 28. Draymond Green had his second double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 assists for the Warriors, who were back at Oracle Arena after they embarrassed the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-96 there in Durant’s first game against his former team last Thursday. Thompson — 2 for 10 against the Lakers from 3-point range, a combined 0 of 13 vs. Phoenix and Portland and 9 of 46 overall (19.6 per cent) this season coming in — missed his first three attempts before hitting from the baseline late in the second quarter as the sellout crowd went crazy. 7:29 mark of the first quarter. He received a technical with 1:45 left in the third for arguing he was fouled by Davis on a 3-point attempt. TIP-INS Pelicans: E’Twaun Moore added 15 points. ... The Pelicans signed veteran G Archie Goodwin and waived injured G Lance Stephenson, scheduled to have surgery to repair his torn groin in Philadelphia yesterday. New Orleans lost for the 15th time in the past 16 games against Golden State. Warriors: David West appeared in his 900th regular-season game, one of 22 active players to reach the number. ... Curry has made a 3 in 81 straight home games. When he came up empty Friday night in Los Angeles, it was the first time Curry did not hit a 3 since Nov. 11, 2014. Rookie Patrick McCaw returned from missing four straight games with a sprained left ankle sustained late in the first meeting vs. New Orleans. C Anderson Varejao was inactive. ... Former War-
riors player and coach Al Attles celebrated his 80th birthday, receiving a video tribute and the birthday song with cupcakes after the first quarter. DURANT’S MARK Durant has scored 20 or more points in 71 straight regular-season games, matching Kareem AbdulJabbar for the fifth-longest streak in NBA history. The Philadelphia Warriors beat the Pittsburgh Ironmen 81-75, watched by a crowd of 4,185. UP NEXT Pelicans: At Sacramento last night in their first visit to the Kings’ new Golden 1 Center. It’s the middle game of a three-game road trip. New Orleans has won six straight in the series and four in a row on the road.
